KAIT DUNTON is an LA-based keyboardist & composer. Her emotive musical expression and joyful energy have garnered her hundreds of thousands of followers on social media and over 40,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Starting with her first album, Real & Imagined - now a fan favorite with over three million streams - Kait has continued to cultivate her signature sound over many subsequent albums and releases, including her latest single featuring her evocative improvisational style - and nearly 3M views on Instagram: “this one's for you”. Kait's new album, Keyboards, is a love letter to the sounds and instruments of '70s jazz-funk. A celebration of vintage grooves and classic keyboards: the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond organ, Clavinet and - always - the acoustic piano. Keyboards documents the music Kait was writing and recording last year when her following on Instagram really exploded - now with close to 140,000 followers - and takes inspiration from the music of Stuff (Richard Tee), Herbie Hancock, the Brecker Brothers, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal, to name a few. Together with Andrew Synowiec on guitar, Sean Hurley on bass and Jake Reed on drums, Kait and band radiate joyful sonic energy and groove. In addition to composition and performance, Kait is also an active recording artist and educator. Her playing appears extensively on the Mister Rogers movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, as well as in The Lego Movie 2, Downsizing, Empire, and ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! Kait was an early member of Snarky Puppy during their formative years in Texas, appearing on their sophomore record, The World is Getting Smaller. She records often for film, television and other artists, and has taught at the University of North Texas, USC's Thornton School of Music, Musician's Institute, Chaffey College, and most recently at Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) in Pasadena, where she developed their new Piano Performance program and served as the inaugural chair.

Andrew's latest album entitled FUN, is now available, and he'll being touring the West Coast soon as well. During the interview we spoke about changing gear to get into session work, the trials of building his home studio, doing online sessions where the client doesn't attend, how he built his career, and much more. I spoke with Andrew via Zoom from his studio in Hollywood. On the intro I'll take a look at how the Grammy's won't include a popular Ai song, and I'll answer some common audio questions.
Andrew Synowiec Invites all to have some "FUN" we discuss his latest solo disc.
Grammy-winning solo artist and first-call session ace ANDREW SYNOWIEC plugs in several guitars, jams with us, previews his new album, FUN, more than a week before its release (it comes out September 8), and takes us on a sonic tour of his amazing Los Angeles studio. Having recorded and/or performed with everyone from the Who, Bette Midler, and Elton John to Ariana Grande, Michael Bublé, and Nick Jonas — and having done film music sessions for blockbuster franchises such as Frozen, Batman, Mission Impossible, and Spider Man — Andrew has gained mountains of professional guitar experience in his 20 years in Los Angeles ... and he shares a bunch of that experience right here on this episode. Today I'm having a GAS with John Paterno, a Grammy-winning music producer, mixer, composer, engineer, mastering engineer, and musician. Dubbed ‘Mr Meticulous' by industry writer Mr. Bonzai, Paterno is known for his attention to detail while at the same time allowing artists to feel uninhibited in their creativity. John moved to Los Angeles two weeks after graduation from the University of Miami MUE [Music Engineering] program. A short period of freelance assisting concluded with a staff position at Sunset Sound/Sound Factory in Hollywood, where for five years he was exposed to many great engineers, producers, and artists. After breaking out of assisting, John worked with a wide range of producers including Mitchell Froom, Joe Chiccarelli, Byron Gallimore, Celso Valli, and Stephen Duffy. He won a Latin Grammy for his work with artist/producer Soraya. John has produced or co-produced projects for Gov't Mule, Michael Landau, Caleb Henry, Andrew Synowiec, The Black Mollys, Mitchell Froom, Lustra, Robbie Williams, The Lilac Time, and many other artists. He has also co-written songs with artists and has written pieces for TV and film. A recent addition to Paterno's offerings is Mix-Therapy — live, one-on-one-over-the-internet mixing instruction. You might not know Andrew Synowiec's name, but chances are you've heard his guitar playing. Heck, chances are you heard his guitar playing this week.Synowiec makes his living as an LA session guitarist, with a list of credits as long as the California coastline. Among those credits: you can hear him on the score for pretty much every recent Disney film (Frozen, CoCo, Zootopia), as well superhero flicks like Logan and Spider-Man: Far From Home, TV shows like The Simpsons and The Good Place, as well as on records with recording artists like The Who, HAIM, P!nk, Nick Jonas, Donna Summer, and so many more. A couple weeks back, Kirk sat down with Andrew to talk about his career as a session player, how he finds a good balance when doing creative work for hire, his approach to practicing and guitar tone, how he designed and built his home studio, and why he continues to make the time for his own personal music projects.FEATURED/DISCUSSED ON THIS EPISODE:Guy Lacour etude No. 4 as performed by David Hernando Vitores: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyGo9NmZUNwWes Montgomery on “No Blues” from Smokin' at the Half Note w/ the Wynton Kelly Trio, 1965“Where The Streets Have No Name” by U2 from The Joshua Tree, 1987“Sad But True” by Metallica from Metallica, 1991“Blood and Thunder” by Mastodon from Leviathan, 2004“Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley from Grace, 1994“Already Taken,” “Second Story,” and “Humor Me” by Andrew Synowiec from Second Story, 2019“Jonkoloni” by Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba from Segu Blue, 2006, feat. the Ngoni“Salsa Caliente (Versión Aumentada)” by Meridian Brothers from Desperanza, 2012“You Are Young” by Keane from Strangeland, 2012A video with Andrew about his work and his home studioA Spotify playlist Andrew maintains featuring things he's played onAndrew's website, with lots more credits and other infoSTRONG MERCHCheck out the Strong Songs merch store for some cool t-shirts, mugs, totes, and more: store.strongsongspodcast.comJOIN THE STRONG SONGS DISCORDThe Strong Songs Discord server is now open to everyone! Today's guest is Jake Reed. Jake is a Los Angeles-based session player / educator and the host of an incredible YouTube Channel breaking down recording techniques….(also, I must give a big shoutout to Blair Sinta for inspiring me to reach out to Jake after hearing him as a guest on the “Recording Drums with Blair Sinta” podcast). On top of knowing how to explain things in an extremely approachable way, Jake is simply an amazing drummer. He's performed / recorded with trioKAIT, Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Bill Cunliffe, Bruce Forman, Cow Bop, Seth MacFarlane, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Matt Forbes, Larry Goldings, Anthony Wilson, Adam Levy, Bob Mintzer, Les McCann, Freda Payne, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Synowiec, Mako, Ellis Hall, Tommy Torres, and Frenship. He's even been asked to sub for Peter Erskine soooooo there's that. I love his overall energy and perspective on this often-too-serious world of drumming and I knew his choices would expand my own palate and (since I'm recording this after our conversion) I can confidently say I was rightt…just like always! Anyways….I have a feeling Jake will be a recurring guest on this podcast in many facets…so I hope you like this one. If you don't.
