Editor, Myron Kerstein ACE WICKED: PART ONE editor, Myron Kerstein ACE finds himself in the familiar positions of both cutting a musical and also collaborating with director Jon M. Chu.  This is Myron's third musical in a row, following Lin-Manuel Miranda's tick, tick Boom! (2021) and Chu's IN THE HEIGHTS (2021).  Prior to IN THE HEIGHTS, Myron first cut for Chu on his film, CRAZY RICH ASIANS (2018). Adapted from the venerable Broadway smash, WICKED: PART ONE follows the journey of a young woman named Elphaba. Misunderstood and often outcast because of her green skin, Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a fellow student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths. MYRON KERSTEIN, ACE In addition to his musical experience with Jon M. Chu and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Myron also had a diverse pool of film and tv projects, including GARDEN STATE (2004), NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST (2008), LITTLE FOCKERS (2010), THE DUKES OF HAZARD (2005), FAME (2009), GIRLS (2015-17) and HOME BEFORE DARK (2020). MEET THE PARENTS (2000) is a high water mark in cringe comedy and sees Ben Stiller's Greg Focker ready to marry girlfriend Pam but before he can pop the question, he must win over her formidable father, humourless former CIA agent Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), at the wedding of Pam's sister.Peter isn't a fan but the rest of us enjoyed the agonisingly awkward humour and some of us even thought there were quite interesting social and ethnic observations going on since the embarrassingly named hero also happens to be a male nurse and Jewish. A strong recommend simply for the line “you tried to milk him didn't you, you sick son of a bitch”. Based on an independent film from 1992 that Steven Spielberg bought the remake rights to, the movie's strong Box Office performance of course meant that we were blessed with several sequels including MEET THE FOCKERS, LITTLE FOCKERS and MOTHER FOCKER.We love to hear from our listeners! Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss American Pie, the first film in the American Pie series. American Pie is responsible for kicking off a new R-rated sex comedy craze not seen since Revenge of the Nerds over a decade prior. Paul Weitz's (About a Boy, Little Fockers) directorial debut stars a mixture of fresh-faced actors (Jason Biggs, Shannon Elizabeth, Sean William Scott) and seasoned former child actors (Alyson Hannigan, Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Ian Nicholas) in a somewhat raunchy tale of high school romance. At times annoying, cheesy, and funny, American Pie takes viewers back to when the Internet was a novelty and sex crimes were punchlines. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but anchoring it all is an uncool yet heartfelt performance from SCTV alum Eugene Levy as Jim's Dad. American Pie has enough good spots where it's worth hunting down. Pervasive milquetoast needledrops abound. Sequelcast 2 and Friends is part of the Tokyo Beat Podcast Network. KEVIN HART After an electrifying performance at amateur night in a Philadelphia comedy club, Kevin quit his shoe salesman job and began performing full time. However, it was his first appearance at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival that led Hart into roles in feature films. In 2009, Hart’s one-hour Comedy Central special, “I’m A Grown Little Man,” became one of the highest rated specials for the network and in 2010, Hart’s DVD “Seriously...Funny” was one of the fastest selling DVDs, going triple Platinum, aided by the Comedy Central special of the same name, which was the highest rated comedy special of 2010. In 2011 Hart released “Laugh At My Pain” the feature film version of his comedy tour, which grossed over $7 million and was 2011’s most successful film of those released in less than 300 theaters, catapulted Hart’s to the number one comedian on Ticketmaster, and helping him to sell out the Nokia Theater for two nights in a row, breaking the record previously set by Eddie Murphy. This lead to the LAMP DVD hitting double platinum in February 2012, after being on sale for only a month. His next comedy tour, “Let Me Explain” took him to 90 American cities along with Europe and Africa - resulting in him becoming the second American in history to sell out London’s O2 Arena. Hart spent most of the rest of the year filming two movies back to back (“About Last Night” and “Ride Along”). Additionally, Kevin starred in huge blockbusters like “Barbershop,” “Undeclared,” “Little Fockers,” "Death at a Funeral," "Fool’s Gold," Steve Harvey’s “Think Like A Man,” and “Judd Apatow’s “Five Year Engagement” and "The 40 Year-Old Virgin." Hart then embarked on the multi-city domestic and international “What Now?” comedy tour. Domestically, he sold out 8 tri-state area arenas, including Madison Square Garden, Barclays, Prudential Center and Jones Beach, selling over 100,000 tickets in the NY market. Internationally, he sold out over a dozen arenas in the European market, selling over 150,000 tickets, and sold out arenas across Australia, selling 100,000 tickets. All in all, Hart’s hit comedy tour grossed over $ 100 million worldwide. Hart’s recent movie projects include the biggest grossing live action comedy “Central Intelligence,” “Ride Along 2,” “The Wedding Ringer,” and “Get Hard.” The consummate worker, Hart is also a force in television, executive producing the show, Real Husbands of Hollywood which just wrapped production on Season 5. Hart’s recent movie projects include the biggest grossing live action comedy “Central Intelligence,” “Ride Along 2,” “The Wedding Ringer,” “Get Hard,” the animated film "The Secret Life of Pets," Universal Pictures will release the feature version of his comedy tour “What Now” (coming out in this month—October 14th, 2016), documenting how he was the first comedian to sell out an NFL stadium, selling over 50,000 tickets in one show.

Nothing unusual about decades-long film franchises and their characters - from SHERLOCK HOLMES and ZORRO, to SUPERMAN, JAMES BOND and more. What is rare however is to have one actor portray a single character over those decades. And as both performer and character matures and changes physically, emotionally and otherwise, we as the audience also mature and change with them. To be introduced as a child to a Han Solo, Rocky Balboa or Mr. Spock by one's parent, then as a parent to take your children to a new film featuring that performer and character - often on screen with their children!, is an emotionally unique cinematic experience - the kind of which, hey, admit it, in recent films such as THE FORCE AWAKENS and CREED has been responsible for more than a few eye-watering responses. Craig and Jim get personal in this one, diving into and dissecting five beloved cinematic icons (well, four individuals and one couple) - each portrayed by the same actor or actress over 25 - 50 years, relating their initial reactions as children through to their (at times surprising) interpretation / opinions of them today. Based on a True Story

Tom McCarthy started his acting career with a short movie in 1989 called Roast Suckling. Although that's probably not something most have seen, he's one of those actors that you'd recognize when you see him. Probably because he's been in a lot of movies and TV shows you've seen. He played a background character in Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts' 1997 thriller Conspiracy Theory. In 2000, Tom has a recurring role on Boston Public as the character Kevin Riley. After more background character roles in movies such as Syriana and the Oscar nominated Flags of Our Fathers, Tom again had a recurring role on a TV show in 2008, this time for The Wire. Some of Tom's more recent characters were Gordon, the loveable doctor who plays the new husband of John Cusack's ex-wife in the disaster movie 2012. Or as Dr. Bob in the comedy Little Fockers. But Tom's career extends way beyond acting. In 2009, Tom worked with Pete Docter and Bob Peterson to write the Pixar movie Up. In 2011, he directed the pilot episode for a little show on HBO called Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, HBO didn't like how it turned out, so they had to reshoot it. Tom's career hit new heights when he wrote and directed the film that won the Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Eight movies were nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture in 2016. While the writers for films like Room and Brooklyn were inspired by things that happened in history, their stories aren't based on those events. Still, that leaves four movies that were based on a true story. They are The Revenant, which was a movie we already learned about in the first episode, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, and last but not least, the movie that is the topic of our story today. Spotlight ended up beating out the other seven nominees as it won two of the seven Oscars it was nominated for, including the coveted Best Picture and Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Tom McCarthy and his writing partner, Josh Singer. Although Spotlight tells the story of corruption and cover-ups in the Catholic Church, Josh Singer explained in an interview with Creative Screenwriting that was secondary to the movie's plot. Josh said, "This story isn’t about exposing the Catholic Church. We were not on some mission to rattle people’s faith. In fact, Tom came from a Catholic family. The motive was to tell the story accurately while showing the power of the newsroom—something that’s largely disappeared today. This story is important. Journalism is important, and there is a deeper message in the story." So if the cover-up was secondary to the movie's story, how much of the film was true?   Links Part 1 of 2: Church allowed abuse by priest for years Part 2 of 2: Geoghan preferred preying on poorer children Globe reporters tell their ‘Spotlight’ stories Reporting an Explosive Truth: The Boston Globe and Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church Based on a True True Story Data Visualization of Spotlight More episodes on the Based on a True Story website Join the Based on a True Story Facebook page Support the show at Patreon Let me know what you think of the show on Twitter

Lately John and I have been favoring the "live" recording process (we go to a restaurant or coffee shop, find a table, set down the recorder and begin), in part because Skype can be, um ... kinda problematic. And eating and drinking while talking comes easy to us. So for the time being we're sticking with it. Live recording, that is. And eating and drinking, which I'm told is helpful. Again this week we recorded the show at Panera Bread, next to the AMC Fenway 10 theater in Boston. The films discussed are Little Fockers, Gulliver's Travels and the Norweigan flick Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Plus we offer our picks of the week. For me it's Cyrus, I'm Still Here and Troll 2 on Blu-ray. For John it's A&E's Billy the Exterminator: Season One.
