What stroke us most about the vibrant young girl we met is how dedicated and passionate she is. Her last single might be called « Sad chick », but when it comes to talking about her journey and music, she opens up and glows. Celeste is the brain and voice behind Talker and she's been around for a while now. She got her first big break as a touring musician for the electro-pop band Frenship and she gained a lot of experience with them as they were playing legendary stages like Red Rocks, The Bowery Ballroom, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. When she came back from the tour, she felt ready to develop her project and that's when Talker was born. As she navigated her way through the Los Angeles indie scene, she played most of our exciting clubs, among them the Hi-Hat (RIP), the Bootleg Theater (RIP), the Moroccan Lounge, the Roxy, and the Echo, to name a few. Talker is a hard worker, you just have to check the campaign she launched for her last single to realize how much heart and dedication she puts into her music. She released her single along with an illustrated fanzine, a live version, a beautiful music video, and a very creative Halloween campaign showcasing different iconic « Sad chick » looks (check her Insta). She might be the mind behind all of that but she knows how to be surrounded by people of great talent. Talking about talented people, the first time we heard about her was when we interviewed Anthony and Marshall from Teenage Wrist. When we asked them who they liked in the scene they mentioned Celeste. She might not be as Rock as other acts we have covered but there is something raw and definitely authentic about her that we love. Maybe it's the fact she allows herself to expose her vulnerability and uses it to create, plus she does it with humor. « Sad chick » is a good example so naturally we wanted to talk to her about mental health and how she dealt with it during the pandemic. Celeste found relief in her art, she worked with friend and producer Dan Sadin on her next record and together they gave birth to a beautiful pop opus tainted with alternative colors that you'll soon get to hear. Meanwhile, stop by our podcast and discover this smart, fascinating and determined young woman. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/support
We had the pleasure of interviewing FRENSHIP over Zoom video! FRENSHIP (James Sunderland and Brett Hite) make wide-angle pop songs that are realized in the moment, shaped by diverse inspirations: the brash, bold innocence of 80s pop; the experimental streak of 90s hip-hop; and, not to mention, the songwriting chops of stadium-filling superstars. Their songs are painted in bold, bright colors, packed with harmonies and unshakeable hooks that connect with a global audience. FRENSHIP's debut album Vacation, released May 17, 2019, via Counter Records (part of the Ninja Tune family), followed the explosive interest which has greeted the music they have released so far, including the 2016 global hit “Capsize” with Emily Warren.2021 will see FRENSHIP return with a renewed sense of energy and creativity full of the undeniable melodies fans have found to know and love.We want to hear from you! Jake is a Los Angeles-based session player / educator and the host of an incredible YouTube Channel breaking down recording techniques….(also, I must give a big shoutout to Blair Sinta for inspiring me to reach out to Jake after hearing him as a guest on the “Recording Drums with Blair Sinta” podcast). On top of knowing how to explain things in an extremely approachable way, Jake is simply an amazing drummer. The Journey of Pursuit - Stories and Strategies to Empower Creative Millennial Entrepreneurs
Today's guest is someone I have known since I was a sophomore in college. We initially bonded over the fact that we were both transfer students at The University of Miami, taking about 22 credits per semester, I know, I'm not sure how we managed to do that. Not only is she a talented musician and entrepreneur but is also a dear friend of mine. When I moved to LA, she was the first person to lend me a helping hand and I will forever be grateful to her for showing me the ropes around LA. Here's a bit about my dear friend, Talker: Named for the way people have mispronounced her family's name since, well, forever, talker is an outspoken grunge-pop project fronted by Los Angeles songwriter Celeste Tauchar. After years playing with electro-pop band FRENSHIP (Columbia Records) and playing to crowds like Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Lollapalooza, it's time for the young powerhouse to take center stage. talker's latest EP "Wax" is out now, and has garnered attention from NPR Music, The A.V. Club, Buzzbands LA, and more. We talk about all kinds of things in today's episode: how you have to have a sob fest in order to really know you moved to LA, Music PROS, touring with the band, Frenship and singing Capsize with them. Talker talks about life on the road, having to juggle her artist projects and touring with the band. She dives into how her plans have changed due to life and COVID, how she recorded and wrote music during a pandemic, and how she has learned that relinquishing control and saying yes, have helped her become the artist she wants to be. Pop Art Painter Jamie Roxx (www.JamieRoxx.us) welcomes talker (Grunge-Pop) to the Show! smarturl.it/talkerintimidatedInstagram: @talkercelesteFacebook: www.facebook.com/talkerceleste During her ongoing work with Frenship, she has performed on several tours and played to sold-out crowds at Lollapalooza, Life is Beautiful and Bonnaroo. Playing with Frenship had her questioning her own role as a musician, singer, and songwriter, eventually leading to talker’s current project - something she terms “grunge-pop.” A hybrid of her musical influences, “grunge-pop” is heavily influenced by bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden but with a more pop oriented sound. In a business where brand and persona are as important as the music, talker is authentic in a way that is instantly tangible, identifiable, and relatable. There are big ships and small ships, but the best of all is Frenship! This Los Angeles-based electro-pop duo met selling stretchy ladies’ garments at Lululemon and experimented with their sound before honing in on the ’80s-inspired, high-energy dual vocals that now define them. James Sunderland and Brett Hite’s single “Capsize” went viral in June 2016, streaming more than 18 million times on Spotify within a month of its release and earning a nod as a contender for Spotify's Song of the Summer. “Once the song came out and we started playing concerts, we realized how big it had become because the houses were packed and everyone was singing along,” Hite told The Fairfax Times. “We had this big song and we weren’t really prepared for it.” By the time Frenship released its debut EP “Truce" and dropped the video in September, Capsize was (unfortunately) on its way to being named among Billboard’s 20 most underrated pop songs of the year. Going platinum just two weeks back, though, may bring some consolation. Set List: - "1000 Nights" - "Carpet" - "Kids" - "Capsized" For more, visit wcpo.com/loungeacts
Our interview with FRENSHIP, an indie pop duo, consisting of James Sunderland and Brett Hite. They are best known for their 2016 single, Capsize, which has surpassed over 360 million plays on Spotify. We discuss with them the origin of FRENSHIP, meeting at Lululemon, how they deal with criticism and evolve their sound, how they got discovered, their advice to new artists, and their creative process behind producing Capsize with Emily Warren.
