Megan Jasper grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts an industrial town, just an hour outside of Boston. Megan remembers it as a tough place to grow up. As a young girl, her family would travel to Boston and she and her sister would hit Newbury Comics when there was only one store. As a teen, she traveled to Boston for punk rock shows. Attending UMass, she was friends with J Mascis, a fellow student. When Dinosaur Jr toured Massachusetts in the early days Megan served as a roadie for the band. During a 1989 tour, they stopped in Seattle and that's when she decided she wanted to make it her home. After landing in Seattle, she made her way to the Sub Pop offices. Megan started as a receptionist there, when the label was a tiny operation, constantly teetering on the brink of financial disaster. She took a job with Caroline Distribution and called all the Tower Records stores in the Pacific Northwest. When Nirvana led the music explosion of the early 90's, the New York Times came calling to do a feature on the music culture of Seattle. Interviewing Jonathan Poneman, he referred the Times to Megan, now working for Caroline Records. The Times was looking for slang expressions Seattle kids used around the city. Megan made up a series of “grunge terms” she didn't think the Times would believe were real. They did, they didn't fact check and they ran it as a “Lexicon of Grunge”.After a time working for ADA Distribution, Megan went back to Sub Pop in a variety of roles (Marketing & Distribution) and worked her way up to the role of CEO where she resides today. Bright, quick, smart, and funny, you'll enjoy our conversation with Sub Pop's Megan Jasper.

This is pulled from an episode that will never see the light of day. There was an on-air fistfight etc. I won't bore you with the details, but it is a nice story to warm you up for the impending onslaught of anachronistic holiday stimuli.
In this episode, we're taking a walk down one of Boston's most iconic commercial corridors. Courtney Flynn is the second generation running Trident Booksellers & Cafe, which has been located on the "wrong side" of Newbury Street for almost 40 years. We chat about running a small business in a city notorious for red tape, Newbury Comics, and who you'd rather sit next to at a bar: a rabid Philly sports fan or a rabid Boston sports fan.Send us a Text Message.

This week on the podcast we are so incredibly thrilled to welcome Grammy Award-winning musician Aimee Mann! Vanessa recalls the first time that the Bayers worked with Aimee on their old web series and how Jonah got so nervous about a joke they'd written he had to walk out of a taping with her to regain his composure. The three of us also discuss, you guessed, Scholastic Book Clubs and the sheer joy of getting a bundle of books delivered onto your desk by your homeroom teacher as a kid. We also discuss the brilliance of a perfectly crafted young adult novel, Aimee's experience working at the first Newbury Comics and talk about that time she and husband Michael Penn experienced the cultural phenomenon known as Four Loko. Finally, we play a captivating round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we review petitions for bringing back dessert-flavored gums, producing a proper physical release for the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES soundtrack and Snapple's not-so-memorable line of Elements drinks. Was Aimee a vocal advocate for Motorhead back in the day? You'll have to listen to this episode to find out! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ken and Pete get RIGHT into it and discuss The Want Ads, the nature of AV Nerds, wanting to be the go to expert to fight monsters among your peer group, managing bands, wanting to be in the limelight but being shy, playing the bass, being a punk rock kid, how creepy dudes like comedy, Weird Al, letting Ken host his own show, loving activities that give you time away from your family, Townies, Boston trash, Cha Cha, the joke that got Pete on Conan, how pride shifts from your work to your children, the pay bump you get with a Golden Globe, being funny for free, making your talent a career, The Devil, the pain you have to go through to gain skills, how Prince was a nerd, practice, radioactive spiders, obsessiveness, hating Boston, the horror of a Red Sox hat, the Hard F Word, suffering, feeling out of place, The Unseen, needing to cleanse your brain with angry punk rock after seeing your parents, not liking The Showcase Showdown, Doc Hopper, writing letters, energy not derived from cocaine, Rancid at Avalon, remembering Waterdog, fights, being the tall guy, enjoying the scary parts of life, Harvard Square, Green Day Riot, Bad Brains, fights, front men, how jocks ruin everything, white hats, Ken stealing crowd surfers shoes, playing a song you wrote with Tim Armstrong, Pete's band Nude, the way we made friends, self help, knowing you are in control of your life, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Newbury Comics, Tower Records, making game show based prank phone calls, trick questions based on The Wizard of Oz, being ridiculed by hooligans and riff raff at the Burlington movie theater and having your brother betray you. THEN Ken gets Tripp Underwood of The Unseen on the phone to discuss Pete's love of the band, his letter writing, and to make an offer to answer all of Pete's unanswered Unseen questions.
Brian and Joeman are back, this time to discuss what each of them truly believe to be one of the most exciting live albums, right up there with Buck Owens' Carnegie Hall Concert, The Rolling Stones' Get Yr Ya-Ya's Out and KISS Alive! The album in question? The Monkees' Live 1967, released with little fanfare by Rhino in the summer of 1987, and compiled from three concerts in August '67, during a two month summer tour during which they played as a self-contained psychedelic/garage/jangle-pop quartet. Despite both of us purchasing this episode's featured album the same summer at the same place (Newbury Comics in Harvard Square), Joeman (John Hendrickson) and I did not yet know each other in the summer of 1987. But we did both belong to an exclusive demographic: Late 80's adolescent Monkees freaks that were also 1) feverishly absorbing as much rock and roll history as possible (so we knew what was what) and 2) enthusiastically pursuing an instrument (Joeman=guitar; Brian=drums) because each of us had already noticed that life did not appear to get much more fun than being in a good rock band.In the relative dark ages of 1987, it was easy to be surprised by a new release by a beloved artist. Being informed took much more work. And that was cool! The pleasantly unexpected is harder to come by in the 21st century.Neither of us saw Monkees Live 1967 coming and it flipped both of us out irreversibly. It's indeed a perfect presentation.—One's FIRST impression upon seeing the album cover for the first time: These are four guys serious about being in a band. No pearly white smiles, no embarrassing outfits or goofball expressions, just the guys at work. Guitar necks and drumsticks are seen being put to work. All with a subtle psychedelic glow contrasting with the black background. Excellent job by whomever at the Rhino Art Dept was responsible, because…—One's LAST impression, should one listen to the full album, is shock, exhilaration, joy, ready to take on the fucking world!! The promise of the album cover is paid in full, with interest! Why? Because the last song echoing in the listener's ears, a 5 minute “Stepping Stone” with a perfect psychedelic jam and nods to their new buddy Hendrix, is simply, still, one of the few live recordings that kills me EVERY time (The Who's “A Quick One” from the Rock and Roll Circus and the Grateful Dead's “Morning Dew” from Cornell 1977 are the other two that come to mind). Listened to out of context, one might mistake the freakout section for Syd-era Floyd or Cale-era VU—except for the screaming girls in the background. It's so good. For this fleeting moment in Monkees history, they wanted to tour as a real band and play the songs the way THEY wanted to play them. Indeed, The Monkees succeeded in creating a unique sound between the four of them, and it worked. For a certain breed of Monkees fans--the ones who identify more with the music--especially the music they weren't supposed to create--more than the TV series, Live '67 is a personal victory—vindication that they were a very cool REAL band, even if for a very short time. It should've been a victory for the four Monkees at the time, because what we hear is audio proof that in the summer of 1967 they could get as freaky in concert as anyone at Monterey Pop, and rock harder than some of their contemporaries. But nope- the weirder they got, the fewer albums they sold. They'd keep a percentage of mainstream oldies fans that would crop up with each subsequent reunion, but then there are those like Joeman and myself, who represent the formidable, insatiable, nuanced fan. And Live 1967 was most likely the radioactive spider that bit us and others like us back in the summer of ‘87, setting us on this bizarre path. Join us as we start to explore this excellent live album.

This episode Christian sits down with G.D. Praetorius, author of new book “Babysitting a Band on the Rocks”. Now a V.P. for a large bank, but back in the day a handler of rock star egos small and large. Lot's of good tales from someone who lived the outsider life until he went straight. Now he's written the tales down in print!"Babysitting A Band On The Rocks & Other Adventures..." tells the story of a hardcore fan going from the back row of the arena to backstage working with some of the biggest classic rock icons of the 70s and 80s. The title refers to a year spent with a highly dysfunctional Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, while other tales involve close encounters with Van Halen, AC/DC, Jethro Tull, Ritchie Blackmore & Rainbow, Pink Floyd, Yes, Billy Joel, Keith Richards, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Pretenders, Ramones and many more. In 1993 Living Colour released an album filled songs of alienation, social commentary and heavy themes that still resonate today. Stain was the first album with Doug Wimbish on bass, and the band fires on all cylinders with their unique brand of metal, sliding easily from funk to experimental to thrash and hard rock with ease. But two years later the band would take a five year break, and Stain would temporarily leave the band frozen on dark and foreboding note. Thanks to a Patreon pick, we revisit the record with fresh ears and take in all that Vernon Reid and his arsenal of guitar wizardry has to offer. After checking out our review of Stain, visit our Patreon page to hear our quick review of Living Colour's latest release - Shade from this past September. We're back with another “In The 90s” episode, this time tracking the chronology of rock legends KISS through the decade. After rising to fame in the 70s, the 80s were less kind to the band, who shed the makeup, band members and eventually albums sales through a turbulent time They entered the 90s on a positive note, with 1989′s Hot In The Shade scoring a hit with the power ballad “Forever,” but faced tragedy with the death of fan favorite drummer Eric Carr. While 1992′s Revenge initially sold well, it struggled to reach Gold and hte ensuing tour sputtered as the shifting musical landscape at the beginning of the decade pointed the band in a heavier direction foretold by the Revenge single “Unholy.” The eventual result would be 1997′s Carnival of Souls, with heavy nods to Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, but by the time of release it was an afterthought thanks to the 1995 MTV Unplugged performance that reunited the original line-up and stoked a short lived KISS revival in popular culture. The end result would be the 1998 album Psycho Circus, a reunion album in name only. It was a tumultuous ten years in which KISS would recapture their past at the cost of their future. To help us break it all down, joining our roundtable is Julian Gill, the man behind KissFAQ.com, author of a number of books on the band and host of the KissFAQ podcast, Joe Royland of Sit and Spin with Joe, and the Patreon patron who made this episode happen, Chris Martz. Join Scott and his special guests, Kevin and Hamish, as they breakdown and explain every little detail and reference from the Boston-themed episode of The Simpsons entitled "The Town"! Listen as Kevin and Scott give Hamish a full education in all things Massachusetts, from the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony all the way to Dunkin Donuts and Cumberland Farms! Hamish is still a little bitter from the treatment his native Australia received on The Simpsons years ago in the episode "Bart Vs. Australia", but he warmly embraces this hilarious take on New England life and culture! They'll talk all about the unique Jordan's Furniture stores, the New England Patriots and their various scandals, Paul Revere, traffic, Make Way For Ducklings, candlepin bowling, Quincy Market, Newbury Comics, and so much more! They'll explain every sign, every poster, every Boston joke, and every face in the crowd. So grab an iced coffee from Dunkies, turn off your old VHS recording of The Movie Loft, and get ready for one of the most detailed, comprehensive, and wicked awesome episodes of Hitting Play EVAH! We got together for a quick discussion about Marvel's return the Star Wars comics! The issue has been out for a week and has made quite an impact on both fans and sales numbers. This is probably due to its 75 DIFFERENT COVERS.The new story takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and features the original trilogy characters and original trilogy tone. (Possibly a little too much at times). But there's some real good stuff in this new issue including a potential link to Episode 7.Download Special Episode: Marvel Star Wars #1Look at the little guy in the corner in the jail scene. Then watch the Force For Change video for a possible Episode 7 link.Covers: Many more http://www.slashfilm.com/marvel-star-wars-1-variants/
