Ken Cieslak is a DC, AT but doesn't necessarily use the skills in that order. In this episode we discuss how it came to be that Ken pursued a chiropractic degree while keeping his AT credential and then ultimately staying predominately in the AT profession in the SSAT. It definitely surprised us. In this episode we talk about how he came to be dual credentialed and what that has meant to his career. We also discuss evidence based practice and what that means to him and how he employs it on a daily basis in his care of patients. We also cover service in the athletic training profession and what that means and why it is so important to Ken. Di'kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different. Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can't run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch. Racism is wrong. Hate can’t be accepted. Just not being “racist” is not enough to propel change. In order to help create change, we have to listen, work to comprehend and accept the fact that those in privileged positions can never understand what diverse people go through. ATChat hasn’t put a statement out because we needed to listen and learn from people that experience racism on potentially daily basis. We denounce any form or racism or hate, not only within the athletic training community but in the world in general. We will do more to help be part of the change that is needed to increase equality and work with our diverse professionals to succeed and feel safe while doing so. This roundtable discussion on Race in Athletic Training is a starting point and we can’t think Krystal, Ryan, Mercedes, Andrew, Brandon, Susan, Mike and Austin for being a part of the conversation and education. Roles got reversed in this episode as Austin and Greg interview Joel. Joel has talked for more recently about the importance of looking at AT Services, not AT Servants and the importance of working “with” coaches and fellow administrators, not “for” them. This has been a shift that has been occurring over Joel’s last 4-5 years of practice in the profession. The shift in thinking began when Joel started leading a group of ATs and started to see the amount of service and hours being requested of them didn’t match the compensation, not even close. The realization that while we can’t always control the salary we can control the hours to make that salary meaningful and allow time for a person to find alternative work. It also happened when changing the mindset to working “with” coaches and that while we are a service industry, professional courtesy can and should happen. Being adaptable is what ATs do, but that has to go both ways. Finally, we talk about ideas to help empower ATs moving forward and what research and education could be helpful. We held this roundtable to listen, learn, and find opportunities to try and make things better. #blacklivesmatter, racism and hate are still a problem. Anytime we take a trip down to Mueller Sports Medicine we have to make sure we get to talk to Richard Avis. Richard is always thinking up something new whether is comes to a new product or at least how to use a product in a different way that people hadn’t though of yet. This time we were there, Richard wanted to give us a primer on the Recoil tape, the duct tape of athletic training. This video/episode talks about the versatility of this tape and how many things it can be used for within the athletic training profession. You’re really only limited by your imagination when it comes to the use of Recoil. From taping thumbs, to covering lacerations on the head in a wrestling match, to wrapping the handle of your bat. The options are endless. We met up at Mueller Sports Medicine in the M Center to talk athletic training, how both of the podcasts got started and then we just let it go from there. We get into some of the best segments that Candid Athletic Trainer does including a Wisconsin themed best athletic trainer scenario. There are becoming an endless variety of settings for athletic trainers to work in. Coming up in a lot of young careers are the idea of working in Division I and the professional ranks. These goals are not bad in any regard but they may not always be what they think and there can be a misconception of working at other places that could provide just as unique and rewarding experiences. In this short episode we talk about the Division III experience and how it has been going for Austin who is just finishing up a semester long immersion and Joel, who has been in this setting for the past 6 years. Emerging settings in athletic training continue to evolve and in some cases they have ‘emerged’ (listen to the episode). Cody Tesch is on the front end of one of those settings, fire services. Cody is one of a handful of full-time athletic trainers that are dedicated to the service and care of a city’s fire fighter services and the steps Cody has made and where things are going are set to make an impact. In this episode we talk about what exactly Cody’s role in this type of setting is. We get very deep into how it has taken some effort for Cody to establish himself as a resource for this group and had to fight some long-held beliefs. Cody has had to work to gain the trust of the fire fighters and show them that he is there to help, not hold them out. In this episode we get to talk to Joanne Kinyon, an athletic trainer, who works at Bishop O Dowd High School. While BOD is not your “typical” high school the model they have established can be applied a lot of places. We talk about ideas on how schools on almost any level can look at nutrition, strength and conditioning and monitoring. All these factors can be looked at and set up for little to no cost. The creative ways that BOD has implemented multiple processes that allow for the entire staff to help the athletes not only achieve a high level of performance but also to recovery and reduce injury risk. The results were shocking. In this short episode we do a quick talk on these issues and some of things we are looking at in how “the tides can be turned”. Corey is a certified athletic trainer that works at UW-La Crosse (primarily with womens basketball) and also in a local physicians clinic as a physician extender. Corey has worked in multiple settings in his career including both a large and small high school, collegiate athletics and within a sports medicine clinic. We discuss how Corey has adjusted his clinical practice based on the demands of the setting. We dive into how he managed to triage hundreds of athletes in the high school setting while trying to maximize rehab in that setting. We discuss how that is different now that he works with a team of 18 and how that might change his approach. A great conversation with a lot of good take aways.
