Happy Hump Day, yo! Looks like another beautiful day in the Coulee Region. Got the lawn mowed, bike washed, laundry folded, and a few other things checked off the list yesterday, so today it's all about getting my knees in the breeze after work. In the news this morning, the former Tommy Bartlett Show land in the Dells has been sold, the WI DNR has suspended burn permits in 30 counties across the state due to an elevated fire danger, WeightWatchers is the latest company to file for bankruptcy, Burger King is facing a lawsuit alleging that the Whopper is smaller than it's advertised, Smokey Robinson is facing accusations of sexual assault from four former employees, and the "Deep Thought" boat in Lake Michigan has finally been removed. In sports, the Brew Crew won again last night against the Astros, we recapped last night's NBA & NHL playoff action and took a look at tonight's NBA & NHL schedules. Plus, an update on the death of a reporter at the Super Bowl. Elsewhere in sports, the winner of the Kentucky Derby will NOT be running in the Preakness, there's a lawsuit involving Shedeur Sanders' fall in the NFL draft, and the Rams apparently got booked into a hotel that was also hosting a "Furry Convention"…not once, but TWICE. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and we picked a winner for "Workforce Wednesday"! Plus, the latest list of the best states in America, and an early look at some Mother's Day stats & info. Cool story about a girl who was stuck in the hospital and missed her prom, so the staff decided to throw her a prom at the facility. And check out this woman who loves to brake for goats! The latest in a long line of animals on the field is a couple of ducks who decided to take in a minor league baseball game recently. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a naked guy in an airport, a woman in court for feeding her neighbor's cat, a meth-smoking raccoon, a #FloridaMan who married three different women in three different counties, and the "Delco Deucer".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Another incredible day in the Coulee Region with highs in the mid-60's today…might even hit EIGHTY tomorrow! Jean was out sick today, but Brian held down the fort. In the news this morning, the Wisconsin clerk who failed to count 200 absentee ballots in the November election has been placed on leave during an investigation, the latest on the Waukesha teen accused of killing his mother & stepfather, a festival in Wisconsin cracked the top five in a recent USA Today readers poll of the best festivals in the country, and the 4th of July fireworks in Eau Claire are back on the calendar! In sports, the Bucks take on the Lakers tonight, we recapped yesterday's Big 10 Tournament action and looked ahead at today's games, Aaron Rodgers is officially a free agent for the first time in his career, and AJ Dillon is on his way to Philly. We talked about what's on TV tonight and also got on the horn with Office Cora to let us know what she's doing in the 715 this weekend. Plus, it's another "Hypothetical Thursday"! Brian's question for Cora was: "What is the largest animal you could physically beat up" And Cora's question for Brian was: "If you could instantly learn one skill, what would it be" Not sure who's doing this…but apparently people are holding in farts. Which isn't good for you, obviously. We ran down a list of problems that can cause. Hulk Hogan is coming to the state of Wisconsin next week to promote his "Real American Beer" in Appleton, Beaver Dam, Watertown, Oconomowoc, Kenosha, Lake Geneva, & Waterford. But he might have some explaining to do about a recent appearance in New York. Did you hear about the ski-jumping scandal in Norway? It involves extra fabric in the crotch area. SCANDALOUS! And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaMan who burned down a strip club & threw a bottle of his urine at officers, a group of men in Memphis who got arrested for blocking an intersection by twerking in the middle of the road, a guy who went nuts on a plane & attacked a flight attendant after swallowing his rosary beads, a woman who allegedly kept her stepson trapped in a house for twenty years, and people are accidentally putting nail glue in their eyes instead of eye drops. Another brutally cold day in the Coulee Region. Looking up, though. Might see the mid-20's by Friday, and into the 40's on Sunday! Hello, car wash!!! Started the morning with an incredible story about a plane crash where no one died…even though the plane eventually ended upside-down! Plus, today's the primary in Wisconsin, so we reminded everyone to get out & vote! Also in WI, the latest on the Amber Alert for Sophia Franklin. Plus, they've already changed the name to the "Gulf of America", and if one lawmaker has their way, we'll be changing the name of "Flag Day" as well. On top of it being the WI primary, it's also "National Drink Wine" day…and we offered some suggestions on how to celebrate! In sports, we talked about the Badgers moving up again in the latest rankings and another game for Wisconsin tonight against Illinois. The Bucks are off until Thursday when they welcome the Clippers to Milwaukee. Tee Higgins is getting the franchise tag again from the Bengals, and we recapped yesterday's 4 Nations Face-Off action. Elsewhere in sports, the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin scandal is back in the news a decade later. We let you know what's on TV tonight and what's new for New Release Tuesday, and we also talked to Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports show! With Mardi Gras coming up in the next few weeks, we shared an interesting story about biodegradable beads, which contain seeds, so once they break down, they can sprout plants! Plus, an AskReddit thread pertaining to words we can NEVER spell correctly. Mine is recommend. Always get it wrong the first time. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a shirtless #FloridaMan who stole a cop car, carjacked a woman while running from the police, some thieves who used a UHaul truck to smash-n-grab $10,000 worth of LEGO sets, a couple of dudes in Colorado who attempted to use a cannon to shoot over $200,000 in contraband into a prison, and a woman in Australia who got a DUI for being NINE times over the legal limit. In sports, the Badgers had their seven-game winning streak come to an end last night at the hands of UCLA, and the Bucks look to make it five in a row tonight in New Orleans against the Pelicans. He’s the man behind the eats on Abe’s Raves, Abram Dyke, stopped in the WIZM studio to talk everything food in La Crosse. What the area’s doing well, what it needs to work on and why he started the page. How he got started is a pretty heart-warming story of helping struggling businesses. We also hit on what La Crosse does well for dining out, and what it’s missing. This conversation was a clash of two pallets. Dyke is a little more — or a lot more — cultured than this WIZM host, but he played along nicely, diving into things like the area’s best burger, pizza and fried chicken. Since eating food for a living isn’t quite his thing yet, Dyke works full-time as an ICU nurse so, of course, we had to go after hospital food a bit — though he points out that food is made for a lot of people in little time. Also, if you didn’t get enough of Dyke, he coincidentally will be the guest on Coulee Region Cooks at 10 a.m. Thursday on WIZM. In sports, the Bucks & Badgers both got wins yesterday, and the news on Christian Watson's injury is NOT good. Plus, a recap of "Black Monday" in the NFL. Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports Show also joined us just after 8am, and we also delved into the Skip Bayless/Fox Sports sexual battery lawsuit. We let you know what's on TV tonight and what's new for New Release Tuesday, and talked about the Hershey Bears setting a new record for their annual "Teddy Bear Toss". Funny story about a guy who was doing some remodeling in his parents' house & found one of his childhood Christmas presents hidden in the walls! And the Salvation Army once again had some rather generous, anonymous donations this year during their bell-ringing campaign. Did you know that 50% of Americans carry an extra pair of underwear with them "in case of an emergency"? If you're trying to get healthy in 2025 and are worried about getting the proper amount of nutrients, here's some warning signs! The Coulee Region of western Wisconsin, with the ups and downs of its many ravines, is a good geographical representation of today's up-and-down, back-and-forth politics. But the voters there are really more like the adjoining Driftless Area—steady and moderate. The 32nd State Senate District is made up of parts of both regions, where incumbent Sen. Brad Pfaff is facing a challenge that will test whether moderation is still a quality rewarded by voters. And dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser helps give us a final review of where the various campaigns stand when it comes to issues that impact rural Wisconsin. A lot going on in La Crosse this weekend on both ends of the spectrum, as Jean Taylor and Josh Hertel both join to talk about two big events. First (7:15), Taylor breaks down this new two-day party called Big River Rally on Friday and Saturday at the downtown Oktoberfest grounds and beyond. Then Hertel joins (18:50) to talk about Coulee Con, this gaming extravaganza, happening Friday-Sunday at the La Crosse Center.  Began the show, though, with a bit of a recap from the August primary, with the two Republican-written constitutional amendments being voted down, Tara Johnson and Rebecca Cooke winning Democratic primaries for state Assembly and US House. Big River Rally features a pair of concerts — Buckcherry on Friday and Jackyl on Saturday — stunt shows, a bike show, vendors, a veterans breakfast and a pair of rides through the Coulee Region, including one featuring WKTY's Bill Michaels and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree. For more info and tickets, click here. And, at the La Crosse Center, the 10th annual and possibly last Coulee Con — a tabletop gaming convention that's put on by Hertel, who is also the president of Coulee Gaming Inc. Get tickets for Coulee Con by clicking here. One of the cool aspects that we discussed was how Hertel gets sent never-before-played games, sets up tournaments with them and the winner takes home the game, which may be one of a kind or the next big thing. Hertel says this will be the last Coulee Con — for now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wisconsin state Assembly Rep. Jill Billings in the WIZM studio Monday for La Crosse Talk PM discussing some of the bills passed in the final session, including one that has La Crosse roots. We also talked how she's getting to know her new district.  One of the bills we discussed that Billings got passed, after years of work, is named Steve's Law, after Steve Johnson. He was a Coulee Region native who lost his sight as an adult and passed away in 2019. The law helps those with disabilities make outdoor recreation more accessible. Billings will also have a new district upon winning in November, so she talked a little about getting to know those voters by telling a story about Deke Slayton, as she went to the 100th birthday celebration in Sparta a few weekends ago. We also discussed a couple of funning things, like whether men ever put their coats over puddles for women to walk over, do men still lead when dancing and how we don't need wait staff singing happy birthday at a restaurant.  Oh, and how Billings is about to see her first NBA game — the Timberwolves-Cavs on Friday — so we played her some Anthony Edwards highlights. Later in the evening Edwards had what he called the best dunk of his career and also dislocated his finger — so we may have jinxed Billings' first game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Monday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy opening up the emergency exit on a plane & walking on the wing, a skier who got stuck in a gondola overnight, and a woman in Pennsylvania who was a victim of pepperoni vandalism. On Tuesday morning, we learned what it takes to have low emotional IQ, and tried to decide if we would be able to negotiate peace with aliens during an invasion. EP73: Solving the Biggest Problems Facing Agriculture Using Aquaponics with Kurt Wagaman of Superior Fresh

The Produce Moms Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2019 17:59

“When you marry aquaculture and hydroponics, you get aquaponics.”Kurt Wagaman (5:04 - 5:09) Kurt Wagaman is the GM at Superior Fresh, an industry-leading aquaponics facility specializing in leafy greens, Atlantic salmon, and Steelheads. Their facility is situated on a 720-acre native restoration property nestled in the Coulee Region of Wisconsin. Superior Fresh's flagship facility is the largest of its kind, filled with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. What is Aquaponics? Aquaponics can be broken down into two separate technologies Hydroponics, which is growing leafy greens in a greenhouse, and aquaculture, the practice of raising fish in a facility. When you marry the two, you get aquaponics. Aquaponics lets companies like Superior Fresh get certified as organic and achieve rapid and sustainable growth.  Superior Fresh's Incredible (and Sustainable) Output Superior Fresh can produce 8 million pounds of leafy greens annually and 1.6 million pounds of fresh fish. They use a fraction of the land and water when compared to the same output from regular land and water farming.  Superior Fresh is the first landlocked Atlantic salmon farm in the United States using recirculating aquaculture technologies. Their state-of-the-art systems allow them to bring in certified disease-free eggs and have complete control of the life-cycle from hatch to harvest. A Commitment to Sustainability Superior Fresh isn't backed by your regular venture capitalists. They're funded by philanthropists who want to create an example of using aquaponics to grow large amounts of healthy foods in a way that is sustainable and beneficial to the local area.  Superior Fresh has led restoration efforts to the point where they've restored hundreds of acres of land and water to where they were a hundred years ago. “Our commitment to sustainability carries as much gravity as one can possibly imagine from a startup.”  - Kurt Wagaman (12:48 - 12:59) Superior Fresh is focused on nutrient recycling. The vast majority of the water they use is recycled and plays a role in farming for both their fish and leafy greens. Superior Fresh supports local organizations, including the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as well as local high schools. They participate in focus study groups for the University of Wisconsin's marketing programs.  “Superior Fresh is a solution to some of the threats and problems that agriculture is facing.” - Lori Taylor (9:24 - 9:33) Two of the biggest threats facing agriculture are sustainability and the ability to feed an ever-growing global population. Superior Fresh addresses both of those problems by providing healthy nutritious (and delicious) food in a way that benefits the planet, and the local communities they operate in.  If you want to experience first-hand what Superior Fresh is offering, pick up some of their products at a local retailer near you. How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business!
