Welcome to the Summer Series! I'm going to be doing a series of solo shows on topics and questions I get through the summer, packaged up into bite-sized, easy-to-consume episodes for those of you enjoying your summer vacation.Today I am talking all about my journey of becoming a dually certified SLP, BCBA, a unicorn certification of less than 500 people in the entire world! Over my 20+ year career, I've gained some wisdom and learned some lessons that I want to share with you.I started my career as an SLP in a school setting. There I had my first opportunity to work with autistic learners and I loved getting the opportunity to see these amazing breakthroughs. But when I changed jobs to a clinical setting and had my first experience with ABA…I was lit up. We were working with learners who had traditionally been difficult to reach and helping them communicate for the very first time. As a provider, I felt true joy for these learners but also feelings of sadness that they had gone so long without access to their environment through communication when they really didn't have to.As I conclude this mini-episode, I share the time-consuming course work, resources, and testing that went into becoming a certified BCBA 12 years ago. I share this with you because I believe in the power of ABA to create a world where all students have a way to communicate and access their environment.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:Wisdom and lessons from a 20+ year career in SLP and Behavior Analysis. How did Rose become dually certified?Time consuming coursework and resources involved in becoming a BCBAMentioned In This Episode:Membership - ABA Speech

In this episode, I respond to a question from Emery in New Jersey, a school-based child-centered play therapist, about setting therapeutic goals in a school setting that emphasizes SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. Emery highlights the challenge of aligning the child-centered model with the school's goal-setting approach. I address this by emphasizing that the child-centered model does have specific and measurable goals, contrary to common misconceptions. I break down the four universal outcomes of child-centered play therapy—increased self-esteem, increased regulation, increased worldview, and increased emotional vocabulary—and explain how these outcomes can be measured and applied as SMART goals.   Podcast HQ: https://www.playtherapypodcast.com Play Therapy Training HQ: https://www.playtherapynow.com APT Approved Play Therapy CE courses: https://childcenteredtraining.com Email me: brenna@thekidcounselor.com Follow me on Twitter: @thekidcounselor   https://twitter.com/thekidcounselor   References: Cochran, N., Nordling, W., & Cochran, J. Welcome to another chapter of the "Crying In My Car" saga, where we dare to ask the hard-hitting questions like, "Why do history teachers only focus on the Civil War?" and "Is teaching in prison really as bad as it sounds?" Get ready for an episode full of eye-opening revelations. First off, Devin spills the beans about a platform that lets enthusiasts teach their passion to eager learners online. And to our Civil War-obsessed history teachers - come on, there's more to history than General Lee and Abe Lincoln! Then, we dive into the episode's heart: prison education. Could the clink be a happy place for educators? We've got some thoughts (and maybe a few yard scuffle-free lesson plans). In everyone's favorite Teachers in the News segment, we uncover a golden opportunity for teachers to earn a free Master's degree in English Language Learning, we celebrate a three-time cancer-surviving former teacher turned equestrian champ, we grapple with a Georgia teacher's firing over a gender identity book, and discuss a parent who took the anti-bullying message a little too far. Expect a heated debate over an email James shares, sent from a distraught parent to their child's teacher upon learning about their failing grades. Is this the time for a helicopter parenting discussion? James says,  "YES"! Lastly, parents, brace yourselves: James is coming at you with his list of the Top-Ten Most Difficult Types of Parents to Deal With in a School Setting. We promise it's all in good fun (mostly). So buckle up and get ready for a journey from the Civil War to prison cells to the wilds parenting.  -- Follow Devin at http://DevinComedy.com https://tiktok.com/@devincomedy http://twitter.com/devinsiebold http://instagram.com/devinsiebold Follow James at http://JamesYon.com https://tiktok.com/@jamesyoncomedy http://instagram.com/jamesyoncomedian A Bored Teachers Podcast https://boredteachers.com https://facebook.com/boredteachers https://tiktok.com/@bored_teachers http://instagram.com/bored_teachers http://twitter.com/bored_teachers

He was a gym rat who grew up playing in recreation leagues and on both the high school and college levels. But even he was shocked at the basketball-centric world he found himself in when he landed his first job as a coach as an assistant under Rick Rasmussen at Newton County in 2014. It was that mindset Jackson brought with him when he arrived at Social Circle as an assistant under Brian Anderson in 2017 to help turn around a program that had hit rock bottom. Social Circle hadn't advanced to state in five years, not even been close. During that stretch, they had a combined record of 23-99. Five years later, the Redskins find themselves 23-0 heading into the final week of the regular season and ranked No. 1 in the state in one prep poll. With a win over Washington-Wilkes last week, they secured the top seed in the Region 8-A Public tournament and a third consecutive berth in the state tournament. When Jackson took over in the next year, he inherited an uber-talented group of youngsters who not only had varsity experience but who understood and accepted the high expectations. Led by Branch and Reid, who averaged 20 and 15 points, respectively, the Redskins won 20 games. More importantly, they snapped a nine-year state tournament drought. Jackson doubled down last year, pushing his squad even harder and harping on every detail. That led to another key point in the Redskins rebuild. The Redskins went on to win 12 of their next 15 , including their first victory in the state tournament in over a decade. The momentum has carried over into this season in a big way. Social Circle has dominated its region, winning by an average of 34 points. In non-league action, the Redskins have 11 wins over teams in higher classifications. For the Social Circle boys basketball team, the heartbreak of losing to Drew Charter in overtime of the of the Class A public state semifinals Saturday night in Valdosta was compounded by the fact that they might actually have won. Ultimately, the game ended tied at 56 after regulation and the Redskins lost 70-66 after the first overtime period. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

Welcome to Episode #4 of the Back to School and Your Child's Mental Health Series   Back-to-school can be an exciting time for many parents, caregivers, and their children and for some parents/caregivers and their children, it can be an anxiety-producing time. With the start of the new school year, it is SO important that we talk about what your child needs to succeed. We know that success looks different for EVERY child. One major way we set children up for success during the school year is to think critically about the many ways that we can support their Mental health, and that's what this series is about.  This week's episode is the second part of my interview with Dr. Therese Morrison. Dr. Therese Clarke Morrison is the Director of School Psychology for KIPP NYC's Elementary Schools. Dr. Morrison also owns an Event Planning and Design firm that specializes in planning weddings, social events, and corporate functions. Most importantly, she is a wife, and mom of two boys— ages 11 months and 2 years old.  Like the last, this episode is PACKED with information. In this episode, we talk about “labels.” Very often, parents tell me they do not want to pursue services in a school setting because they do not want their child to be labeled. Dr. Morrison and I spend some time dissecting what labels are for about how they can be useful in getting your child appropriate services in a school setting. We talk about the stigma around labels and where it comes from. We also dive into what it means for a child to receive services in the “least restrictive” environment, the importance of not using the word “lazy” to describe a child's behavior, and so much more! Lastly, we talk about the best ways parents and caregivers can advocate for their children.  Connect with me!Note of the Week Website- https://www.drtashabrown.com Email Address- Dr.tashabrown7@gmail.com Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/dr.tashabrown/ Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/dr.tashabrown7 Connect with Dr. Morrison Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/drtmorrison/ Event Planning Company- https://www.instagram.com/theresenicole.llc/Register for the ‘Back to School and Your Child's Mental Health” Parent WorkshopIf you are looking for guidance on how to best support children in the transition back to school, The Back to School and Your Child's Mental Health Workshop was created just for you.
