"Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Lesley Woods, frontwoman of the influential post-punk band The Au Pairs. Known for their sharp political edge, fearless lyrics, and groundbreaking role in the late-70s and early-80s UK punk scene, Lesley helped shape a sound—and a message—that still resonates today. "It's easier to fall in love with someone that saved you." Those were the words of Brendan Banfield as he attempted to explain away an affair, a dead wife, and a dead stranger to a jury of twelve. In Part 2 of our deep dive into the VA v. Brendan Banfield trial, we move past the "catfish" plot and into the courtroom moments that sealed the defendant's fate. In this episode, we discuss: Brendan's Performance: Was he a grieving husband or a cold-blooded manipulator? We analyze his claims that Christine could speak after seven stab wounds to the neck. The Forensic "Gotcha": Why the defense's own digital investigator became the prosecution's best witness during cross-examination. The Fatal Flaw: The specific pattern of FetLife logins that proved "Anastasia 9" only existed when Brendan or Juliana were home. The Rebuttal: How a brief testimony from Brendan's supervisor, T. Smith Patrick, turned a "work meeting" alibi into a documented lie. Closure: The sentencing of Juliana Magalhães and what this case says about the "Double Murder" plot that nearly worked. On a quiet February morning in an upscale Virginia suburb, a 911 call shattered the quiet. An au pair reported an intruder. A federal agent said he fired his weapon to protect his family. By sunrise, two people had lost their lives. At first, it sounded like a tragic act: a heroic husband trying to protect his wife, Christine. But as investigators began pulling at the threads, the story started to unravel. In episode 392 of The First Degree, Jac and Alexis walk you through the double murder that gripped northern Virginia — and the arrogance, betrayal, and devastating choices that left a child without her mother and two families forever changed.
n the first installment of this explosive trial coverage, we dive into the Commonwealth's case against federal agent Brendan Banfield. What initially appeared to be a tragic home invasion and the heroic defense of his wife, Christine, quickly unraveled into a twisted plot involving an affair with the family's 22-year-old au pair, Juliana Magalhaes. We break down the prosecution's opening statements, which allege Brendan masterminded a "fake rape fantasy" on FetLife to lure an unsuspecting man to his home—setting the stage for a double murder he hoped to blame on an intruder. Hear the chilling details of the initial 911 calls and the star witness testimony of Juliana Magalhaes, who describes the moments Brendan allegedly turned a knife on his own wife. Prosecutors wanted her released. The judge refused.Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who confessed to helping Brendan Banfield execute a double murder, was sentenced Friday to ten years in prison — the maximum available under her plea agreement. Judge Penney Azcarate rejected the Commonwealth's recommendation of time served, delivering a ruling that sends a clear message about the limits of cooperation."Your actions were deliberate, self-serving, and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life," Azcarate said. "You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done."Juliana's testimony was essential to convicting Brendan Banfield on two counts of aggravated murder. Her attorney argued that without her cooperation, prosecutors had only circumstantial evidence. But the judge made clear that being the star witness doesn't mean avoiding accountability — not when you helped plan the murder, lured the victim to his death, and fired the kill shot into a man already lying wounded on the floor."The plan did not work without your full involvement," Azcarate said. "This could have been a very different ending where Juliana saved two lives."The courtroom heard from Joe Ryan's mother, Deirdre Fisher, who described losing her son — the man Juliana helped lure to his death through a fake fetish profile. Fisher still hasn't taken down her Christmas tree since the murder. It stands behind the urn holding her son's ashes."My son's life was used and thrown away, seen as worthless and utterly disposable by those who plotted and executed his brutal murder."Despite the ten-year sentence, Juliana's attorney says she'll serve approximately four years with credit for time served and good behavior. The prosecution recommended time served. The judge said no.Juliana Peres Magalhães — the au pair who admitted firing the shot that killed Joseph Ryan while Brendan Banfield stabbed his wife Christine to death — was sentenced Friday to ten years in prison. Judge Penney Azcarate rejected the Commonwealth's recommendation that Magalhães walk free after roughly two years behind bars, delivering instead the maximum sentence available under the plea agreement."You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done," Azcarate told Magalhães. "May it weigh heavily on your soul."The judge called this "the most serious manslaughter scenario this court has ever seen" and systematically dismantled any notion that Juliana was merely a passive participant in Brendan Banfield's scheme. She detailed how Juliana spent weeks messaging Joe Ryan, knowing she was luring him to his death. How she waited nearby and alerted Banfield when Ryan arrived. How she hung up when Christine Banfield begged her to call 911. And how she walked up to Joe Ryan as he lay moaning on the floor and shot him point blank in the heart."At any point for at least the month prior — or that day — you could have stopped this. The plan did not work without your full involvement."Joe Ryan's mother delivered a devastating victim impact statement, revealing she still hasn't taken down her Christmas tree since her son's murder — it stands behind the urn holding his ashes. "My son's life was used and thrown away, seen as worthless and utterly disposable."This episode features full analysis of the sentencing hearing, the judge's ruling, and what this means for cooperating witnesses in future cases.#JulianaMagalhaes #BrendanBanfield #AuPairAffair #ChristineBanfield #JosephRyan #FairfaxCounty #TrueCrime #Sentencing #JudgeAzcarate #HiddenKillersJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Maghaleas testified against her former boss and lover, Brendan Banfield, securing his conviction, thinking she was securing her freedom. The judge had other plans, and some harsh words for the 25 year old, telling her she should spend the rest of her life in prison for the murder of Joe Ryan. Prosecutors wanted her released. The judge had other plans.Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who confessed to helping her lover Brendan Banfield execute a double murder, was sentenced today to 10 years in prison. Judge Penney Azcarate rejected the Commonwealth's plea deal recommendation of time served — a stunning rebuke that extends Magalhães's incarceration by nearly eight years beyond what prosecutors agreed to.The courtroom heard from both families before the sentence came down. Deirdre Fisher spoke about losing her son Joseph Ryan — an innocent man catfished through a fake fetish profile and murdered in what was staged to look like a home invasion gone wrong. The Banfield family addressed the complexity of Juliana's role, acknowledging the manipulation she may have experienced while refusing to excuse her participation in the killings.Magalhães addressed the court directly, stating: "I know my remorse cannot bring you peace. I pray for forgiveness, and I have never forgave myself."Her testimony was crucial to convicting Brendan Banfield of aggravated murder. She detailed the plot, the fake profile, the night of the killings, and the moment she fired the shot that ended Joe Ryan's life. But Judge Azcarate's sentence makes clear that being the star witness doesn't mean avoiding accountability. This ruling raises serious questions about plea agreements and judicial discretion. What does it mean when a judge rejects a prosecutor's recommendation after a defendant has already fulfilled their end of the bargain? And what message does this send to future cooperating witnesses?Today's episode features the complete sentencing audio — every statement, every word from the bench, and the moment the gavel came down.#JulianaMagalhaes #AuPairMurder #BrendanBanfield #TrueCrimeToday #FairfaxCounty #DoubleMurder #Sentencing #JoeRyan #ChristineBanfield #CourtTVJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On the morning of February 24, 2023, police responded to a home in Fairfax County, Virginia. Inside, they found 37 year old Christine Banfield critically injured. A man named Joseph Ryan was already dead, shot by Christine's husband, IRS special agent Brendan Banfield. Brendan told investigators he had interrupted a violent attack and acted in self defense. At first, the explanation appeared straightforward. That narrative quickly began to unravel. Investigators discovered that Brendan had been involved in a secret relationship with the family's live in Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes. Prosecutors later alleged the pair had planned Christine's killing over several months, using an online account created with Christine's image to lure Joseph Ryan to the home under false pretenses. As the investigation expanded, evidence including phone records, online messages, purchases, and changes made inside the home raised serious doubts about Brendan's account. Juliana eventually accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify, directly contradicting the self defense claim. In February 2026, a jury found Brendan Banfield guilty on multiple charges, including aggravated murder and child endangerment. The case, now widely known as the Au Pair Murders, stands as one of the most disturbing family betrayal cases in recent years.Follow True Crime Recaps for weekly cases that examine complex investigations and the justice system.

Juliana Peres Magalhães testified that she watched Brendan Banfield stab his wife Christine. She admitted to helping stage the crime scene. She called 911 with him standing next to her.She walked out of court with time served on a manslaughter plea.Brendan Banfield is going to prison for the rest of his life. The jury deliberated nine hours. Guilty on every count. Aggravated murder. No compromises. No mercy. Twelve people heard the defense call Juliana bought and paid for—and convicted him anyway.Defense attorney Bob Motta breaks down what went wrong. The fundamental problem: the defense told jurors what didn't happen, but never told them what did. Banfield's DNA wasn't on the murder weapon. The digital forensics fight went nowhere. They attacked Juliana's credibility from every angle. But attacking a cooperating witness only works if you give the jury an alternative story. The defense never did. Then Banfield took the stand. A former IRS special agent who spent his career inside the system, apparently confident he could beat it. He told jurors that "no reasonable person" would kill their wife over a six-week affair with the au pair. They gave him life without parole.Bob identifies the moment this case was probably lost. He explains why putting Banfield on the stand may have sealed his fate. And he addresses the appeal grounds already taking shape—the cooperating witness deal, suppressed digital evidence, and a recent Virginia Supreme Court ruling that could matter.Prosecutors argued Banfield and Magalhães catfished Joseph Ryan through the fetish website FetLife, lured him to the house believing he was meeting Christine for a consensual violent encounter, then killed him and framed him for her murder. The jury believed every word.#BrendanBanfield #ChristineBanfield #BanfieldGuilty #JulianaMagalhaes #AuPairTestimony #BobMotta #DefenseStrategy #AggravatedMurder #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Amy and T.J. discuss one of the most elaborate and unthinkable murder cases they’ve ever covered with criminal defense attorney extraordinaire Alison Treissl. 40-year-old former IRS agent Brandon Banfield was found guilty this week of killing his wife Christine and a stranger he lured to his home, Joe Ryan. While Amy and T.J. thought the defense raised some reasonable doubt with two experts from the police department, Treissl pointed out all of the problems with Brendan Banfield’s testimony and why she and the jury just didn’t believe him. Two very different closing arguments in the double murder trial of Brendan Banfield. The defense ended strong, poking holes in the au pair’s testimony, saying none of it can be trusted, first because she has every incentive to cooperate with the prosecution and second, because the digital forensics don’t support the au pair’s and prosecution’s catfishing narrative. The prosecution sped though their closing, going through the evidence they presented, point by point, finishing in less than 20 minutes. There was no storytelling and little emotion, and ended with this conclusion: either you believe the au pair or you believe Brendan Banfield. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Both the defense and the prosecution have finished calling their final witnesses, and what a day in court! The cross examination of accused double murderer Brendan Banfield, along with the defense rebuttal, exposed some uncomfortable testimony. Banfield alleged his now deceased wife Christine had more than one BDSM affair and an obsession with sexual assault. Meantime the prosecution tried to score points with its rebuttal witnesses, including Banfield’s former manager. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
