Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 20th August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. To deliver Model Y and Model 3, the company dispatched three cargo ships from China. So far, two of the three have already reached the shores of Europe and docked at ports in several countries to deliver the long-awaited vehicles to consumers. Vessel Helios Ray with the first Model Ys for the European market arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on August 15, later it headed to Emden, Germany, and now it is in Bremerhaven, Germany. According to Tesla ship tracker @mortenlund89/Twitter, a number of Model Ys were unloaded in Zeebrugge to be transported to Norway in another vessel. - Glovis Supreme arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, into which the Model Y from Helios Rayl is supposed to have been loaded. After this, according to @mortenlund89, there were 1,300 Model Ys aboard the Glovis Supreme, which was delivered to Norway on August 20. The first shipment has arrived at the port of Oslo and over a thousand happy customers will soon take delivery of the long-awaited Model Y. GM just earlier this week confirmed that it planned to replace all battery modules on affected 2017-2019 Bolt EV models, subject to be adjusted after an additional investigation. It's now expecting to do the same with the rest of the Bolt EV population, including models recently delivered and those in dealer inventories. - The Bolt EV and EUV models use cells made by LG Chem in South Korea through mid 2019, and then Holland, Michigan from mid-2019 on. GM had previously said that the so-called “design level N2.1” made in Michigan were unaffected - GM now recommends that until customers receive new battery modules, they should set their vehicle to a maximum 90 percent state of charge, charge their vehicle more frequently and not allow it below 70 miles of range, and park the vehicle outside immediately after charging. - GM could potentially be replacing all the battery modules—or full packs, as it may turn out—in more than 140,000 Bolt EVs in North America, of which more than 110,000 are in the U.S. - The expanded recall would cost the company $1 billion more than what had been spent on previous Bolt recall efforts, and it stated today that it will seek reimbursement from LG Chem, the cell supplier. These generators are used for longer periods than the propulsion systems but operate at lower power, which makes it easier to replace them with battery-operated versions, - The company is aiming to replace 15,000 combustion engine generators on boats and RVs with electric-powered versions by 2023. - Consumers typically don't spend as much on fuel for their boats as they do for their cars, which complicates the cost-benefit analysis of going electric - The primary market for electric boats today is smaller lakes and waterways where the distance requirements are limited and speeds are lower. Most of the interest comes from Europe where certain municipalities that are highly dependent on boat traffic - The market is even more niche in the U.S.; one of the more popular applications is electric dinghies that ferry the well-heeled from the dock to their parked yachts - about 90% of electric models being sold today operate below 10 horsepower. There was a lot of super technical jargon, but here are the top four highlights of the day. - Tesla Bot: A definitely real humanoid robot - Unveiling of the chip to train Dojo - To Full Self-Driving and beyond - Solving computer vision problems Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/08/19/top-five-highlights-of-elon-musks-tesla-ai-day CHIP SHORTAGES MAY BE GETTING WORSE FOR AUTOMAKERS - Toyota announced that 27 assembly lines in Japan will be impacted by the spread of COVID, lockdowns and chip shortages. BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler also signaled a change in delivery expectations due to the shortage. Earlier in the year, BMW said it had ordered enough semiconductors and expected its suppliers to deliver, but in a recent statement, the Bavarians said that supply would remain tight in the second half of the year. The lost output was around 30,000 units so far this year. - Toyota will cut production worldwide 40 percent in September. That translates into 80,000 fewer models produced next month than originally planned. The production cuts will affect Europe, China, United States and other markets. In the U.S., just this month alone, Toyota will deliver 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles fewer than originally planned. - The latest production issues follow news that German chipmaker Infineon was forced to suspend production at one of its plants in Malaysia in June, due to a coronavirus outbreak. A large portion of the worldwide chip production is located in Malaysia - Most analysts point to a return to normality sometimes in 2022 Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/08/19/chip-shortages-may-be-getting-worse-for-automakers BATTERY POWER CAPACITY IN THE US GREW BIG TIME IN 2020 - Power capacity — a measure of how much power a battery can instantly discharge — for large-scale batteries grew at an unprecedented pace in the US last year, according to an annual report released this week by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). - 2020 smashed the previous record set in 2018 for the biggest growth in power capacity in the US with 489MW of large-scale battery storage added. That's more than twice what was added in 2018. - Big batteries can also step in when a disaster knocks another power source offline. So on top of cutting down greenhouse gas emissions, they can make the grid more reliable and resilient. - Electricity is currently responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. But a clean grid could tackle emissions from other sectors like transportation and heating as cars, homes, and buildings go all-electric. - Battery storage costs have tumbled 72 percent since 2015, the EIA found, which helps explain why the vast majority of large-scale battery storage power capacity available today only came online within the past six years. Hardware 4 is the successor to the custom HW 3.0 computer that's currently being deployed to the company's vehicles today. Comments about the Hardware 4 computer were made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during AI Day, which featured an in-depth discussion on the company's AI-driven initiatives. - Musk remarked that a HW 4.0 or FSD Computer 2 would be introduced in the future. This unit would be a step up from the already impressive HW 3.0 both in performance and safety. - HW 4.0 will be introduced in the Tesla Cybertruck “in a year or so.” Musk later noted that with Hardware 3.0, Tesla's self-driving systems could perform about 300% safer than a human, but for HW 4.0, this number could increase to 1000%. Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-hardware-4-cybertruck-release-date NIO ET7 WINTER TEST COMPLETED IN NEW ZEALAND - Since the NIO ET7 was introduced at NIO Day, the Chinese automaker conducted tests in various locations toward mass production. Among these tests was a fundamental and indispensable part, the winter test. This included a systemic and complete collection of dynamic tests on all types of low-adhesion roads to ensure a safe and comfortable driving experience for users in different scenarios. The summer season in China did not provide the environment and low temperatures the test required. However, New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere allowed NIO to complete the test promptly. - In July 2021, NIO spent a month testing the NIO ET7 in winter conditions. The renowned Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) of New Zealand, with about 4.9 million m2, boasts 37 snow flats, ice flats, and handling tracks. Situated in the piedmont area adjacent to the Cardrona Valley near Queenstown, a complex mountainous landscape simulated various test environments close to everyday vehicle-use scenarios. - The entry level 70kWh unit offers a 310-mile (500 km) range, with a 100kWh version offering 435 miles (700 km). The top model with a ginormous 150kWh battery pack has a claimed range of more than 621 miles (1,000 km). All the figures are calculated using the Chinese NEDC system. Tesla's "Autonomy Day" packed a lot of information into a few hours, but Kirsten, Alex and Ed all watched with interest and they have a few thoughts. The gang discusses Tesla's decision to develop a chip in-house, the demo video showing surprisingly little in the way of challenging domains and scenarios, the firm's vaunted "data advantage" and much more. All that, plus a brief discussion at the end about Rivian's deal with Ford. Don't miss this action-packed episode tackling the most controversial company in autonomous driving technology!
Erik and Bob take your questions. Pirated streaming devices are filled with malware, researchers say. South Carolina government website had a security flaw that exposed password. Our first caller with a nine-year-old laptop asks about recommended specifications for a new laptop. We recommend having 8 gigabytes of RAM, an Intel i7 processor, and a solid state hard drive as minimum system requirements for a new laptop. In addition, we like the HP Envy line of laptop computers. Tesla company explains their approach to self-driving cars in their "Autonomy Day" video. Today at Tesla's first Autonomy Day event, Elon Musk took questions from the press but didn't have time for questions about lidar. Historically, he's been vocal about the technology, and this time he put it as clear as he could. “Lidar is a fool's errand,” Elon Musk said. “Anyone relying on lidar is doomed. Doomed! [They are] expensive sensors that are unnecessary. It's like having a whole bunch of expensive appendices.

TESLA UNVEILS NEW CHIP, NEW COMPUTER So many outlets are talking about the Tesla Autonomy Day yesterday it's hard to know which comments to bring you, so lets start full nerd, as the presentation started with more gigahertz and teraflops than I ever wanted to know about. "Tesla has unveiled a new chip and computer for its cars custom designed by a team led by Apple veteran Pete Bannon. The hardware started full production in July 2018 and is already being retrofitted to employee vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said at the company’s first “Autonomy Day” – intended to showcase autonomous driving progress. Tesla has dropped NVIDIA’s products as a result." is the verdict of Computer Business Review: "The Tesla chip, built for the company by Samsung, is capable of 76 trillion operations per second (TOPS). It draws just 100 watts and includes what Bannon described as a “modest” GPU, with the aim being that as the neural net improves performance, the amount of post-processing the GPU does will shrink. The computer includes 12 A72 64-bit CPUs for general purpose processing that operate at 2.2. gigahertz." Pete Bannon said: "“In 2016 there was no ground-up neural network accelerator; everyone was adding instructions to their CPU or GPU or DSP to make it better for inference. I was hired in Feb 2016. I asked Elon if he was willing to spend all the money it takes to do full custom system design.” He said ‘are we gonna win?’ and I said ‘of course’ so we got a bunch of people and got to work.”. https://www.cbronline.com/news/tesla-chip-nvidia Fred at Electrek points out the hardware is already on the road: "Today, the company clarified that it was in all new Model S and Model X since March (start around March 20th) and in all new Model 3 vehicles earlier this month (starting around April 12th). Musk said that Tesla will start offering retrofits to current Tesla owners who bought the ‘Full Self-Driving package’ in the next few months." https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-full-self-driving-computer-details/ TESLA OUTLINES PLAN FOR ‘ROBOTAXI’ RIDE-SHARING SERVICE "Tesla owners who wish to use their vehicles for the Tesla Network will be able to manage their electric cars through their smartphone. Musk dropped several points of information that will be key to the Tesla Network’s Robotaxi service as well. " says Simon at Teslarati: "Among these is the vehicles’ longevity. The CEO noted that current-generation battery packs are good for about 300,000 to 500,000 miles, though Tesla’s upcoming batteries which will go on production next year will operate for twice as long, up to 1 million miles with minimal maintenance. Operating the Tesla Network will make the electric car maker a player in the highly-competitive ride-sharing market, which is dominated by giants such as Uber and Lyft. Thanks to their low operating costs as all-electric cars, Tesla’s electric cars hold an advantage. Tesla estimates that running a Robotaxi will cost around $0.18 or less per mile. This undercuts the $2-$3 cost per mile of ride-sharing." In a separate Electrek article Fred said: "On the app, Tesla owners will be able to add their cars to the shared fleet to earn money or summon an autonomous Tesla vehicle to pick them up and bring them to a destination. Musk dove deep into the economics of such a fleet — both from Tesla’s perspective and from the perspective of a Tesla owner. As we previously reported, now all new Tesla vehicles are equipped with what Musk believes is all the hardware necessary to achieve full self-driving through future software updates. He estimates that Tesla will have over a million of those vehicles on the road by the end of next year — around the time they start activating full self-driving capability" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autonomy-day-livestream-updates/ https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-robotaxi-network-self-driving-fleet-ride-sharing-cars/ One of the Electrek forum members MrXtraconservative said "People called Musk crazy when he said his rockets would fall from space, then safely land backwards. Impossible! Today is more of the same." STUFF ELON MUSK SAID ABOUT TESLA AUTONOMOUS CARS ON MONDAY, RANKED Gizmodo ranks how outrageous some of the statements were, with more Elons awarded for anything out there. The new Tesla micro-chip is “the best chip in the world... objectively” (Gizmodo say: according to Bloomberg, even Nvidia—which Musk said Tesla had already transitioned away from as a chip supplier to begin installing the in-house chip—admitted that Tesla had “raised the bar for self-driving computers.”. One out of five Elons) Tesla will have level 5 autonomy in 2020 which means they will self-drive so well “no one needs to pay attention" (Gizmodo say: “Claiming that the Tesla cars have the hardware for full autonomy and only need the software is like saying that we have seeds, we just need to plow, plant, nurture, harvest and then eat,” Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute engineer Raj Rajkumar told the Verge. “Basically they are at the starting point—full autonomy is many years away.” Three out of Five Elons) “Probably two years from now we’ll make a car with no steering wheels or pedals.” (Five out of five Elons.) https://gizmodo.com/stuff-elon-musk-said-about-tesla-autonomous-cars-on-mon-1834233680 GOOGLE MAPS HELPS YOU FIND OPEN EV CHARGING STATIONS IN REAL TIME "From now on, you just have to fire up Google Maps if you need to hunt for an open EV charging station." reports Engadget UK today: "The latest versions of Google Maps for Android, iOS and the web now show real-time availability for charging ports in the US and UK, giving you a better idea of when to go for a top-up -- you're no longer relegated to static info like before. The feature won't help you find a Tesla Supercharger (you don't really need that given Tesla's app), but it will cover the networks of Chargemaster, EVgo and SemaConnect, with Chargepoint coming soon." https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/23/google-maps-real-time-ev-charging-station-info/ EVGO AND MAVEN GIG INTRODUCE FIRST IN THE NATION PUBLIC-RIDESHARE FAST EV CHARGING HUBS At a special ribbon cutting event today, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined LA-based EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast EV charging network, and Maven, General Motors’ car sharing platform, to celebrate the introduction of a new, innovative network of EV fast charging hubs that feature both public and dedicated fast chargers for Maven Gig’s shared-use vehicles. Los Angeles is home to EVgo’s first local network of these public-rideshare fast EV charging hubs, which will include three locations across the city, further demonstrating the city’s role as a leader in transportation electrification. Today’s event celebrated the official opening of the Venice Crossroads fast EV charging hub located at 8985 Venice Blvd in Los Angeles. Venice Crossroads is located six miles away from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and adjacent to the 10 Freeway and the Metro Expo Line. The first hub in the network opened last month in the heart of Hollywood at the Hollywest Promenade Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo: "Our new network of public-rideshare fast charging hubs in Los Angeles is the first of its kind and will make charging quick and easy for Maven Gig members, while helping to improve access for all EV drivers across the city. Show #451 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 22nd April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. There was a new record set today here in the UK, 90 hours and 45 minutes is the longest coal free run in Britain since the industrial revolution, beating the previous record in April 2018. Not since we first started burning coal industrially have we gone longer without turning on a coal powered plant. Thank you to everyone in the UK with solar on their roof, and to everyone involved in the UK renewables industry. It means a lot to me personally to know all the EV miles I’ve done this weekend haven’t been powered by coal, wherever I’ve charged. From EarthDay.org: “Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity. The unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far reaching. If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy." CONSUMERS ARE CHOOSING BRANDS THAT SUPPORT THE EARTH "More than ever, consumers have become the swinging voters of product success. Most people are choosing companies that take a stand on important social, cultural, environmental and political issues." reports Forbes today: "That’s according to an online survey of nearly 30,000 people by Accenture Strategy, conducted across 35 countries between August and October 2018. Homing in on cars, Accenture Strategy investigated electric vehicle (EV) adoption and conducted a separate survey of 6,000 people. They found that the cost of EV batteries fell by more than 80% over just six years, which made the purchase price of battery-powered vehicles comparable to combustion engine cars. The report concluded that EVs are poised to overtake conventional cars by the year 2040. Consumers reported that environmental concerns would be their primary motivator to purchase EVs, followed by long term cost saving opportunities offered in comparison to traditional cars." https://www.forbes.com/sites/natalieparletta/2019/04/22/consumers-are-choosing-brands-that-support-the-earth/#60fb8fb4bf29 TESLA AUTONOMY DAY "Tesla is holding its Autonomy Day today, with the company inviting investors to its headquarters in Palo Alto, CA to get a deep dive into the company’s full self-driving initiatives." says Simon at Teslarati: "During the event, Tesla will be sharing its full self-driving roadmap to attendees. Several key executives involved in the company’s autonomous driving project such as CEO Elon Musk, VP of Engineering Stuart Bowers, VP of Hardware Engineering Pete Bannon, and Sr. Director of AI Andrej Karpathy will be addressing the event’s attendees as well. Investors will also have the opportunity to experience test rides in vehicles that are equipped with Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features that are yet to be released." Tesla says: "Tesla is making significant progress in the development of its autonomous driving software and hardware, including our FSD computer, which is currently in production and which will enable full-self driving via future over-the-air software updates. With a number of very exciting developments coming in the weeks and months ahead, Tesla will host investors on the morning of April 19th at our headquarters in Palo Alto to provide a deep dive into our self-driving technology and road map.” https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autonomy-day-livestream-updates/ VW I.D. NEO HATCHBACK PROTOTYPE SPIED ELECTRIFYING THE SNOW "Volkswagen has an electric hatchback in the works for its I.D. lineup. We haven’t seen very much of it, but our spy photographers recently caught a prototype testing in the snowy north." according to Motor1.com: "Our colleagues and all-around electric pros at InsideEVs tell us the VeeDub should have a range upwards of 342 miles (550 kilometers), utilizing a 150 kW motor. That will be the launch vehicle, but a lower-end model with approximately 205 miles (330km) of range should arrive within a couple of years." https://www.motor1.com/news/345949/vw-neo-hatchback-prototype-spied/ FIRST DRIVE: MG eZS TO BE NEW EV PRICE LEADER "MG WILL target a circa-$30,000 before on-road costs pricetag for its upcoming eZS all-electric small SUV, which could make it Australia’s cheapest emissions-free model when it hits showrooms sometime in the next 12 months." reports goauto.com.au: "Currently, Hyundai’s $44,990 Ioniq Electric Elite small car is the country’s most affordable all-electric vehicle (EV), while the MG eZS will compete directly against the South Korean brand’s Kona Electric small SUV that kicks off from $59,990. The electric version of the ZS will also sit atop MG’s small SUV line-up, with the Soul variant opening the range at $20,990 and the Essence priced at $23,990. ully charged, its 44.5kWh battery has a claimed range of 335km under the outdated New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) testing protocol. On the road last week for an exclusive drive, the MG ZS EV showed it not only paves a new road for EVs, but has impressive economy of ownership attributes for a broad range of buyers, including those who may not have previously considered an EV." https://www.goauto.com.au/future-models/mg/ezs/first-drive-mg-ezs-to-be-new-ev-price-leader/2019-04-22/78467.html FORD COUNTS ON HYBRIDS TO COMPLY WITH STRICTER EUROPEAN EMISSION TARGETS "Ford of Europe says that its coming broader range of hybrid models will permit it to comply with stricter European Union emission targets set for 2020-21 without the risk of paying fines." according to Automotive News Europe: "Many other automakers — led by the region’s largest player, the Volkswagen Group — are preparing an offensive of battery-powered vehicles that comply to meet the EU's latest CO2 emissions reduction targets. Ford will take a different route, counting more — like Toyota — on hybrids rather than battery electric vehicles. Ford is ramping up its launch of hybrids — with a special emphasis on plug-in hybrids such as the new Kuga compact crossover. Under an EU credit system favoring plug-in vehicles, any car emitting less than 50g/km of CO2 will count as two vehicles in 2020, 1.67 vehicles in 2021, 1.33 in 2022 and one by 2023." To help tackle climate change, the EU has mandated automakers selling cars in Europe to reduce industrywide fleet CO2 emissions to 95 grams per km by 2021 from 120 g/km last year. Each automaker has a different target based on the average mass of its vehicles. Ford of Europe’s 2021 target is 95.4 g/km, according to calculations by PA Consulting in Germany." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/ford-counts-hybrids-comply-stricter-european-emission-targets 2020 BMW IX3 ELECTRIC SUV SPOTTED IN MUNICH "BMW’s first ever fully-electric SUV was just spotted in Munich during typical testing sessions. The EV SUV based on the BMW X3 will arrive in 2020 and will not only be the brand’s first electric SUV, but also built on a platform that covers all aspects of mobility – internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric." writes BWMBLog today: "The new EV will be built atop the same platform as the current X3 which has been designed from the get go to accommodate an electric drivetrain. The iX3 will bring BMW’s new battery and powertrain technology which will be a 70 kWh battery pack, more than double the current biggest BMW battery – the 33 kWh pack in the new i3.
