President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated Julie Su to lead the U.S. Department of Labor. If confirmed, the former head of the California labor department would become the first Asian American cabinet secretary in the Biden administration. “Inside the Issues: The Podcast” hosts Alex Cohen and Sara Sadhwani discuss Su's politically charged, probably difficult, path to become Biden's labor secretary. They also analyze former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's journey to becoming the U.S. ambassador to India after the president renominated him. And they talk about the Los Angeles County supervisors considering an expansion of their five-member board that represents nearly 10 million residents.

Los Angeles is one of the most complex and fascinating cities in the country. Much like the rest of California and the Ten Across region more broadly, LA is on the leading edge of climate change—battling increasingly intense wildfires and water shortages, as well as socioeconomic divides that have resulted in a significant homeless population. The city also renders a compelling depiction of the American Dream tied with issues of immigration, global trade, transportation, and energy production. Leading such a city requires thinking beyond conventional boundaries.Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter chats with outgoing Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti about his time in office and the role of cities in our society to take on the country's biggest challenges. For more information about the Ten Across initiative visit www.10across.com.

The Lesson: Being a good person, growing alongside one's parents, enjoying the journey, not letting the highs be too high and the lows be too low, these are lessons for us all, but for serial entrepreneur Carter Reum, they have helped build a flourishing portfolio of profitable businesses, a strong personal foundation, and a life of gratitude. Notable Excerpt: “I always say respect the process, but I think I'm going to add enjoy the process. It really is respect the process, meaning if you do the right things the right results tend to follow. But one of the things my brother and I learned from our first company was... that the highs are never that high, and the lows are never that low, and it's really a defense mechanism... but by learning that muscle you tend to modulate it, and one of the things we found is that we actually don't celebrate the highs enough. "It is about the journey, and it is about enjoying it, but you've got to enjoy those good days. At M13, at our all-hands every week we do gratitudes where we just stop and people can submit them and we read them, we do to enjoy the journey, because win or lose at the end of the day you can have a lot of fun." The Guest: Carter Reum is a Partner and Co-Founder of M13, a venture capital platform that invests in and incubates cutting edge consumer technology businesses. M13 now has over $1BN over 3 funds and is currently launching its 10th incubated business co-founded with Tony Robbins and Peter Diamondis. M13's portfolio includes, Ring, Daily Harvest, FabFitFun,Transfix, Rothy's, Lyft, Capsule, Shef, Thrive Market, Cue, Capsule, Rho, Shef, and many others. An investment banker at Goldman Sachs, in 2019, Carter and his brother Courtney were appointed the first-ever Executives in Residence for the City of Los Angeles, created in an effort to merge the arts and entertainment industries by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. In a city struggling with rising crime rates and an out-of-control homeless crisis, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday proposed boosting spending for police and funneling a record amount — more than $1 billion — into housing and other programs to help those living on the streets. Garcetti said the spending aimed at homelessness, if approved by City Council, would be about 20 times the amount directed at homelessness when he took office in 2013. The proposal comes at a time when makeshift encampments have spread in virtually every neighborhood. A key part of the proposal calls for the city to purchase buildings and convert them into residences for homeless people. The spending plan was outlined in Garcetti's $11.8 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins in July, which now goes to City Council for review. Garcetti, a two-term Democrat, also called for boosting spending at the Los Angeles Police Department, including hiring hundreds of officers. The city had 397 homicides last year, the highest tally since 2006. Garcetti was nominated in July to become President Joe Biden's ambassador to India. But the Senate vote has been delayed by an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against a former Garcetti top adviser. The mayor has denied witnessing or being told of any inappropriate behavior. Garcetti's term at City Hall runs through the end of the year. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Schumer Hearts Dunst; Dune TriumphsPeople might assume that a politician who can get elected mayor of one of the nation's largest cities, and win reelection four years later, is on the way to bigger things. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti won election in 2013 and then again in 2017. As Thomas Buckley details in a March 13 article in California Globe, Garcetti emerged during the 2020 presidential race as a vocal backer of Joe Biden, and expected something pretty important in return for his personal and political loyalty to the winning candidate. But the new administration passed over Garcetti for the role of Secretary of Transportation, a decision Buckley suggests may have had something to do with the severity of L.A.'s homeless problem. Wallace Slams Fox NewsThere is no love lost between Chris Wallace, the longtime host of Fox News Sunday, and his former employer. After nearly twenty years at Fox News, Wallace has moved to CNN, where he will host the new CNN+ streaming platform. An article in the New York Times on March 27 written by Michael N. Grynbaum quotes Wallace saying that working at Fox News became “unsustainable” as Wallace, a political centrist, increasingly heard views that he felt crossed the line from conservative opinion that he respected even if he did not always agree with it, into irresponsible stances on the supposed theft of the 2020 election and the hidden sources of the January 6 unrest in Washington. Wallace's new gig at CNN+ will be an interview show whose acknowledged influences include such legends as Charlie Rose and Larry King.Amy Schumer Loves Kirsten DunstComedian Amy Schumer has issued a statement attempting to clarify that she meant no real disrespect to Kirsten Dunst, who was at the center of the second-most notorious incident at the 94thOscars Ceremony on Sunday, March 27.The incident provoked by Amy Schumer did not turn physical, but one can see how it easily might have. Schumer approached a couple of chairs on the floor of the event where Dunst sat with Jesse Plemons, her fiancé and co-star in the somber 2021 western film The Power of the Dog. She proceeded to call Dunst a “seat filler,” implying Dunst is a has-been B-list or C-list talent whom the organizers of the event brought on in a half-hearted and futile attempt to lend some prestige to the event and bump up its attendance numbers.A March 29 New York Post article by Leah Bitsky recounts Schumer's weak attempt to explain away the incident by saying that the event was choreographed and affirming that she loves Kirsten Dunst.A Dream DeferredIn further Oscars news, Quebec's most famous living filmmaker, Denis Villeneuve, has a good deal to feel proud of at this time. His visually impressive, mega-budget opus Dune won awards in no fewer than six categories, including those for visual effects, cinematography, production design, editing, sound, and score. Some directors would no doubt be awestruck at winning the most coveted award in just one of these categories, let alone six. But a March 28 article by Brendan Kelly in the Montreal Gazette notes that Dune did not win in the category of best picture. And not only did Villeneuve not win the award for best director, but he did not even receive a nomination in this category, something that could surely be a letdown at this point in his career, when you might think that Villeneuve is at the very top of his game.

State Senator Brian Dahle has thrown his hat in the ring to take on Gavin Newsom for the Governorship of California. Dahle is from Lassen County and currently represents the northeast part of California. A “David versus Goliath” challenge. Here are some quick facts on Dahle from ABC 10 News: He was born Sep. 20, 1965 in Redding. He lives in Bieber, Calif., with his wife Megan Dahle. He has three children. Dahle and his wife have a wheat farm and a related seed grain transport business in Bieber. He was on the Lassen County Board of Supervisors for 16 years before being elected to the State Assembly in 2012. In 2019, Dahle defeated fellow Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley in a special election for California's vacant District 1 Senate seat. He is on multiple committees including: education, transportation and environmental quality. He is currently vice-chair of the energy, utilities & communications committee. https://www.abc10.com/article/news/local/california/california-republican-state-sen-brian-dahle/103-d57b9ca2-2fc8-43b5-97e5-d3122ac9b0cb The RNC membership censured two Republican members who have criticized former president Donald Trump and the investigation of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. But then US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell rebuked the Republican Party officials for the censure. Personal Success as a Skier, Student, Model and Symbol of International Unity Eileen Gu won the gold in the Big Air freestyle event Tuesday while competing for China in the Winter Olympics. But this episode is much more than her athletic feats. Gu's “right double 1440 safety” scored a 93.75 and vaulted her into first place. Her lead didn't last long. She headed to her last jump needing at least ninety-three points to leap from third to first. Her final trick, called a left double 1620 with a safety grab, scored 94.5 points and landed Gu a gold medal. This is a remarkable story of personal achievement. After all, shouldn't these celebrations of athletic success be what the Olympics are all about? Sadly, too many people make this all about nationalist ideals and pitting one nation against another. Gu, an American citizen born in San Francisco, has been the target of a flood of hateful comments because of her choice to represent China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics… a decision based on her love of her mother who was born in Shanghai and raised in Beijing. In Eileen Gu's press conference, she discussed her gold winning performance in musical terms by describing the rhythm and motion of the jump. She discussed how this was about her own efforts to “break your own boundaries” and to highlight her character and perseverance on an international stage. This is a young lady that is pursuing her happiness in all dimensions of her life as an Olympic gold medalist, recent admission to Stanford, a piano prodigy, and a Louis Vuitton model. We also discuss Eileen's mother Yan Gu who emigrated to America, received a post graduate degree, and settled in San Francisco. She also was pursuing her happiness in a nation that historically has welcomed immigrants. California Lifting Mask Mandates We also discuss the recent lifting of the mask mandates in California for vaccinated people. The timing is interesting considering the recent, mask less photo ops of California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and high-profile Democrat Stacey Abrams. This is your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Friday, February 4th, 2022. I realize I’m probably not who you were expecting… My name is Garrison Hardie, and I am the Business Development Representative for CrossPolitic. You may have heard my ad before on some of our other shows, and now I’m pinch hitting for the news brief. Let’s see how this first at-bat goes, starting with A Christian app called “Pray.com” reserves the right to sell your prayers! https://faithfullymagazine.com/christian-apps-sell-your-prayers/ According to Faithfully Magazine, “Prominent venture capitalists are flocking to invest in Christian worship apps. The apps say users’ prayers are a business asset.” “Pray.com collects data about its users in multiple ways.
