Which leads into a convo about Donald Trump being convicted. Cuter questions the idea of the US dollar being bankrupt. Front Porch Concerts gets some attention with a performance from MC EIHT. The fellas also get into new music and then Nes brags about his Temu shopping finds. Electric Highways and truck drivers have Cutter riled up. Today is all about BARBIE. The new film, the doll, the legend. Too much hype? No, not enough. This month's new blockbuster film directed by Greta Gurwig starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has more than just the best one-liners “She's everything. He's just Ken.” It also provides theater audiences the opportunity to share howls of laughter delight about the humorous send up of the patriarchy, and also sob openly about what our lives could have been if more girl's imaginations were able to flourish as grown women, instead of us becoming accessories, enlisted in service of the ambitions of powerful men. Because Booked Up centers on books, our Barbie Book Club members today include M.G. Lord author of Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll, originally published in 1994. Plus, M.G. has a fresh 3-part podcast series out now called "LA Made: The Barbie Tapes” which includes audio from her one-on-one interviews with Barbie inventor and Mattel founder, Ruth Handler, among others. We'll get into that. M.G. has written for numerous publications including the New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. She is an Associate Professor of the Practice of English at the University of Southern California. Also joining the Barbie Book Club today is George Hahn. Cuter than a Ken Doll, more awesome than Allan, there is no better example of how to live an urban bon vivant life while on a bicycle than George Hahn. George – in his own witty words – “ is a self-made thousandaire playboy who wears tailored clothing, drinks coffee, talks on podcasts and occasionally writes and does TV.” You may know George from his screen roles in “Sex and the City,” “Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” and Miramax's “Kate & Leopold.” He also has a new podcast called Hahn: Solo and website GeorgeHahn.com that's spelled H-A-H-N that features menswear, grooming, lifestyle essays and advice. Ohio State is in desperate need to fill the shoes of players like Paris Johnson Jr. and Dawand Jones, as they declared for the NFL Draft. The loss of three starting offensive lineman leaves Ryan Day with a decision to make. Does he trust the players on the roster? Or does he bring players in to add depth and experience? The latter seems to be part of the plan as the Buckeyes recently added Vic Cutler to the team via the transfer portal. We all have our insecurities, and we've all gone through awkward periods of life where we feel ashamed or worried about those insecurities. Maybe, instead of hiding those insecurities, we need to find a way to take pride in them instead. Films not only entertain – they also probe social injustices and tell marginalized stories. Against a backdrop of increasing economic inequality, more and more people today are experiencing precarious living situations, poverty, and social exclusion. The book “Precarity in European Film: Depictions and Discourses” is a major new contribution to research into the representation of class in contemporary visual culture. In this book talk, Dr. Pablo Dominguez Andersen, communications director at De Gruyter, meets the volume's three editors — Elisa Cuter, Guido Kirsten, and Hanna Prenzel — to discuss questions of precarity in European cinema. What does precarity mean exactly? Is class still a relevant issue today? And can we identify common themes in these films, selected from across Europe? The volume brings together renowned scholars and early career-researchers in mapping the ways in which European cinema — whether mainstream or arthouse, fictional or documentary, traditional or experimental — engages with phenomena of precarity, poverty, and social exclusion. It looks at how the filmic traditions of different countries reflect the socioeconomic conditions of precarity, and it illuminates similarities in the iconography of precarious lives across cultures. The three editors are members of the Emmy Noether Research Group on Cinematic Discourses of Deprivation at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Potsdam. The book “Precarity in European Film” is the first volume in the new De Gruyter series “Film, Class, Society.” Link to the book ► https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110707816/html Contact us ► https://www.degruyter.com/publishing/about-us/contact FOLLOW US ► Website: https://www.degruyter.com ► Blog: https://blog.degruyter.com/ ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/degruyter.publishers ► LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/de-gruyter ► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/degruyter_official ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/degruyter_pub #DeGruyter #PrecarityFilm #ElisaCuter #GuidoKirsten #HannaPrenzel

Hi Gang: Happy Friday! Last week I focused on my article: :NYC's Mayor Adams' Immigration Theater of the Absurd It is time for NYC to end deadly “Sanctuary Policies” Today we will continue considering how the media and the politicians disingenuously declaring that the busing of illegal aliens to New York City and Washington, DC has turned every state into a “Border State.” For decades the focus of both parties is to secure the Mexican Border while blatantly ignoring all of the other critical elements of the immigration system. While much attention is given to the Border Patrol there the critical missions of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and interior enforcement have been ignored. Tonight we will change that and focus on ICE and its mutliple missions. It has never been more important that we truly learn how to speak with our fellow Americans in non-confrontational but in fact-based effective and persuasive ways. Immigration is one issue that should unite all Americans- if all of the facts were made known. Please read my articles. If you like them, post the links on FaceBook along with a link to my radio show. Be a part of my “Bucket Brigade of Truth” and tell your friends and neighbors about my program- and mywebsite, remember Democracy is not a “Spectator Sport!”

Every girl longs for friendships. Some enjoy one dear friend who knows them inside and out, while other girls enjoy a group of many friends, ranging in depth from acquaintances to soulmates. But, what about when struggles happen in those friendships? Mean girls? Drama? Social media blocks and conversations moved to “red”? How do we help our girls navigate conflict in a healthy manner? How do we encourage our more quiet girls in making and maintaining friendships? Maintaining friendships as adults is difficult enough, but parenting through the seasons of friendships with our daughters can be even more challenging. We invite you into our discussion over friendships during today's episode. We pray it will be a gift of encouragement and help you navigate the ebb and flow of fostering friendships in your daughter's life. We're so glad you joined us today. In this episode, Jen shares what she's learned about heaven (from co-leading a study for 100+ women). She also gives a super practical way to figure out how you can help a friend in need. Jen reminds us mamas to hold our children loosely. To realize we have the privilege of partnering with God, but ultimately how our children “turn out” is up to him. And this. . . It's hard in the crisis to build that support system. Invest in women's lives now. Not because you're going to need them in case you have cancer. But that the time invested in friendships, meaningful friendships is worth it.–Jen My biggest take-away from our conversation is to view my “to do” list as a “get to do” list. What joy to get to pick up my boys from school, to get to serve them meals, and to get to put them to bed! Wrapping up this summer may we all see our everyday in light of eternity. Be grateful for all our “get to”s. And invest in our sweet friendships. Read more of Jen's story: Personal Blog What we chat about: Jen's surprise engagement, surprise baby and surprise cancer diagnosis. Hope for the mom with chronic sickness/trauma/heartache. What Jen's learned about how friends help well. The truths Jen gained from studying Heaven last summer. Lessons for all of us to hold our children loosely. Dealing with temper tantrums and other challenging behavior when mom is sick. The value of building strong friendships. People always askme to recommend a portable Bluetooth speaker, and I reflexively mention the same one every time: the UE Boom. The latestversion of this portable powerhouse, the UE Boom 2, provides damn near everything most peoplewant in a speaker. It sounds great, the battery lasts half a day, and you can bring it anywhere. It's even waterproof and mudproof, so you can take it rafting. All that for $200. But that's still too much Bitcoin for most people.
7 AM - 1 - Donald Trump's CA Campaign director Tim Clark comes on to talk strategy and winning California with us. 2 - People have hot takes on the Harriet Tubman $20 bill story. 3 - The News with Marshall Phillips. 4 - Washington Post's Karen Turner reports on Facebook looking into adding a tip jar on posts.
The 100th episode!!! Seriously. How did that happen? The goal of this podcast has always been to help women keep God in the center of their mothering/lives. And to remember they are in the center of God's presence, in every moment. Today's podcast guest, Jen Clouse, successfully meets those goals. Making her the perfect 100th episode guest! Jen focuses our eyes on the everyday gifts. Seeing them as glimpses of heaven's glory here on earth. But she also reminds us that this is not our forever home. Jen's insightful perspective comes from a harsh reality. Her own mortality. Last December Jen was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. This holiday season may we all see our everyday in light of eternity. Be grateful for all our “get to”s. And invest in our sweet friendships. AND . . .in honor of the 100th episode (and Christmas). . . and in conjunction with today's episode theme. . .I'm giving away a copy of “Just Show Up” by Kara Tippetts and her friend Jill Lynn Butelyn: Connect with Jen: Personal Blog What we chat about: Jen's surprise engagement, surprise baby and surprise cancer diagnosis. **Throughout the interview hear surprise messages from Jen's friends: Jenn Dawkins, Molly Rhodes, Kay Wyma, Melanie Shankle and Amy Fisher (a.k.a. Gulley).
