Shoot us a Text.Episode #1057: Nissan eyes a fire sale to survive, Trump's tariff plan hits legal trouble, and GM claims Canada's EV crown from Tesla—at least for now.Show Notes with links:As CEO Ivan Espinosa wraps up his first quarter in charge, Nissan's financial stability hangs in the balance, with a massive debt wall looming and rumors of a fire sale to raise cash.Nissan has $5.12 billion in debt due in 2026 and plans to refinance up to $4.15 billion of that.Espinosa's turnaround strategy involves slashing 20,000 jobs, closing seven global factories, and cutting $3.46 billion in costs by 2028.To free up capital, Nissan may liquidate high-value assets—including its stake in Renault, prime real estate in Japan, and even its iconic Yokohama headquarters, which could be sold and leased back. With nearly half of its U.S. sales coming from imports, Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier is leading a $2B cost-cutting push focused on boosting retail sales, margins, and managing tariff risk.“We are not yet at the stage where we have to do something desperate,” said a board source.A federal court ruled Trump's use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs was illegal—but for now, those tariffs remain while the legal battle unfolds. The U.S. Court of International Trade said Trump exceeded authority under the IEEPA, targeting tariffs not tied to a valid national emergency.IEEPA-based tariffs targeted a wide range of imported consumer goods not tied to national security—covering electronics, clothing, and some vehicle accessories. The ruling gave the government 10 days to unwind the tariffs, but an appeals court temporarily paused that order.Tariffs under Section 232—covering cars, parts, steel, and aluminum—remain, keeping vehicle prices elevated.Retailers like Walmart warn prices may rise further, though Trump has publicly told them to “eat the tariffs.”GM claimed the top EV spot in Canada after more than doubling its electric vehicle sales in Q1, driven by fresh model launches and Tesla's sharp drop.GM sold 5,750 EVs in Q1, led by the Chevy Equinox EV and new Cadillac OPTIQ, outpacing Tesla's volume.Silverado EV and Hummer EV variants also contributed, with Hummer Pickup sales up 232%.Tesla's registrations in Quebec plunged 87%, impacted by paused EV rebates at both federal and provincial levels.Despite year-over-year gains, GM's Q1 total is well off the 15,000 units sold in Q4 2024.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

The days of the bare-bones work truck are slipping away. Sure, you can still buy a relatively Spartan workhorse, but it's going to come with some of the same creature comforts people have grown to expect from their commuters. The days of a fixed seat, fixed steering wheel and crank window piece of work equipment-on-wheels are all but dead. That said, the Work Truck name, and price positioning, will chug along, at least in the Silverado EV. The entry point into Chevrolet's BEV truck, the Work Truck trim cuts away the carpet and nice finishes on the inside, but the large screens and digital experience stick around. The powertrains, too, carry double duty between the standard commuter grade and the entry-level Work truck. Chevrolet kicks the Silverado EV off a dual-motor powertrain that's good for 510 hp and 490 lb-ft of torque. Feeding that dual motor array is a standard-range battery pack that's good for 282 miles, according to GM. Of course, you can bump that up to the extended range and net 422 miles per charge, or the max range battery for 492 miles per charge. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV WT and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a tour of the Silverado EV WT and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Murphy takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV WT, work trucks, and battery-electric pickups. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV WT special.

Production begins in late 2025. ----------------------------------------From Jeff's Car Culture files, we look at the 1960s "land yachts" that were massive, luxurious American cars known for their extravagant size, smooth rides, and powerful V8 engines. Models like the Cadillac Fleetwood, Lincoln Continental, and Buick Electra 225 stretched over 18 feet long, offering plush interiors with chrome accents, bench seats, and advanced features for the time. Their long hoods, wide grilles, and tailfins defined the era's bold styling. These cars prioritized comfort, floating down highways with soft suspensions. Gas-guzzling yet glamorous, they symbolized American prosperity and automotive excess. Though impractical today, they remain icons of 1960s luxury and engineering ambition. ----------------------------------------- The 2025 GMC Sierra Denali EV Max Range is a premium electric pickup truck offering an impressive GM-estimated 460 miles of range. Powered by dual electric motors, the Sierra EV delivers 760 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.3 seconds. It supports 800-volt DC fast charging up to 350 kW, allowing for rapid energy replenishment. The truck boasts a luxurious interior with premium materials, advanced features like Super Cruise driver assistance, and a towing capacity of up to 10,500 pounds. Shoot us a Text. With just 2 weekends left in the year, we're excited to share that the automotive industry is set up for an excellent finish to 2024. Meanwhile, Ford is ramping down its F-150 Lightning production until the new year to meet demand, and Gen Z may just save the malls.Show Notes with links:The automotive industry is gearing up for a solid 2024 finish as inventories stabilize and aggressive year-end deals lure buyers back to showrooms. Analysts remain optimistic about continued momentum into 2025, despite policy uncertainties.Total 2024 sales are projected at 15.8–15.9 million vehicles, a solid increase from 15.6 million in 2023. December's seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) is expected to reach 17.2 million, the highest since 2021.General Motors is likely to hold its position as the top U.S. automaker, with Honda having the most gains, overtaking Stellantis in market share due to Stellantis' estimated 15% sales drop.Retail leasing activity is up 19% YoY, fueled by record-high EV incentives averaging $8,202 per transaction. EV sales are forecasted to grow 12% in Q4, contributing to the year's estimated 8% EV market share.Despite falling interest rates (below 7% for the first time in a year), high vehicle prices push average monthly payments to $740—a $15 increase over last year and $150 higher than in 2019."We've gone from ‘wait to buy' to a new marching cry of ‘buy now before prices and rates climb again,'” says Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive.Ford has announced a temporary production pause for its F-150 Lightning until January 6, 2025. The decision reflects a strategic adjustment to align supply with actual market demand as the EV industry navigates a period of slower-than-expected growth.Ford sold 22,807 F-150 Lightnings in 2024, marking an 86% increase from last year. This performance places it well ahead of competitors like Chevrolet's Silverado EV (5,252 units) and Rivian's R1T (10,387 units). The pause at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan plant is designed to prevent overproduction and ensure dealerships are not overstocked with unsold inventory.Ford's strategy acknowledges that EV adoption is not growing as fast as earlier projections suggested, requiring automakers to balance innovation with market-driven production levels. As a Ford spokesperson explained: "We continue to adjust production for an optimal mix of sales growth and profitability."In a talk at the NeurIPS 2024 AI conference, former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever reflected on the foundational 2014 paper that shaped modern AI—and looked ahead to where AI is going next. The era of pre-training is ending as AI is running out of quality internet data, marking the end of "Peak Data." As Sutskever put it, "Data is the fossil fuel of AI."Sutskever says we should expect smarter AI agents, synthetic training data, and models that think more like humans And that future AIs could have true reasoning, self-awareness, and unpredictable decision-making.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
