Will Trump's Mass Deportations Lead to Death Camps?

Gaslit Nation

Assad's regime is on the brink of collapse. Romania and South Korea are showing the world how to stand up against Russia highjacking democracies. The U.S. has released a report stating that a foreign adversary is likely behind Havana Syndrome. This Monday, disinformation warfare researcher Dr. Emma Briant will join our political salon, to answer our questions about fighting back. These topics and more are covered in this week's bonus show, available to our Truth-teller level subscribers and higher. This week's bonus show also tackles questions from our Patreon supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher. Jacob asks: How easily could “mass detention” camps become slave labor camps under the 13th Amendment—and from there, devolve into death camps? Trump's promise to deport 11 million people can only be achieved through violence, and that violence would be carried out by those who take pleasure in it. To get to that point, Trump and his followers will defy the law, subvert the Constitution, as they did to come to power in 2016 and 2024.  Andrea and Terrell discuss the dangerous potential of Trump's authoritarian immigration agenda, the risk of a violent crackdown on Latino communities, and whether this could escalate into a full-scale Trump invasion of Mexico. They also explore the irony of Republicans attempting to deport Latinos, a group that could actually help strengthen the party's base. This discussion is available to our Truth-teller level subscribers and answers other pressing questions from our Democracy Defender-level supporters, including how to hold the media accountable. If you didn't hear your question answered this week, don't worry—our Gaslit Nation Q&A continues, so stay tuned! Meet the teams behind Top of Mind and Uncomfy in this special crossover episode, where we share stories of sticking with a challenging perspective while working on the shows. We are exposed to a lot of nuanced viewpoints as we put podcast episodes together, which gives us the perfect opportunity to practice what we preach: choosing to lean into discomfort instead of lashing out or shying away. We've found clarity about our own beliefs, empathy for the people around us, and also developed the skills to tackle tough conversations. Tune in to Top of Mind to practice engaging with important, complicated topics. Check out Uncomfy, too, where we're sharing stories of people choosing to engage in an uncomfortable moment instead of stepping back. And if you've had an “Uncomfy” experience lately, share it with us by emailing uncomfy@byu.edu. Guests: Top of Mind producers - Alayna Beck, Caleb Leach, Vanessa Goodman, and James Hoopes. Jeremy Carl: Yale, Claremont, Trump White House, Montana. Our guy in every sense of the phrase, Carl is one of those fortunate few who makes a living making good points. His incisive Twitter takes and threads (great one on Dominique Venner) mark the tip of the iceberg of a wide body of work in the vein of Christopher Caldwell and Christopher Rufo. He focuses on the intersection of culture/identity and law/policy—check out his work in American Mind and American Greatness—and is rapidly becoming the go-to guy on anti-white racism, a designation that, for reasons we discuss, makes us both uncomfortable. We talk about the history of race law and policy, whether the United States is a “white country,” and why the left doesn't want to call wokeness a religion.Keep an eye out for his upcoming book on the topic from Regnery, once called “It's Ok to Be White,” but now sadly renamed something less perfect. One of the most important lessons I have learned from Meta Commerse is the importance of white people telling their own race story. A significant part of the problem with our ability as white people to fulfill that task is due to the truth that because we are so conditioned by our white-dominated culture, we both don't tend to think about ourselves as having a race story and don't know how to go about telling our own race story. Gentle and wise guides like Meta have been helping us white folks learn to do that for over 25 years, but the burden needs to shift. We as white people need to take more responsibility in recognizing that we all and each have a race story, in beginning to tell our own race story, and in being more active in creating change away from the white-dominated culture. Robert P. Jones has given us a good model in his two books, The End of White Christian America, and White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity,. These books include Robert's own story, but focus more on the cultural level. They do not enable us as individuals know how to tell our own race story. My guest for this episode has provide us with such a resource. Dr. Benjamin Boswell has developed a course that can be used in multiple contexts and by a variety of people. Ben is here to tell us is own race story and then to give us an understanding of his course, why he developed it, and how we can have access to it. Rev. Dr. Benjamin Boswell (he/him) serves at the intersection of strategic leadership, spiritual formation, and social justice. In his professional capacity, Dr. Boswell is a preacher, pastor, author, civil rights leader, and sought after public speaker. Dr. Boswell is also a former infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard, a graduate of Marion Military Institute (AA), Campbell University (BA), Duke Divinity School (MDIV), and Saint Paul's School of Theology (DMIN) where his doctoral thesis was “Identifying Whiteness: Discerning Race through Spiritual Practice in the White Dominant Church.” Dr. Boswell was born in Lynchburg, VA, grew up in Bethlehem, PA, and graduated from high school in Kannapolis, NC. Before joining the staff at MPBC, Dr. Boswell served as Senior Pastor at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, NC. Prior to his time in Cary, Dr. Boswell was Pastor at Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, and an Adjunct Professor of Political Theology and Ethics at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies. He was also the lone clergy member of the NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture; a citizen group that worked to expose North Carolina's participation in the CIA's post-9/11 torture program. Dr. Boswell has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a pastor and civil rights leader. In 2021 he was was awarded the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Medallion, which is the city's highest honor given to a person who promotes racial equality, social justice, and community service. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Dr. Boswell facilitates spiritual formation anti-racism trainings called, “What Does It Mean to Be White?” and he is the author of the forthcoming book Confronting Whiteness to be published by Upper Room in July of 2022. You can learn more about and have access Ben's course from the two websites: brownicity.com, and myerspartbaptist.org. This discussion about privilege, race, and the American experience is very enlightening and also difficult to digest. Host Elliot Michael gold interviews John Barbour, born on April 24, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is an actor, comedian, television host known as host of the NBC reality television series Real People, for which he was also a creator and co-produce and is the only performer in TV to win Emmys for both entertainment and news shows. Barbour moved to the United States in the early 1960s. His comedy act, particularly his 1965 album It's Tough to Be White, dealt in part with civil rights and black-white relations. In 1971, he hosted a local daytime talk show on CBS-owned KNXT (now KCBS-TV) in Los Angeles. He also hosted the pilot for The Gong Show in the mid-1970s (walking away from the show in objection to its farcical premise and forcing producer Chuck Barris to step in front of the cameras as host), and was a regular panelist on the 1988 Canadian (US syndicated) version of Liar's Club. Barbour portrayed game show host Harry Monte in a 1975 episode of Sanford and Son. Barbour was the executive producer of the game show That **** Quiz Show (That Awful! Quiz Show) hosted by Greg & John Rice in 1982. Barbour wrote and narrated Keith Burns' documentary Ernie Kovacs: Television's Original Genius. He also directed and wrote the 1992 documentary The JFK Assassination: The Jim Garrison Tapes. This film covers the investigation of District Attorney Jim Garrison, who, after the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, decided to further investigate the official report given by the Warren Commission. The documentary hypothesizes connections between the assassination and the FBI, the CIA, the Mafia, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and other organizations and foreign affairs issues. The film won an award in 1993 at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. He directed and wrote another documentary, “The American Media And The Second Assassination of President John F. Kennedy,” which released to specific audiences in 2017, but saw a broader audience in 2019 when it was showcased in iTunes, Vimeo and Amazon. This follow-up documentary is an extension of his critically acclaimed "The Garrison Tapes," and has received significant praise for its detail and exposition on the subjects of the JFK murder and the evolution of contemporary Fake News. IMdB has scored the documentary 8.6 out of a possible 10. Rememories for Seniors - Hosted by Elliot Michael Gold “Nothing returns a memory as clearly as a song.” It only takes a few bars of the music we listened to at a sock hop, on our first date, on the car radio, or in our bedroom when something was happening that was important in our lives. 0207 - What About The Other “Other”? More Than A Black/White Conversation (w/ Duke Kwon)

Hosts: Isaac Adams & Trillia NewbellGuest: Duke KwonOverview: “The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.” (Luke 18:11)Should our conversations about race and the church only be black and white? What is lost if we don’t have a wider conversation, and what is gained from having a broader conversation that includes those of other ethnicities?Korean-American pastor Duke Kwon joins Trillia Newbell and Isaac Adams to discuss his experience as the other “other.” What is it like to be considered different than the norm? How has the model minority myth factored into the race conversation even in the church—and what is that myth?Kwon explains how different experiences can be even within certain cultures. Cambodians experience life differently than Vietnamese, and these experiences can be very different than that of Koreans. And yet, in Christ, we are one — how can we live out that unity? Kwon explains what pushes back against that unity and why many Asian-Americans will take about being perpetually foreign.“No matter how long you’ve been here,” Kwon said, “You’re always seen as different and foreign. People are always asking you where you’re from, and it leads to an ongoing sense of marginalization. It’s a subtle thing, but very impactful: When you get asked ‘Where are you from?’ your entire life, again and again, you start to internalize this message: I must not belong. I must not be from here. I must not be seen as a true neighbor.”Join Isaac, Trillia, and Duke as they discuss how Asian-Americans have been used as a foil for black people and how understanding what it means to be black and white in this country informs what it means to be Asian in this country.“If we’re going to unravel this crazy, broken, sometimes sinful knot that is what it means to be a racial person in this country, we need to get to the heart of the black/white struggle,” Kwon said. He continued to discuss why it is that people draw from other resources besides Scripture in this conversation, and why that leads to defensiveness. Yet it also presents an opportunity to the American church to mix up their conversation and biblically inform it so that conversations about race are a part of faithful, biblical discipleship.Links & Show Notes:1.
