Today we've got another necessary conversation for so many of us — we're talking with Dr. Ellen Hendriksen about her new book How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists, which came out January 7. It turns out, perhaps not surprisingly, that feeling a lack of enoughness is a widespread problem, and Ellen's book taught me so much about perfectionism — including that I apparently am one, even though I never would have thought that of myself. Perfectionism, as Ellen writes, can be used for good — it can help us have high standards, a strong work ethic, reliability, and a deep care of others — but it can also be used for ill, especially when it comes to our relationship with ourselves. Today on the show we explore the link between perfectionism and never feeling good enough; we talk about clinical perfectionism and where it stems from; how to stop putting our self-worth in the wrong places; seven shifts we can take to feel more enough; and so much more. Ellen has a Ph.D. from UCLA and completed her training at Harvard Medical School; she is a clinical psychologist at Boston University's Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and, in addition to How to Be Enough, she also wrote How to Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety. You might have seen her work everywhere from The New York Times to The Washington Post, BBC News, New York Magazine, Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today, Scientific American, The Guardian, Goop, O: The Oprah Magazine, and more, and she's here to help us stop being so hard on ourselves already. Ellen Hendriksen, PhD has just published her second book, How To Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists. I talked previously with Dr Hendrikson on this podcast on 1/30/2023 after she published her first book, How to Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety. In both podcasts, you will find her eloquent and deeply informative. In this podcast we talk about perfectionism and social anxiety. Her new book is fun to read and deeply informative on the topic of perfectionism. She describes the alarming increase in perfectionism and the 7 shifts that are needed to develop a more balanced life. For more information about Dr Hendrikson https://www.ellenhendriksen.com/

Impostor Syndrome "describes high-achieving individuals who, despite their objective successes, fail to internalize their accomplishments and have persistent self-doubt and fear of being exposed as a fraud or impostor."* I battle Impostor Syndrome. Studies show that 75% of professionals do. And the numbers are higher among women and minorities. A large percentage of lawyers also deal with Impostor Syndrome. Dr. Ellen Hendriksen and Professor David Grenardo joined me to discuss Impostor Syndrome. They explain what it is, where it comes from, how it can impact our mental health, and ways to cope with it. Now that we're "back to normal," it takes more than hitting 'Leave Meeting' to exit a boring talk! We skip the usual structure of our episodes and speak freely about preparing for and attending conferences as graduate students. We answer listener questions like, What's the point of going to conferences? Should I attend a conference as an undergrad? How do I socialize and connect with others at an academic conference? How do you manage the financial aspect of attending conferences? We also spill the tea on people getting roasted after their talks and our best and worst experiences of conference-going! In this episode we talk about what we think "social" refers to when we say that humans are social beings. In many of our episodes, we harp on the importance of avoiding overly individualistic conceptions of the human person in favor of sociality. But what is this sociality? Should we think it has ontological and normative primacy over the individual? Listen to our musings in Part I of the conversation. Every kid on the planet is told to, “Eat your veggies – they’re good for you!” Yet, as a parent, you probably shouldn’t say that to your kids. This episode begins with some fascinating research about what to tell kids about healthy foods and what not to tell them. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/don-t-tell-kids-why-veggies-are-good-for-them-study-suggests-1.1833274 What if I told you that nothing really goes viral? You’d probably say, “Of course it does – cat videos, songs, lots of things go viral.” Well, not according to Derek Thompson, senior editor at the Atlantic magazine and author of the book, Hit Makers: How to Succeed in an Age of Distraction (https://amzn.to/3iwagNK). Derek reveals exactly how things become popular – and it isn’t the way you might think. In schools today there is a lot of emphasis on typing on a keyboard rather than writing with pen and paper. So you may be surprised to hear the benefits kids receive by simply writing on paper – and maybe schools should re-think their policies that de-emphasize penmanship in early grades. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/science/whats-lost-as-handwriting-fades.html?_r=0 Who hasn’t been socially anxious?
