I don't know about you, but in my home the laundry room is considered one of the most important rooms. It's command central. When my kids were still at home it was also a disaster on most days. Oh, it might be clean for a few brief hours, but then when everyone started slinging off boots and muddy clothes, you'd never know I'd darkened the door that day. Many days the frustration of laundry, picking up clothes, blankets, cups and shoes (the list could go on infinitely) is overwhelming, especially with kids in the home. Before my children flew the nest, I'd get mad and start to spew at them, wanting to ask the question my mom used to ask us in jest (mostly), “What'd your last maid die of—overwork and underpay?” I always laughed at that question, but now I can appreciate the significance of it. That's sure what it feels like sometimes. Listen as I share a perspective I learned years ago that helped me no blow a fuse every time I walked in the door to a messy house and laundry room. Also, I'd love for you to become part of the Building Strong Homes Community and sign up for my email list where you'll also receive my baked spaghetti recipe. In this episode, Dave and Ann Wilson discuss the concept of a "sacred home" and how to cultivate an environment that prioritizes faith, simplicity, and connection over perfection. The episode opens with a humorous and relatable story about one host's embarrassing moment as a young mom when her parents unexpectedly visited and her house was a mess. Despite the chaos, she emphasizes the importance of creating a home where Jesus is at the center, not one that's always perfectly tidy.Jennifer Pepito, a special guest, shares her wisdom on the importance of simplicity in the home and the role women play in setting the tone for a sacred environment. She discusses the importance of decluttering, minimizing distractions, and ensuring that family time and connection with God are prioritized over maintaining a pristine home. This leads to a conversation about the need for balance in life, and Jennifer talks about the nine habits of rural life that bring peace and stability to mothers. One example she shares is the story of Madeleine L'Engle, who, despite personal struggles, maintained her commitment to faith and family, illustrating that balance can help moms navigate the chaos of life. The conversation turns to the topic of forgiveness, both in terms of personal relationships and the necessity of forgiving oneself as a mother. The hosts reflect on how unforgiveness can create bitterness, affecting both personal well-being and family dynamics. They share examples of how bitterness has affected families and relationships, noting that letting go of anger and resentment is crucial for fostering a sacred home environment. The episode also explores the topic of simplicity, specifically how it can help reduce distractions and allow for more meaningful connection with God and family. The hosts discuss how the culture of busyness, particularly in America, often leads to the accumulation of excess stuff, which becomes overwhelming. Instead, they suggest practicing simplicity by minimizing possessions and focusing on the things that truly matter: family, faith, and purpose. Finally, the hosts touch on the importance of prayer in creating a sacred home. They share the story of Amy Carmichael, a missionary who was deeply committed to prayer and sought to create a sanctuary for those she served. They emphasize the importance of making prayer a daily priority, even in the midst of a busy family life, and how doing so can align a mother's heart with God's purposes. The episode concludes with an invitation to dive deeper into the principles shared in Jennifer's book, Habits for a Sacred Home, which offers practical advice for living a faith-centered life in the home. One of New Zealand's finest voices, Marlon Williams has released his fourth studio album – written entirely in te reo Māori. The Kiwi musician has a global presence, having collaborated with the likes of Florence + the Machine, and toured with legends like Bruce Springsteen, bagging six NZ Music Awards and an APRA silver scroll. But for ‘Te Whare Tīwekaweka', Williams returned to his roots. Translating to ‘Messy House', Williams told Jack Tame the title is a metaphor for the pains of chaos and creation, and how creativity often comes from disorder. “You have a house full of, of ideas, and, and you sort of sit quietly and let them talk to each other, and then hopefully they form some sort of cohesive thing.” The idea of writing an album entirely in te reo has been floating around Williams' brain for a while, he was just waiting for an excuse to begin. “I grew up speaking a little bit,” he told Tame. “I went to Kōhanga Reo, but it all sort of drifted away from me again as I went into my, moved on into childhood, into primary school.” Although he drifted away from speaking the language, Williams didn't stop singing in te reo. “It's just such a, a beautifully, a beautifully sung language.” “I always knew at some point that I was gonna come back around and, and give myself an excuse." Dana K. White's message speaks to listeners who feel overwhelmed by the pressures of perfection, offering them the freedom to embrace the truth that our worth isn't defined by a spotless home but by God's unconditional love. In Jesus Doesn't Care About Your Messy Home, Dana reassures us that God's grace is present in every bit of our chaos, focusing on our hearts, not our countertops.Jesus Doesn't Care About Your Messy House is a book about God's grace, using an oddly specific example that feels both too unimportant and too daunting. The title doesn't mean, “Don't bother cleaning your house. Jesus doesn't care.” It means you need to stop thinking of each pile as something Jesus is mad about.Shame is paralyzing. Removing the shame from this struggle by understanding how God sees you, what He wants from you, and that He created you with exactly the brain that you have makes change possible. “Accepting that I am designed instead of defective removes the shame which allows me to finally make progress.”“Cleanliness is next to godliness” isn't in the Bible, but too many people assume the concept is true. That assumption is dangerous, both for those who love to organize and for those who are bewildered by their homes. “Grace isn't there to fill in the gaps after I've done all I can do, it's the entire foundation on which I stand.” Jesus “doesn't want you to depend on or rest in anything other than Him. Even good things (like getting your house under control) can cause your heart to get off track, and Jesus cares very much about your heart.”The first instance of Jesus directly calling out hypocrisy in religious leaders was triggered by the issue of cleanliness. He used their criticism of His disciples eating with unwashed hands as an example of their focus on tradition over truth and the danger of turning non-spiritual issues into spiritual issues.Weakness is a gift from God. Your weakness, your struggle, your pain, whatever it is, is there to help you understand that you need God. While cleaning isn't a spiritual issue, it is an amazing spiritual image, created to help us know God more through the way His creation works. Those of us who struggle with this issue have the opportunity to understand certain spiritual principles more deeply because of our struggle. Dana K. White Dana K. Unschooling moms are smiling everywhere, as Marie Kondo shifts gears about tidying up now that she has three kids.  We knew it was unsustainable. A little bit about Jen Kosuda: While I have been writing my entire life, I started to work on this four-part series, The Art of a Messy House, eight years ago. Then, after a time of fasting in 2019, I was prompted to let go of the past and “become who I needed when I was younger.” This turned my childhood wishes into my work, and I started publishing. In addition to this, being a middle school English Language Arts teacher adds experience to not only my writing but also my passion for my purpose. My main mission in life is serving God. Inspired by my faith and love for my family and friends, I now live to bring positivity to others each day. So far, I have published How to Be Kind and How to Be Fearless, two books in The Art of the Messy House children's part of the series. The Art of a Messy House is part of my mission to mainstream faith in a way that brings hope to others. After I was set free from decades of battling anxiety, anorexia nervosa, and depression, I promised never to stop sharing this joy and love with others as I learn to love my mess. Questions for you! 1. Let's talk about your relationship with rest. When your body is getting heavy and your attitude snippy, do you realize it might be time for a break? 2. How often do you feel tired or worn out? 3. Does feeling tired frustrate you? 4. Do you believe God wants you to press on and persevere even when you're tired and need a break? Jen and I have a good healthy dose of REAL TALK in this episode. We talked about how unrealistic expectations hold you back, feeling unworthy, anxiety, disordered eating, the perks of self-publishing, the benefit of a healthy perspective, and our relationship with Christ! There is something for everyone in this episode. Jen said something during the interview that I felt fit all of these topics under one umbrella, and it was the concept of already being seen, and being known. Whether we acknowledge it or not there is a strong desire in each of us to be known. I know I have felt it and still do, but the truth is we are already known. We are already seen by our creator, and this is good news! Holding this healthy perspective helps us to battle and conquer all of our struggles. Jen says: I was born and raised in New Jersey where I still live today with my husband, kids, and dog. In addition to this, I have been a special education teacher in the same school for over fifteen years now. While I have been writing my entire life, I started to work on this two part series, The Art of a Messy House, eight years ago. Then, after a time of fasting in 2019, I was prompted to let go of the past and “become who I needed when I was younger.” This turned my childhood wishes into my work and I started publishing. In this episode, I talk about where to start to get the house back on track after a Survival Mode season. I share my rhythms and systems that have helped me and my kids know what to expect when we are transitioning from full-blown Survival Mode back into "normal" life. Key Points from this Episode: It's OK to make intentional choices to let things like housework go when we are in survival mode, but we need to pick up the pieces when we are able to. Start with prayer. Then listen to the promptings of where to start. "Home Blessing Hour" every week for concentrated time to take care of the house. Go room by room. Garbage to the trash bag. Clothes to the laundry basket. Everything that doesn't belong into a basket. Put those items away. Sweep/vacuum the floor. Set timers for short increments to get bursts of cleaning focus from our children. Consider having some major incentives for after the house gets put back together. Talk with your children while you clean. Use it as a chance to bond as a family.
