At an animal hospital in the Northeast United States, a biologist takes blood from a sick loggerhead sea turtle named Honey Bun. Honey Bun。 This is one of the first steps scientists must take before treating and rehabilitating the turtle so that it can be returned into the wild. Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, may have some of the largest numbers of turtle strandings in the world. The number of turtles that became trapped on Cape Cod beaches has risen over the past 10 years. That information comes from the Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. This year, volunteers found 829 turtles washed up on the sand. About half of them were dead, including some that were frozen solid. That number is nearly twice what workers found in 2016 and nearly 10 times more than 2008. Some experts think the number of washed up turtles is related to climate change. A paper published in PLOS ONE notes that there were more strandings of Kemp's ridley sea turtles in years with warmer sea-surface temperatures. It added that of the threats to turtle populations, “climate change may present the broadest threat for sea turtle conservation.” Over the past 10 years, many turtles have been moving north from the Gulf of Mexico into the warming waters of the Gulf of Maine. There, they feed on mussels, crabs and other sea creatures. Cape Cod extends into the Atlantic Ocean, serving as a kind of trap for turtles. When the waters cool there, the animals start to have health problems, like developing pneumonia. They have problems moving and eating. Bob Prescott is the director of Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and helped to prepare the PLOS ONE paper. He notes that the sea turtles “know how to leave, but the Cape is like a trap – a hook within a hook.” If the turtles survive, it can take months before they are fully recovered. Adam Kennedy is a biologist at New England Aquarium's sea turtle hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts. He says that when the turtles arrive at the hospital “they look like they are dead, especially in December.” Other experts argue that climate change alone cannot explain the increased number of turtle strandings. Jeffrey Seminoff heads the Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service. He believes that the high number of strandings “probably results from the simple fact that there's more turtles.” Seminoff said that the recovery of the turtle population and “success of conservation efforts at the nesting beaches” could explain the higher number of turtle strandings. Kennedy, the biologist, said that he has mixed feelings when the turtles are released back into the wild. “It's bittersweet, because you spend so much time with them but ultimately every one of these guys getting back to the ocean helps the population.” Recently, Honey Bun – the turtle we met at the beginning of our report – and other turtles were taken to Florida. They were released into the water. Kelly Shaffer is with National Aquarium Baltimore, which worked with four other groups to organize the turtles' release. She noted that she feels a sense of “joy and accomplishment” at “being able to put them back out there.”

Earlier this month, the body of a juvenile gray whale was found washed onto a beach in Bandon on the Southern Oregon coast. Bite marks on the body suggested it was likely killed by orcas, which hunt gray whales. Typically, reports of a beached whale would trigger a response from government officials to authorize the collection of samples to determine the cause of death. But in this case, officials at the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department went one step further. Realizing the cultural significance of this discovery, they alerted the Coquille Indian Tribe, whose ancestral lands span the Southern Oregon coast. According to Tribal Chair Brenda Meade, “within an hour or so” about 50 Tribal members had assembled at the beach to take claim of this “gift” and honor it with an intergenerational ceremony that included prayer and song. Meade shares details from that special day on the beach, and how the whale continues to provide sustenance for the Coquille Indian Nation on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its recognition by the federal government.

Beached boat on the Long Beach Peninsula shows hazards of coastal waters Today we'll take a look at the ongoing story of a cabin cruiser that washed ashore on the beach on the Long Beach Peninsula. It's a story of a very lucky man and his dog, for sure - but what's next for them, as the boat sits aground on the sand? We'll talk about what his options are, and how marine salvage law, and state law, handle cases like this.

Daily Yonder reporter Claire Carlson heard stories of multiple beached whales on the northwest coast in January 2023. Beached whales are not that uncommon on the shores of beaches on both coasts, but the number of dead whales has been growing. Claire's interest was piqued and thus began her whale obsession.

Sipping on Blue Rock Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 2018, they reminisce about what they were doing when this wine was made. But that's not all! Sal and Bob cover a range of interesting topics in this episode, from the recent news about Gwyneth Paltrow's ski accident and the ensuing lawsuit, to a study suggesting that humans are getting dumber over time. They discuss the movie Idiocracy and how it seems to be becoming our reality, and how The Simpsons seemingly predicted the future in some of their episodes. Sal shares his latest TikTok wormhole adventure and praises Ralph Macchio's performance in the Netflix series Cobra Kai. Bob and Sal get emotional as they talk about movies that made them cry, with Bob recalling his experience of crying during the movie "A Man Called Otto" in the theater, and Sal sharing his emotional reaction to the movie "Beached." The conversation takes a political turn as they discuss the potential implications of former President Donald Trump's indictment and have a lively conversation about American politics. Don't miss out on the fun, laughter, and insights from Sal and Bob in this episode of the Sal and Bob Show!
Dom welcomes Congressman Scott Perry back onto the Dom Giordano Program, to discuss his time spent locally at the Jersey Shore after he attended a hearing yesterday looking to find answers behind a trend of dead whales washing ashore New Jersey beaches. Many on social media have pondered whether new construction of offshore wind farms may be a cause for the deaths, but were met with a piece in the Inquirer this week that denounces any questions about the topic as conspiracy theories. Perry tells why certain questions do deserve to be answered, explaining why he thinks there needs to be a pause on construction of these windmills until an investigation can occur. Also, Dom asks Congressman Perry about developments on the continued story centered on Hunter Biden's laptop, with Perry expressing why, again, we need answers and the importance of a President who is an advocate for America and not communist China. Since December, more than 23 whales have washed up dead along the East Coast of the United States. Some of the species at risk are endangered. Headlines have been quick to dismiss concerns that seismic surveys and underwater explosions to blast the setting for wind energy towers could be causing the whales to beach. The dead giveaway, however, is that federal agencies have issued permits to offshore wind developers that grant exemption from the laws against harassing or “taking” – killing – marine mammals. If wind farm development doesn't kill whales, then why did the wind companies and government agree IN ADVANCE to shield the wind companies from environmental laws that ban the killing of whales? - - - - - Jacki asks, “Where is the environmental movement?!” We might ask the same question about East Palestine, Ohio. All we hear is crickets. Why is it that the most spectacular environmental disasters of our time seem to be of little interest to an environmental movement that takes in over 4 billion annually for activism? Instead, the focus seems to be on redistributing trillions of wealth to those who profit from the “green” agenda - that isn't always so green.
Over the past few months, we've seen a lot of reports of weird things happening in the oceans - dead whales and dolphins washing ashore in New Jersey, crabs disappearing off the coast of Alaska, “red tides” filled with toxic algae in Florida. These things sound pretty worrying - are they a sign of serious damage to our climate? We discuss these concerns with Dr. Lisa Rodrigues, Associate Professor of Environmental Science, and Dr. Samantha Chapman, Professor of Biology, both from Villanova University. They tell us not to be too alarmist, and give us a realistic look at the state of our oceans and how we can help.
