Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.12.548701v1?rss=1 Authors: Lindsay, A. J., Gallello, I., Caracheo, B. F., Seamans, J. K. Abstract: Behaviours and their execution depend on the context and emotional state in which they are performed. The contextual modulation of behavior likely relies on regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) that multiplex information about emotional/autonomic states and behaviours. The objective of the present study was to understand how the representations of behaviors by ACC neurons become modified when performed in different emotional states. A pipeline of machine learning techniques was developed to categorize and classify complex, spontaneous behaviors from video. This pipeline, termed HUB-DT, discovered a range of statistically separable behaviors during a task in which motivationally significant outcomes were delivered in blocks of trials that created 3 unique "emotional contexts". HUB-DT was capable of detecting behaviors specific to each emotional context and was able to identify and segregate the portions of a neural signal related to a behaviour and to emotional context. Overall, ~10x as many neurons responded to behaviors in a contextually dependent versus a fixed manner, highlighting the extreme impact of emotional state on representations of behaviors that were precisely defined based on detailed analyses of limb kinematics. This type of modulation may be a key mechanism that allows the ACC to modify behavioral output based on emotional states and contextual demands. Copy rights belong to original authors. In this episode of Recsperts we talk to Rishabh Mehrotra, the Director of Machine Learning at ShareChat, about users and creators in multi-stakeholder recommender systems. We learn more about users intents and needs, which brings us to the important matter of user satisfaction (and dissatisfaction). To draw conclusions about user satisfaction we have to perceive real-time user interaction data conditioned on user intents. We learn that relevance does not imply satisfaction as well as that diversity and discovery are two very different concepts.Rishabh takes us even further on his industry research journey where we also touch on relevance, fairness and satisfaction and how to balance them towards a fair marketplace. He introduces us into the creator economy of ShareChat. We discuss the post lifecycle of items as well as the right mixture of content and behavioral signals for generating recommendations that strike a balance between revenue and retention. In the end, we also conclude our interview with the benefits of end-to-end ownership and accountability in industrial RecSys work and how it makes people independent and effective. “Your call may be recorded for quality assurance.” Customer service systems often automate call recording and processing analysis, but you can tell a lot by detecting the tone of a conversation. Los Angeles-based Behavioral Signals says its technology is more effective than humans at determining empathy and intention. Rather than attempting to detect the actual words being said and how they're used, there is the “acoustic” content of a conversation, Chief Executive Rana Gujral tells Bank Automation News in this episode of “The Buzz” podcast. Behavioral Signals was founded in 2016 and has raised a total of $7 million over two funding rounds, according to Crunchbase. With its tone determination technology, the company seeks to match each customer with the right service employee. “In a conversation, there are two big elements,” Gujral says. “One is the spoken word, and then everything else that's behind the spoken word or beyond the spoken word.” Behavioral Signals' technology measures conversational elements in real time, he tells BAN, and can place information in “buckets” of emotions, behaviors and propensities. From those elements and indicators, the company's systems can determine tone and empathy 15% more accurately than a human. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to transform our society from being very transactional into very empathetic. My guest is Rana Gujral, CEO Behavioral SignalsRana Gujral is an entrepreneur, speaker, and investor. He founded TiZE, a cloud software for specialty chemicals in 2014. He was recruited to be a part of the core turnaround team for Cricut Inc. where he built a first of its kind product for the DIY community and helped turn bankruptcy to profitability within a span of 2 years. Rana also held leadership positions at Logitech S.A. and Kronos Inc., where he was responsible for the development of best-in-class products generating billions in revenue and contributed towards several award-winning engineering innovations. He has been awarded the ‘Entrepreneur of the Month’ by CIO Magazine and the ‘US China Pioneer’ Award by IEIE. He has been listed among 8 A.I. Entrepreneurs to Watch in 2019 by INC Magazine and Top 10 Entrepreneurs to follow in 2017 by Huffington Post. Today he is the CEO of Behavioral Signals, an enterprise software company that delivers a robust and fast evolving emotion AI engine that introduces emotional intelligence into speech recognition technology. And this triggered me, and hence I invited him to my podcast. We explore the challenge with today’s voice technology and what has kept it from reaching its true potential. We discuss a variety of use cases that will create transformative experiences and impact when some of the limitations are taken away. Not only for us individuals, but also the level of business and society at large. Here are some of his quotes:Behavioral Signals was really driven from this sort of really intrinsic desire to improve voice communications and take it to the next level, whether it's communication happening between two humans or whether it's communication happening between a machine or a human. This is the best utopian experience that matches our human interests. And that's led to the whole voice first design movement. The whole promise was that we are going to take this to the next level, which means we're going to talk to our devices and devices are going to communicate back to us, as humans do. We could use those experiences to replace some of those elements in our livelihoods, and use those as companions. But that hasn't happened. That is why we are actually very rude to voice assistance in general, because we feel that they're beneath us, not because it's a machine, we know it's a machine, of course, it's not a human. But we also feel that, hey, it doesn't have the basic capability to understand how I feel. So, our mission is to really take that interaction to the next level.During this interview, you will learn four things:That solving critical problems is often not about following the right process, but connecting people that are on the same wavelengthWhy the secret behind growing momentum behind the adaption of your application is in making it human and empatheticHow you can exponential grow the impact your solution can create for your customers by capturing intent, rather than the transactionHow imagination and your ability to connect the dots into a vision are essential skills to create a remarkable software business See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Five to seven years ago we were speaking to NLP or speech-to-text as cutting edge technology, but fast forward to now, it’s no longer considered cutting edge even though it’s very accurate with brilliant business models built on top of it.Voice technology has been directed towards creating a wide range of solutions in different domains, and what Behavioral Signals focuses on is how words are said, and what that says to the state of mind of a speaker. Rana believes this is the aspect of voice interactions that’s going to be a game changer. He also believes that it is the aspect of voice interaction that has been holding the whole interaction piece of voice technology back. How the Technology Tells the DifferenceAt the core of Behavioral Signals’ engine processes, is the variety of outputs when an interaction is being recorded. They go after who spoke when (diarisation) where they deduce basic emotions like anger, sadness, happiness, and frustration. They also go after specific aspects of tone change which is the trend of positivity within the duration of a conversation. They are less hang up on what is being said, and are focused more on the emphasis behind the words. That tells them a lot.An example is a study that was done at Yale University where they took a piece of content from YouTube and just took the audio out of it. They then deduced the emotional behavioral signals from it and mapped it out. Then they turned the video on and analyzed both the audio and the video, looking at the facial expressions and body language of the people in the video, and added that to the emotional and behavioral map that they were piecing together. The natural expectation there was that when adding those additional data points, in addition to just processing the audio piece, they could get more accurate, but what they found was that they actually became less accurate. That meant that when they were mapping based on audio only; there was a higher score than when they were also looking at the video. What they realized is that we as humans are fairly adept at masking our emotions through our facial expressions, but we can’t do that with our tone of voice.Scientists have proven that if one can accurately create an emotional behavioral map of an interaction, or decipher the cognitive state of mind of a participant, and understand the context of that interaction, they can predict what that person will do in the near future, and in some ways predict intent. For example, Behavioral Signals is working with collections and banks to predict if a debt holder is going to pay their debt or not, simply by listening to a voice conversation. They have been able to do that with a very high level of accuracy. They are also working with another company that is building a software platform to cater to patients with depression. The company using Behavioral Signals’ technology to predict a propensity for suicidal behavior. The EthicsThe technology could be misused and so people must be careful when using it. He believes companies like Behavioral Signals have a responsibility to protect the data.We are going to rely more and more on inanimate systems and machines, and the systems/machines will become more intelligent than humans.Links and Resources in this EpisodeThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseRana on Twitter and LinkedinRana’s WebsiteBehavioral Signals Website See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode description:Rana Gujral is the CEO of Behavioral Signals, a company that allows developers to add speech emotion and behavioral recognition AI to their products. We discuss the many reasons why it's important that machines can recognise and express human emotion, including improving human computer interaction and boosting business KPIs. We discover why voice is the best modality for analysing emotion, then highlight some of the many business and consumer use-cases for this technology. Finally we dive into the signal processing pipeline that makes it all work, and Rana shares his advice for working with this technology. This is one of my favourite conversations of the year so far. It's a topic close to my heart, having previously worked on voice emotion transformation in the lab, and I feel it's one of the most important technologies to close the gap between humans and machines. Rana is also a very articulate and inspirational speaker, which makes this an unmissable conversation. This is a time-limited preview. Rana Gujral, an investor, noted speaker, and CEO of Behavioral Signals, delivers an interesting overview of the current state of AI regarding communication and user experience. Gujral has a proven track record in enterprise software, business building, and strategy, as well as emerging markets. Gujral's successful past accomplishments include his tenure as founder and CEO of TiZE Inc., a groundbreaking SaaS platform. Gujral was an essential member of the team for Cricut Inc. where he worked to build an innovative product for their DIY community which brought them to profitability within just 2 years. And earlier, Gujral held leadership positions with Logitech S.A. and Kronos Inc. Gujral discusses the AI that they are developing which, remarkably, understands the emotional context of what we speak. Gujral and his predecessors have long pondered the question: can you truly have artificial intelligence machines without emotions? Gujral states that this emotional element is a critical piece of voice interactions. With voice recognition accuracy now reaching its necessary apex, emotion and interaction is the next great frontier. Communicating intent is crucial. It's not just what is being said, but how someone is saying it; context and emotion are the missing links that Gujral's company is innovatively bringing into the mix. Gujral states that we gather more emotional context from hearing someone speak, much more than viewing facial expressions even. The technology expert and entrepreneur talks about various business use cases and how technology is enhancing our communication. He explains how agents can speak with clients and enhance their experience by utilizing the technology, as it provides helpful input that improves communication. For example, the tech can provide input about the call in real time that may provide a range of information from, ‘you need to speak faster,' ‘you sound angry, you should change your tone,' or ‘the client sounds upset,' etc., real-time information that can help improve the communication and thus enhance the experience for all parties involved. Gujral acknowledges that it is an exciting time for AI in general. AI is here and taking a more prominent role in all business transactions, and successful, forward-thinking companies are integrating AI technologies into their technology stacks, for improved communication, efficiency, and success.
