Welcome back to Wicked Problems. We know when we're outclassed so we'll leave the jokes to the professionals. Claire Brady and Richard Delevan were joined by Ben Carey and Nick Oldridge, the co-founders of Climate Science Breakthrough. Like most really good comedy it's deadly serious at its core - like spending your family fortune on a climate science comedy project instead of your kids. We hear about how the project came about, why they thought putting comedians like Nish Kumar and Jonathan Pie together with climate scientists like Dr. Fredi Otto and Professor Joanna Haigh might break through in new ways about the climate problems and solutions. Welcome back. As many of you know, we like to record an episode after each Career Conference capturing some of the Conference's best practices from a few of our most recent alumni. We have found that these podcast episodes help soon-to-be transitioning military officers get a good handle on what to expect and how to be as prepared as possible. This episode features three of our most recent alumni - each attending the June 2023 Career Conference. Ben Carey is a 7-year Space Force Captain who is going to go work for Campbell Soup Company as an Associate Brand Manager. Meredith Frey is a 4-year Army Logistics Captain who is going to go work for NextEra Energy as a Senior Project Manager. Jack Thompson is a 5-year Navy Cryptologic Warfare officer who is going to go work for Eurofins Scientific as a Project Manager. Each officer brought their own unique perspective to the conversation and was able to shed much light on their experience through the entire process, from the beginning of the Career Conference all the way through accepting an offer for employment. I am convinced that their insight will shape expectations and further develop the preparation plans for the officers in the Development and Preparation Program (DPP) who plan to attend a future Cameron-Brooks Career Conference. We covered a lot of ground through the conversation, essentially highlighting best practices and lessons learned from their experiences. We were able to cover some key questions, such as: What was your biggest surprise about the Career Conference? What did you do really well before the Conference that was pivotal in your preparation? Knowing what you know now, what do you wish you would have done differently to prepare for the Conference? What were some of the key criteria you used to choose the company you are going to go work for? What was the follow-up interview process like, and what was the difference between the virtual Conference in the in-person follow-up interviews? Toward the end of the podcast, I opened it up for those who attended the meeting live to ask any question of the panelist. My hope is that this podcast is helpful to you in your decision-making process and preparation for your future endeavors. AI-assisted healthcare is reaching maturity in many applications and could alleviate some of the capacity gap increasingly faced by health systems . Over the next three podcasts we focus on artificial intelligence tools designed to assist directly with clinical practice. Most commonly reported on are the algorithms capable of pattern recognition on medical images, that in some settings perform as well or better than expert diagnosticians at classifying disease. AI models have also been developed to perform regression analyses more complex than classical risk stratification aids. The standard statistical algorithms used to solve these problems struggle when many variables are introduced, in which case deep learning models that mimic brain networks are sometimes a powerful alternative. In this episode we explain how machine learning algorithms are trained on particular tasks and where there are risks of error and bias being introduced. In part 2, we identify the ergonomic issues that affect practical implementation of AI tools in the clinic and in the decision cascade. And in the final episode of the series we discuss the questions that regulators and lawyers should be asking of this new technology and what role natural language processors might have in medicine. Medical and administrative records are normally collected to help the management of patients or institutions, but it can be time consuming to extract metrics useful for practice improvement. The field known as Practice Analytics seeks to transform these data and provide clinicians with a bird's eye view of their case load and performance. Practice Analytics can draw attention to cases that stood out from the trend, not for any regulatory purpose, but simply to help clinicians reflect and improve. This could even act a shortcut to meeting the new requirements for CPD imposed by the medical boards. An in depth discussion with 3 of our students, Daphne, Chris and Brandon plus our mate, Angela and that guy Ben. Teresa hosted and gave us all a hard time. We discuss the camaraderie and the group dynamics aboard a smallish boat and how to feed the diverse dietary requirements. We talk about keeping things organized and the benefits of preparation. We conclude there's alot of value in dividing jobs and maintaining consistency. and that there are always days when things are challenging aboard a boat. There's an “Aha!” moment, when we discuss how there's plenty of wind and fog in Maine. We decided that we all need wax pencils. We recall the feeling of navigating blind in the fog, and then finding the green can that looms silently out of the fog! What a great feeling that is! It's confirmed – Morse Alpha Instructors have a lot of patience! During this expedition we rendezvoused with the Maine Windjammers at the Wooden Boat School and enjoyed sailing amongst them as they dropped sail and anchored together. We wondered why is there always poop talk on boats. Sailing out past the sight of land for the first time. is really spectacular… one of the best experiences of life. The Coast of Maine has beautiful geography and wildlife, and of course – lobster pots! But with constant vigilance you can easily avoid them. In Maine, there's also rocks, lots of them, they're like a minefield. Maine offers a unique experience to pack alot of learning into a short amount of time. We stood anchor watch when the wind picked up in a dicey anchorage. We rotated through the 45 minute watches very effortlessly, and quietly! We used the barometer to keep tabs on the pressure. We triangulated our position with lights ashore and used the radar to ensure we maintained a constant distance off the islands. Angela the mate reconnects with her first schooner, the AJ Meerwald, when we anchored near them one night. After the expedition, Chris & Brandon went back to their boat and were so excited to get out and go sailing with their new found skills and understanding. All of us left with a renewed sense of confidence, and alot of new skills. We actively sailed Rocinante, and time passed so quickly, because we were all so engaged.Produced by Teresa and Ben Carey, Angela McIntyre is our Assistant Producer and the music is by Tim Eriksen, Ben's brother. You can subscribe to The Morning Muster wherever you get your podcasts, or visit MorseAlpha.com. In addition to English, you heard Hebrew, Polish, and Spanish. שָׁלוֹם (sha.LOM) and יַאלְלָה בַּיי (YUH.lah bye) are ‘hello' and ‘goodbye' in Hebrew, which is spoken today by over 8 million Israelis as an L1 (native language) and statutory national language. Fun fact: did you know that when saying ‘hello' in Hebrew, you're literally saying ‘peace/harmony'? Dzień dobry (djen dOHbreh) and do widzenia (doh veedzENyah) are ‘hello' and ‘goodbye' in Polish, which is spoken today by appriximately 37 million people in Poland as an L1 and statutory national language). Pues, sin más preámbulos means 'Well, without further ado' (lit. 'Well, without further preambles…'') in Spanish, which is an Ibero-Romance language that is the statutory national language of over 20 countries world-wide. What do pop quizzes, cognitive science, and Francis Bacon have in common? They're all mentioned in this podcast! In this episode, we're talking about the Fluency Illusion. Whether or not you've heard of the term, we guarantee you're familiar with the phenomenon. Beware – its name may sound magical, but it's unfortunately no fun trick. In short, the Fluency Illusion is the cognitive process that can make you overestimate how much of the learning material you truly understand. It leads you to believe you can actively produce something in the target language just because you can passively understand it when reading or writing. The solution to overcoming this problem lies in active learning strategies. If that's what you came for, then keep listening! Sumn Conduit is the duo project of Indigenous Australian improviser and experimental vocalist Sonya Holowell , and modular synthesist and composer Ben Carey. Their debut release 'Track' highlights the unique marriage of their two worlds, and in this episode we embark on a wide-ranging discussion that covers the 'oneness and multiplicity' of their approach; using visual stimuli in improvisation; the meaning and contradictions of 'experimental music'; and Sonya's recent long-form article, 'Decolonising the High Arts'.https://sumnconduit.com/Read Sonya's article at https://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/article/opera-summit-decolonising-the-high-arts-part-aWatch Art Gallery of NSW 'Together in Art' performance https://youtu.be/wuxbHQImksQ
There isn't a lot to say about this episode, EXCEPT it totally ROCKS!!!! We got to interview/listen to stories from Ben Carey and Bryan Hopkins of Elvis Monroe shortly after their 12.5 hour trip back to Alaska for 2 concerts. From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to continually THANK, Ben and Bryan, again, for making themselves available. They turned a 10 minute interview into 50 minutes of fun before they had to run to go see Dennis Quaid. Check them out on Facebook @ElvisMonroeOfficial & online @ elvismonroe.com We hope you enjoy this eppy as much as we did recording it. Thanks for listening!!
Three-time Grammy award winner Sarah Jarosz on collaborating, mandolins and her tiny hometown in Texas. And the experimental, improvised performances of Sonya Holowell and Ben Carey.
How does a saxophonist become a modular synth head? How does a serial collaborator put out his first solo album? And how does anyone get roped into doing a see-all video like the amazing Surfacing (https://vimeo.com/346031783) film? We learn the answer to these questions - and many more- in this episode with the amazing Ben Carey. From his solo modular mischief to collabs with Sonya Holowell and others, Ben is in constant motion. In addition, he's also been working on visuals (most notably in collaboration with Zubin Kanga), has been exploring ancient Serge systems, and teaches composition at the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Yikes! You can get into a lot of his work (and see some great videos) at his site: bencarey.net. That Surfacing video that we discuss is found here: https://vimeo.com/346031783. And the new release by Sumn Conduit - Track - is available at https://sumnconduit.bandcamp.com/releases. There's so much more, but that'll get you started... Enjoy the podcast! Hey it’s Arroe. This is Play It Forward. A look at the unexpected changes endured by entertainers, writers, camera people and all others affected but not infected by the global invasion of the Coronavirus. The goal is to feature two different types of episodes. The individual conversations as well as a collected array of the entire picture. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 19: Elvis Monroe Be The Change Slowly we are reassuring ourselves that something greater will come of this strange place in global history. Four weeks ago who would’ve thought that every shape of entertainment would fall from the marque outside the building. Full tours brought to a close. Recording projects silenced. It honestly feels like the past twenty years have been unbelievably trying for each nation but never like we’re presently experiencing. Bryan Hopkins and Ben Carey front the band Elvis Monroe. Two best friends who’ve not seen each other in weeks. But it didn’t stop the music. This is a journey of birth. The arrival of the art you know delivered to the galleries we know. From a disaster masterpieces shall rise.

In the final regular episode of Las Vegas Shooter, Jim summarizes all we have learned, what is still unknown, and provides his opinion as to what really happened that night. He also interviews Bryan Hopkins, lead singer of the country music band Elvis Monroe about being at the festival that night. He was with his guitarist Ben Carey in front of the stage when Carey was shot. They perform the song “The Fight” which they wrote for the victims, providing a fitting and emotional cap to the Las Vegas Shooting deep dive.

The seventh of a ten part series looking at the aftermath of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, solely through the voices of members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Following the shooting, I began seeing members of the community openly worrying on social media, understandably for their lives, but also about the packaging of the attack both by major news outlets and elected officials. It seemed like coverage of the shooting was overwhelmingly formatted as cisgender, heterosexual people talking about members of the queer and Latinx community rather than talking to them. After frustrating hours of fruitlessly searching for perspective from the actual communities affected, I remembered that, in this modern world, I didn’t have to wait for any other outlet to have these conversations for me; I could do it myself. As I started thinking about the project, something else became painfully obvious to me: I couldn’t wrap my head around the weight of 49 lives lost. I heard about a news anchor reading all 49 names on air, and was surprised to hear that this simple act took seven minutes. That number, 49, by itself, can feel small. 49 cents, 49 seconds. I wanted to understand the enormity, the massive loss of life, by talking to 49 people who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community, to understand that weight. The interviews here are presented chronologically by recording date. I spoke with the interviewees for this episode on June 16, just four days after the attack, and where they’ve given permission, I’ve included their Twitter handles: 31. Shaquille @itsshaqii 32.
