Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 11, 2023 is: quixotic • kwik-SAH-tik • adjective Quixotic describes people and ideas that are foolishly impractical, especially as they pursue or relate to the pursuit of ideals. A quixotic person is often known for lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action. Quixotic can also describe things that are unpredictable. // Although they lived on opposite ends of the world, they shared quixotic dreams about the future. See the entry > Examples: "Lena Dunham doesn't care if you love her or hate her; she only cares that she tells a story honestly. When it debuted on HBO in 2012, her stunningly authentic semi-autobiographical show rocked a TV ecosystem that primed audiences to expect a dark comedy about four, white female friends in NYC to deliver a quixotic ... fantasy. Instead, the only fantasies it peddled were the ones that depicted a fresh-out-of-college confessional writer finding literati success despite a dearth of detectable talent." — Daniel Fienberg, Angie Han, and Robyn Bahr, The Hollywood Reporter, 4 Oct. 2023 Did you know? If you guessed that quixotic has something to do with Don Quixote, you're absolutely right. The hero of Miguel de Cervantes' 17th-century Spanish novel El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (in English "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha") didn't change the world by tilting at windmills, but he did leave a linguistic legacy in English. The adjective quixotic is based on his name and has been used to describe unrealistic idealists since at least the early 18th century. The novel has given English other words as well. Dulcinea, the name of Quixote's beloved, has come to mean "mistress" or "sweetheart," and rosinante, which is sometimes used to refer to an old horse, comes from the name of the hero's less-than-gallant steed, Rocinante.

more:fluentfiction.org/lost-in-translation-hilarious-adventures-of-foreigners-in-barcelona Story Transcript:Es: En la animada y cosmopolita ciudad de Barcelona, resonaba una risa sonora en un pequeño pero acogedor café llamado "La Sonrisa de la Luna".En: In the lively and cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, there was a hearty laughter echoing in a small yet cozy café called "La Sonrisa de la Luna" (The Smile of the Moon).Es: Ahí estaban Alejandro, María y Carlos, un trío de amigos inseparables que había venido a explorar esta ciudad rica en historia y cultura.En: There stood Alejandro, María, and Carlos, an inseparable trio of friends who had come to explore this city rich in history and culture. En: But there was a small problem: their Spanish was... let's say, very creative. En: Far from feeling intimidated, our friends dove right in, stringing Spanish words together in a way that would have made Don Quixote mount his Rocinante and ride towards the sun. En: Alejandro, a boy with curly hair and green eyes, took the lead.Es: Con cara seria y mirada intensa, se dirigió a la camarera diciendo: "Dos cervesas y tres resbalones, por favor".En: With a serious face and intense gaze, he addressed the waitress saying, "Two 'cervesas' (beers) and three 'resbalones' (slips), please."Es: La camarera, un poco confundida, le miró durante unos segundos, y luego cayó en una carcajada.En: The waitress, a bit confused, looked at him for a few seconds, and then burst into laughter. En: María, who was more shy with her pink hair and love for books, chuckled to herself. She attempted to make a simpler order, "A cup of coffee, please," but her pronunciation wasn't quite polished, and she unintentionally asked for a "cup of cat" instead. En: The waitress seemed even more amused now.Es: Carlos, siempre el payaso del grupo, rió a carcajadas mientras exclamaba: "Somos los picapiedras".En: Carlos, always the clown of the group, laughed loudly while exclaiming, "We're the 'picapiedras'."Es: Quería decir que eran principiantes, pero en su inglés natal, "rookies" se tradujo literalmente como "picapiedras".En: He wanted to say that they were beginners, but in his native English, "rookies" was literally translated as "picapiedras" (Flintstones).Es: A pesar de sus divertidas torpezas, el espíritu del trío nunca disminuyó.En: Despite their amusing mishaps, the spirit of the trio never waned. En: They turned every confusion into an adventure, a hilarious anecdote to tell. En: The café, "La Sonrisa de la Luna," became their regular spot, and all the employees and regular customers rejoiced in the group's antics. En: As the months went by, their Spanish improved little by little. En: They laughed at their old mistakes while sipping their coffee, or "gato" as they joked. En: But they never forgot the joy that their linguistic adventure brought to themselves and everyone they met in Barcelona. En: Finally, Alejandro, María, and Carlos bid farewell to the city and "La Sonrisa de la Luna," but not before promising to return. En: They had arrived as foreigners wanting to speak Spanish, but they took away much more: laughter, memories, and a very special love for the city of Barcelona.Es: Y así, este cuento encuentra su fin, en medio de risas y sonrisas, dejando a Alejandro, María y Carlos con recuerdos que charlarán y reirán en los años venideros, cuando recuerden esa vez en Barcelona, cuando intentaron hablar español y se convirtieron, aunque por poco tiempo, en los Picapiedras de "La Sonrisa de la Luna".En: And so, this story comes to an end, amidst laughter and smiles, leaving Alejandro, María, and Carlos with memories they will chat and laugh about in the years to come, as they remember that time in Barcelona when they tried to speak Spanish and became, if only for a little while, the Flintstones of "La Sonrisa de la Luna." Let's find out what the girls, women, and non-binary people of The Expanse did in season six, episode six, the series finale,  “Babylon's Ashes”. Transcript: The Women of The Expanse podcast, ep. 14 - “Babylon's Ashes”Introduction Welcome to The Women of The Expanse podcast. I'm your host, Didi. So, the series finale of The Expanse aired last week and already the fandom is discussing whether the show ‘stuck the landing'. I'll leave the whole ‘stick the landing' conversation to people who get paid to talk about TV. It's not really interesting to me. But I will say that I felt more satisfied by this finale than I did after watching the finales of all them other shows y'all love to compare with The Expanse. The show that's been called “Game of Thrones in Space”, managed to wrap things up fairly well for this book reader. I hope that maybe now we can stop making these comparisons when one show is clearly better. As for the much-maligned cold opens in Laconia, I see them as a follow-up to the mass exodus of Martians and their technology during seasons four and five. Where were those Martians going? Well, they went to settle planets beyond the Rings. Laconia is one of the settlements where the Martian way of life is taken to the extreme. That, plus the protomolecule experimentation leads to dangerous consequences for the entire solar system, as shown in books seven through nine. So for me, the cold opens served as a bridge that connected the Martian storylines from seasons four and five to the final sixth season. It also introduced us to Admiral Duarte, a character we'd only previously heard Sauveterre talk about. And we needed to know who he was before he hammered one of the last nails in Marco's space coffin. It can make narrative sense whether you've read the books or not. But people like to complain. That was gonna happen either way. Now let's find out what the girls, women, and non-binary people of The Expanse did in season six, episode six, the series finale,  “Babylon's Ashes”. CaraWe start the episode in Laconia with Admiral Duarte gazing up at the protomolecule monstrosity of a ship. There's a sense of success on his face as he watches the ship flash its blue lights on the planet. Cara's parents, Gary and Dot, are waiting restlessly in their home. Cara comes back finally and the parents' postures sag with relief. Cara apologizes for being gone so long and taking Xan's body with her. But she didn't know “how long it was gonna take to fix him”. Then the reanimated Xan walks in the door asking for a hug. Gary is freaked out by Xan's black eyes with no iris or pupil, the paleness of his skin and the twitchy movements he makes ever so often. He pulls a knife off the kitchen table and cuts Xan's hand. Black blood drips onto the floor. The wound heals right away. Gary locks Xan up in a cabinet and calls the soldiers on his hand terminal. They look around and Cara's gone again. Dot goes out looking for her. They find her hand terminal in the woods with a recorded message. Meanwhile, Cara has gotten Xan out of the cabinet and is headed into the woods with him. Xan reminds Cara that she can't eat anything in the forest. She'll die out here. But that's okay with Cara. She tells her brother that if she dies, “the dogs will fix her”. We see Cara through Xan's eyes, shot through with protomolecule. One last look at the protomolecule ship above Laconia before we leave this story. It's pretty much beat for beat what happens at the end of the Strange Dogs novella. ChrisJen AvasaralaLeaders from the UN, MCRN, the Belt, and the Rocinante are with ChrisJen on UNN One to make plans to engage with Marco before he gets to Medina Station. The Roci's going to hit the rail guns at Medina while the other ships go after Marco. Avasarala meditates in her quarters until she gets a message about locating the Pella. She tells a nervous junior UNN soldier that she will not stay in the rear guard. She needs to be up front and close enough to have real-time communication with the fleet. She is determined to give certain orders herself. The junior soldier keeps talking, this time saying that he's disappointed that more Belters didn't join the cause after her efforts to aid them on Ceres Station. But for her, that effort was “too little and too late”.Sometime after the battle, ChrisJen says that war ends at the negotiating table. She starts with things that everyone agrees on, ring traffic must be controlled, the creation of a transport union. But they don't agree on who should lead the union. After some back and forth between Camina and ChrisJen, they decide on giving leadership of the transport union to an independent party - James Holden of the Rocinante. Rosenfeld GuoliangRosenfeld got Filip reassigned to the bridge for this battle. She tells Filip that she got Marco to reinstate his son because she thinks he will be a better leader with Filip at his side. She thinks that Marco needs Filip, though he'd never admit it. She says that the rest of the Free Navy needs to be able to count on him. Filip assures her that they can. Rosenfeld meets with Marco to discuss strategy. The enemy has split their forces but Rosenfeld still does not like the odds. She'd rather fight after they'd made it to Medina behind all those Laconian guns. Marco hints at more surprises coming from Laconia. Walker's last stand against the Pella does some damage but doesn't destroy the ship. Rosenfeld gets hit and dies at her station. Filip tries to get her a medic but it's too late. Marco gets a surprise from Admiral Duarte but it's not the one he wanted. Duarte denies Marco's request for more weapons, closes communications between the Free Navy and Laconia, and warns that any ships that enter Laconian space will be destroyed. “You were a useful distraction, but I've got gods to kill.” That statement means more to readers of the last three books but also gives non-readers an idea of what Duarte's focus is. Filip comes in at the end of Duarte's message to tell Marco that his XO died. Marco shrugs off the news, saying it's an honor to die for the cause. Filip wonders aloud if they're dying for the cause or for Marco. Marco tells Filip that he cannot see what he's been given. Filip says he does now and goes back to his station. Marco gives a speech about the ‘end of the Inners'. But it's a speech with no conviction, given to weary, demoralized Free Navy soldiers. Filip has heard enough and turns his back on his father. Bobbie DraperBobbie and the crew of the Roci are on an ice hauler called the Giambattista. Fans will remember that before there was a Rocinante, the people who would go on to crew that ship first met on an ice hauler called the Canterbury. Full Circle. Bobbie and James reminisce about the former pilot as they unpack weapons and such. Bobbie, Amos, and the rest of the strike teams land on the ring station. But a lot of them get hit as they land. The railguns are using armor-piercing rounds. Bravo and Charlie teams are cut down to single digits before they can start the mission. Bobbie decides to bomb the railguns before the Free Navy can come take them over. She's hit with a lot of heavy fire but Amos shields her from most of it until the Roci can provide cover fire for them. At the end of the episode, we see Bobbie piloting the Rocinante. Clarissa MaoClarissa stumbles again, this time, it's in front of Amos. He tells her to get some rest. She says she'll do that once everything is ship-shape. Naomi gives her a task to check on the juice injectors  so she can talk to Amos. She hears a high-pitched ringing sound in her ears and falls down. When she gets up she goes to the medi-dock and lets it scan her. She finds out she has Complex Endocrine Collapse Syndrome (CECS). Symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, salt craving, seizures, weight loss. Average life expectancy is five years. The syndrome is a result of continued use of endocrine mods that increase the risk of sudden death. Instead of telling anyone, she decides to make the crew a home cooked meal of textured mushroom seco de carne and soy tequenos. Amos tells Clarissa that he's going to fight on the ring station, leaving her to be the ship's mechanic. She tells him he sure ends up being a hero a lot of times. The crew have a big dinner together before the big battle.During the fight against the Free Navy, she leaves the bridge to fix the reactor on the ship. She finds the problem with the coolant pipe but gets hit in the helmet. When Naomi comes to check on her a bit later, she's barely conscious but she's managed to fix the reactor without using her mods. “I'm gonna earn my keep,” she says. Camina DrummerCamina gets dressed while listening to the message that UNN One has located the Pella. She  takes one last look at Michio's bed before leaving her quarters. On the bridge, Liang Walker calls her and asks if the Belters will get cut out of negotiations should the Inners get to Marco first. Camina is not sure but will stick to her part of the plan for now. Their target is the frigate. If they destroy it first, they believe the rest will surrender or flee. Walker proposes taking the frigate instead of destroying it. And Camina seems to like that idea, a pirate till the end. Camina calls off any actions on the freighter, urging them to focus on the frigate. Camina watches as the freighter releases all the plates disguising them to reveal the Pella. They fire at the Belter ships in their way, destroying four of Camina's ships and cutting power to another five. There is a huge hole in the Tynan and Camina's pissed off enough to head straight for the Pella on a one-way mission. But Walker beats her to it. Camina watches until his transmission is cut short. The reactor on the Tynan is low but they can limp away from the battle. She tells her Communications Director to send a tightbeam to the fleet apprising them of the Tynan's status. She wishes the Rocinante luck, as they've done all they can do now. Camina becomes President of the Transport Union after Holden resigns. Naomi Nagata Naomi patches things up with Amos by comparing how Clarissa calls him boss the same way that Amos used to call Naomi boss on the Cant. Avasarala tells the Roci crew that Inaros will reach the Ring with what's left of his fleet. The UNN doesn't have any ships within range to cut Marco off from the Ring. She says she's sorry. The crew runs through several options. There's not enough time to power up the railguns using the Roci's reactor. No one wants to ‘cut and run' through any nearby rings and even if they did, they don't have enough fuel. They could hurl the Giambattista at the Free Navy and shoot at them with whatever weapons that the Roci still has left. Naomi has another idea. She has figured out a way to trigger the ring entities using all the mass and energy of the ice-hauler and the Roci's torpedoes, it could work. It's a bad idea, but the only one that they might survive long enough to complete. James is worried that once the entities are woken up, they might stay awake. As the Pella approaches the ring, Naomi flashes back to baby Filip. She closes her eyes and pushes the button to overload the reactor. The crew watches the Pella disintegrate with various looks of victory and relief. Naomi wails in agony for what she's done.  After resigning from the Transport Union, Holden asks Naomi if he did the right thing. She says he did, because he did it not for the accolades or ‘a pat on the head', but because it was what he believed in. That's all you can do, whether you know the outcome of your efforts or not. As she speaks, we see that Filip left the Pella during Marco's last speech. He got on his own ship and changed his name to Filip Nagata. Naomi may never know that he survived because of the things that she told him about Marco. All Naomi has is the knowledge that she tried. As Naomi tells James, “The universe never tells us if we did right or wrong. It's more important to try to help people than to know that you did. More important that someone else's life gets better than for you to feel good about yourself. You never know the effect you might have on someone, not really, Maybe one core thing you said haunts them forever. Maybe one moment of kindness gives them comfort or courage. Maybe you said the one thing they needed to hear. It doesn't matter if you ever know. You just have to try.” James brings up a few plot threads that the finale did not tie up. What will the Roci do for work now that the battle is over? What about the protomolecule sample? Naomi stops him and urges him to stay in this moment for a while. And we end the series with the Roci flying off into the vast expanse of space. OutroThat's it for The Expanse on television. For now. And that's also the end of The Women of The Expanse podcast. You can tweet about The Expanse with me @blackgirlsquee or email blackgirlsquee at gmail dot com and put Women of The Expanse in the subject line.  Thanks for listening.

Y yo me pregunto: “¿Qué estoy esperando?” Yo: ¡Cómo no! »Esa noche no puedo dormir.

An in depth discussion with 3 of our students, Daphne, Chris and Brandon plus our mate, Angela and that guy Ben. Teresa hosted and gave us all a hard time. We discuss the camaraderie and the group dynamics aboard a smallish boat and how to feed the diverse dietary requirements. We talk about keeping things organized and the benefits of preparation. We conclude there's alot of value in dividing jobs and maintaining consistency. and that there are always days when things are challenging aboard a boat. There's an “Aha!” moment, when we discuss how there's plenty of wind and fog in Maine. We decided that we all need wax pencils. We recall the feeling of navigating blind in the fog, and then finding the green can that looms silently out of the fog! What a great feeling that is! It's confirmed – Morse Alpha Instructors have a lot of patience! During this expedition we rendezvoused with the Maine Windjammers at the Wooden Boat School and enjoyed sailing amongst them as they dropped sail and anchored together. We wondered why is there always poop talk on boats. Sailing out past the sight of land for the first time. is really spectacular… one of the best experiences of life. The Coast of Maine has beautiful geography and wildlife, and of course – lobster pots! But with constant vigilance you can easily avoid them. In Maine, there's also rocks, lots of them, they're like a minefield. Maine offers a unique experience to pack alot of learning into a short amount of time. We stood anchor watch when the wind picked up in a dicey anchorage. We rotated through the 45 minute watches very effortlessly, and quietly! We used the barometer to keep tabs on the pressure. We triangulated our position with lights ashore and used the radar to ensure we maintained a constant distance off the islands. Angela the mate reconnects with her first schooner, the AJ Meerwald, when we anchored near them one night. After the expedition, Chris & Brandon went back to their boat and were so excited to get out and go sailing with their new found skills and understanding. All of us left with a renewed sense of confidence, and alot of new skills. We actively sailed Rocinante, and time passed so quickly, because we were all so engaged.Produced by Teresa and Ben Carey, Angela McIntyre is our Assistant Producer and the music is by Tim Eriksen, Ben's brother. You can subscribe to The Morning Muster wherever you get your podcasts, or visit MorseAlpha.com. They were easy to store and deploy, and super stout. And, fiorentino is offering discount if you mention the Morning Muster Podcast.Music:Tim Eriksen, Ben's Brother.Rough Outline:What's your food philosophy?! When you're eating your best, you're eating your best! How to store food for a passage with 6 people aboard. We try to remove as much trash as possible and get rid of the styrofoam, and plastic packaging. We like to pre-freeze our meat. But we don't bother removing labels on cans, but we don't even buy that much canned food. How do you balance how much produce to bring and know how much to buy before it goes bad? We generally eat all the produce first. We like using inventory lists and a menu to help keep track of what we have. But early on in the passage, theres more seasickness. Day 1 is usually pasta, because it's easy on the belly. The next few days are tacos with rice and beans and various toppings, depending on how you are feeling. But rice and beans and tortillas are usually pretty good options for seasickness and settling stomachs. John likes to plan out meals, and has it all worked out in his head, and cooks during his passages.Cooking in the galley is a nice time to just chill and putter around in a little galley-oasis! We all seem to enjoy cooking in the galley. It's always a good idea to have a few super easy options on the menu for those days you just don't feel like cooking. The watch schedule plays an important part in how you schedule your meals. But often times we keep meals aligned with watch changes. And it's important to establish a routine with food. It helps people get over the seasick hump. In general, its good to push good healthy meals pretty hard in the beginning. Not eating, doesn't help you adjust. When you lose your eating routine on land and just climb into a bunk, you're more prone to seasickness.Captains hour on board Quetzal. Your life on the boat should reach a state of happiness and well being thats equal to your life on land. It tends to relax people, and start to tell stories. It's an equalizer. Theres different levels of experience, and it's easy to feel intimidated. When everyone starts telling their own stories, Captains hour gives you time to tell your story. And having a glass of wine sometimes help that. And the goal is to help people find their groove. The time between point A and B is what it's all about. It's a very self regulating thing. You're generally so tired and trying to get yourself together, you don't abuse it. There's no peer pressure. And there's often plenty of club soda with lime! What we're talking about is food rituals. What do you keep aboard for the ritual? It's great tp keep treats on board - like fancy olives! If all else fails, we have olives. But Emily loves dessert, and her 9 year old loves em too! A treat offshore at the end of the day is a great ritual. John is always selling people on things like canned Octopus from Spain. But it was profoundly disappointing! Teresa like to sneak treats into Bens duffel bag and fills his water bottle with fizzy water! One day we decide to eat everything on the boat before we went shopping again. To help clear out the lockers. Newfoundland and Labrador is depressing how poorly and unhealthy they eat there. The vegetable selection is pretty much limited to potatoes. There's a lot you can do with a can of tomatoes or chickpeas toward the end of a passage. Creativity is important as the fresh food disappears. There was a french family with 40 cabbages in the bilge. How long can we go without shopping? Emily went 5 weeks without shopping. Kale and cabbages were lasting forever, and it became a competition with myself to see how long we could go.

1967 – A little boy leaned on his elbows in front of a black-and-white TV in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, unaware that Walt Disney was dead. How could he be dead? I was watching him on TV. Looking right into my eyes, Walt told me about his purchase of 43 square miles of Central Florida, an area twice the size of the island of Manhattan, and his plan to build there an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT.) He was standing in a Hollywood film studio in front of a floor-to-ceiling map of his Florida project when he said, “Welcome to a little bit of Florida here in California. This is where the early planning is taking place for our so-called Disney World Project. Now, the purpose of this film is to bring you up to date about some of the plans for Disney World.” A little later, he said, “The sketches and plans you will see today are simply a starting point, our first overall thinking about Disney World. Everything in this room may change time and time again as we move ahead, but the basic philosophy of what we're planning for Disney World is going to remain very much as it is right now…” That was the part I never forgot: Walt Disney knew his plan would evolve into something different than he imagined.Eighteen years ago Princess Pennie decided to buy some land and build a non-profit school for entrepreneurs, storytellers, and educators. We knew it would have a classroom tower with a library mezzanine and on-campus housing so that students wouldn't have to sleep in hotel rooms. Everything else was an afterthought. Chapel Dulcinea was chosen by 1,111 brides in 2017, making it the most popular wedding chapel on earth. A free wedding chapel wasn't part of the original plan, but if you've ever walked the campus at Wizard Academy, it's hard to imagine it not being there. A certification course for the training of whiskey sommeliers (storytellers) wasn't part of the original plan, either. Nor was The Crowded Barrel whiskey distillery.* And we could never have dreamed that Wizard Academy's YouTube channel, The Whiskey Vault, would become the #1 whiskey-review channel on earth. We couldn't have imagined it because streaming, online video did not exist in the year 2000. And now the Rocinante gym. A couple of years ago, Brian Clapp donated state-of-the art gym equipment but it never got used because it was housed in a part of the campus where students never go. The solution? Build a sleek, cantilevered gym covered in glittering silver metal with an 18-foot glass wall looking at Chapel Dulcinea, and put it next to the sidewalk between Spence Manor and Engelbrecht House. And of course we'll be starting The House of the Lost Boys – your third student mansion – as soon as the gym is complete, probably in about 60 days. But that's not the big news. No, not by a long shot.In late spring, 2019, the American Small Business Institute will be launching an important new certification course, The Ad Writer's Masters Class, a one-year online course – 26 modules, followed by 26 essay assignments – followed by a three-day, face-to-face working examination by a board of Master Ad Writers. This is a really big deal. And very expensive. (12k, minus alumni discount) When you finally pass your board exams – and you can try as often as you want – you will be certified and admitted into The Ad Writers Guild, with appropriate pomp and fanfare and physical glitteralia. Because after all, the American Small Business Institute is an extension of that wonderful dreamscape called Wizard Academy. Indy says you should visit him in the rabbit hole.
