Today on bonus edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are dropping a special episode in addition to this week's episode with Brendan Wayne. Our guest today is Ben Model who in addition to being a silent film accompanist, is also the archivist for the estates of Edie Adams and Ernie Kovacs. Our guest today is Maggie Hennefeld, McKnight Presidential Fellow and Associate Professor of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, who has co-curated a dvd set of the medium's early female comedians titled Cinema's First Nasty Women. Maggie talks us through the current resurgence in interest in silent cinema and the global landscape of festivals, supporters and restoration projects, as well as her own journey of scholarship in the field that led to her collaborating on this important project. All this interest seems long overdue considering the fantastically experimental and entertaining material, which is raucous, varied and vast, often making radical social commentary that still resonates today. Maggie vividly describes several highlights in this comprehensive collection, and the women who were behind and in front of the camera. In addition to assembling, restoring and annotating the films, the team also engaged over 45 mostly female composers to write and perform both traditional and avant-garde scores for each film, and she talks extensively about that process. We also discuss the erasure of this material from the silent film canon, and women from comedy (among many other fields) in general, and how these films both give us a new understanding of comedy in this era, even as they inform our on-going struggles with sexism and racism today, by showing us images of women that are simultaneously empowering and troubling. All films are contextualized with expert commentary, allowing them to be used in classrooms or otherwise as jumping-off points for deeper conversation. Finally, Maggie shares some thoughts from the book she's currently working on about the notion of “hysterical laughter” and its supposed danger to women. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Cinema's First Nasty WomenDVD Booklet InsertMaggie Hennefeld's other publications:Death from Laughter, Female Hysteria and Early CinemaSpecters of Slapstick and Silent Film ComediennesOther Curators of the set:Laura Horak – Girls Will Be BoysElif Rongen-Kaynakçi – EYE filmmuseumHenry Jenkins, What Made Pistachio Nuts?: Early Sound Comedy and the Vaudeville AestheticCharlotte GreenwoodFanny BriceLupe VélezWinnie LightnerAli WongSarah SilvermanWanda SykesJames Agee – “Comedy's Greatest Era”Charlie Chaplin in Mable's Strange PredicamentSilent Film CultureWomen and the Silent ScreenNitratevilleSilent LondonEdward Everett HortonSteve Massa and Ben Model – silent comedy Watch PartySilent Film FestivalsPordenone Film FestivalBologna Film FestivalSan Francisco Silent Film FestivalEl Festival Internacional de Cine Silente México Hippodrome film festivalTrump – “Nasty Women”Film ScholarsArigon StarrLiza BlackShelley Stamp Female Filmmakers, Producers, and ComediansAlice Guy-BlachéBertha RegustusDorothy ArznerFay TincherIda LupinoLéontineLois WeberMabel NormandMinnie Devereaux – “Fatty and Minnie He-Haw”Sarah DuhamelTexas GuinanSilent Film MusicDana Reason – ScoreDreamland FacesGonca Feride VarolGuenter BuchwaldJosé María Serralde RuizMeg MorleyNeil BrandSteven HorneTerri Lyne CarringtonNasty Women team on Nitrateville RadioOur previous Episode 30: The forgotten women of early filmmakingHistory of the Tom BoyNancy WalkerPeg Bracken – The I Hate to Housekeep Book / I Hate to Cook BookDaisiesThe UnknownArrest Warrant – Ukranian silent cinemaWhat's Up Doc?Undercrank Productions (silent film restoration)Online screenings from the Bologna and Pordenone film festivalsZiegfeld FolliesHal Roach StudiosShare your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you yet another first on this episode. We are talking to our first great-grandchild of a celebrity. We are talking today with Keaton Talmadge who is a the great-grandchild of comedy genius Buster Keaton as well as silent film star Natalie Talmadge. Whoa. We talk to Keaton about growing up in an era where most had no idea what Buster Keaton looked like – you will hear an example of that on the episode, as incomprehensible as it might sound. We also talk about the Brooklyn-born Talmadge sisters, of which her mother was one, who were incredibly famous in the silent film era. Sisters Constance and Norma were at one time named the top female film stars of 1921. We're talking big! So what did we talk about with Keaton? We talk about the century old legacy of Buster and how, still today, there are dedications and events in his name, all the time. We also talk to Keaton about her own career as a voice over actor, who has voiced roles in television, commercials, podcasts, video games and more for everyonre from Apple to Netflix to Nintendo and more. In fact, Keaton schools our host Josh Mills on everything from Looping to E-learning. We also talk about Keaton's time at Cal Arts, studying to become an actress, her years auditioning, how she started a Hula-Hoop company (you know, for kids) and how she landed at the perfect spot in her acting career, right now. It's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Today we bring you a first on the Rarified Heir Podcast, a bonus episode in tribute to Gilbert Gottfried and the Gilbert Gottfried Amazing Colossal Podcast. Our guest today is not a child of a celebrity but Ben Model is the archivist to the Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams archive which is run by our host Josh Mills. In 2019, Ben and Josh were guests on the Gilbert Gottfried Amazing Colossal Podcast to celebrate the Centennial of Ernie Kovacs. Truly shocked and saddened by Gilbert's passing last week, Ben and Josh wanted to share some stories about how terrific their time was on the Gilbert Gottfried Amazing Colossal Podcast and how warm, funny and truly insane Gilbert and co-host Frank Santopadre were n he best possible ways. Clearly not celebrities, Frank took a chance on having Ben and Josh on as guests because he knew Kovacs was an important comedy figure and perhaps they should take a chance to talk about Kovacs to listeners who maybe knew about him but perhaps not enough. Somehow by taking that chance, the episode in question became an odd mix of silent film accompaniment, risqué stories about Josh's mom that Gilbert loved and by both accounts, a moment that happens all too rare in life – a genuine connection. Basically, this bonus episode is a tribute to Gilbert Gottfried and also a huge thank you to Frank Santopadre & unofficial podcast booker Gino Salamone for taking a chance on two nobodies who just thought it would be a fun idea. We miss you Gilbert. We are sorry there wont be a second chance to connect but we know you are cursing out Walter Brennan in heaven and that makes us smile. We'll miss you Gil.

Post WW1, F.W. Murnau directs this German-Danish co-production, showcasing some of his best intentions toward future films. Der Gang in die Nacht (Journey into the Night) is derived from a screenplay by the Danish scenarist Harriet Bloch. It’s an example of the “nobility film,” a genre cultivated by the Nordisk studio where Bloch worked. In these stories, an upper-class man becomes obsessed with a working-class woman, and she leads him to disaster. In Murnau’s film, the well-to-do protagonist is Dr. Eigil Börne. Uneasy with his courtship of his wispy fiancée Helene, he plunges into an affair with the dancer Lily. They move to a seaside cottage, where their idyll is interrupted by the spectral figure of a blind artist (Conrad Veidt). After Dr. Börne restores the Painter’s sight, Lily falls in love with him and leaves Börne. Unhappiness ensues for all, and yes, suicide is involved. Be sure to join KANOPY if you currently have not. That would change once big money got involved, and some would be pushed aside and forgotten about. Ernie Kovacs was a pioneering force in early television and helped lay the foundations of what would later become Late Night Comedy. Ben Model is a renowned silent film accompanist and as an archivist has help preserve and restore lost and damaged films. He's also one of the leading voices who helped the Library of Congress acquire the massive back catalogue of Kovacs films in 2015, and helped curate the impressive 9-disc ERNIE KOVACS: CENTENNIAL EDITION for Shout! Factory, available now. For those who know NOTHING about Kovacs, Ben breaks down the great bits and game-changers that may still impress all these years later. Special thanks to Josh Mills for helping arrange this conversation, and you can get more silent films from Ben through his Undercrank Productions film label at silentfilmmusic.com. Silent films were never truly silent: vaudeville acts, narrators, and of course, musical accompanists filled the air with sounds. Ben Model continues that tradition by performing musical accompaniments to both canonical and rare silent films throughout the nation, as well as curating and preserving films himself. Ben takes Peter through his strange path to the unique position, including his "Three Godfathers" who influenced him, and then explains the nuts and bolts of how to actually create music for a film with none at all. They discuss his techniques he learned from improvisation, the task of collecting and searching out rare and missing works, and the pains and pleasures of the analog to digital switch. Finally, Ben explains to Peter some of the hidden secrets behind Charlie Chaplin's masterwork Modern Times, including how under-cranking the film is the trick to star's balletic work. 0:00-1:02 Opening2:07 -6:56 Establishing Shots - Delmer Daves / Trivia Round / Donations7:44-1:08:45 Deep Focus - Ben Model1:09:54-1:30:33 Double Exposure - Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin)1:30:35-1:32:34 Close / Outtake
