Strap on your goggles and hoist the sails, this week on Born to Watch, the crew dives into a post-apocalyptic puddle with their Waterworld (1995) Review, Kevin Costner's legendary aquatic epic that soaked Universal Studios in ambition, cash, and controversy. Whitey, G Man, and Damo reunite to wade through the waves of cinematic history, revisiting a film as infamous for its behind-the-scenes chaos as it is for its soggy storytelling. From the jump, the team questions Waterworld's place in pop culture infamy. Once touted as the most expensive movie ever made, this maritime Mad Max-on-water starred Costner at the peak of his fame, but was it his creative apex or the beginning of his soggy descent? The guys don't pull punches, balancing deep dives into production lore with their trademark irreverent humour.Whitey sets the tone by confronting the bloated ambition of the project: “Has any Hollywood star become so famous with a catalogue with so many peaks and troughs?” Cue a wide-ranging Costner retrospective, comparing the golden days of Field of Dreams and The Untouchables to the indulgent excesses of The Postman and yes, Waterworld. The verdict? Costner might've been drinking his own Kool-Aid, filtered through a urine distillation machine, of course.G Man leads the crew through the absurd plot, where the Earth is drowned, the polar caps are melted, and dry land is a mythic memory. Costner plays the Mariner, a grim, gilled loner with webbed feet and a personality drier than the lost continent he's searching for. The podcast doesn't shy away from the film's narrative flaws: characters with no backstory, Mad Max rip-offs, and a complete lack of chemistry between the leads, most notably between Costner and Jeannie Triplehorn, affectionately known as “Jeannie Triple Blurter” by the team.Speaking of performances, Dennis Hopper's turn as the Deacon is eviscerated with delight. Compared to his electric villain in Speed just a year prior, Hopper here is an oily cartoon, piloting a rust-bucket Exxon Valdez filled with chain-smoking goons. “It's a bad Beyond Thunderdome,” declares Whitey, and the panel doesn't disagree. The gang revels in the film's infamous production disasters: hurricanes, a constantly rewritten script, Costner's massive creative control, and his falling out with director Kevin Reynolds. G Man reminds us of the legendary quote about Costner directing himself: “Now he gets to work with his favourite actor and his favourite director.” Ouch.Despite the floundering script, there are moments that the Born to Watch crew appreciates. The practical effects, like the massive floating Atoll set and Costner's tricked-out trimaran, get nods of approval, even if the action sequences are undercut by choppy editing and goofy stunts. And the team can't help but laugh at the iconic “pee filtration scene,” the rope-assisted bungee jump climax, and the infamous underwater city reveal, which defies all logic and basic physics. One of the episode's standout sections is “Question Time,” where the trio tackles the film's most baffling plot points: How does the Mariner's boat outrun jet skis? How does dry land remain uninhabited? And why, oh why, would someone spend their life searching for paradise only to leave it five minutes after finding it?The boys also pay tribute to the lesser-known cast and crew: a young Jack Black in a blink-and-miss-it role, Tina Majorino (aka the Enola of Napoleon Dynamite fame), and the brilliant yet misfiring score from James Newton Howard. “He dialled it in harder than Dennis Hopper did,” quips Damo.By the end, the Born to Watch gang reaches a consensus: Waterworld is a cinematic curiosity, too ambitious to dismiss outright, too flawed to celebrate, and just insane enough to warrant a watch. Maybe once.So whether you're a fan of ‘90s action epics or just here to marvel at cinematic misfires, this Waterworld deep dive is a splash of nostalgic chaos you won't want to miss.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Waterworld an underrated cult classic or a floating disaster?Would you survive in a world covered by the ocean? And seriously, how does that boat outrun jet skis?#BornToWatch #Waterworld #KevinCostner #MoviePodcast #90sMovies #PostApocalyptic #DennisHopper #JeanneTripplehorn #CultClassic #MadMaxOnWater #MovieReview #PodcastLife

We'll all learn a new word today as we discuss the atoll (pronounced "at-uhl" apparently?) that is Palmyra. Much like ghosts, it's not the things that you see her that are the most spooky, but the things that you can't. How can an island with no history of indigenous life have a haunted history, you ask? Well, as always, we're gonna tell ya. Check out our affiliates: Javvycoffee.com Use code ORSO77605 to get 15% off every order. Venomscent.com Use code ORSO28248 to get 10% off every order. Atoll islands are made from sediment produced by corals, clams, snails, and varieties of algae that secrete carbonate. Under the right conditions, over time, fragments of coral skeletons, shells, and other sediments made by marine life are piled up by waves. Eventually, islands are formed – some large and some small. Atoll islands are home […]
In the heart of the Pacific in the late 19th century, an expedition planned by Frederick and Elizabeth Walker, turned into a nightmare. In the dead of night, their ship, The Wandering Minstrel, struck the jagged reefs of Midway Atoll, splintering beneath their feet. With no way to escape, they were stranded on a barren, wind-lashed island, surrounded by endless water and lurking predators. Days stretched into weeks and then months, as hunger, fear, and desperation set in. Worse, it appeared they shared the island with an unknown character, whose previous shipping career had almost certainly ended in murder. From Russia with Love eben.

"The Zohr discovery is an interesting one because all of a sudden it makes everybody sort of scratch their head and go like, 'So what have we missed elsewhere?'" Dr. Walter Rietveld discusses September's The Leading Edge, which focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean. In this episode: > Discover the challenges and opportunities in the Eastern Mediterranean's oil and gas exploration, a region attracting significant industry interest due to recent discoveries and proximity to major markets. > Explore the complexities of the Messenian interval, a geographically variable layer that creates significant hurdles for seismic imaging. > Learn how innovative technologies like multi-azimuth seismic and ocean bottom node (OBN) acquisition and advanced processing techniques like full waveform inversion (FWI) are being used to overcome these imaging challenges. > Examine the success story of the Atoll field, where OBN acquisition and advanced imaging led to significant improvements in seismic data quality, enabling better reservoir characterization and well planning. > Understand the shift in exploration focus from post-Messenian to deeper pre-Messenian plays, driven by factors like the depletion of shallower targets and the potential of deeper channel systems as reservoirs. This interview focuses on the challenges and technological advancements in Eastern Mediterranean oil and gas exploration. Walter discusses how innovations such as multi-azimuth seismic, ocean bottom node acquisition, and full waveform inversion improve subsurface imaging, particularly in geologically complex areas like the Messenian interval. He highlights the success of these technologies in the Atoll field. He suggests that similar techniques, successfully employed in other regions like the Gulf of Mexico, hold promise for maximizing the value of existing data in the Eastern Mediterranean. Walter encourages listeners to explore the special section on the Eastern Mediterranean in The Leading Edge to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and solutions discussed. He closes the conversation, emphasizing the importance of collaboration within the industry, even among competitors, for advancing exploration efforts. On this episode of WAYPOINTS, Alec is joined by host Jim Klug to explore the intricacies of fly fishing at St. Brandon's Atoll, one of the most remote trips Yellow Dog offers. In May 2024, Yellow Dog's Alec Gerbec had the opportunity to visit St. Brandon's Atoll, located 268 nautical miles north of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The trip spanned from May 7 to 17, 2024, featuring seven full days of flats fishing, with additional days allocated for travel between Mauritius and the Atoll. The week was a tremendous success, with the group landing a total of 272 bonefish and 5 permit. Going on holiday to Bora Bora is on many people's bucket list. However, one teacher from New Zealand was not satisfied with a holiday alone. He swam once around the exclusive atoll and broke a world record in the process.

Located in the Pacific Ocean, French Polynesia is made up of over 100 islands, some of which are comprised of ring-shaped coral reefs called atolls. These are particularly susceptible to climate change. The idyllic atoll of Hao, also known as the "harp island" for its bow-like shape, is threatened daily by rising sea levels. Residents face a tough decision: continue to weather the ravages of rising tides, or relocate and become climate refugees. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's Lauren Bain.

Enter a life of Magellan-style wisdom, Moroccan pirates, machetes, and marriages held hostage to the sea. Nightmares come alive as Buck and Stephanie take nearly a month to reach their deserted island - a trip that should have taken a week. Plus, once they get there it ain't so deserted. Besides way too many sharks and poisonous fish, it turns out there are quite the handful of people as well. We meet “The Mayor” and Mac-n-Muff. Sleep tight, don't let the big dog bite. The CURRENT is a low-key, light-hearted fly fishing podcast brought to you by Trouts Fly Fishing. We're excited to kick off the 2023 season of The CURRENT Podcast, which is now hosted by Rick Mikesell & Ivan Orsic. In this season, Rick and Ivan are welcoming a host of new and old friends to talk about all things fly fishing. From tips & tricks to deep dives on a wide variety of fisheries, we're excited to take a deeper dive into the world of fly fishing, both on the Front Range of Colorado and beyond. In this episode, host Rick Mikesell and co-host Ivan Orsic are joined by everyone's favorite traveling angler - the one and only Brian O'Keefe. Brian describes himself as the "most lucky man in the world" as he's spent the better part of the last 50 years traveling the world in search of fish, adventure, and the perfect fly fishing photo. Brian, Rick, and Ivan start with Brian's origin story as a youth with a fly rod and Instamatic camera in hand. After a brief review of his inception as a fly fishing bum with camera, the gang moves on to some all-time stories about Brian's time spent adventuring the world in search of any species that swims. On his website, Brian notes a short list of destinations - Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Mexico - Yucatan and Baja, Cuba, Bahamas, Belize, Chile, Argentina, Christmas Island, Bikini Atoll, Tonga, New Zealand, Sierra Leone, and St. Brandon's Atoll - emphasis on the short. Brian has fished more water than you can shake a stick at and has the stories to prove it. We wrapped up the conversation by discussing his pivotal role in Catch Magazine and finally, Brian shared some of his favorite fly fishing photography tips and tricks. Sit back, grab your beverage of choice, and enjoy an hour and change with the legend himself - Brian O'Keefe.
