EPISODE 59 DETAILS Bovine Tuberculosis Discovered In South Dakota & USDA Dietary Guidelines Tuberculosis Found In South Dakota Cattle Herd Bovine tuberculosis (TB) has been confirmed in South Dakota for the first time since 2021. According to State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson, the infected steer was initially identified in late October by meat inspectors during routine inspection at a Wisconsin packing plant. Records linked the steer to a Hamlin County feedlot which had marketed the animal. The State Veterinarian's office is working closely with the feedlot owner as well as other producers who may have sold animals purchased by the feedlot, USDA officials, and area veterinarians to locate the steer's source herd. Necessary precautions are being taken to protect the health of South Dakota's cattle industry. Bovine TB is not currently a threat to food safety in the United States, thanks to milk pasteurization and comprehensive meat inspection programs. Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic, slowly progressive respiratory disease of cattle. Infected animals may transmit infection to other animals when in close proximity for prolonged periods. Cattle rarely exhibit visible signs of illness. The US has nearly eliminated bovine TB due to a cooperative eradication campaign and South Dakota has officially been recognized as free of the disease since 1982. Criticisms To The New Scientific Report On USDA Dietary Guidelines The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is providing access to a new Scientific Report that will assist two government agencies to develop the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030, which is expected to be published late next year. Several cattle organizations including The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) quickly responded to the report's recommendation that nutrition guidelines incorporate reduced consumption of red meat. NCBA President Mark Eisele said in a statement that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee ignored robust and rigorous scientific evidence about beef's essential nutrients and the foundational, positive role it plays in health as a preferred protein food in a variety of healthy diets for all Americans. The committee is offering the Scientific Report online and offers its “independent, evidence-based findings and advice” for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the USDA. The report, along with public comments and federal agency input, will inform the departments as they prepare the final document for publication. The Committee says it is focused on health equity to ensure that factors like socioeconomic position, race, ethnicity and culture are considered to the greatest extent possible when it comes to establishing the most effective report for all Americans. HHS and USDA plan to launch a 60-day public comment period and are encouraging the public to provide written comments on the committee's Scientific Report, the agencies said in the announcement referencing the online document, which is available HERE. Medicine - Brad Laner - in conversation with David Eastaugh Medicine was formed by ex-Savage Republic drummer Brad Laner, based on some 4-track recordings Laner was working on in 1990. After playing the tapes for music industry representatives, he was told that if he formed a band that sounded like the tapes, he could get a record deal. Laner then assembled a band of musicians from the Los Angeles music scene. Medicine's early lineup included Laner, drummer Jim Goodall (Severed Head in a Bag, Jon Wayne, Lopez Beatles), guitarist Jim Putnam, bassist Eddie Ruscha and singer Annette Zilinskas (an original member of the Bangles). Zilinskas left before any official releases and was replaced by former Fourwaycross singer Beth Thompson.

Beth Thompson, Associate Director, Policy, Wellcome, Speaking to SciDev.Net ahead of the launch of the Wellcome Global Monitor for 2020, which delves into the impact of COVID-19 on livelihoods, and people's views on science.
Scientists were delighted earlier this year to find they would still have access to the EU Horizon 2020 funding and collaborations. Now, it has been revealed that membership of this group, which was previously paid for through fees to the European Union, may come directly from the science budget, at a cost of about £15 billion over the next 7 years. That’s £1-2 billion a year. Marnie Chesterton speaks with Beth Thompson, head of policy at the Wellcome Trust about the implications, and Roland Pease asks scientists working around the world how the previously announced ODA cuts are affecting their work. Native oysters help to filter coastal waters of the UK of pollutants including nitrates, while also providing habitat for other species. But their numbers have declined by 95% throughout their British range. Now, the Zoological Society of London is placing thousands of mature oysters under pontoons in marinas across the UK to let them breed, and encourage the return of the species to their former numbers. And the new coronavirus mutations that are worrying us all have been found to affect mice in experimental studies at the Pasteur Institute in France. Marnie asks if this change to the infectivity of the new variants has implications for human health and our ability to combat the virus. Presented by Marnie Chesterton Produced by Rory Galloway

In the new EU-UK deal, the UK is to be an associate member of the latest EU research funding round, known as Horizon Europe. costing around £2bn to take part, what can UK scientists now do and what has changed? UKRI CEO Otteline Leyser and the Wellcome Trust EU specialist Beth Thompson discuss ways in which UK researchers are breathing a sigh of relief. Of all the things the UK can now diverge from the EU, DEFRA is currently holding an open consultation on whether to tweak the current GMO regulations so as not to include CRISPR style Genetic Editing. The EU is coincidentally looking at the same issue. John Innes Centre's Janneke Balk works on making strains of wheat that have a higher level of iron for nutrituiional fortification. Interim head of the Roslin Institute in Scotland Bruce Whitelaw thinks developing disease resistance in farm animals is potentially profitable area. Both agree the GMO regulations should be more tightly specified to bring clarity and opportunity for innovation. In Iceland, Kari Stefansson's company Decode Genetics analyse the genetic codes of most of the population of Iceland. This has allowed them to look at the parents, siblings, and offspring of identical twins, and identify how early genetic differences between them develop. And it's very early indeed. Given that identical twins studies are so often used to address issues surrounding the so-called Nature-vs Nurture debate, the findings, published in the Journal Nature, are striking. Presenter by Marnie Chesterton Produced by Alex Mansfield Made in association with the Open University.

Second in our series on Women in Ministry, we dialogue today with a friend and former co-worker, Rev. Beth Thompson. Beth spent almost 40 years in ministry and was graduating from seminary at the height of the "women in ministry" conflict. She discusses the atmosphere during that time period and describes what helped her stay the course when things were difficult. And if you know Beth, she drops the mic on the regular and hits the truth hard, and this conversation definitely does not disappoint! Amy had the pleasure of working with Beth for almost 15 years, and she can say without a doubt that Beth's mentorship and modeling of what it is like to be a woman in church ministry was invaluable for her as she began full time ministry. Beth's example in ministry has impacted countless people and churches, and we are honored to interview her today.

Xylitol is one of the things I talk about with anyone who will listen! It has so many uses and misconceptions. People question the name and often confuse it with artificial sweeteners so they disregard it. But it isn’t a chemical artificial sweetener at all, it is a sugar that is found in birch trees and corn cobs...it also happens to be something that our body creates naturally, and supplementing with it in the mouth helps stop cavities SIGNIFICANTLY! The magic of xylitol is best realized when you understand WHY it works, and to best explain that I brought in Shirley Gutkowski. Shirley has been at the forefront of mouth transformations with xylitol, and she gets to the point instead of wasting your time with fluff! Whether you are a consumer looking for better outcomes at home or a dental provider, this episode is packed full of gems, and shouldn’t be missed! Have a listen and enjoy, and thanks Shirley! Links to products discussed: Ivoclar Chlorhexidine Varnish Find Shirley at: Primal Air: primal air Email: crosslinkpresent@aol.com If you’re looking for the low down on strep bacteria, here it is: The bacteria streptococcus mutans is the one of the most significant bacteria in creating a cavity. Its purpose is to mainly pump out a sticky film that allows other bacteria to enter and create bigger problems (listen to the podcast for a detained breakdown). Not only is strep responsible for cavities and gum disease, but throat, ear and sinus infections as well. Xylitol works directly on the strep bacteria – starving it and not allowing it to create the sticky film. Without the sticky film, the cavities cannot happen. Thanks Shirley for all your knowledge and insights, we value you so much! Shirley’s Bio: Shirley is an envelope pusher and clinical agitator. After nearly 20 years of chairside dental hygiene practice in SSC, small group and large group practice she retired her scalers and became a full-time writer and speaker. Her topic in the past: caries management beyond floss and fluoride introducing practitioners to xylitol and biofilm management. Today her passion is reignited with the study of orofacial myofunctional therapy and its role in absolute health. She owns and operates Primal Air OMT and Breathing Retraining. By spotting the earliest signs of orofacial myofunctional disorders she coaches parents in simple exercises for their child (close their mouth) to providing full service myofunctional techniques to widen the palate offering space for the tongue to maintain the arch space and improve sinus volume. Nothing works without air. CAREERfusion is a collaborative effort she works on with her mentor Beth Thompson. CAREERfusion brings together opportunities for corporate partners and clinicians. Motivates everyone to be their best and puts them into an environment that stimulates positive actions for each person. It also is extremely self-directed so everyone leaves with something different, different goals, different paths to explore and individualized ways to achieve their desires. According to a recent Washington Post Article, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Montgomery County, Maryland, chose to adopt a gender-neutral homecoming court this year. Students in each grade voted for two classmates from a ballot of finalists, with the top vote-getters crowned at the school’s homecoming football game (October 7th). “It provides an opportunity for all students to be involved in something that was exclusionary,” said Jacob Rains, president of the schoolwide Student Government Association. “It is really not our job, especially with a gender-neutral and transgender population at B-CC, to tell people that boys have to be kings and girls have to be queens. Who are we to put people into those categories?” At Madison West High School in Wisconsin, students from its gay-straight alliance launched a petition urging the change, and more than 1,000 students and staff members signed on, said Beth Thompson, the principal. Knowing the national controversy surrounding this topic, Butterfly Evolution wants to know where you stand on this issue as a student/child? Parent/Adult? Educator? Administrator? Politician? Community Leader? How do you feel about this idea versus the traditional practice of a male king and a female queen? Join us tonight for another thought-provoking conversation. I spoke with Leah Beckham and Beth Thompson, the CEO and Director of Business Development, respectively, for BillBLAST, a cloud-based application that helps law firms manage their e-billing and related reporting. Beckham discussed how her tenure as COO for McAngus, Goudelock & Courie for 15 years helped shape her view on law firm efficiency and her mission to help law firms manage the ever-growing client demand for e-billing. With over two decades in legal technology, Thompson echoed that view of streamlining complex and labor-intensive tasks while accelerating the payment cycle with user-friendly dashboards and metrics that enhance business intelligence.
