"About 10 miles south of Tupelo on the Natchez Trace Parkway is an exhibit called the BLACK BELT OVERLOOK. "In a much earlier age all this area lay under a part of the ocean, which extended up across much of the state of Alabama, entering what is now Mississippi from the east near Columbus. From there an arm of the ocean reached through here north up into Tennessee. The ocean's marine life, shells and such, formed deposits of limestone that built up to be the land here. Over the ages the weathered limestone has become the black fertile soil of this area known as the Black Belt or Black Prairie, and it's also known as the Tombigbee Prairie. This area is one of Mississippi's two richest growing areas and was once one of the nation's great cotton belts. Now it is mostly pasture land. "The other major agricultural spot in Mississippi lies farther to the west but still it's in the northern part of the State. That area is the delta of the Mississippi River, which is on the other side of the state from here. The Delta lies between a belt of Loess soil and the Mississippi River, on a section of the river just South of Memphis, Tennessee, on down as far as Vicksburg. "Join us next time when we will visit the TUPELO NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD. I'm Frank Thomas, you guide along the Natchez Trace, a road through the wilderness." This week on the show we dive into Black on the Prairies, a CBC interactive series that explores the past, present and future of Black Prairie life through migration, work, culture and community. CBC Edmonton reporter Thandiwe Konguavi joins us to talk about her contribution to the project, as well as explore a racist attack in Edmonton that shows how important this work is. We also hear the voices of Black people from the Prairies talking about belonging and what community means. And CBC reporter Tahirih Foroozan shares the story of two young Black men bonding over the shared experience of small town Alberta life.
Pete and Matt are joined by fan favorite (probably) guest Mason Redmon to talk about The Decemberists two Christmas songs, Decemberists side project Black Prairie, Canadian Sitcoms, Canadian crooners that hate Jesus, Alan Jackson, Creed, Die Hard, and, of course, 9/11. This is a wild one folks, truly a magical Christmas Journey. Happy Holidays! See you in 2021!
Our guest for this episode is the multi-instrumentalist member of The Decemberists, Chris Funk. Raised in Alaska by orchestra teachers, Annalisa Tornfelt is a fiddler, guitar player, singer-songwriter and teacher living in Portland, OR. She’s recorded with the Portland Cello Project, spent years touring in Black Prairie and her bluegrass band Bearfoot, and has collaborated with countless NW musicians. She is also a mother to Darian, age 17, and Rose, age 1. In this episode we discuss teenage motherhood, being raised in a religious household, touring with babies, having children 17 years apart and the complexities of identity and ambition. I spoke to Annalisa in August of 2017 in my home office in Portland, OR.

Umíte si představit americko-český akustický potlach v režii Mr.Bemana, kde se potká Bob Wayne s Vojtou “Kliďákem“ Tomáškem? Kromě těchto dvou pánů nám k táboráku usedl, mimo jiné, Luscious Jackson, aby spolu s Bobem zavzpomínali na dovolenou v Mexiku, Appalachian Cobra Worshipers si střihnou coververzi Nicka Cavea, zazáří jako vždy úžasní Greensky Bluegrass a oba póly barevného spektra nám představí White Buffalo a Black Prairie.
Annalisa Tornfelt is a songwriter and musician originally from Alaska and now based in Portland, OR. She is known for being the singer and fiddle player for Black Prairie (with members of The Decemberists). Her 2015 solo release, The Number 8, was recorded during the month of August, on an 8-track recorder, in the span of eight hours. She often performs with her musical siblings as Annalisa Tornfelt and the Tornfelt Sisters. www.annalisatornfelt.com
JOHN NEMETH was born in Idaho to Hungarian immigrants, and honed his harmonica chops while working as a truck driver, jamming along to Junior Wells in his cab. It all culminated in a move to Memphis last year. Being in the epicenter for soul and blue shaped his new album Memphis Grease. Its slathered with fatback soul and blues done the Memphis way: tight horn lines, whirling organ with Johns soaring voice and wicked harp playing front and center. John won 2014 Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Male Artist of the year and has just been nominated for six 2015 Blues Music Awards. KRISTIN ANDREASSEN is an award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist that has traveled the world with string-band sensation Uncle Earl and set hearts to flutter as one third of the folk-noir trio Sometymes Why. Along the way, she's performed and recorded alongside such maverick talents as John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dirk Powell (Joan Baez, Cold Mountain), Sufjan Stevens, Aoife O'Donovan, Black Prairie and New York anti-folk icon Jeffrey Lewis. She won a Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Crayola Doesn't Make a Color for Your Eyes. Andreassens new release, Gondolier, represents a new direction and focus, including the first time shell be touring behind a solo release. It draws upon those varied musical experiences in service of her captivating gifts as a songwriter and vocalist. WoodSongs Kid: Carson Diersing is 17 year-old harmonica wiz from Fountain Town, Indiana. At 13, he became the youngest harmonica player in history to be endorsed by Hohner Harmonicas. He also won the 2012 Honeyboy Edwards Fund for the Blues at The National Blues Museum.
This week we tackle the big subjects: the future of the Portland Building, the humor (or lack thereof) of rape jokes, the history of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival & more. Join us!The Future Of Portland's Most Loved/Hated BuildingThis week the Portland City Council will consider legislation to start renovating one of the city’s most recognizable works of architecture: The Portland Building. It's both Portland's most famous building (it's the text book case for postmodern architect) and perhaps its most reviled. First up, we take a look at what's wrong with the building. Hint: the problems run deeper than a color scheme that feels drawn from your grandma's kitchen. Then we listen to an excerpt of the building's architect, Michael Graves, before hearing the case for remodeling the building smartly from Randy Gragg, the director of the University of Oregon's John Yeon Center for Architecture and the Landscape.Adrienne Truscott's "Asking For It"There’s been a lot of talk in the comedy world over the last several years about rape jokes: are they funny, or seriously unfunny? Now there’s a show that tackles the issue head-on. The politically-minded theater presenters Boom Arts are bringing performer Adrienne Truscott to town for a show the New York Times called “as upsetting as it is hilarious." Truscott sports a blonde wig, jean jacket, and little else. Literally, she’s naked from the waist down. The show’s called “Adrienne Truscott’s Asking For It" (actually, the name’s quite a bit longer, but we’ll let Truscott explain it to producer Aaron Scott), and it runs through Oct. 24 at the Headwaters Theater.opbmusic Session: Alela Diane and Ryan FrancesconiMusicians Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi didn’t set out to make an album, but they did. It’s called “Cold Moon,” and it came out Oct. 23. You can see videos of their opbmusic Session here, or catch them live at Revolution Hall on Oct. 17.Oregon Experience: The Oregon Shakespeare FestivalOregon Experience opens its season on Monday with a special about one of the brightest jewels in Oregon’s arts crown: the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Sure, you might know that it's the biggest regional theater in the country with the biggest resident acting company. Sure, you know that it attracts folks from around the world. But did you know it has a mammoth costume warehouse for rentals to everyone from Justin Timberlake on "Saturday Night Live" to Al Pacino in "Richard III."Disjecta Brings On The NoiseChiara Giovando, the new curator-in-residence at the north Portland contemporary art center Disjecta, gives us a tour of her first show, "The Book Of Scores." It's all about sound art. Oregon Art Beat: Artist Greg RobinsonThis weekend the Portland Art Museum opens a brand new Center for Contemporary Native Arts with an exhibition featuring the work of three Oregon Native artists. One of those artists is Greg Robinson, who taught himself to produce pieces in the traditional style of his tribe, the Chinook. If you have a picture in your mind right now of what his pieces look like, think again. Chinook art isn’t anything like the popular stereotypes of Pacific Northwest native art. The music for today came from the local band Black Prairie’s album “Wild Ones,” who did the album in tandem with a book by Jon Mooallem about the strange and wonderful relationship between humans and animals. Mooallem will be one of several public radio personalities sharing stories at the singular Pop-up Magazine on Oct. 20 at the Aladdin Theater. It’s a touring show that’s like watching a magazine get performed live, with journalists and writers doing everything from reading short humorous essays to telling feature length stories with documentary footage and photographs.

When he was 25, musician Chris Funk left the Midwest for Portland, Oregon. Why? “I knew John Fahey lived in Oregon, and that was a big draw for me. And I knew Bill Frisell lived here [in Seattle]. They're two of my idols.” As he tells us in this podcast, shortly after relocating to Oregon, he'd meet Colin Meloy and, soon thereafter, become a core member of the Decemberists. In 2007, Funk and the Decemberists' Nate Query, Jenny Conlee and John Moen decided to form their own bluegrass-inspired offshoot band, Black Prairie. Black Prairie recently released their third studio record, Fortune (Sugar Hill). read more

New York Times contributor Jon Mooallem says our efforts to save endangered species depend in large part on the tales we tell about them. Jon traces the history of wildlife in the American imagination and offers his own stories of three imperiled species (bear, butterfly and bird) and the people who defend them in his new book "Wild Ones: A Sometimes Dismaying, Weirdly Reassuring Story About Looking at People Looking at Animals in America." Among the many topics we discussed: Tom Jefferson and the woolly mammoth, Teddy Bear vs. Billy Possum, conservationists and nature fakers, teaching whooping cranes to migrate, and fighting for beauty. Also, music from Black Prairie's new album "Wild Ones," inspired by Jon's book.
The Decemberists' side project perform their song Do You Believe? for the first time in concert. It was part of "The Storm In The Barn," a project commissioned by the Oregon Children's Theater.
Portland's Black Prairie performed in our studios a few months ago for our High Fidelity members. This song came midway in the set and features beautiful harmony vocals and a nice use of the zither.
This week on the podcast we bring you another song from our Black Prairie concert. This time the rootsy, homespun side project of The Decemberists perform their original tune, "Rock of Ages."
Members of Black Prairie may be more well-known for their work with other projects (The Decemberist, Portlandia), but they certainly seem most comfortable playing the rootsy, homespun tunes of their side project.
