If you've seen live music in Portland over the last couple of decades there's a decent chance you've seen Jenny Conlee on the accordion or keyboard. She may be best known for her work with The Decemberists, with whom she's played for the last 23 years. She has also played with Casey Neill and the Norway Rats, Jerry Joseph, Little Sue, The Minus Five, Stephanie Schneidermanor Ashley Flynn. Conlee has a new solo album out called “Tides: Pieces for Accordion and Piano.” Some of the original songs were inspired by her time on the southern Washington coast. Conlee joins us in the studio to tell us more about “Tides” and play a few songs on accordion.

Finding the right people for your ground level startup is really hard! As every startup founder can attest, there is just no playbook to getting the right people to join your team. It is about just getting anyone with the right skills to join the team. Often resulting in an unsuccessful endeavor. So what's missing? …. Positioning & expectations alignment. Positioning is rooted in what the person you are considering, really DESIRES their professional growth. Are they a builder? A Improver? Or a maintainer? Expectation alignment is how well the person aligns with your company values and what your expectations are for performance: Step 1. Document your values and share them with each person. Allow them to lean in or bow out. Step 2. Document how both parties view the responsibilities & performance standards. Step 3. Then come to an agreement on how to keep each other accountable. Our guest today: Craig Conlee, Executive Advisor & Former Founder & CEO of Zealr Craig Conlee has over 25 years of selling enterprise software for giants like IBM and HP with over $110M in total software sales. In 2015, Craig decided to startup a ML/AI B2B SaaS company to solve a problem he faced as a sales person. Craig graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a major in Political Science. As a student athlete, Craig is still the shortest rower in the 150 year history of CAL Crew. Craig Conlee grew up in Newport Beach, CA where he met his wife. Currently, he is living in Orange County with his family. Today we discuss: Why alignment is so critical when hiring How to align with people so they lean in to your opportunity Challenge today? Getting people that understand the work involved with a startup Around location, mindset Maybe a social thing? A lot of people want to join a startup but want to be paid Don't understand equity Right mindset, Easy to check out Your not paying them Let people join the team that don't fit the values All equity based Guilt for asking them to do work because you are asking a lot Why is this important to the company? Gravitate toward people who understand A lot of education of the reality You have to be very upfront as to where you are in the stage of my startup. Which allowed me to clearly understand if they want to join or not. How do we solve the problem? Process in which you get to know people better Repeatable & consistent way of interviewing Every conversation was different The good hires were just “lucky” Remove the luck from hiring Worst gambler, yet a startup founder Understanding what they want and what to expect What they want Avoid Leading the witness Selling rather than listening *** Expectations High risk of not succeeding Equity as compensation People getting offended by perceived value Want a mix of cash & equity Hire slow, fire really fast. Have knowledge base centralized for quick transition Don't let yourself be held hostage Avoid paying salary & equity balance- if they leave you have to start all over again Balance keeping them from leaving Conflict of interest in terms of valuation Equity only If it doesn't work out, it wasn't meant to be Key Takeaways that the Audience can plug into their business today! - Value: Have a sound, repeatable process of interview hiring Hire slow, fire really fast. If you're not changing, not trying to look into the future, you're not moving forward. When Josh Conlee became the CEO of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, he and his team looked at a variety of things: how they were doing, where the market was going, what they did well, and what they didn't do very well. I hope you'll listen in to our conversation. “We are a proud community and we wanted to show people that we were moving forward in many ways.” ~Josh Conlee Josh Conlee earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Business Administration from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Additionally, he earned a Master of Health Services Administration from the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock, Arkansas. Welcome to 2021 everyone, and thank you so much for bringing us along with you. We may have hoped and prayed that this year would be a more relaxed time for us all, but so far it's coming on strong like the twice divorced retired DJ at your local bar. We are only 8 days into this bad-boy and things are still turned up to 11.A wild group of protesters turned rioters took over Capitol Hill on Wednesday and stormed the halls of Congress. The President seemingly pushed them towards it on a crusade to "save our democracy". Now, it doesn't matter whether or not you agree with them, what does matter is they did it and seem like they may be willing to do it again. There is still almost two weeks before the inauguration and who knows what could possibly go down. We've been wanting to have our friend Conlee on the show to talk about the certification of the electoral ballots for a while now, but that was all completely overshadowed by the events that unfolded earlier that day. This is our attempt at understanding what happened, why it happened, and what could possibly come from it. Country legend JOHN CONLEE's success began in the late 1970s. His first release “Back Side Of Thirty” didn't climb the charts too high. Three more singles also met with a minimum success, although they all charted. But in March of 1978, the label released “Rose Colored Glasses,” a song John co-wrote, which became a huge hit as well as becoming his signature song. In January of 1979, the label re-released “Back Side of Thirty” which went on to become a No. 1 record, and the hits continued. The Conlee hit list includes songs like “Lady Lay Down,” “Friday Night Blues,” “Miss Emily’s Picture,” “Busted,” and “I Don’t Remember Loving You.” He's been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1981 and was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall Of Fame in 2006. John has just released an album called Classics 2 - available at iTunes - featuring many of his big hits. His latest single is called "Walkin' Behind The Star."
Dallas Smith British Columbia's Dallas Smith has skyrocketed to the very top of the Country music scene. His 2012 debut album entitled Jumped Right In generated 5 singles in the Canadian Hot 100, including the GOLD selling title-track, garnered five CCMA Award nominations and was nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 2013 JUNO Awards. Following a slew of sold out tour dates with Florida Georgia Line and Bob Seger, Dallas released 2013's Tippin' Point EP making his debut in the U.S. and setting the bar high while representing Canadian Country music's cutting edge sound. Amassing national appeal, he earned three 2014 CCMA Award nominations including Single, Album and Male Artist of the Year and is the first Canadian country artist to have 8 singles reach the Top 10 at radio in Canada. Lifted - the latest album from Dallas Smith featuring the #1 single "Wastin' Gas" - reunites him with prized producer Joey Moi (Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen). Being thankful in all circumstances.
Mixing classical influences with sacred hymns, James Conlee sings new interpretations of beloved melodies from both worlds. At times he combines actual pieces as with "Abide With Me" and "Pachelbel's Canon," "I Often Go Walking" with "Claire De Lune," and others.James has performed with the Broadway touring company of "Miss Saigon" and is a former BYU Young Ambassador. In this audio interview you'll hear about the hymns and arrangement process, how recording with the City of Prague Philharmonic provided a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience, and why several of these hymns have a personal connection to a loved one. That's this week on The Cricket and Seagull.
Faith that sticks in our schools, homes, and Church
James Cecil Dickens started his music career in the late 1930's, performing on a local radio station while attending West Virginia University. He left school early to travel the country under the name of Jimmy the Kid. Finally, in 1948, Roy Acuff heard him and helped him with a record deal and get him into the Grand Ole Opry, where he adopted his current nickname Little Jimmy Dickens. After performing for decades, Little Jimmy is still as popular as ever. We caught up with him at a party to celebrate his 90th birthday, as well as a visit to The Palm in Nashville, where he will be forever immortalized.
