An Instagram-worthy van only goes so far - you need it to be functional and reliable for an enjoyable van life.  Our guest, Kristen Bor from the popular outdoor and vanlife blog Bearfoot Theory, has lived on the road for 7 years and undergone 3 different van builds. She shares the nightmare experience of her first van build and the tough lessons she learned about hiring a custom van conversion company.  Kristen walks us through the most important considerations when hiring a van conversion company. First, learn what to look out for in a builder, from asking for references to examining their work firsthand. Kristen stresses the importance of getting educated on van systems beforehand so you can assess builders' expertise, and to make sure their construction approach matches your planned van use. We also compare notes on the many van builds we've each experienced, uncovering some key insights on features, materials, and components that might look good but do not always hold up for real life on the road.  This episode will not only equip you with the necessary insights for a successful van build but also avoid the potential pitfalls in the process.Links mentioned in this episode:Free Van Life Email SeriesFollow Kristin:FacebookYouTubeInstagramWant to live the van life but have no idea where to start? The MOVEMENT Movement

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2023 82:16

World Champion BEARfoot Lifter's Incredible Life Advice – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 197 with Chris Duffin Chris Duffin believes in living life at the extremes—extreme performance, extreme competence, and extreme achievement. A true-to-life mountain man with his story as a best-selling autobiography and upcoming documentary movie Chris has numerous accolades to list. From sitting on the board of OregonTech, where he received his engineering degree, to also on the board of the College of Functional Movement Clinicians. He holds awards and records for his inventions and unduplicated feats of strength. Using his engineering degree and MBA, he spent nearly 20 years becoming a sought-after turnaround expert in the aerospace, automotive, and industrial equipment manufacturing sectors. But most people know him for his work after moving on from that career, founding his own Education and Manufacturing companies focused on biomechanics, human movement, and personal development. As an award-winning expert in these fields, he holds patents and has been recognized for scientific innovation, and is a desired keynote speaker. In the sports performance world, Chris's work is everywhere. His game-changing products are used in nearly every professional sports team in North America, all the big-name colleges and a thousand others, all military branches (white house included), and so many more. His concepts have changed the landscape of strength training in improving performance and the systemized approaches to assessing and correcting human movement dysfunctions. With extremes again, Chris is not just a recognized thought leader but has held numerous all-time world records and become one of the strongest pound-for-pound powerlifters in the world. He holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest sumo deadlift of all time, with 1001 pounds for almost three repetitions. He also completed the same feat with a 1001lbs squat making him the only human in history to have Squatted and Deadlifted 1000+lbs for reps. He used these feats of strength to raise money and awareness for charities related to his upbringing. As for the true-to-life mountain man portion might be best left to his first book, “The Eagle & The Dragon.” Growing up homeless in the wilderness. He was raised in an abusive and chaotic household (tent, shack, tree fort at times) where his childhood was composed of skinning rattlesnakes, foraging for food, and protecting his sisters and mother. With stories of dealing with murderers, drug running and abuse, human trafficking, death, a serial killer, and extreme poverty. He could attend college as a star athlete and valedictorian after graduating high school. In college, he worked full-time to take custody of his three younger siblings and get them out of that toxic environment. It seems pointless even to add the part that he still graduated from college at the top of his class. Today, Chris is an advisor and Chief Engineer/Visionary to Kabuki Strength & Bearfoot Shoes. He is focused on his passion for personal development with his philosophies and tools around mindset, goal setting, execution, and deep introspection. He is the father of three wonderful children and husband to an amazing Canadian chef who appears in reality-TV cooking shows. If he's not with his family, working on himself and his businesses, or remodeling his house, you can find him in his shop perfecting his Mad Max off-road war machines. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Chris Duffin who gives incredible life advice. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How life involves pain and difficulty, but people have the power to choose where to direct their efforts. - Why it's important to find your next challenge rather than settling for mediocrity. - How parents should set good examples for their children so they can chase their own goals. - Why children need a stable environment that allow them to experience failure and learn from it. - How consistent success without failure can hinder the development of confidence. Today, Commander Divine speaks with Chris Duffin, health and fitness entrepreneur, author of The Eagle & the Dragon, and founder of Kabuki Strength. In this episode, Chris shares about growing up homeless as a child, his philosophy on fitness, and how he hopes to help people build resilience across every area of their lives. Key Takeaways: Weightlifting teaches you about life. Weightlifting can teach so many applicable lessons, but we often miss the connection. For example, some high-powered businessmen may execute amazing deals and strategies in the office, but then start flailing when they get to the gym. All they have to do is apply their planning and management skills, set expectations, and follow through. The inverse applies for people who get amazing results in the gym, but lack discipline in their work and home lives. Strength training should be empowering. As a trainer, you should lead someone toward not needing you. The individual has the largest amount of power in overcoming pain and creating change in their body. The trainer's job is to provide the right methodology, the right tools, and the right mindset. When people learn those three things, they can own everything. Focus on impact. When it comes to fitness, Chris focuses on efforts that are going to make the biggest impact. For example, the ability to manage and control spinal mechanics has the largest global impact on the body, which is why Chris decided to do a 1,000 pound squat and deadlift for 3 reps each. Chris takes the same high-impact approach in business as well. Case in point: the mechanics of the foot has the second largest global impact on the body, which is why Chris started Bearfoot, a minimalist shoe company. Chris' Grand Goals. Chris has three main Grand Goals that he lives his life by: 1. Demonstrate. Chris walks the walk to show what you can accomplish with the principles he teaches. 2. Inspire. Go for it. Shoot for something that is just so crazy that nobody's ever done it. Chris revels in showing people that if you set your mind to it, you can pull off things that seem impossible (like 3 reps of 1,000 pounds). 3. Be charitable. Chris has done a lot of feats of strength that also tie back into charity fundraisers for causes he believes in. The future of fitness. Chris' company Kabuki Strength makes purpose-built barbells to help athletes train more safely and efficiently. They currently produce groundbreaking equipment for 90% of the NFL and MLB teams, but they're not stopping there. Chris hopes to create a complete ecosystem of education, training tools, and data as it relates to the technology and art of coaching. He hopes to reinvent the typical gym in the future and change the face of fitness, eventually scaling to integrate with clinical care.

#17 What's New on The Bearfoot Baker Hi guys! I hope you're ready to hear about something that I've been working on for quite some time. Alan and I've have been working on a few things on the blog and now it's time to add The Cookie Network! Are you excited? I know I am. If you've listened to the podcast I'm sure you heard about the wonderful people I've found that help me create The Bearfoot Baker and I want to tell you about them. First of all, they're kind and know how to make things happen. I don't know about you, but that's huge to me. They're extremely professional, make things look great, and everything works the way it's should. Talk about huge! Most of all they make you excited about the things you're doing and encourage you to do it by providing the "blog tools" you need. Did I mention I love these people? Are you ready to meet them and get the resource links that helped me tremendously with my blog? Here we go. Purr Design- Lindsay and Taylor designed my blog and I love it! I had ideas in my head and they brought them to life. If you looking for a blog designer, branding, or graphic design you should talk to them. They have a blog, own a small business, and know what we need to make things work. Check out their site and see what they offer. I know you'll be glad you did. Melissa Rose Design & Branding - Melissa is an amazing designer and she can talk my lingo. I don't know what all the "behind the blog things" are called or I'm not always sure how to communicate these things to her, but somehow she gets in my head and gets things better than I could have imagined! Check out her site about blogging & branding, sign up for her foundation workbook, and join her Design Clubhouse where you can connect with other food and DIY bloggers. I promise you'll learn and grow confidence like I did. Once Coupled -  Lauren is the founder and developer of Once Coupled. She's a very talented woman who knows how to code and make your blog work perfectly! I don't know how she does it, but she does. She takes my ideas and asks me the right questions to find out what I want and then she explains how it will work. I don't know about you, but this is very helpful in making the right decisions so my blog will be beautiful and efficient. #17 What's New on The Bearfoot Baker All of these companies are professional and organized and they see how to help us make our blog designs come to life. They work hard and make sure things are the way you want them. So if you're considering having work done to your blog I strongly recommend you contact these talented companies to see the many ways the can help you and your blog. They're unstoppable and I'm forever grateful to them for allowing me to work with you and share cookies and desserts that make us happy. Thank you so much for helping me and giving me a blog that works! Bear hugs,

BEARFOOT is abluegrass quintet that originally formed in Alaska. The band has already made a mark with four strong releases, including their 2009 Compass Records debut, “Doors And Windows which instantly hit the top of Billboard's Bluegrass Album chart. A mere two years after their initial meeting teaching at their namesake's bluegrass camp for kids, Bearfoot earned one of roots music's most prestigious awards Telluride Bluegrass Band Champions an honor they share with artists Dixie Chicks and Nickel Creek. Now based in Nashville, the band has welcomed singer/songwriter Nora Jane Struthers as their newest addition. THE REVEREND PEYTONS BIG DAMN BAND is comprised of fingerstyle guitarist Reverend Peyton, his wife and and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz Persinger on drums and bucket. They have only been around for a few years, in that time period these country-blues aficionados from rural Indiana have played more than 250 shows annually and logged more miles on their van than most acts who have been around for a decade. Their latest CD is “Wages on SideOneDummy Records.
