Unpacking the Controversial Sexual Consent Campaign - HJ Talks About Abuse Episode Discussion

In this week's episode of HJ Talks About Abuse, hosts Kathleen Hallisey and Hannah Hodgson delve into the nuances of a controversial campaign addressing sexual consent. Aptly titled "I'm Asking For It," the campaign, fronted by Emily Atack and orchestrated by CPB London and Right to Equality, aims to push for an overhaul of legal regulations surrounding sexual offences and promote the affirmative consent model. The hosts critically analyse this campaign and its potential implications for survivors, the legal system, and societal perceptions surrounding consent. The hosts outline the campaign's aim of challenging the status quo in the realm of sexual consent - moving from ambiguities and the concept of "implied consent," to a more explicit, affirmative model where unequivocal consent is required. As they dissect the campaign, they highlight its timing and relevance, released near International Women's Day, reflecting the ongoing struggle for women's safety, rights, and acknowledgment of sexual abuse. They further probe into the paradigm shift that the new proposed consent model would bring about, not only legally, but also in the dynamics of sexual interactions. This includes the prospect of every sexual activity needing explicit consent, a change that would render previous "grey areas" obsolete, thus empowering survivors and reducing instances of victim-blaming. By bringing to the table issues of cyber flashing and cyber sexual harassment, Emily Atack's involvement and the public response, they dissect different facets of this contentious campaign. Kathleen and Hannah underscore the urgent need for a more assertive and clear legislation on consent, in response to the challenges faced by survivors and the uncertainties present in the current law. The episode ends on a hopeful note, reinforcing HJ Talks About Abuse's commitment to discourse on survivor empowerment and consent, and promising to keep listeners updated on developments related to the campaign.

Jendra Jarnagin returns to The Cinematography Podcast after 7 years to talk about her latest movie, Asking For It, a female vigilante revenge thriller, about women who exact revenge on men who have abused women. First-time director Eamon O'Rourke wanted it to be a female exploitation-style movie without the exploitation, and he and Jendra were influenced by films such as Switchblade Sisters, Belly, True Romance, and Natural Born Killers. Jendra was hired to work on the low-budget film only three weeks before the shoot, so she had to hit the ground running with a very short amount of prep time. O'Rourke had made a look book, so Jendra used what he created to get herself up to speed. The days were full of casting and scouts, but the evenings were spent as sacred one-on-one time to discuss the film and create the DP/director collaborative bond. O'Rourke was concerned about the fact that he is a white man telling a story with women of color and their experience with sexual assault. He was open to handling the material with sensitivity and listened to Jendra and the female cast and crew members about how to shoot certain scenes. They gave careful consideration to what the film wanted to say and how to portray the feeling of emotional overwhelm visually. Jendra also discusses her recent work on a 2020 commercial featuring former First Lady Michelle Obama. It was shot soon after production started returning after COVID lockdowns, and the directors had to work remotely. One of Jendra's skills is understanding how to light women, and she is very proud of her work on this commercial. She had limited time with Mrs. Obama and knew she would not be able to tweak the lighting again once they were rolling. Stephanie Hsu is a familiar face on both the stage and screen, maybe best known for originating the role of Christine in Be More Chill at Two River Theater, and then on Broadway. She previously made her Broadway debut as Karen the Computer in the original cast of Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical. Her TV and Film credits include The Path (seasons 1-3), Set It Up, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, Asking For It, and Mei in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Born in Torrance, CA, Stephanie shares that it was mostly just her and her mom growing up. The two clashed at times - her mother was not sure America was built for her as an immigrant, while Stephanie was “adamant about being an American.” As a child, Stephanie was very into basketball, and fought against the urge to become a “drama geek”. But when a fellow classmate in high school arranged an audition for her with the drama teacher, it “launched everything”, including heading to NYU to study acting.  Stephanie stresses the importance of visibility in the arts, and candidly talks with us about her role on The Marvelous Maisel - Mei, who as a bilingual, strong and independent Chinese American woman in the 1960’s, was “unlike any character” she’d ever seen in her life. During our conversation, Stephanie continues to bring us back to themes of “love”, sharing, “Love has always been my favorite thing in the whole world,” (her college thesis was about love). When she was recently commissioned by Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, to create a piece of self expression, she found herself in the silence of the pandemic trying to understand “if being in love is ok”. Stephanie walks us through the creation of her piece “Another Love Letter”, where she battled between feeling the desire and responsibility as an artist to be productive and to make something big, but also feeling drawn to explore the poetic parts of quiet simplicity.  In this episode, we talk about:  Creating her virtual commission “Another Love Letter”  Her thoughts on polyamorous relationships  One of her favorite things to do at museums  Working on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel The importance of making work you care about with people you care about  Her journey to landing a role in the new film Everything Everywhere All At Once Connect with Stephanie: Watch Another Love Letter IG: @hsulace Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Ireland is a land known for its literary exports and our guest this week is certainly adding to the country's reputation for impeccable fiction. Louise O'Neill is from West Cork and has been described as a feminist powerhouse. Her first two novels, Only Ever Yours and Asking For It, were written for young adults but tackled very tough topics including sexual assault and consent. Her books have won multiple awards and been bestsellers on the Irish fiction charts. Her latest novel and her second adult fiction, After the Silence, was published on September 3 and, at the time of recording just a week later, was number 2 on the Irish bestseller charts.  Just a warning before listening: This episode deals with discussions of domestic violence, and may be triggering for some listenings. Cork author Louise O'Neill joined Roisin Ingle on the podcast to talk about her latest novel After The Silence. The book marks a departure for O'Neill in that it's a thriller but what hasn't changed is the uncompromising, gently probing voice of the writer of novels such as Asking For It which on publication became a national talking point. In After The Silence, set on a small Island off the coast of Cork, she explores themes such as emotional abuse and the kind of notoriety that follows a small community devastated by a traumatic event - in this case the unexplained murder of a beautiful young Islander. O'Neill talks about writing, about life in Lockdown and about the new and very different experience of writing a thriller.

It’s called the Fair-Haired Dumbbell, but it’s not just the name and psychedelic design that make it unique. It's also the first commercial building in Oregon and perhaps the first in the nation to raise money via online crowdfunding, and for as little as $3,000, you can own a piece of it.The Oregon Symphony Gets Animated - 8:39As the second in its collaborative SightSound trilogy, the Oregon Symphony invited animator Rose Bond to create visuals to accompany Messiaen's epic symphony "Turangalîla" from Dec. 3-5. The three of them stopped making music together a couple of years ago, but in October they got back together for benefit shows on behalf of all-ages music venues, including Portland’s Friends of Noise. Adrienne Truscott: What's So Funny About Rape Jokes? - 28:48There’s an ongoing debate in the comedy world about rape jokes. Are they acceptable provocation or, as Donald Trump might argue, harmless locker room talk? Or are they beyond the pale? One thing both sides can likely agree upon is that, with a few exceptions, they tend to be the kind of jokes that only male comedians tell. That is, until Adrienne Truscott. Truscott is a veteran of the international cabaret scene, but last year, she came through town with her first stab at a stand-up comedy show about rape jokes, and it was as smart and funny as it was unsettling. She's back, thanks to Boom Arts, with a second run of "Adrienne Truscott's Asking For It," Dec. 8–11.Jamila Clarke and Wolff Gallery - 38:33Wolff Gallery is a new spot on NW Glisan Street showing works from traditionally underrepresented artists. They currently have an evocative narrative photography exhibition by Jamila Clarke on display. Printing Trees with Bend's Pat Clark - 46:05Pat Clark is an artist and the founder of the print-making haven Atelier 6000. All kinds of work gets made there, but, being in Bend, it’s one place that originates interesting images of the natural world. Clark’s work is no exception. Some of her prints and drawings are in the show “Inspired By Trees” now on view at the World Forestry Center in Portland.

Louise O'Neill is one of the most inspiring generous people who I've befriended on Twitter. She is an Irish author and columnist, with a strong focus on feminism in her writing. Her first book, Only Ever Yours was published in 2014 and earned the title "Newcomer of the Year" of the Irish Book Awards and was the winner of the inaugural YA Book Prize in 2015. Her second book, Asking For It, was named Irish Times Book of the Month in September 2015. Rights of both books have been sold - film and TV rights for Only Ever Yours and TV rights for Asking For It. HOW VERY EXCITING. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What does MALCOLM GLADWELL, the brilliant writer and thinker have to say about the financial markets? Nothing… but this ASTOUNDING observation from him has everything – and I mean EVERYTHING – to do with success in what could be a turbulent market. I’m Bryan Ellis. This is Episode 177.-----Hello, SDI Nation. Welcome to the podcast of record for savvy self-directed investors like you! It’s said if we don’t learn the lessons of history, we’re doomed to repeat them. Here’s a quick lesson NOT about investing… and completely about it all at the same time:“In the fall of 1973, the Syrian army began to gather a large number of tanks, artillery batteries, and infantry along its border with Israel. Simultaneously, to the south, the Egyptian army canceled all leaves, called up thousands of reservists, and launched a massive military exercise, building roads and preparing anti-aircraft and artillery positions along the Suez Canal. On October 4, an Israeli aerial reconnaissance mission showed that the Egyptians had moved artillery into offensive positions. That evening, Aman, the Israeli military intelligence agency, learned that portions of the Soviet fleet near Port Said and Alexandria had set sail, and that the Soviet government had begun airlifting the families of Soviet advisers out of Cairo and Damascus. Then, at four o’clock in the morning on October 6, Israel’s director of military intelligence received an urgent telephone call from one of the country’s most trusted intelligence sources. Egypt and Syria, the source said, would attack later that day. Top Israeli officials immediately called a meeting. Was war imminent? The head of Aman, Major General Eli Zeira, looked over the evidence and said he didn’t think so. He was wrong. That afternoon, Syria attacked from the east, overwhelming the thin Israeli defenses in the Golan Heights, and Egypt attacked from the south, bombing Israeli positions and sending either thousand infantry streaming across the Suez. Despite all the warnings of the previous weeks, Israeli officials were caught by surprise. Why couldn’t they connect the dots?”Those words come from the venerable Malcolm Gladwell – one of the most brilliant minds of our age – in his book called “What the Dog Saw”.So Major General Eli Zeira had absolutely every reason in the world to think that Israel WOULD be attacked by Syria and Egypt. Literally every single piece of evidence suggested that the attack was imminent and that Syria and Egypt were very serious. And let’s face it: Israeli intelligence has the reputation of being, shall we say, rather effective. But in this case – despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary – Israel chose NOT to set up defensive positions in response to enemy movements, and the tiny Middle Eastern country suffered mightily for it.Why? Why did Major General Zeira make such a clearly WRONG decision in the face of overwhelming evidence to go the other way?Consider this: Do you know anyone who was hurt by the mortgage meltdown of ’07 and ’08? Maybe even you, yourself, took some serious shrapnel from that one.But have you noticed that… even though the financial carnage from that event was very, very widespread, affecting investors and the general public alike… almost nobody seemed to see it coming at the time… yet now, if you ask nearly anybody, they’ll tell you, almost derisively, that anyone with a brain could have predicted it?Yet… almost nobody did predict what happened. The few who did became billionaires. What we all recognized at the time was that something was wrong… something fundamental was not right… something that could be damaging to us all was happening. And yet… almost nobody had the good sense to get out of the real estate market or even better yet, figure out a way to bet AGAINST it.Does that make you and me foolish? I don’t think so.In fact, you may be tempted to think that Israel’s Major General Zeira was just careless or even foolish. But there’s far more to the story. At the time, it was a rather common occurrence for Egyptians to mobilize for war… it was common for tanks and war supplies to be sent to the canal and for fortifications to be built. The president of Egypt made multiple public statements in years preceding this attack that war was imminent… and yet, it never happened.Egypt mobilized a whopping NINETEEN TIMES between January and October of ’73… and in not a single one of those cases did war commence.Furthermore, the trusted intelligence source who warned Israel the day of the attack… well, that person had recently given two completely wrong promptings.Given the extreme cost and difficulty of mobilizing for war, Israel – which is a tiny country with a citizen army – couldn’t afford to mobilize at every threat. The threat in early October of ’73 seemed to Major General Zeira a serious threat, to be sure… but a threat to be defended against on another day.How does this relate to investing? It’s a rather apt comparison, my friends. As manager of a private equity firm that buys real estate in some markets that have a volatile history – can anybody say NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – I think about this type of thing every single day. I think about the reports that venture capital is not flowing as freely into silicon valley, and I know that could be a problem since the entirety of northern California is just it’s own little universe that rises and falls largely on the strength of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. I know that my target markets have a history of extreme volatility… on the upside and the downside. I know that the economy at large is NOT as strong as the press is leading us to believe.I also know that there are some substantial and profoundly negative factors that are not in play right now like they were in 2007 and 2008, and that’s a very good thing. I also know that most – not all, but most of the time – real estate markets follow a pattern when they’re beginning to reverse in a huge way, and that pattern isn’t in clear evidence presently, and isn’t in evidence at all in some very large markets. What do you believe? For me… and for my clients… I’ve responded by tightening our buying criteria. We’re going a bit more towards the “no deal is better than a marginal deal” approach. And in truth… this will likely cause me to miss some… but not most… opportunities. On this very day, actually, I’m tasked with making an allocation to my buyers for an auction that happens tomorrow, December 30… and there are a LOT of great opportunities. Still, we’re going to be conservative in our allocations because, at the end of the day, I don’t want to have missed the signs of impending meltdown.Right now, those signs aren’t in evidence. But there are winds blowing in that direction. Times like these usually presage a shift in markets, but whether that shift is an outright reversal or merely a temporary plateau… the reality is this: There is STILL opportunity… and a lot of it… to be had right now… and I believe for the near future as well. That’s why we’re hoping to buy several houses this week alone… and really get next year started off right for my private equity clients. We got one late last week where we’re expecting a net ROI in the neighborhood of 23-25% within 120 days… and both history and current market conditions support that projection, so it’s very exciting. My friends, tomorrow I tell you about what happens to SDIRadio in the New Year… and I think you’re going to love it… because you’ve been ASKING FOR IT. This week we tackle the big subjects: the future of the Portland Building, the humor (or lack thereof) of rape jokes, the history of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival & more. Join us!The Future Of Portland's Most Loved/Hated BuildingThis week the Portland City Council will consider legislation to start renovating one of the city’s most recognizable works of architecture: The Portland Building. It's both Portland's most famous building (it's the text book case for postmodern architect) and perhaps its most reviled. First up, we take a look at what's wrong with the building. Hint: the problems run deeper than a color scheme that feels drawn from your grandma's kitchen. Then we listen to an excerpt of the building's architect, Michael Graves, before hearing the case for remodeling the building smartly from Randy Gragg, the director of the University of Oregon's John Yeon Center for Architecture and the Landscape.Adrienne Truscott's "Asking For It"There’s been a lot of talk in the comedy world over the last several years about rape jokes: are they funny, or seriously unfunny? Now there’s a show that tackles the issue head-on. The politically-minded theater presenters Boom Arts are bringing performer Adrienne Truscott to town for a show the New York Times called “as upsetting as it is hilarious." Truscott sports a blonde wig, jean jacket, and little else. Literally, she’s naked from the waist down. The show’s called “Adrienne Truscott’s Asking For It" (actually, the name’s quite a bit longer, but we’ll let Truscott explain it to producer Aaron Scott), and it runs through Oct. 24 at the Headwaters Theater.opbmusic Session: Alela Diane and Ryan FrancesconiMusicians Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi didn’t set out to make an album, but they did. It’s called “Cold Moon,” and it came out Oct. 23. You can see videos of their opbmusic Session here, or catch them live at Revolution Hall on Oct. 17.Oregon Experience: The Oregon Shakespeare FestivalOregon Experience opens its season on Monday with a special about one of the brightest jewels in Oregon’s arts crown: the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Sure, you might know that it's the biggest regional theater in the country with the biggest resident acting company. Sure, you know that it attracts folks from around the world. But did you know it has a mammoth costume warehouse for rentals to everyone from Justin Timberlake on "Saturday Night Live" to Al Pacino in "Richard III."Disjecta Brings On The NoiseChiara Giovando, the new curator-in-residence at the north Portland contemporary art center Disjecta, gives us a tour of her first show, "The Book Of Scores." It's all about sound art. Oregon Art Beat: Artist Greg RobinsonThis weekend the Portland Art Museum opens a brand new Center for Contemporary Native Arts with an exhibition featuring the work of three Oregon Native artists. One of those artists is Greg Robinson, who taught himself to produce pieces in the traditional style of his tribe, the Chinook. If you have a picture in your mind right now of what his pieces look like, think again. Chinook art isn’t anything like the popular stereotypes of Pacific Northwest native art. The music for today came from the local band Black Prairie’s album “Wild Ones,” who did the album in tandem with a book by Jon Mooallem about the strange and wonderful relationship between humans and animals. Mooallem will be one of several public radio personalities sharing stories at the singular Pop-up Magazine on Oct. 20 at the Aladdin Theater. It’s a touring show that’s like watching a magazine get performed live, with journalists and writers doing everything from reading short humorous essays to telling feature length stories with documentary footage and photographs.
