Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions." The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin. Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021. As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000. In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences. A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad. Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006. In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009. Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008. In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun." On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021. Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health. Go figure. The Sugarhill Gang was the first hip-hop group to record a song and the first hip-hop group or artist to make it onto the Billboard charts. That's why their 1979 single "Rapper's Delight" remains one of the most influential hip-hop songs today. This week, we bring the full and candid conversation with group member Master Gee. Guests: Master Gee Credits: Jill Webb, Producer Dempsey Pillot, Producer Anddy Egan-Thorpe, Audio Engineer Femi Redwood, Host and Executive Producer
Introduction: In this episode, we delve into the life and legacy of Sylvia Robinson, the music executive and producer who brought hip hop to the masses and changed the music landscape forever. Sylvia was the founder of Sugar Hill Records and was responsible for producing some of the biggest hip hop hits of all time. Segment 1: Ed Anderson, a DJ at the station, was asked to play the song during the last hour of his show. The song became an instant hit and went viral, with people calling the station to ask what it was. The song was a commercial success and peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, number one in Canada and the Netherlands, and number three in the UK. Segment 2: Sylvia changed the name of her label from All Platinum to Sugar Hill Records after the success of the Sugar Hill Gang. She went on to sign successful acts such as the Treacherous Three, Funky Four Plus One, and others. Sylvia even produced some of the music videos for her artists, including working with a young Spike Lee. She signed Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to create the hit song "The Message", which was considered one of the greatest songs of all time by Time Magazine. Segment 3: Despite the success of Sugar Hill Records, not everyone was happy about it. The originators of hip-hop didn't understand how three inexperienced MCs not from the birthplace of hip-hop could create its first commercial success. Sylvia knew that for the evolution of hip hop, she had to put out fun and great music, but she also had to get out what was going on in the streets. Segment 4: Sugar Hill Records fell on hard times due to competition, and financial and legal problems. Many of the founding hip-hop pioneers were going commercial, and new players in the game, including LL Cool J, Run DMC, and the Beastie Boys, were entering the scene. Sylvia and her husband Joe would divorce, and Sylvia would create a new label with a group from New Jersey called the New Style. The group would resurface two years later under a new name, Naughty by Nature. Conclusion: Sylvia passed away in 2011 due to heart failure and was 76 years old. In 2022, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame due to her contribution of bringing hip hop to the masses. His hosts focus on three of his pieces, written over the course of 15 years for Spin, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, with Steven reminiscing about meeting Joni Mitchell and Sugar Hill matriarch Sylvia Robinson.Clips from Steven's May 1993 audio interview with Suede's Brett Anderson and Mat Osman provide a good excuse to discuss the emerging "Englishness" of post-grunge Britain and the abiding fantasy of UK bands "taking America". Staying Stateside, Jasper praises the week's featured artist Lizzo, with reference to pieces about the funk-pop star that stretch back to 2013. Mark then pays tribute to former Miles Davis bassist Michael Henderson, who died on July 19th, and talks us through his favourite library additions from the past fortnight — including pieces about Yoko Ono, Pink Floyd, Juan Atkins and the aforementioned Miles Davis. Barney mentions pieces about Canned Heat and World of Twist, while Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on D'Angelo and the great Black-owned record labels...Many thanks to special guest Steven Daly; visit his RBP writer's page for more on him and his writing.Pieces discussed: Orange Juice, Joni Mitchell, Deee-Lite, Sugarhill Gang, Suede audio, Suede, Lizzo profile, Lizzo live, The Year of Lizzo, Michael Henderson, David Dalton podcast, Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Robert Fripp, Juan Atkins, Yoko Ono, Dusty Springfield, Canned Heat, Earl King, World of Twist, D'Angelo, Black Artist-Owned Labels and Sean Paul's teenage obsessions.
iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon “I'm not just a Bass Player, I'm a Sound System” As bassist for the legendary rap label Sugarhill Records backing Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five to the pioneering Living Colour, Doug Wimbish has lent his innovative and creative bass grooves and sounds to a roster of world-renowned musicians. Considered a pioneer in Hip-Hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques, Doug's mastery of the bass is unparalled. As one of the most versatile session and touring bassists in the industry, Doug moves readily from pop and mainstream rock to hip-hop, funk, metal, symphonic metal, reggae, R&B, electronic, world and experimental music. Doug Wimbish is probably best known as the cutting edge lead bassist in the Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Living Colour, but looking beyond the obvious, one quickly sees that Doug's influence and impact on the world's musical culture is much more vast and significant than often written or realized. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's “The Message”, listed by Rollingstone.com as the #1 Greatest Hip Hop Song of all time, featured Doug's bass lines as do many other Sugarhill Records classics including “Apache”, “8th Wonder” and “White Lines”. Wimbish wrote the bass line on The Sequence's “Funk You Up”. To get an idea of the respect Doug has earned within the music industry, consider that in one week in 1991, Doug received personal phone calls from Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Seal, all asking him to work with them. Doug made the decision to work with Living Colour and joined the band, becoming its permanent bassist. He actively records and tours today with his band mates Vernon Reid, Corey Glover and Will Calhoun. The group's latest album, “Shade”, was released in September of 2017. In addition to his work with Living Colour, Doug's highly regarded career spanning all musical genres has also included recording, producing and touring with many world renowned artists including The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Herb Albert, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Carly Simon, Seal, Al Green, Billy Idol, George Clinton, Depeche Mode, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, James Brown, Mos Def, Tarja Turunen, Ronnie Wood, Freddie Jackson, Michael Bolton, Schiller, Cheb Khaled, Hari Haran and Peter Wolf, to name a few. From his early days as one of Hip-Hop's earliest architects in the Original Sugarhill Records Rhythm Section, to his long-time membership in Living Colour, TackHead, Little Axe, Jungle Funk, HeadFake, and then on to more recent collaborations including DMD the Vibes with Daru Jones & Marcus Machado, Doug continues to prove himself as one of the world's finest, versatile and most sought after bass guitarists. Not only was Sylvia an incredibly talented performer herself, playing guitar on Ike & Tina tracks as well as her own smash hits like "Love is Strange" and "Pillow Talk", Sylvia was known for her ear for hit tracks. The mind behind some of hip hop's most iconic, recognizable, and influential songs, she was an executive at Sugar Hill Records. "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message" changed the game forever, and it makes you wonder... where would hip hop be without her? Rapper's Delight is responsible for crossing genre lines and introducing the world to the music that was happening on the streets in Harlem. In 1981, Mr. Schick, aka Danny Rivera, made history as the first MC ever to rap on a record in Spanish. The song was "Disco Dream" by The Mean Machine on Sugar Hill Records. Although it enjoyed modest success on the radio, it's been largely forgotten. Until now. This is the extraordinary story of the events that led to the record and the tragedy, perseverance, and friendship that followed. To quote a lyric from Disco Dream: "Like a little bit of tuna with some mayonnaise, when you hear Schick rap you'll be amazed."
We have long wanted to showcase the epic Alabama Shakes in our weekly music podcast and here they are! A brilliant choice from Tobin to open the show, let You Ain't Alone blow you into the cosmos with its sublime vocals and musical artistry. Brittany will then bring you back to earth and leave you with tears streaming down your face with the achingly beautiful Joe, live from Austin City Limits. Similarly to our suggestion from Dennis we have a brilliant Listener Suggestion from yesteryear sent in by Eelong. French electro swing gets some well-deserved airplay in this episode as well. Welcome to this episode of the From the Bottom of the Record Box music podcast! Track Listing You Ain't Alone Alabama ShakesGolden Gaze Ian BrownThe Sun is Shining Fleetwood MacNow or Never Now MetricLone Digger Caravan PalaceCrow Black Chicken Bad LiversJoe Alabama Shakes Bad Livers vs. Alabama Shakes This week's Vinyl Selection is from the debut album from Texas bluegrass kings Bad Livers. You can listen to the track taken straight from the vinyl in the track link above. Bad livers came kickin', pluckin' and screamin' into the world in 1990 in Austin Texas, when guitar and banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes came up with this idea that it would be great to have a small-format acoustic band that could play different kinds of music [at a] virtuoso level, where they could play any kind of music. They played regularly in Austin and garnered quite a following, playing weekly at the Saxon Pub. They continued to define their own sound and categorically stated they were not a bluegrass outfit. At this time Barnes remarked about their live sets at the time: We were doing Mississippi John Hurt, gospel tunes, Captain Beefheart—anything, really, but it was Motörhead or the Misfits that caught on. The mid 90's saw them spending most of their time touring and working on side projects including looking for a new record label to record with. As a result, they finally plumped for Sugar Hill Records signing a three record deal. Their later albums, especially Blood and Mood (their final album), failed to engage with their listenership. Sadly by the time the year 2000 rolled in it appeared that Bad Livers were over for good. Such a shame as they were so different and musically gifted to a virtuosic level. This isn't bluegrass and it isn't this or that. It's Bad Liver music. We end up making our own thing That there, that heading is the title of the third studio album from Caravan Palace. I described it on the show as unpronounceable, just a bunch of punctuation. As a result of that, I am determined to discover the meaning of it. Turns out that it is meant to read Robot Face. It does make sense once you know. Interestingly the initial band was founded as a three-piece but further members were needed for live performances. Interestingly these were found via the MySpace website. Continuing to use the internet as a tool the band gained popularity by releasing a number of demos and promo singles online. They enjoyed success on their first tour, in their native France, in 2006/2007. They appeared with this track on Jools Holland's 2016/17 Hootenanny, also performing a cover of Black Betty. However, more famously this track features in one of the live sets performed by Professor Gramophone!
In this week's episode we're featuring the first in a trilogy of bluegrass albums that Dolly Parton released around the turn of the century: "The Grass Is Blue" (1999). After Decca Nashville closed their doors in 1998, Dolly found herself without a record deal for the first time in thirty years. She had talked about doing a legacy bluegrass project in the past, but now was the time. Teaming with Sugar Hill Records, she assembled some of the best pickers you can name, some well chosen covers and four of her own compositions and punched out what some might call her best solo album since the early 70s. Jerry Douglas on dobro wrote: "Dolly's performance brought this cream of the crop band leaping to it's feet. I consider it an honour to have been part of this project and see its culmination to be a momentous shot in the arm for bluegrass music." And he wasn't lying: with Dolly's starpower, her wonderful trembly warble and Appalachian heritage, she's made for bluegrass: this album has been partly credited with a surge in popularity in bluegrass music around the year 2000. Listen in and you'll see why.

Delbert McClinton has two gifts that have served him well. He's got a one in a million voice. It's thunder and whiskey and leather and silk. It's instantly recognizable. It's innate and inimitable. Delbert's other gift is a lifelong stubborn refusal to lend that voice to anything he doesn't love, and he's got really top drawer taste. He has released nothing for the sake of a short term hit and thus nothing that he needs to apologize for. Over 50 years. Delbert's the subject of a new biography, One of the Fortunate Few, which came out late last year. It's by established Texas-based music writer Diana Finlay Hendricks. It's a great read and it was great preparation to talk about coming of age in Ft Worth TX, lighting out for California on a whim and chasing dreams across the country living out of a bus for years. He helped establish a beach head for roots music in New York in the 70s and inspired the Blues Brothers band. He then settled in Nashville where his songwriting took new leaps forward and he made the best recordings of his career for New West Records. Also, a conversation with John Strohm, the new president of Rounder Records and Sugar Hill Records, two legendary roots labels that are now part of the very large but musically-focused Concord Music group.

“Life is the sum of your choices.”I would like to share with you someone in my life who has influenced me greatly, my father, Rich Dittman. He was a self-sacrificing man, who was fair in all of his dealings with others. Rich’s characteristic of sacrificing his time and energy for others was quite authentic – he was never trying to gain anything for himself. This is my tribute to him, may he rest in peace. I love you. Tim Costa John Ramsey: Listen to a special Hillbilly House music mix created by Timothy Costa to celebrate Rich's life. It will air at midnight tonight on Rich's old station, WWUH in West Hartford, CT. 91.3 in central CT. Listen on line at wwuh.org or use the free tunein app and just search for WWUH. This special will also be heard on WAPJ 89.9 and 105.1 in WAPJ FM 89.9 & 105.1 Torrington, CT, WWEB 89.9 in Wallingford and WDJW 89.7 in Somers. www.wwuh.org | WWUH 91.3 FM wwuh.org Bernard Bruce: Absolutely love to you Rich Dittman and Tim Costa - my first musical collaborations with these guys waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1989 when I moved to Hartford and worked at the University of Hartford. I will carry on with you in my heart, Mr. Dittman! Mike Ross: R I P Rich Dittman , Thank you for taking me under your wing and into your home to Educate me on House Music and music with a funky vibe. I can remember leaving Rainbo after the midnight ramble and heading to the airport to catch a flight to New York for the NMS. You always had the hookups to the main events we needed to go to and the endless promotion copies. If it were not for Hillbilly House Records Piano Negro would not be on the map in Chicago as strong as it is today. My endless box of WWUH tapes will bring back some great memories. To Timothy Costa and the family I Love you all , Big Bear. Nico Mulder: Tonight I recieved sad news !! One of my true all time friends, Rich Dittman passed away. This was quit sudden and unespected. Rich his outstanding feel and knowledge of early House music is unsurpassed. His library of the old school early Chicago & Detroit scene is Smithsonian worthy. Together with his son DJ Timmy Costa, they formed a music stronghold called "The Two Hillbillies". TheirCollege radio show had gone "national". I was lucky to run into those guys in the late 80's - begin 90's. I imported House Music from Rotterdam into the USA. Got the Hillbillies to play the stuff on their "national" show. Together with them, I had set up a nationwide network of the most influencial DJ's in the USA, tapping into Rich his portfolio. If Rich "pushed" a record...people listened. Over the years we became such good friends, spend many many hours listening to music, he educated me in "how to listen". Timmy and I produced our own track called "Sploey". We never released it but used it in a great mix, I still have it somewhere in a box. After I moved back to Holland Rich has visited me numerous times. In no time the day was exchanged for the night. The Underground scene in The Netherlands had two visitors filled with good spirits, humor and an unbelieveble stamina. The amount of ribs we ate during our adventures at "De Klos" in Amsterdam is luckly unknown When he returned to the US, we had email contcact on a daily basis. Recently, Timmy has been signed by a NY label and is producing and making track after track. Recently he made me a homage track called "Nico, The Flying Dutchman". There is not a track leaving his studio before it has to pass my ears. I do not have a digital foto handy of Rich and me, I do have somewhere in my "vault" some pix of the early days on hard copy. When looking for such a picture, I found Rich" old cassette player he left at my house many mant years ago. I remember what he said when I told him that forgot his player. "No..thats my gift to you. There will be a day that all those cassettes will be replaced with "creepy shit" where you can listen music on. This player has give me hours and hours of pleasure. Do not throw it out, you might need it some day" Whilst looking for a pix and finding this little Gizmo, I was satisfied by just posting a little story, instead of making it a picture show. he wanted it that way. R.I.P Rich...luv ya, Man !!! Joe Incorvaia: I met Rich while sitting in on Markie Gee's radio show at WWUH. He had come up to the station during an overnight shift to meet with Mark and talk house music. Myself, being a child of the Brooklyn/NYC Disco and Hip Hop scene, we immediately hit it off. He then introduced me to his "son" Tim Costa. I never understood the relationship or how they came into each others' lives until now. It really is an amazing story. Knowing the relationship and how much they looked out for each other makes it that much more special. I remember various outings together where he took me away from a very awkward college life and showed me how to live in the moment. I learned about New Haven Pizza, met the band behind my favorite Sugar Hill Records, ate my first Gray's Papaya hot dog and he helped me promote the first Hip Hop group I ever worked with. Anyone who knew Rich will tell you that he was the most accepting, kind and loyal friend that a human being could ever have. His passion for music and commitment to help bring his beloved House Music to the masses always inspired me. Over the years we lost touch; life gets in the way sometimes. I always missed those times. I will always miss Rich but I know some day we'll all be reunited for one huge eternal party!! Joe Clausell: Hello Tim, I am so sorry to read this news. my memories of your father, as well as with all of you were what the music industry should have aspired to be in terms of both kindness and being real. I am sure that where ever he has transcended to that he is grooving. I take this moment to send you and your family my condolences but filled with love and happiness. With more love Joaquin Chris Pellerin: I had the privilege to meet Rich, I remember sitting out in his backyard just shooting the shit. I think he was a mentor to all who knew him, since he really cared about the people around him. I , too, learned so much from him. RIP Ditty Bob Leblanc: I'm not sure what year I met Ditt but my first day of BCHS as a freshman he drove me to school in his '54 Caddy hearse. We spent many hours together practice for the band. NYC trips and hanging out. So sorry to hear this news. My condolences to Lisa Addison David and Ruth. Rest in peace. Bob LeBlanc. The Bunkers (uk) I first met Dit through my brother Ian in the late 70s/early 80s during one of his many visits to the UK at that time and immediately realised what a great character he was. We were warmly welcomed into the Dittman home by Dit and Lisa (and their many cats!) during our unforgettable trips to the US in 1983 and 1988. We also all met up again more recently in 2010 and had a great day together in NYC, when our son Daniel met Dit for the first time, with him thinking what a cool character he was. Tony Brown: My friendship with Dit started in 1976, when we met him at the Reading Festival in the First met Dit in 1976 at the Reading Festival in the UK. Stayed with him and Lisa in 1979. Such a character and will remember the great times together. All of his friends in the UK will miss him very much and he will remain in our thoughts for ever. Joan Beatson: When I think of Rit I remember his great love for NYC --I can still picture him behind the wheel of some old van many years ago as he drove Lisa, me and his "limey" pals from England to NYC for a night of dancing in the clubs. I remember visiting Lisa in the hospital after Addison's birth and the look on Rit's face as he held his newborn son. I remember Rit wanting to make sure that Addison grew up watching all the "important" classic cartoons, like the Katzenjammer Kids. And I remember Rit's love for music and his phenomenal record collection. Lisa Roberge: When I heard of Rit's passing I started thinking of all the good times we spent years ago when we would take trips to Manhatten to go dancing!! They were in some really old clunkers that he proudly drove until the poor cars could not go another inch!!! One time in particular we had to stop and take a picture of the odometer as it was turning over to 100,000 miles!! Then there was the time we broke down on the way home from an night of dancing and partying in NY... We were all dressed up in our night of dancing clothes and Rit had forgotten to leave his tools in the car so we had to wait for help. While waiting we had to use a bathroom and the only place nearby was a school in Brewster which was just starting their day, we were looked at like we were aliens by some kids that were passing by and we looked on them the same way because their school had a large claw machine that dispensed apples ( this was in early 80's)!! Thanks Rit for some great memories. And, I am sure that everyone who's life you touched have some great memories to remember and share as well. May you Rest in Peace! Uncle Remus: Dj Dick, Thank you for the music mentoring and the trips to the "Big Apple." I've experienced more in one day hanging with you than anyone can imagine. Lisa and Addison my prayers to you both. John "Uncle Remus" Vanden Heuvel Greg Clauss: So very sad to hear of Dit's passing, but so very happy that I had the privilege of having him be a huge part of my life. His memory and the times we shared together will live with me forever. He was a friend that gave you his all, someone that loved to share all his knowledge and made me a much better person than I would have ever been had I not had him in my life. Lisa, Addison I offer you my sincere condolences. The world was and continues to be a much brighter place because of his presence in it. Thank you Rit for enriching my life, for shaping me into the person I am today. I love you. May you rest in peace and have a Chevy Nova that never needs to be worked on where ever you are. You made sure others were happy in this life and I wish you the BEST in the next life. Until we meet again Ditty.
Live from the NerdMelt Showroom in Hollywood, Greg salutes sweet bread, soldiers and Sugar Hill Records.
This week the Two Guys with PhDs are rappin' to the beat with two new books that will funk you up. That's right, DJ D and Kunka Kool spend this episode getting down with Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen III: Century (Top Shelf/Knockabout) and Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree 2 (Fantagraphics). First, they look at the latest hardbound collection from Moore and O'Neill, bringing together all three of their previously published Century installments: 1910, 1969, and 2009. The guys spend a good deal of time discussing the kind of readers that come to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, what their expectations might be, and how some may not be ideal for Moore's kind of writing. Can those unfamiliar with the previous League stories truly comprehend what's going on in Century? Can readers unfamiliar with — or uninterested in — literary and pop-cultural marginalia come away from the book with an understanding of what Moore is attempting to do? These are some of the questions Andy and Derek discuss, and they recommend that it wouldn't be a bad idea for readers to come to Century with annotations readily at hand. (Two great online sources for these are Jess Nevin's annotations website as well as postings by the Mindless Ones.) Next, the guys discuss Ed Piskor's latest volume of Hip Hop Family Tree. This second book covers the scene from 1981-1983, and it picks up right where last year's first volume left off. Among other highlights, the guys talk about Piskor's take on Sylvia Robinson and Sugar Hill Records, the evolution of Run-DMC, the resistance of many rappers to put their efforts on vinyl, the significance of Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style, and the role Fab Five Freddy played in bringing together uptown and downtown cultures. They specifically focus on Piskor's art and the way he tells his story. Hip Hop Family Tree is a series of anecdotes and ongoing storylines, first published on Boing Boing, that may appear fragmented at first, but a careful reading reveals an interconnectedness that makes for an engaging history. And the way that Piskor represents key players in early hip hop culture (e.g., Afrika Bambbataa, Melle Mel, Russell Simmons, Mr. Magic, Lonzo Williams, and Rick Rubin) is both revealing and humorous. Whether or not you're a fan of hip hop — Andy is, Derek really isn't — Hip Hop Family Tree is a series you definitely have to check out.
DONNA THE BUFFALO's feel-good, groove-oriented, danceable and often socially conscious music all began over twenty years ago with roots in old time fiddle music that evolved into a soulful electric Americana mix infused with elements of cajun/ zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country. Donna the Buffalo is known for touring the country remaining fiercely independent as one of the industrys most diverse roots-music bands and has "earned a reputation as one of the most respected, eclectic and hardest-working acts today," praises Encore. The band just released their 10th studio album 'Tonight, Tomorrow and Yesterday' [Sugar Hill Records]. ELIZA RICKMAN's presence on stagewhether she wears flowers in her hair, or stuffed birds; whether she plays a toy piano or a grand pianois an enveloping, soft darkness, impossible to ignore. It is quite a surprise that Rickman didnt even realize she could sing until after she earned a degree in orchestration from Azusa Pacific University, because her voice is the most enthralling and salient feature of any on the tracks from her new album O, You Sinners. And this is saying something, considering her deftness as a pianist and her subtlety as a composer. Fans of Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, and Andrew Bird will not want to miss her unique per-formance.
Hey there! I'm Kelly Sutton. We are so glad you’re here for another Inside Music Row! We've got lots coming up on today’s show, so let’s get started! Willie Nelson will release new material with Sony and Legacy Recordings next week. “Band of Brothers” features 14 performances, plus nine brand-new songs. Since October’s release of his last project “To All The Girls…”, which was Willie’s first top ten album in more than thirty years, fans have been anxious for more. “Band of Brothers” is Willie’s first album of mostly new original material in almost twenty years. Willie says “it’s good to be writing again,” and I’m sure his fans will agree. Alan Jackson might be somewhat used to being at the top of the country charts, but his latest gospel album “Precious Memories Volume Two” was named Top Christian Album at the Billboard Music Awards. This album was a follow up to his 2006 almost double platinum “Precious Memories” project, and is a collection of traditional hymns that Alan just wasn’t able to fit on the first album. More than a year after its release, the new volume remains in the Top 50 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Average Joe’s Entertainment is now more than just a record label. The premiere issue of “The Average Joes” full color comic book will hit stores July first. The comic book features Colt Ford and his friends as superheroes selflessly saving the world and fighting crime in the name of justice. Look for the new material available at Wal-Mart in Colt’s new album “Thanks For Listening” as well as other select outlets and live shows. Lee Ann Womack has waited almost seven years to release new music, but that wait is almost over! “The Way I’m Livin’” will arrive in stores September 23rd as her first release on Sugar Hill Records. The high impact title track was just released to radio last week. Now it's time to go Inside The Song. Lee Anna Culp’s latest single is “Big Love,” which she came up with almost by accident. Here is Lee Anna talking about that song, which asks some tough questions.
SARAH JAROSZ - 22- year-old, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who hails from just outside Austin, TX. A recent graduate from the prestigious New England Conservatory, she is releasing her third album, 'Build Me Up From Bones', for Sugar Hill Records. She has toured the United States extensively, as well as Canada and the UK, taped Austin City Limits and the BBC Series The Transat-lantic Sessions and appeared on A Prairie Home Companion. OLD MAN LUEDECKE is an award-winning roots singer-songwriter from Chester, Nova Scotia, Canada. After touring the globe, winning multiple Juno Awards, and becoming a father to twin girls, Luedecke has finally found confidence in himself, and his art. His latest 'Tender Is The Heart' was produced by Tim O'Brien and goes beyond his beloved solo, banjo-driven folk tunes.
Nate Query plays bass for both and , and has made playing music with nationally touring bands his main job for around twenty years. You can check out Query playing live with Black Prairie on KEXP . Their new album, "," comes out April 22 on Sugar Hill Records.
We kick off another Inside Music Row with the mention of Garth Brooks as he is kicking off his new world tour with a bang! Garth has now scheduled two shows in July at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, which have been dubbed the Comeback Special Event. Look for the main tour to kick off sometime this Fall. Up next is Jason Aldean as he has recently partnered with Major League Baseball for portions of the 2014 "Burn It Down" Tour. Look for Florida Georgia Line and Tyler Farr to join him when the show opens May 1st. John Rich is also in the news as he and "Big Kenny" Alphin are back at work together, and not just on another album. They've formed a new venture called "Big and Rich Records," and will release their fifth studio album on the new label in the coming months. The lead single on the new project is "Look At You," which you may have already heard on the radio. Country Hall of Famer Don Williams will release a new 10-track studio album on Sugar Hill Records. Look for "Reflections" to be released March 11th. Tracy Lawrence is enjoying life out on the road again with his "Headlights, Taillights, and Radios Tour." The first leg kicked off in Minnesota last month and runs through April 26th, when the tour wraps in Fort Worth, although more dates could very well be added. Finally, we go Inside The Song with The Black Lillies to hear about their new song "Smokestack Lady."
WANDA JACKSON is widely known and respected as "The Queen of Rockabilly." Jackson is credited with being the first woman to ever record a rock and roll song-"Let's Have a Party" in 1958. In 2009, Jackson was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" and, in 2010, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Awards. Wanda returns to the WoodSongs Stage to celebrate the release of her 31st studio album 'Unfinished Business' produced by Justin Townes Earle on Sugar Hill Records. SHEMEKIA COPELAND has evolved from teenage upstart to one of the most prominent voices in the blues. She's currently the most feted woman in the blues world and actually had a coronation where she was crowned and declared "Queen of the Blues" at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2011. Shemekia earned her crown with a series of high-quality recordings and an unrelenting tour schedule including a memorable performance at the White House in front of an audience that included the President of the United States, sharing the bill with Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, B.B. King and other greats. Her latest is "33 1/3" on Telarc International.
THE GREENCARDS return to the WoodSongs stage with a brand new album called "Fascination" on Sugar Hill Records. The critically acclaimed bands love and respect for country, Americana, blues and bluegrass brought them together in 2003. Theyve already toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, earned the Americana Music Award in 2006 for“Emerging Artist of the Year and in 2008 landed a Grammy nomination (“Best Country Instrumental Performance for Viridian). REID GENAUER is the singer/songwriter behind the New York City rocks and roots based band Assembly of Dust. The band's new album "Some Assembly Required" contains the strongest collection of songs the group has created to date, each expertly crafted tune illuminated by a stellar lineup of guests including Bela Fleck, David Grisman, John Scofield, Mike Gordon (Phish), Richie Havens, Jerry Douglas and Martin Sexton
