Peter Wood emailed about Stubby Shillelaghs: "Hi Mark, I wrote a few years ago about playing the show with my wife in the car on dates and on our wedding day, and now we are expecting our first child. We don't listen to the show together much anymore, but when we go to the Renaissance Faire we played it (just missed you again!) and I put it on when we went for a swim on a summer evening when she wanted music without getting interrupted by YouTube Music ads. Since this year's Renaissance festival she's asked a few times for Tartanic when she's been in the mood for "my" music. Recently I was listening to a different podcast that plays novelty songs around a theme (Bitslap with KBC if you're curious), and the theme of the week was Drinking, so of course some Celtic - sounding music came up, and for part of a set I thought I was listening to your show! Of the two songs in particular that got me confused, the first was the Vodka Song by Stubby Shillelaghs (https://youtu.be/h9YRbJSbPw0) which I'm unsure if it or the band have ever been played on your show. It was followed by Sober on St. Patrick's Day, and at first I thought I might have heard it on your show, but then when it got going I realized it wouldn't have fit in on your family friendly show. Turns out it's by Psychostick. I know you've got ties to the FuMP collective so you're probably already aware of it. The Vodka Song at least would be a fun one to play if you've got the permission." Patrick Rieger emailed photos from Ohio Renaissance Festival: "Hi Marc, My family and I, along with our friend Chenna from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, three days of faire. Ohio is a big faire with plenty of celtic musicians, but even with three days we didn't see them all. We did see Captain John Stout (aka Richard Brentar), Donal Hinely, The Harper and the Minstrel, The Toasted Clover, The Jackdaws, Bettina Baudville, Seán Nós, and The Lady Victoria. I had never heard of a nose harmonica until I met Bettina Baudville; that is what she is playing in the photo. Also I never heard celtic music played on a ukulele until I met The Toasted Clover. Donal Hinely was featured on the Renaissance Festival Podcast years ago when you were still a host, but until this year I had not seen or heard him in person." Despite three long days of working the faire, Victoria was able to join us for a quick dinner one night. And before the weekend was done, the four of us already planned to go back next year."
A soundscape from Russalka beach, Tallinn, as jackdaws angry at us walking through their low tide feeding area circle above us angrily. We then listen to waves gently breaking and head back up the beach to the main road, as the sounds of nature give way to those of vehicle noise and pollution. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I feel like I have been slacking this summer sending you pictures after having sent so many. Celtic Pittsburgh hasn't been doing much the past few months though we do have plans in the works for an event in October. Meanwhile, the renaissance festival season for my family and I started when we attended the Great Lakes Medieval faire the weekend of July 27 and 28. It was a great weekend, and we needed time away from the daily routine. With life so busy for everyone we hardly see friends anymore, and this was a chance to see many of them. We were happy to find that our friend Captain John Stout, aka Richard Brentar, has returned to Great Lakes after having been absent for a few years. I'm not sure what I enjoy more, his music or his stories, he always has lots of great stories to tell. We also saw the Jackdaws, Celtic Mayhem, and Michael Manderen. Sadly we didn't make the shows of Menagerie Music this year but we did manage to catch up with Lisa from that duo. My family and I plus a couple of friends went to see John McCann and Hamish at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle in Pittsburgh on August 3. These two are a lot of fun and have great energy, and get the place jumping. I have seen them for 15 years, starting when they were part of the Corned Beef & Curry Band. Sadly that band broke up when one of the three decided to explore other musical paths. I'll be sending more pictures of Celtic musicians come September after trips to two more ren faires. Until then, slainte!" Cheryl Arvio emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, Sorry these photos aren't better, but this is Socks in the Frying Pan from Friday night's show at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. Brilliant, as they always are! Bummed that they are not playing Milwaukee Irish Fest this year, but happy we got to see them (and pick up their new CD) in our hometown. Best,"

A straight and stony path heads through open country, towards the sea. Beside the track, amongst land in-between, a tree. Lone and leafy. Like a sentry. Exposed and standing. It watches the sea birds. Hears their wide and freeing calls. Feels summer gusts of salty air. And listens, to a distant thrum. A vessel. At sea. Slowly passing. It's daytime. Rain clouds are moving overhead. Loose stones lie along the narrow track, wettening, and darkening, and waiting, for the first feet of the day. In the hedgerow, the tall grasses wave on the edge of golden fields with sculptured hay bales resting. Sheep graze. Jackdaws fly, against a slender band of ocean grey. Time passes. From within the tree, raindrops are landing amongst broad green leaves. This is how the world sounds from the Creel Path, a track that runs from Coldingham to St Abbs on the east coast of Scotland. The route has a history going back a thousand years. In bygone times, fishermen used it to trudge to their gruelling work. We left the microphones alone to record in the only useful tree we could find on this stretch of the path. It looked out towards the sea, about a quarter of a mile away. The same view for 1000 years.
My guest is Lucy Hunter, a multi-hyphenate if there ever was one: creative director, garden designer, floral artist, stylist, photographer, teacher, author, botanical dyer…the list goes on. Based in North Wales in the UK, Lucy is, at root, a restless creative who is always adding to her list of projects and modes of expression. She shows us how useless labels can be in a creative life, and how generous our output becomes when we do away with them. Her book, The Flower Hunter: Seasonal Flowers Inspired by Nature and Gathered from the Garden, was published in November of 2021. I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop with Lucy, Gabriela Salazar, and Max Gill this past March, and saw first-hand her creative force at play. From design notes to photography demonstrations, her energy and engagement with attendees and their work was simply amazing. I'm so happy to welcome her here today. Lucy will have another whirlwind tour of workshops in the coming months, including one in October with TJ McGrath in New Jersey. Next year, she will return to New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and New Orleans in March, and Provence in April. You can receive up-to-date information on dates and registration on her website and IG. Links in the show notes, below. The haunted armchair, have we found banksy, a record breaking bungee attempt and how do Jackdaws communicate?
In this episode I take a look at the small wild in my weekly diary from the 6th to the 12th June, 2022 This week the heat returns, as does bat. Jackdaws take to visiting the feeder and stealing the fat balls. Ox eye daisies take over the landscape, roses of all kinds bloom and the first cherries begin to turn red.
Shadowy black figures have either appeared or invades dreams of people for many years. We look at these dark spectres and discover some of the secrets of Shadow People. Plus the haunted armchair, have we found banksy, a record breaking bungee attempt and how do Jackdaws communicate?
Scientists studying 'clatterings' of Jackdaws, discover seeds of primitive democracy. The birds gather by the hundreds, and when it's time to abandon their position en masse, the exodus is preceded by a crescendo of chattering among the clattering. What can we learn about democracy if we follow the science of Jackdaw birdocracy? Working on a sound project for a friend. I have to disconnect the intro vocals from the music instrumental as the levels are so wildly different. To bring up the vocal crushes the music and to lower the music makes the intro vocal too low to hear. Reaper DAW makes that able to be done this way! And YES! I can reconnect them after all is completed! episode two hundred and eight-b / because *you * demanded it &, frankly, because i am always delighted to share recordings of jackdaws.
On the edge of the Bayford Pinetum in rural Hertfordshire, in view of the surrounding farmland, there's a young birch tree, growing in a secluded hollow. In early September the foliage here was humming with late season bees, feeding on ivy. Now in late October, the land is rain sodden and the dell is flooded waist deep. Rooks caw and kaah, from high in the treetops. The air is alive with the watery sibilances of rushing winterbournes. Flocks of jackdaws tchack tchack over the claggy brown fields, ploughed over since our last visit. The occasional train slides smoothly through the forest, on the line that links Hertford North with London. Propeller planes hum over on their weekend flights. Jets pass, muffled in the cloud. High leaves rustle gently in the cool autumn breezes. They haven't got long to fall.
Hello there, my name is Danny Yeoman, wild bird expert for Pets Corner and developer of Peter & Paul bird foods. Welcome to the next of a number of podcasts detailing some of the amazing birds that we see and feed in our gardens. Every couple of weeks we’ll be looking at a different bird and this week we’ll be looking at the Brad Pitt of the bird world… the sensational Jackdaw. For more information regarding Peter & Paul Wild Bird Foods, please check out the Peter & Paul website at: www.peter-and-paul.com or pop into one of our wonderful Pets Corner stores and the nearest store to you can be found at the Pets Corner website at: www.petscorner.co.uk
A Jackdaw, a black bird a little smaller than a, crow thought himself too good for his companions. " They say that clothes make the man, " he told himself. " I must stop going around in this dull black outfit." Finding some bright feathers that a peacock had shed, he stuck them all over himself. "Now," said the Jackdaw, " I am well dressed. All he strutted like a peacock across the lawn. But the birds were not deceived, They mocked him and, when he continued to parade in his borrowed plumes, pecked at him until all fine feathers were torn off. "I must have made a mistake, " he said ruefully, " I ought to go back and stay with my own kind." But his own kind would have none of him. The other Jackdaws refused to let him join the flock. " You have given yourself too many aires," they said. " We were not good enough for you yesterday. Now you are not good enough for us. I listen to the podcast on the bus and while I paint. Absolutely amazing. I love that there’s someone who appreciates the artists and music like this. Keep doing you!!" Simon Dillon emailed a photo: "Hello Marc. Although over month ago, this photo shows me driving back from Canberra to my home town Bendigo (700km) while listening to your podcast. Myself and my friend, and fellow musician, Keven McCarthy had just spent the Easter long weekend at the Australian National Folk Festival presenting “Songs From The Australian Tradition” session on each day of the festival. Australia has many traditional songs. Many of these songs use traditional Irish melodies or are even parodies of traditional Irish songs. The Nation Folk Festival was one of 3 festivals the Kevin and I attended in South Eastern Australia over 17 days around Easter. We started at the Lake Cullulleraine Music Festival, then the National Folk Festival and ended up at the Koroit Irish Festival. By the time I arrived back home, we had covered 2800 km and listened to many Irish and Celtic Music Podcasts, the quintessential road trip podcast. Keep up the great work. 16:13 - "Seven Stars, The Sloe" by Mitchell & Vincent from The Preservation of Fire 19:18 - "Celtic Tiger" by Ciunas from High Time 22:59 - Ruben Lopez emailed a photo: "I heard the podcast #393, and was drawing. Here's the drawing. Have a good one." Alexander Randall 5th emailed a photo: "Hey Marc: I put your sticker on my car... I should put one on the boat, but only fish and mermaids would see it..." Conor Coll emailed: "Hey Marc, Just replying to let you know I received the music you sent and I am currently listening to them, still trying to decide between my favourite! As an Irish man I have been hearing Celtic music all my life and it takes me back to a lovely atmosphere when I listen to these tracks. Recently, I have been following a band which I had done a little camera work with in the past, The Ronan Gallagher Band. They are very talented and are from the region I come from, so I am a big fan of their music. They are what inspired me to look for more traditional music which lead me to this newsletter." Submit music to the podcast at 4celts.com. 25:00 - "Eoin O'neill Has Gone To Clare" by Kennedy's Kitchen from The Whiskey of Truth 30:25 - "Lady Louisa Gordon's Strathspey / The Highlands of Banffshire / The Merrymaking" by Alasdair Fraser & Tony McManus from Return to Kintail 34:50 - Marshall Blosser emailed: "Greetings Celtfather, I've been listening to your podcast for well over a decade. We've circled around nearby cities, but never met. You moved to New Orleans just as I moved from there to the Mississippi gulf coast. And now you are in my old stomping grounds of Atlanta. My family is moving from the Mississippi gulf coast to the eastern most city in North America (St John's NL) so my wife can get her PhD in analytical chemistry. (I know you understand about moving to support your wife) We will be driving there mid December (all 54 hours of it). Apart from episode 421 the long drive - that's an understatement - we would like to have a few CDs to pass the time on the road. I know there is a large Celtic music scene up there. Do you know of any St John's or Newfoundland Celtic artists that we could buy to support and listen to on the way there? Thanks muchly, P.S. I am an aspiring writer and your podcasts have inspired several stories (now if I could just get published) Txs again. Keep the Celtic light burning, in all its colors" Marshall Blosser emailed: "Marc, I have enjoyed your podcast for over 12 years. The variety of music you bring to this show never fails to inspire and amaze me. The fact that you follow the roots of the music and the tendrils of its influence show just how connected the world is and how music is one of those things that can unite everyone. You understand and respect that musically there is no one Celtic musical voice. But rather that it is a rich and varied chorus of voices that make up that sound. I applaud the fact that you are seeking musicians and tunes for a Celtic LGBTQIA+ Pride special next year. The fact that you stand for the diversity that makes this music so touching and valuable is wonderful and so needed everywhere. Peace and may you never lose your laughter, your joy or your autoharp Marshall Blosser" 38:08 - "Keys to the Castle" by Kellswater Bridge from The Proof Is in the Pudding 42:32 - "Hail to the Autumn" by Captain John Stout from Love Abides 46:35 - James Cope emailed: "Hi Marc,Your ebook is a wonderful gift, thank you. I see the changes in the music business, some beneficial, some not so much. Your ideas and knowledge help me as a long time, and older generation musician “unpaid Professional” (mostly) to find where I can land and have the best impact on the art form. Being upbeat in these changing times is a choice and you are an inspiration. As a friend of mine once said, “Damn! Jim you have made something from nothing!” So…. Damn Marc!! you have made something from nothing. Thanks again." Melinda emailed: "Marc, I have subscribed to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast - I am still listening to shows from years ago, which was where you played the Joss song, and the "Don't Drink with Hobbits" song, which I LOVE! Shared it with my son who just cracked up with me. We are in El Paso - as far West as you can get! Have not been to any of the festivals in Texas, but go to Phoenix each year to enjoy the Ren Fest there. Have been to the Ren Fest in Bonner Springs, KS, in MD (think they shut that one down, but it was huge and wonderful!), and AZ. Actually, I am still listening to your podcasts when you still lived in Austin, so didn't know that's not where you lived now :) Would love to see you live. Will have to make sure to listen to the more up to date podcasts to get your latest events - or check your website. Keep up the great work! For ages my wife and I aspired to visit Australia and New Zealand. Being two unabashed geeks, we could not make a trip Down Under without dropping in for a tour of Hobbiton. What an amazing day it was conjuring up the feeling that, at any moment, Sam, Frodo or Bilbo might emerge to challenge all of us interlopers in The Shire. While that particular encounter didn’t happen, I did get to talk up the podcast to fellow tourists plus our guide in response to their questions regarding my catchy and quite fetching t-shirt. Hopefully, you’ll pick up a few new worldly fans as a result. I’ve been a devoted listener to the podcast for many years and credit multiple episodes for enriching and expanding my collection of Celtic music. At last count, some 15 artists have joined my growing mix, which all came about only because you featured them in an episode after they submitted their hopes, ambitions and livelihood for consideration. Thanks to you and all the incredible indie Celtic artists for providing us a way to connect and support what we love. In closing, here’s an idea to ponder. What about a future Celtic Invasion Vacation to New Zealand? After all, Dunedin in the South Island has a mighty strong Scottish heritage and the Celtic spirit is alive and well I hear. Not to mention Hobbiton beckoning away on the North Island. A bit ambitious perhaps but it would be up there in the Trip of a Lifetime category, which I can definitely vouch for. My best to you, your family and all the fans in the 2019 new year. Sláinte! When I travel the world I can still listen to my celtic music. A few shows back, you featured Bangers and mash. well they’re playing near my hometown. in fact playing for two weeks just a five minute drive from my house. thank you for keeping me a contact such wonderful bands" Rachel Bryant emailed: "Marc, Just dropping you a line to say how much I'm enjoying all your podcasts!! This time of year, I especially appreciate holiday music that is different (and better) than what I'm forced to hear in public. Today, I am cleaning the house ahead of company, and enjoying the music and a very thematic beer, pic attached. I wish I could mail you some... maybe it's available in your area? I highly recommend this beer. I try to wear my podcast shirt so I can spread the word! I made a new group of friends that way just a week ago, and we swapped stories of our favorite music venues and Irish/Celtic festivals. Happy Holidays to you and your family!" Regarding voting, although all your featured musicians are wonderful, when asked to vote for a specific episode's featured musician, perhaps asking to vote for that particular/featured song would be more appropriate? By that I mean, I have gone back & searched the bands featured but found 2 or 3 songs as my personal favourites. Absolutely no offence to the great bands but I wouldn't go as far as voting them as my favourite bands, rather songs :) Also, what do you think about either as the final episode of the year or the first episode of the year, featuring the top rated songs of the year, voted by the listeners? Anyway thank you again and I promise to become a paid subscriber once I have some income. Thank you so much! I use them on my running playlist. I have your podcast to thank for where I am today. My wife’s family is Scottish and Irish. I am of German heritage. After attending several St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with them, I really started to listen to the music. I stumbled upon your podcast shortly thereafter. I was a casual listener for a number of years. After the economic collapse of 2008, I found myself without a job. I went back to school to become a nurse and found that I needed to learn how to speed read in order to keep up with the assignments. I used the jigs and reels in your podcast to help keep me on tempo and keep my speed up. Fast forward several years later.... My daughter wanted to take dance lessons. My mother in law told her that if we enrolled her in Irish or Highland Dance she would pay for lessons. My daughter settled on Highland Dance and we found a group that offered lessons. It was a pipe and drum band with a dance troop. They also offered bagpipe lessons for free. After listening to your podcast for several years, my love for the music had grown so much that I jumped on the opportunity to learn the bagpipes. I now have become an active member of the band, performing for gigs and the competition team, but I also have branched out on my own as a solo piper. I look forward to your podcast every week. I just listened to the "Summer Road Trip #361", and I heard a Brasilian band, Braia! They have almost the same musicians of the band I mentioned. Here follows some other names I remembered, mainly with flute or Whistles on their songs: Kernunna (BR), Tuatha de Danann (BR) , Braia (BR) , Flook, Luar na Lubre, MuteFish, Thanks for your very nice mood, always, and for your inspiration! And find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon. I want to start by sending out my heartfelt condolences to the Jewish community in Pittsburgh. I'm so sick of the hate that inspires these attacks. It reminds me of the attacks the Irish suffered when they first came to America. That hate is a plague. So I wanted to send out my Celtic solidarity for that community and all the disenfranchised communities who similarly suffer. We are here for you. I wanna thank you so much for listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. There are other podcasts sharing Celtic music. And they are fantastic. In fact, if you know of any Celtic podcast that's worth listening to, drop me an email. I'd love to share it with listeners. You are here because we're doing something a little bit different. We focus on independent Celtic music. These bands don’t have huge financial backers. They don’t have record labels. Working together, we are helping them live a dream. We are part of something bigger. So thank you for supporting this podcast and my dream to create an inclusive Celtic community. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. But I am not a fan of corporate influence. Certainly not in politics, but also not in the music I create and share. That’s one of the reasons that the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast supports independent Celtic musicians. I want to help the artists who don’t have a record label or a giant production company behind them. They are doing everything themselves. Your support of this podcast helps with that mission. This show is listener supported. Instead of trying to find advertisers, I've decided to let your generosity fund the creation, production, and promotion of the show. You'll get episodes before regular listeners, discounts on merch, and when we hit a milestone, you get extra special episodes, including a bonus episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast that will come out this month. Thank you Squirrel whisperer! — in Dallas, Texas." Mark Albright emailed: "Marc, Last year, when I upgraded my iPhone, I opened the Irish and Celtic Music podcast and noticed it defaulted to the very first episode. I looked through what was played and unplayed, noticed my listening has been sporadic at best, and decided I would start at the very beginning and go up until the most recent podcast. Well, a week and half ago, I got caught up. I've been listening to your podcast while cooking dinner, while cleaning my apartment, while driving to and from work. I also have it on when I've traveled up north and back, proving the podcast makes a great travel companion. You name it, you and the music has been in the background. Along the way, I've Favorited the Christmas music podcasts which has further proved the best way to listen to Christmas music is to have it played on Celtic instruments. But the biggest story I want to share involves your Celtic Music Workout specials. I started listening to the first one when, completely by chance, when I went to the gym and worked the elliptical. It was a trip! The podcast got my heart rate up and kept me motivated to keep on going. I shared those two podcasts with my friend Roxanne, my nephew and niece-in-law - all of whom are long distance runners. I also shared them with the managers of the gym that I go to. They got a bang out of listening to them and liked how the music kept the momentum up throughout the podcast. So, if you are ever inspired to create any new Celtic Music Workout podcasts, please do so. They are appreciated! Keep up the great work on the podcast. It's greatly appreciated...well, at least by me. Slainte!"

I’ve been listening to the Jed Marum tribute during my just completed journey. Thought you might be interested in the following. Jed’s song is a variation of Stonewall Jackson’s last words. Already I miss Jed and am glad you highlighted his music. Another song, Come Back Katy, is not exactly Celtic but close and captures the sheer joy of his music. The video on YouTube is pretty good also." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqeyr-Kg280&feature=youtu.be

Welcome to the all new Geek Pub Songs. I say "new" but in all honesty, it's the same as the old Pub Songs Podcast but with a shiny new title and a new format. I changed to the title to fit a new niche. Yes, this show features a lot of Celtic music. As I am the host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I get a lot of awesome Celtic music. So you can expect that. But I wanted a title that better fits my music as well. Most of my original music is Geek Pub Songs. So I decided to make that the new focus. In this show, you will hear Celtic music and Geek music mixed together. You'll also get a sneak peek at my new album of music inspired by Firefly. Yes, my album of Browncoat drinking songs called As Long As I'm Flyin' comes out on March 6, 2018. So I want to share that music with you. Now the first section of each show will be the theme of the show. No telling what will pop in during the second set. But for now, I have some hopeful love songs that share. If you enjoy this show, LIKE it, SHARE it, post in the comments, or tell a friend. Then subscribe to the podcast and my mailing list at http://pubsong.net/ This week in the pub, you'll enjoy music from Melanie Gruben, Serious Kitchen, The Elders, Jiggy, The Blibbering Humdingers, The Jackdaws,The Gatehouse Well, Dan the Bard, The Founding, and of course, Marc Gunn. I first heard the song "Bean Phaidin" when I first took Gaelic lessons years ago. I love the melody, but I never really learned the lyrics. Now I feel like I've been missing out! Here's the lyrics. Last week, I posted an interview with my fellow hobbit musician, Samantha Gillogly, on the Celtfather Music & Travel podcast. You can find a link to that interview in the shownotes. Incidentally, Samantha has a new band called Revival that is now crowdfunding a new album on indiegogo. If you haven't heard yet, I am performing every Thursday in February at 11 am on my Facebook Live page. It's free show. I'll play about five songs on different themes. You can watch past ones there, or find individual song videos on my YouTube channel. I'm also playing this Friday, Feb 16 at Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co. in Alabaster, AL at 8 pm. I'm sharing Sci Fi Drinking Songs. If you can't make that, join me on Sunday, Feb 18th on Concert Window. I hope you will join me. March 6 is the official release of my Firefly CD. But in the meantime, you can get the Firefly Drinking Songs songbook as well as the Sci Fi Drinking Songs songbook in my merch store on Bandcamp. And since Valentine's Day just happened and you might be in the mood for love, I posted a beautiful Celtic Love sticker in the store as well. It is two cats beautifully bound together in a Celtic heart knotwork. It was designed by Ingrid Houwers. And best of all, you'll also be able to download my Celtic Love compilation, including two unique songs. The sticker is only $5. Bean Phaidin Lyrics It's a pity that I am not, that I am not It's a pity that I am not Páidín's wife It's a pity that I am not, that I am not And the woman he has is dead I would go to Galway, to Galway I would go to Galway with Páidín I would go to Galway, to Galway And I would return home with him in the boat I would go to the Clifden market And into Béal Áth in the Bay I would look in through the windows Hoping to see Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs, Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs and your bones I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out my shoes chasing Páidín I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out the soles and the heels

This simple easy list will do a lot to help your favorite bands get noticed. Someone made an angry comment on Facebook the other day. He asked if I was paying royalties to the artists whose music I was using. One of the tragedies of creating this podcast is that I cannot afford to pay artists for play in the show. I calculated that it would cost over $20,000 per episode if I was to pay the standard royalty rate. Instead, I ask artists to permit me to use their music royalty-free. But I feel bad about just doing that. So years ago, I started donating a portion of the income I earn from compilation CDs and from Patreon to Celtic non-profits, to help support our Celtic community. I just compiled the list of 2017 donations. We donated a total of $3885.57 that went to Celtic non-profits last year. That means we have donated a grand total of over $31,000 to Celtic non-profits since I started donating money in 2004. You can see a breakdown of the Celtic non-profit donations on the website. You can support this podcast by becoming a Patron of the Podcast on Patreon. Will Collins emailed: “Hey Marc (if I can call you that), I only found your podcast at the beginning of October but it's already got its hooks in me. I am a junior in college dual majoring in engineering and math. This isn't as exciting as anyone else, but I listen to the newest episodes and the giant backlog that exists every saturday during my 8-hour study sessions. It really makes the time fly, and I really appreciate all the work you put into making the best podcast around! Hope this finds you merry,“ Thanks Will. I’m so glad you found the show. It’s funny. You say that listening while studying for eight hours isn’t as exciting, but man, I love to hear it. Sure it’s nice to think that we are all traveling in Ireland or Scotland, and listening to the podcast. But the truth is I listen while cleaning house, giving the girls a bath, or playing it to wear out overactive daughters right before bed. Most of our lives are spent in mundane tasks. And while you may think it is uninteresting, personally, I find those mundane pieces of life to be fascinating and inspiring. And it lets me know how to make the show better. So thank you

Most of the major categories of adaptive behavior can be seen in all animals. This course begins with the evolution of behavior, the driver of nervous system evolution, reviewed using concepts developed in ethology, sociobiology, other comparative studies, and in studies of brain evolution. The roles of various types of plasticity are considered, as well as foraging and feeding, defensive and aggressive behavior, courtship and reproduction, migration and navigation, social activities and communication, with contributions of inherited patterns and cognitive abilities. Both field and laboratory based studies are reviewed; and finally, human behavior is considered within the context of primate studies.
