On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of old friends with a ton of records and history between them: Kelley Stoltz and Spiral Stairs. Spiral Stairs—aka. Scott Kannberg—is a founding member of indie-rock kingpins Pavement, a band he formed in Stockton, California with his high school friend Stephen Malkmus. What started as a noisy, ramshackle outfit bloomed into one of the most important and influential bands of the 1990s. Their albums have only grown in stature over the years, getting the sort of deluxe reissue treatment that was once reserved only for the gods of classic rock. And though Pavement split up in 1999, they've reunited twice—and are about to launch a pretty hefty tour of the US and Europe. Outside of Pavement, Kannberg has kept plenty busy releasing music under both his Spiral Stairs moniker and, for a while, as Preston School of Industry. He's had an incredibly prolific last few years, too, releasing three albums since 2017—the latest is the fantastic Medley Attack!!! It was a record born of some hardship, including Covid, worldwide relocations, and most unfortunately, the sudden death of Kannberg's bassist Matt Harris. But those events resulted in what's probably his best solo outing yet. Check out a little bit of the song “Pressure Drop (End of the Hurricane)” right here. Kannberg enlisted the help of several friends in making that record, including the other half of today's conversation, singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz. Stoltz is one of those guys who just has a knack for writing incredibly tuneful pop songs. If they were recorded with more slickness, you might mistake them for radio hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s—I mean that as a high compliment. Stoltz recently released his seventeenth studio album, The Stylist, and it's a great place to start in a catalog that includes plenty of stone classics. Check out “Your Name Escapes Me.” As you'll hear in this conversation—though not necessarily in either of those songs—Stoltz and Kannberg first bonded over a mutual love of Echo & The Bunnymen. Stoltz actually recorded a full album cover of that band's Crocodiles album, and Kannberg joined him on some live shows to perform it. Weirdly, that led to Stoltz, who as a teen worshiped Ian McCulloch, to a brief stint as rhythm guitarist for the British band. Talk about Echo leads to talk about copycat haircuts of their youth, formative years working in record stores, and lots more. And you'll even get to hear two songs in very early stages—one that Kannberg (maybe) wants to bring to his Pavement bandmates, and one that Stoltz has started writing for his infant daughter. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kelley Stoltz and Scott Kannberg for chatting. If you liked what you heard, check out both of their new albums, and of course follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by The Range. See you next time!

Formed 1978, Liverpool's Echo and the Bunnymen evolved into one of post-punk's most legendary and successful units, going from skeletal, drum-machine inflected beginnings to an expansive, colorful neo-psychedelic presence on record and stage, becoming critical faves with such LPs as Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain. The powerful rhythmic section of Les Pattinson and the late Pete De Freitas propelled the lofty poetic lyricisms of singer Ian McCulloch, but guitarist Will Sergeant, the defacto music director of the band, was a creative innovator of the highest order as the band progressed and toured around the world. In tune with both 60's psych/garage roots and forward-thinking freeform guitar style, his sounds both added subtle texture and eruptive passages, and a look at some key live tracks on the show today from mainly 1981-85 illustrates some moments of the Bunnymen's higher ruling. Super excited to have Will visit the show today to talk some history as well as his brand new forthcoming memoir Bunnyman, out in the states next month. It focuses on Will's formative years in post-war Liverpool, his musical DNA and the path to their eventual big break with Sire after establishing themselves on the Eric's club scene with kindred spirits like Julian Cope's Teardrop Explodes. Huge thanks to Will for coming by! As well as thanks to Kelley Stoltz and the folks at Third Man for helping get us together! Archives of other shows: www.brianturnershow.com. This week Susan and Michaela sit down with native San Franciscan Marc Capelle to talk about his artistic career and the city's sunny Mission District. A musician, composer, producer, educator and entertainer, Capelle has performed with the American Music Club, Tommy Guerrero and The West Coast Spiritual Corinthians for decades. He's even had guest performances with artists like The Plastic Ono Band, Rodriguez, Grandaddy, and Kelley Stoltz. Capelle founded SFO's live music program “ You Are Hear,” and remained the programmer and producer of it for nine years. Likewise, Capelle is the founder and musical director of the Red Room Orchestra and the soul and pop dance ensemble Marc & the Casuals. He studied at Columbia College at Columbia University, and since returning to his home city, Capelle has taken advantage of the deep concentration of arts and music that the city offers. Such concentration of the arts can be found in Capelle's own neighborhood, The Mission. In the mid 20th Century, artists and musicians flocked to The Mission to find affordable housing, thus spawning an explosion of creativity that spilled out of every bar and restaurant. Its cultural history fueled the district's colorful character, first by its inhabitance of the city's Native American population, to the Irish, and now to the cherished Latinx community. Today, not only is the neighborhood dominated by an abundance of the arts, but the food, music, and culture has a vibrant Mexican and Latinx flare. There was even a time when Spanish could be heard more than English on the neighborhood's streets. The Mission has had its fair share of challenges, such as increased gang violence in the 80's and rising costs from the growing tech industry of the last 20 years. Nevertheless, it maintains its lively artistic spirit, and who better to tell its story than Mission musician Marc Capelle, who can be found making music on The Mission's streets or at various venues like The Chapel on Valencia St. Check out Capelle's compositions and sound design in the Bay Area art scene documentary “Tell Them We Were Here,” or read more about him on the local news website Mission Local: https://missionlocal.org/2021/06/people-we-meet-a-san-francisco-musician-who-never-left/ Meet Marc Capelle!

Two major areas where generations often do not see eye to eye are religion and music. Some are quite surprised to learn unlikely rock bands sometimes have songs about God, Jesus and the afterlife. In this episode, Martin Tanner gives examples of this, including from the bands Depeche Mode, ZZ Top, the Doobie Brothers, Black Sabbath, Sufjan Stevens, Norman Greenbaum, Kelley Stoltz, Bruce Springsteen Don McLean, and others. Black Sabbath bass player Geezer Butler, raised a strict Catholic, wrote the song "After Forever" suggesting you shouldn't be afraid to let people know you believe in God. Bruce Springsteen in "Jesus Was an Only Son" says there is a trace of divinity within us.
Ed, Pat & Producer Jonah dive into the cesspool that is Wrestling Twitter to answer the tough questions like... While Robyn regales us with the hidden art high jinks of a disgraced Italian dairy tycoon, we spot a cycling gent in a goldenrod beanie - local musician and producer Kelley Stoltz. We invite Kelley, via rickety gondola, up to Altitide to talk stage style, accidental pinhole cameras, stolen land seals, guitar shirt gadgets, and much, much more. It's KunstCapades episode 96!
In the first of a series on music, Paul Krauss interviews singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz. Kelley Stoltz is a prolific artist hailing from San Francisco who is deeply involved in the craft of writing songs and helping others with theirs. Interestingly, Kelley actually plays ALL of the instruments on his songs--having learned to play piano, drums, bass, and synthesizers in addition to his first instrument, the guitar. Kelley has a unique and creative style of song craft and varies the theme of his sound from release to release. In addition to having written a large body of varying styles of rock and folk as well as sincere and existentially significant songs, Kelley has developed an alter-ego in Willie Weird and released two albums of songs, best described as a genre of dark-comedy. Learn more from the source: http://www.KelleyStoltz.com/ In this interview, Kelley discusses both current events as well as his story that led him into a career in music. This is a story of finding one's calling and then finding a way to do it for a lifetime. Psychological concepts that haphazardly made it into the discussion are risk, discipline, calling, dedication, craftsmanship, traveling, community, friendship, and more. When he is not writing and recording music Kelley has been known to make his own lunches, assemble his own electric guitars, support other artists, tell jokes, play drums for Sonny and the Sunsets, record local San Francisco bands, and tour as the rhythm guitarist of Echo & the Bunnymen. And this is only PART of the story--so listen to the entire interview! Also discussed: Detroit (where Kelley is originally from), New York, Jeff Buckley, and Touring Europe. Working Class Audio Session #114 with Monte Vallier!!! Monte Vallier grew up in the Bay Area and launched his musical career by dropping out of high school and moving to London with his band Half Church who he played bass with. After making a record and playing tons of gigs with bands such as The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, and PIL, the band called it quits in 1986. After interning at The music annex and Coast Recorders (Bay Area) Monte built his own studio with engineer Gibbs Chapman that was destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake . It was that same year that Monte started working with the band Swell as a bass player. They Made 5 albums and toured extensively in the 90’s and eventually signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American label in 1993. They made all their our own records starting with a Tascam 38 but then took all the recording advances and bought more gear. They built studios in LA and NYC and in various places in SF to make the records. Monte says he truly learned how to a make a proper record while working with Swell. After Monte left Swell he got busy by producing other people, partnered with Marc Capelle to pursue commercial composition, film scoring, and corporate music and audio post , formed Jet Black Crayon with Tommy Guerrero and toured a bit, making 3 albums then working on 9 solo records for Tommy. Eventually Monte partnered with Jamie Kahn and Nathan Harlow to create a recording space in San Francisco in 2006. Monte has worked with many bands and solo artists including, Tommy Guerrero, Wax Idols, Mark Eitzel, Sean Hayes, Oxbow, Chuck Dukowski and Blackface, Weekend, Mall Walk, Houses of Heaven, Never Young, Wild Moth, Hariguem Zaboy, Terry Malts, The Mattson 2, Young Prisms, Wax Idols, Jet Black Crayon, The Mumlers. Summer, summer, summertime! I threw this one together at the last minute, but I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the mood of this lazy, hazy, hot July. Random Old Records Podcast #33 drifts by in a dreamy blur of psychedelic moods, shimmering reverb guitar, and loping dance beats, with a mix of new and old tracks. If you're one of those people who are melting in this punishing 100+ degree heatwave rocking the midwest, and just want to sit around in a dark room getting lifted all day, this is the podcast for you!Episode #33 kicks off with the all-time classic opening medley from the debut LP by The Soft Machine, a towering groove filled with stunning drums from Robert Wyatt, screeching organs, and slow-burning instrumental fury, and goes into some screaming garage psych from The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees, then a Brit-psych style workout from The Paperhead, who put out one of the best LPs of the year on Trouble In Mind a few months back. I've been raving about them ever since, and now I'm SUPER-PUMPED that they're playing a free show at one of the best new venues in Cincinnati, MOTR Pub, on July 27th. If you're anywhere close, come check it out! Also, check out the perfect lo-fi 60s psych vibe of Jeffrey Novak on this episode of Random Old Records. He just so happens to be the producer of The Paperhead LP, and will be guesting on keyboards on their tour. Sweet deal!Elsewhere, you'll hear dreamy electronic-psych tracks from Washed Out, Hype Williams, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and more chill jams from the likes of Pure X (AWESOME new LP), Seapony, Sic Alps, White Fence, Blouse, and Kelley Stoltz. There's classic tracks from The Kinks and Matching Mole, plus a few more surprises to round things out. Hopefully y'all dig it!
