Blake Flayton, co-author of "10 Things Every Jew Should Know Before They Go to College: An Illustrated Guide"
In 2018, Einat wrote an essay about the riots that were shaking the ground of the border between Israel and Gaza. Einat understood then that the unrest wasn't about just better living conditions -- they were an expression of the desire to "return" to Israel -- violently. Then, Blake Flayton joins for a conversation about Jewish/Palestinian appropriation in Yafo bookstores.
In this episode, Einat discusses her topic of expertise: the Palestinian "right of return," which, as we have covered many times, is not a "right" enshrined anywhere in international law, nor would it be, for many people, a return. What do Western states not understand about this concept? Plus: a new addition to The War of Return, post-October 7th, and a conversation with Blake Flayton on the failings of Prime Minister Netanyahu and proposals for Gaza's future.
This week we welcome returning guest and the youngest person we know, Blake Flayton, to talk about his new book: 10 Things Every Jew Should Know Before They Go to College. We talk to Blake about how to win over Gen Z (with social justice!), whether or not we should we be gatekeeping the the antisemitism discourse, and why we don't want to see anymore Holocaust movies….for now.You can follow Blake on Substack, X and Instagram, check him out calling out campus antisemitism in The NY Times before it was cool, and of course buy the book - everyone should read it, not just the kids! In this episode, recorded at the end of December 2024, Einat examines the arguments of Peter Beinart, a Jewish columnist in a favor of a one, non-Jewish state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and of resettling Palestinian "refugees" from the 1948 war inside of Israel. Then, Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss "Holocaust envy."
In this episode, Einat reads two short essays concerning the 2020 Trump Peace Plan for Israel/Palestine, which offered the Palestinians a state. Why did many even on the Israeli left support the proposal that was deemed inadequate? Then, Blake Flayton joins the conversation to dissect if the two-state solution is really dead, and what, for the time being, can serve in its place.
In this episode, Einat sheds light on "the new Zionists," the wave of young, courageous Jews in the Diaspora who are pushing back against anti-Zionism, the new form of antisemitism. These Jews understand that nothing will ever be good enough for those demanding they give up a key part of their identity. Then, Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss the cascading hatred on college campuses after the October 7th massacre and how best to combat it.
In this episode, Einat presents a concept that some westerners have a hard time understanding: although Jews make up the numerical majority in the State of Israel, they perceive themselves as the minority, and although Arabs in the State of Israel are the numerical minority, they perceive themselves, looking at the region at large, as very much in the majority. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss the Mizrahi identity and Arab governance.
In this episode, Einat co-writes with two young Arabs from the UAE about the possibility of a Muslim form of Zionism, a Middle East that embraces Israel. For this new generation, wars against the Jewish state can be seen as wasteful and a distraction. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins to discuss Muslim society within Israel and the current war with Iran.
In this episode, Einat makes the case for why the most obvious policy for management of the conflict is continued security control between the river and the sea, but a halt (or removal?) of civilians in areas where Israel does not exercise sovereignty. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation with insights on the current Israeli government's agenda, and the possibility of getting a new government.
In this episode, originally published as a short social media post, Einat explains the one thing that westerners cannot seem to grasp: Palestinians are, in fact, adults, who are capable of making adult decisions. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to go more into detail about this mental blockage and its consequences.
In this episode, Einat explores a problem that has been plaguing the Jewish people for decades: what to do when the entire world appears to be against you? How does one combat a web of lies so well established and prolonged? How can it be possible that the entire world can be wrong and the Jews right? Perhaps we should take inspiration from Ahad Ha'am, who published his essay "Chatzi Nechama" in response to the medieval blood libel. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation for an update on current events.
In this episode, Einat makes the case that Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, is the one holiday specifically for atheist Zionists, those who founded the State of Israel by rebelling against traditional Jewish theology. Whereas other holidays have been subjected to nationalist re-interpretation in the Zionist context, such as Passover, Purim, and Hanukkah, Independence Day needed no such re-imagination. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the discussion to expand more upon the meaning of atheist Zionism, atheist Judaism, and the future of religion and state in Israel.
In this chapter, Einat analyzes why the Arab world is perceived among the West to be an abject failure -- in governance, democracy, technology, sustainability, and more. But then, we shift to a model of Arab success: the Gulf states, who have recently normalized relations with Israel. The center of the Arab world, culturally, ideologically, and economically, has shifted away from Beirut and Damascus to Dubai. What does this mean for Israel and Jews around the world? Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss the Abraham Accords, liberalization in Muslim countries, and more.
In this episode, Dr. Wilf investigates how Americans, and many westerners, view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: through the lens of western race relations, the Israelis as "white" and the Palestinians as "people of color," which may be thought of as a form of neo-colonialism. Or, maybe, "a Disneyland of hate." Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss how this ignorance came to develop amongst those who object to western constructs, and the symbolic power of good versus evil in thinking about the conflict.
In this episode, Einat argues that if the Americans were to open a consulate to the Palestinians deep within East Jerusalem, it would advance the cause of a two-state solution. What does nothing to encourage two states is maintaining embassies in Tel Aviv, a wonderful city, but decidedly not Israel's capital. Neither does it make sense to have consulates for the Palestinians in West Jerusalem, as the capital of Israel is not "neutral territory," as much as the United Nations would like to believe. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to question the claim that Jerusalem is "united" and whether or the city can boast a liberal, democratic society.
In this episode, Einat interrogates the progressive hatred of Israel, and asks: is animosity toward Jews ever due to Jewish behavior? Or perhaps it is a reflection of the society itself -- and something failing in its internal structure. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to ask: how does one come to terms with this historical trend in the modern era, in the age of the State of Israel?
A conversation focused on the Israeli government and Israeli-Palestinian relations, featuring panelists Sally Abrams, Rabbi Yishai Fleisher, Blake Flayton, Dahlia Scheindlin, and Bret Stephens, with moderator Liel Leibovitz.
In this episode, Blake Flayton, a writer, student, and activist, welcomes us into his Tel Aviv world. Blake made Aliyah from NYC a year and a half ago, immersing himself in Hebrew and joining protests against the Netanyahu government. His journey is a compelling narrative of growth and resilience.Blake explores personal impacts of antisemitism and nuances of Israel advocacy, promising to challenge your perspectives and delve into the complexities of identity and politics. For those eager to delve deeper into these themes, check out Blake's Substack, “Bourgeois Nationalist," offering more takes from Tel Aviv, about the wider Jewish world from a liberal Zionist perspective.Connect with Blake on Instagram and Twitter: @blakeflayton Recorded on February 21 (Day 137).(Some of) Blake's Recommended Reads:“The Cool Kids,” Dara Horn“A Day For Atheist Rebels Taking Charge Of Their Own Destiny,” Dr. Einat Wilf“Peter Beinart's Grotesque Utopia,” by Shany MorThanks for tuning in!
In this episode, Einat reviews "Who Do You Think You Are?" by Yuli Novak, founder of Breaking the Silence, an organization which seeks to inform Jews in Israel and people of all stripes around the world about the occupation of the West Bank. But is there really some big secret being kept from us? Einat proposes that there is something really quite childish (and even spiritual) in learning more about Israel and thinking oneself "liberated" for coming to alternative conclusions. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss solutions to the conflict, and why they are notably absent from "end the occupation" work.
In this episode, Dr. Wilf takes us back to Durban, South Africa in the summer of 2001 at the World Conference Against Racism, which notably descended into an antisemitic hate fest that echoed the debate surrounding UN Resolution 3379, declaring Zionism as a form of racism, in 1975. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins to discuss the recent trial against Israel at the International Court of Justice and whether or not it is even sensible for Israel to participate in international bodies.
In this special episode, Dr. Wilf reflects on the "Zionism and anti-Zionism" course she taught at Georgetown University several years ago, and how one student had told her that the course was more helpful than "hours of therapy." What did she mean by that? Why do young Jews feel that Zionism has therapeutic powers, and is this phenomenon new? Then, writer David Hazony discusses his new book which incudes this essay by Dr. Wilf, Jewish Priorities, followed by a further conversation on the piece with columnist Blake Flayton
In this episode, Dr. Einat Wilf reads an essay on the strong reactions in Israeli society upon the passing of the controversial "Nation State Law" in 2018. The debate around the language and the context of the law are more relevant than ever in 2023. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss both sides of "from the river to the sea" and the disconnection between American and Israeli Jews.
In this episode, Dr. Wilf discusses the differences between Jews who feel comfortable with having power, versus those who don't. What is the relationship between morality and power, progressivism and power? Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins to discuss Christianity's influence on Jewish communities and the rise of anti-Zionism.
In this 2021 op-ed, Dr. Wilf argues that choosing to provide millions more in aid for UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, does nothing but give cover to the dream of undoing Israel by giving political legitimacy to the demand to settle millions of Palestinians within sovereign Israel. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to discuss both Biden and Trump's relationship with Israel in a time of war.
In this episode, Dr. Wilf discusses the relationship of both women and Jews with power. Both feminism and Zionism broke the traditional understandings of the "proper place" for women and Jews. Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the episode to discuss why young progressives don't understand this concept, and the relationship between Zionism and feminism within Israel itself. This episode was recorded before the events of October 7th.
As Israel still grapples with the traumatic events of October 7th, Dr. Wilf discusses the difference between constructive ambiguity and constructive specificity as they relate to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Is it better to tackle issues like refugees and borders as soon as we get into the room, or is it better to resolve the minor issues first? Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins the conversation to speak about the problem of "moral narcissism" in discussions about the conflict.

In this episode, Einat reads an essay co-authored with Adi Schwartz for Ha'retz in 2018. Wilf and Schwartz discuss why all efforts to transform Gaza, to supply it with the resources needed to better the quality of, life have failed. Then, columnist Blake Flayton and Einat further debunk the myths surrounding Palestinian aid and what they mean for the future of the conflict.

In this episode, marking the thirtieth anniversary of the signing of the Oslo Accords, Dr. Wilf discusses the hope, politics, and disappointment surrounding the agreements. What can Israeli society learn from their failure, should the moment for peace negotiations arise again? Then, columnist Blake Flayton joins to discuss the contemporary discourse regarding Oslo, including recently uncovered and newsworthy revelations.
Dr. Wilf discusses the historical perspective of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, and why his ideas in contemporary Israel are dramatically misunderstood. When it comes to Jewish-Arab relations, is Jabotinsky an icon for the right, or would he align more with Israel's left-wing? Or perhaps, is the answer not that simple? Then, columnist Blake Flayton and Dr. Wilf discuss the ever prominent fault lines in Israel, and why looking to the past may be the best way to prepare for the future.
In this episode, Dr. Wilf discusses the differences between Israel and the United States in their relationship to liberal Judaism. Does Israel need to be more welcoming to reform and conservative Judaism in the face of Rabbinate authority, or perhaps, is the solution more secularism, so each and every Jew can choose to practice as they please? Blake Flayton and Dr. Wilf then discuss the complexities of liberal Judaism and how they relates to Israel's current political climate.
Golda Meir served as prime minister of Israel from 1969 until 1974. Taking control of her country during a period of euphoria after the 1967 Six Day War, Meir was a member of Israel's founding generation. However, Israel's sense of infallibility was shattered after a surprise attack by Egypt and Syria, in what became the Yom Kippur War. Though Israel defeated its Arab neighbours for the third time in 25 years, Meir was quickly accused of complacency and unpreparedness, and resigned in near disgrace just 8 months after the conflict in 1974. But is this fair? Did Yom Kippur, as well as Meir's political style, which quickly became outdated after she left office, invalidate her earlier achievements? Today's episode seeks to shed light on this and more.My guest today is Blake Flayton. Blake is a columnist with the Jewish Journal, an independent newspaper serving the Jewish community of Los Angeles. As well as Golda Meir's career, we discuss the fraught founding of Israel in 1948, and the prospects for the Israeli left, which in recent years has lost ground to an even greater extent than the left in European countries
Dr. Wilf discusses the democratic tradition of Israel and the Jewish people, even in times when inclinations towards pluralism seem most challenged. Then, Blake Flayton and Dr. Wilf discuss contemporary politics in Israel, debates over policy, what the future has in store, and why democracy is the hot topic of the day.
Dr. Wilf discusses the psychological implications of anti-Zionism on Jews in the Diaspora today, from campus, to political organizations, and beyond, and the differences between right-wing and left-wing antisemitism. Then, Blake Flayton and Dr. Wilf discuss Blake's personal experience with anti-Zionism in college, and how it affected him and how it affects many young Jewish people today.

We are honored to host this very special conversation between some of the most thoughtful people who are currently a part of the movement for visibility on behalf of the Jewish community in America. With the persistent and horrific rise of antisemitism across the globe, including the recent synagogue attack in Dallas and the banning of Pulitzer-winning graphic novel Maus in Tennessee, the Gayborhood team felt compelled to provide a platform for several of the Jewish people in our lives who have been our beloved allies and trusted friends. We're thus proud to welcome a star-studded panel (in alphabetical order): Dylan Alban, whose aid work in international non-profits took him around Asia for years before he joined APDS, an education technology company that provides resources to justice-involved individuals across the US; Jordan Daniels, who identifies as a Fat Queer Afro-Jew writer and photographer and who focuses on Queer experiences, anti-racism, belonging for Jews of Color, and Fat activism; Jonathan Lipnicki, movie icon and Jewish activist, whose blockbuster films include the Oscar-winning Jerry Maguire, The Little Vampire, Like Mike, and the Stuart Little franchise; and Broadway actress and singer Jaime Rosenstein, who has graced the stage in the recent Sunday in the Park with George revival and the Wicked national tour. Our panelists discuss a variety of topics, including the many and complex definitions of Jewish identity, their families' generational relationships to America, and their hopes for the future regarding how the Jewish community is depicted in the media. We also dive deep into how we can all be advocates for the Jewish community, not just now but always. Go on Instagram to follow Dylan at @dylra1, Jordan at @johodaniels, Jonathan at @jonathanlipnicki, and Jaime at @jaimero1, and learn everything you can about the Jewish people and organizations highlighted in this week's Gayborhood Watch: the 92nd Street Y, the Anti-Defamation League, Blake Flayton, Eve Barlow, Hila Love, Adam Eli, The Empress Mizrahi, Keshet, the Jews of Color Initiative, the Black-Jewish Liberation Collective, the Jewish-Asian Film Project, San Diego's the HIVE at Leichtag Commons, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, Bend the Arc, Tony Kushner, Wendy Wasserstein, and Theatre Dybbuk. And don't forget to follow @rogerq.mason, @lovell.holder, @miachanger, and @dgonzalezmusic on Instagram for all your Gayborhood updates!
Blake is a freelance writer, a columnist, and new media director for Jewish Journal. He is also the president and co-founder of The New Zionist Congress. They are a group of students, young professionals, professors, thinkers, and leaders from around the world, who believe in Zionism's mission and its continuity today. Blake was a lifelong progressive Democrat, but when he went to college he was met with antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric coming from the same groups which he previously championed. After finding himself in a bit of an identity crisis, Blake managed to find his calling and became a new fresh voice for a younger generation of Jews in America. Jews have a long history of being persecuted for nothing more than holding a different belief. With antisemitic attacks being at an all-time high, we need more brave voices like Blake. I'm happy he came on the podcast for us to discuss some extremely important and relevant topics. Blake and I discussed: What is the future of progressivism? What the New Zionist Congress org is all about The current political atmosphere on college campuses Why Jews are attacked by both sides of the political spectrum What is Pinkwashing? Hiding your Jewish identity when traveling The profound impact summer camp in Oregon had on his understanding of his Jewish identity Populist messaging masquerading as truth The problem with Identity politics Filter bubbles & echo chambers of information on social media And much, much more... Blake Flayton My Take: The highly politicized climate we find ourselves in steals reason and agency from individuals and lumps us all into groups - it's the most tribal inclination humans possess. We need independent thinkers to steer people away from identity politics, political tribalism, and the mob mentality in which we currently find ourselves. How To Start A Podcast Support The Podcast

This week, Blake Flayton disrespects the theme of the podcast both by not rewatching the episode before recording and by bringing an episode that isn't his favorite. Blake joins Ellie and guest host Heather Schnakenberg (from first GOT episode) to discuss the intricacies of the word “bastard,” a conspiracy theory behind the Stark's religion, and the book series 13 year-old Blake wrote that was going to be better than GOT.Episode dedicated to Maddy Felder, The Smart Merchants of Dubrovnik, and Catherine Tate.Thank you to this episode's sponsor, jimo, the app that re-envisions the recommendation. Whether it's the LGBTQ cause, Black Lives Matter, or more recently, the indigenous and native rights causes, anti-Israel activists are somehow always there, pushing their own narrow agenda. How have these groups had the success that they have, and is there any hope at all for a return to a time when liberals and conservatives alike could look to Israel as a reflection of their values - and not as a wedge issue?
