It may never quite have opened its doors in Australia - the closest it came was Singapore - but its local influence on advertising is still remarkable with many of its alumni having built agencies locally.Created four decades ago by John Bartle, Nigle Bogle and John Hegarty, BBH is now owned by Publicis.Sir John Hegarty - who also cofounded Saatchi & Saatchi and TBWA - is behind some of BBH's most celebrated ads. In February he'll be coming to Australia as part of his Business of Creativity course. In this wide ranging conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, Sir John discusses the sliding doors moment early in his career as an art director when he ended up paired with copywriter Charles Saatchi; how a black sheep came to define his career; and the nature of creativity. He also explains his provocative premise that the reason why Sydney is not a great creative hub is because the weather is too good. "A lot of creativity comes out of struggle. You can't sit outside a lovely beach bar and have a beer. You've got to go in and have an idea.”Sir John also argues that the only way for creatives to stay relevant is to stay in touch not just with culture, but with their surroundings. “If you're a creative person, please, will you take those f*****g headphones off? Great creative people are absorbers. They absorb things around them all the time.”He also tackles the separation of media from creative agencies: “one of the greatest mistakes our industry made”.And he shares the anecdote of how his second thoughts about a weak campaign his agency had already sold in, became the acclaimed “Cream of Manchester” ad for beer brand Boddingtons.Further links:* Business of Creativity* Training Day:* The Stormtrooper Scandal* Apple TV: Stones in Exile* Disney+: The Beatles: Get Back* Hegarty on Creativity: There are No Rules* Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson* Backstory book subscriptionToday's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. If you're interested in retail media, don't forget that earlybird tickets are now on sale for the next edition of REmade on October 1. Episode 3 features Tim Riley, one of the most famous writers in our industry.IMAGE OF TIM: http://bit.ly/TimRileyMadMag We say ‘writer’ rather than Creative Director or Head of Copy (both roles he excels at too), because deep down Tim is a man of words. Pithy, witty, cheeky, emotional, funny words. In his career he has written for John Smiths, The Economist, The Guardian, Boddingtons, Sony, Nike, Snickers, Sainsbury’s, winning awards on virtually every account he’s put his pen to. Economist Array: http://bit.ly/36cH6vM This incredible body of work has propelled him to the lofty title of Creative Partner at AMVBBDO …..and yet you’d never know from listening to our chat he is a man with such a revered position. Tim is a humble, funny and disarmingly charming guest who was incredibly open and frank in telling us about his career to date.Jordan Economist: http://bit.ly/2v6mn02 We soon got into The Economist work and how over the past 22 years, Tim has worked as a writer and CD on the account. He told us the story behind the ‘Someone mentions Jordan’ billboard and the circuitous route to the final poster. We’ll let Tim explain more, but as ever, it’s an unpredictable path to getting work out, and this is another great example that lead to one of the most famous Economist posters ever. BONUS IMAGE - MR BLOBBY! http://bit.ly/2NHHiNm However, the main chat was about Tim’s John Smiths billboards when he was at DDB (now known as Adam&EveDDB). JohnSmiths:http://bit.ly/3auCGUrhttp://bit.ly/36gC3Lahttp://bit.ly/2G7bzRGhttp://bit.ly/2tqnwzb This didn’t disappoint either for back story, involving a bottom drawer idea from a MAD magazine that Tim had had for years and magically pulled out to inspire the brilliant irreverent posters.MadMagazine: http://bit.ly/2G7mIShhttp://bit.ly/379oxKk We admire Tim for his honesty and it should give us all hope that the bottom drawer can still yield greatness.Nike Jordan:http://bit.ly/2sFPlmu Thanks again Tim for your spoken words, along with the written ones, that will hopefully inspire our listeners.

In this episode, we’re joined by the founders of two innovative U.K.-based companies, cold brew coffee and oat milk brand Minor Figures and non-alcoholic brewery Infinite Session, who detailed their respective strategies for winning at home and abroad. Launched in 2014, Minor Figures is known for its super-premium beverages, pastel packaging and playful illustrations. The brand is widely available in the U.K. and has a significant foothold in Australia along with a small, but expanding, presence in the U.S. In our interview, co-founder Stuart Forsyth spoke about why he describes the package design as an “exercise in restraint,” and why Minor Figures takes a brand-first approach to marketing. He also discussed how the company is leveraging the U.S. coffee community to build awareness and distribution, and how it’s managing growth in three global markets. Later in the episode, we sit down with Chris Hannaway, the co-founder of Infinite Session, which was launched in 2018. The brand has won acclaim and built a loyal following in the U.K. for its full-flavored beer and lighthearted marketing. In our interview, Hannaway spoke about his background in non-alcoholic beverages and the creation of Infinite Session. He also explained why the products are designed to reach “flex sober” consumers and discussed the metrics for evaluating brand strategy. Show notes: 1:44: Investors Want to Meet You. But Check Your Breath. -- The episode’s hosts riffed on Ray’s Worcester accent, crunched on upcycled chips and discussed the usefulness of Purell and Listerine breath strips at BevNET Live and NOSH Live. They also spoke about effective ways to network with investors at the events and why early-stage entrepreneurs should engage with strategic incubators, including Coca-Cola’s Venturing & Emerging Brands and General Mills’ 301INC units. Later, BevNET reporter Brad Avery offered insight into the recently announced partnership between beer giant Molson Coors and beverage incubator L.A. Libations. 17:05: Interview: Stuart Forsyth, Co-Founder, Minor Figures -- Forsyth met with BevNET CMO Mike Schneider at the 2019 Bread & Jam Festival in London for a conversation about Minor Figures, including the brand’s inception and how the current iteration of its package design was conceived. He also discussed how the company communicates coffee terroir  to consumers and how the team determined the right time to expand into international markets. Later, he explained why he views the brand’s U.S. distribution strategy as “dangerous” and why it maintains a consistent product lineup across all markets. 36:24: Interview: Chris Hannaway, Co-Founder, Infinite Session -- Schneider also sat down with Hannaway at the Bread & Jam Festival where they discussed the genesis of Infinite Session, the brand pillars and growing consumer interest in non-alcoholic beer. Episode Title: "Orchid Fart" OR "Fear and Bonding In Las Vegas" This is a very special episode of Six Pack Double Feature. Today the old boys are tracking down an international diamond smuggling ring and a stolen spacecraft. It’s the James Bond Super Special with DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (1971) and MOONRAKER (1979). Listeners Be Warned: Due to the technical glitches of the this episode, along with the “more than normal” consumption of alcohol by the time they restarted, anytime Nathan refers to a “more grounded” Roger Moore film, and then follows it by saying “The Spy Who Loved Me”, he most certainly meant “For Your Eyes Only.” Blame the Boddingtons, or blame his inability to keep them straight in his own head. Your choice. Here’s that gawdawful song that Country musician Johnny Cash submitted to Eon productions.  Apparently it was going to be the opening for the James Bond Movie, THUNDERBALL (1964). Rumor has it that it was kicked at the last moment and was replaced. The lyrics of Cash's "Thunderball" describe the film's story. I think this may have worked, if James Bond had been a roaming gunslinger located in the Old West. Maybe. But probably not. If you’re interested in reading any of Nathan’s blog posts on James Bond, you can read them here: ReBONDing   This newer version includes the Tangents mini-episode "AN $8 LINE OF METAMUCIL" at the end. Today’s tangents include outtakes of where the guys share their one of their worst alcohol consumption stories, how long movie trailers are in the 1970s, disco Moonraker, and what Roger Moore does when he’s a little backed up.
