In this talk, Megan Clifton (Head of Narrative, Boomtown Fair) will discuss her learnings in her three years holding the storyline, the challenges of managing a truly collaborative fictional world, and how the ground-up model of interactive storytelling continues to find its feet.Boomtown is the largest interactive theatre in the world, aiming to create an accessible, playable space where the audience can imagine new versions of themselves, new futures for themselves, try new realities on for size and become what they've always dreamed of becoming. Starting in 2009, Boomtown has kept a narrative throughline throughout, becoming deeper, more intricate and more multifaceted year-on-year. This talk was recorded at the Immersive Experience Network Summit in October 2024 and is supported by Arts Council England and our industry partners Illusion Design & Construct, Mance Communications, White Light, Deterministic, Immersif, d&b audiotechnik, Scene2, Little Lion Entertainment, Entourage, and Vista Insurance.Discover more content from IEN: https://immersiveexperience.network/articles/ Hosted on Acast. This week we explore how systems of care for performers, backstage workers and audiences can be integrated into both the rehearsal process and live aspects of immersive experiences. We discuss the challenges and developments in creating cultures of care as well as the methodologies and mechanics used to keep everyone involved safe both in the making and delivery of live work.. Our Guests Dan Burman has been an immersive performer, fight director and maker for over a decade. From larger scale maximalist projects such as Secret Cinema and Boomtown Fair, to smaller and more intimate happenings he has honed his craft to integrate systems of care within the chaotic play space of the immersive sphere, both for those who inhabit and make the world, and those who come to play in it. Creative director at IllumiNaughty offshoot Visual Architects, which he founded in 2013, Lefteris Angelidis knows the value in offering audiences original experiences. To that end he has invested in new machinery, brought in more people and grown the company to what it is today, delivering projects for Kendal Calling and Boomtown Fair through to Cirque du Soleil and Puma in the process. At their best, festivals are platforms for personal and communal transformation by creating temporary immersive worlds, ripe with participation and opportunities for growth. Few gatherings do this with the theatrical flair of BoomTown Fair, a choose-your-own-adventure playground in the English countryside. Today on Life is a Festival, visionary leader, Lak Mitchell, shares how his vast team creates a living, breathing town once a year and how why they are now starting again with Chapter One: The Gathering. On the show we discuss English festivals from Glastonbury to the Free Part movement. Lak shares his evolution from crafting speaker boxes to building worlds. We discuss leading large creative teams and tools for staying still in the center of a whirlwind creative process. We talk about Boomtown as political storytelling and their new focus on eldership, indigenous wisdom, and six essential principles. Finally we discuss the decision to reset Boomtown to Chapter One and the new amazement park “Wake the Tiger.” Lak Mitchell is the Co-founder and Creative Director of Boomtown Fair, an independently owned festival that has grown into one of the largest and most celebrate in the UK. After getting his start building speaker boxes for Europe's Free Parties, Lak co-founded Boomtown Fair in 2009. He is also the Co-founder and Creative Director of Wake the Tiger, the world's first Amazement Park in Bristol opening this year. :07 - The essence of an English Festival from Glastonbury to the Free Party movement :14 - Dreamy Lak learns to build speaker boxes :20 - Building a living breathing town :26 - Leadership and worldbuilding :31 - Tools for staying in a still center during the creative process :37 - Boomtown as a political storytelling process :43 - Eldership, indigenous wisdom, and principles :53 - Reseting the Boomtown Storyline to Chapter 1 1:03 - Boomtown's Amazement Park Links Lak Mitchell: https://www.instagram.com/lakmitchell/ Boomtown Fair: https://www.boomtownfair.co.uk/ Wake the Tiger: https://www.comingsoon.wakethetiger.com/ Mac Macartney: https://macmacartney.com/

The brilliant Shosh from 24hr Garage Girls joins Chris Arnold this week for episode 5 of the Thekla Isolation Discs Podcast! DJ, producer, promoter and tour de force Shosh has a fascinating backstory which she kindly shares with us while picking some absolute banging isolation tunes. We hear about her life in bands before discovering electronic music, an emotional journey out to eastern Europe as well as how washing dirty ravers at Boomtown Fair resulted in 24hr Garage Girls, the concept group which regularly sells out clubs all over the country. Warning: this episode features air horns!
Welcome to the very first episode of Thekla's Isolation Discs Podcast. To get things started, host Chris Arnold is joined by the award-winning Bristol lyricist, MC and label owner Gardna! Tune in as Gardna shares some of his favourite tunes, lets us know what he's up to during the lockdown and discusses some of his career defining moments, from supporting Akala as a teenager to playing in front of tens of thousands of people at Boomtown Fair in 2019. Check it out!
Welcome to the first ever episode of Lost in the Maze, the unofficial podcast all about the immersive, interactive, theatrical storyline maze at Boomtown Fair. In episode 1 Mark and Corinne waffle a bit (a lot) about why the Boomtown storyline maze is engaging enough to actually start a podcast about and what's to come from Lost in the Maze over the next few months. This is just the beginning... Next up - what exactly is going on at Area 404?
“Beans on Toast… it’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s English, does what it says on the tin.” Jay McAllister, aka Beans on Toast, is a true English folk hero. You’ll find him at a British festival on a Sunday afternoon, belting out his irreverent songs for worn out ravers. From helping Banksy launch sky lanterns, to extolling the virtues of a bamboo toothbrush, Beans is the paradigm of a festive life that makes a difference. On the show we talk about the long chain of folk heroes and how Beans became a political songwriter. We chat about festival favorites from Glastonbury to AfrikaBurn. We discuss what it means to bring a child into a festival lifestyle and run the whole show as a family. We end the podcast with a track from Bean’s new album called “Take Your Shit Home With You,” which was requested by the organizers of Boomtown Fair to combat rampant tent abandonment at the event. You can purchase his new album, “The Inevitable Train Wreck,” all of his prolific catalogue, and his book “Drunk Folk Stories” from his website. Your purchase will be delivered with love from his Mum and Dad who manage the merch. A huge thank you to all my supporters on Patreon! Thanks to your help, I am over halfway to my goal of covering my monthly expenses for this show: Affinity Mingle, Randy Barnowl, Lea Jinks, Nate Levin, Noah Weston, Quayle Hodek, Tim Chang, Troy Dayton. Proudly hailing from a county that is so backward most people's family trees look more like tumbleweeds. A thoroughbred trio of dedicated Cornish idiots have been quietly paving the musical way for their stalwart countryside kinsmen. Like the blind leading the blind, the Freerange Djs have embarked on a chaotic adventure that is slowly leading to what must be one of the music industries most unorganised rises to fame on record. That said, their unorthodox methods have picked them up some noteworthy accolades along the way including 2 Mixmag ‘Tune Of The Month's, releases on prestigious labels such as Skint Records and 470 real Twitter followers. The Freerange Djs have won lots of awards that are not really worth mentioning and narrowly missed out on some good ones too. With remix work for the mighty Stanton Warriors set for release imminently as well as a delightful summer festival season booked in including their favorites Glastonbury and Boomtown Fair, its looking like these modest idiots could be sailing the good ship Breakbeat at full speed towards some very prosperous rocks in the not too distant future…… For more information on the Freerange DJs visit: https://www.facebook.com/freerangedjs/ https://soundcloud.com/freerangedjs https://twitter.com/freerangedjs Artwork by http://jempanufnik.com/
