Justice reminds us about the importance of community and communion. March 2ndm 2025.
Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is celebrated as a central figure in Christianity, particularly as "Theotokos" (Mother of God), a title affirming that she gave Jesus His humanity while His divinity remained eternal. Her willingness to lay down her life in obedience to God's will mirrors Jesus' ultimate act of vulnerability and love through the Incarnation, illustrating how God became human to dwell among and save His people, offering a profound exchange of love and sacrifice. Flatten the dough slightly and slash a cross into the middle. Earlier this month, Pennsylvania protected more than 22 hundred acres on 32 farms in 18 counties from future development. That brings the total number of farms protected under the farmland preservation programs to almost 6,100 farms protected that make up nearly 614,000 acres in 58 counties. Pennsylvania leads the nation in the number of farms preserved. What does it mean that a farm is preserved? Why is it important to preserve farmland? How much does it cost? What do the farmers get out it? All questions we ask on Monday's Smart Talk. Our guests are Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Farmland Preservation Director Doug Wolfgang and Ben Wenk and his father Dave own Ploughman's Cider in Adams County. Our very first 'Day on the Farm' event was 'evolutionary' as families from across South Texas made a short drive to learn, tour and eat. Aislynn describes her amazing Ploughman's Lunch (farm-to table lunchable) offering and we make Goat Guisada (carne's carne, right?) with leftover goat from the day's goat roast. Toby could at least put all that pickle to a good use and make everyone a Ploughman's...Katie Thistleton is here with Kem and Arielle for our morning debrief - and she's got a lot of responsibility on her shoulders because it's mad chaotic in that villa at the moment. It seems like the main lesson that our Islanders are learning at the moment is 'you don't know what you've got til it's gone'... we're looking at you Toby, Liam, and Tyler...Some of the moves we saw in last night's episode were pulled straight from the Year 8 playbook: texting each other across the room, passing notes and telling everyone you like a girl (but without telling the girl herself). Tbh, kinda obsessed with it. Have we ever seen so many Casa Amor Islanders get pied off in one go before? At this rate, they're all going to start cracking on with each other. It's shaping up to be a very interesting recoupling... and the girls are choosing. It's all to play for in tonight's episode. It's Crush Club day - so we attempt to get you coupled up in real life. If you have a crush that you want us to shout out next week - you can email us at themorningafter@itv.com. While you're there, chuck us your dilemmas and we will get Olivia Attwood to solve it for you tomorrow morning. To be fair, writing a love letter on kitchen roll is probably a good idea - adorable AND absorbent (well, maybe not adorable in Liam's case...)
Cider Fueled Road Trip Day 1 We begin the road trip in New York state on the west side of the Hudson River at Stone Ridge Orchards one of the three farms that is under the umbrella of Hudson Valley Farmhouse Cider. The other two orchards are Breezy Hill, on the east side of the Hudson River and Drumlin located in Milton, NY, on the west side of the Hudson River. I first meet Ted Knight at the Stone Ridge farm shop, who shows me a beautiful view of Stone Ridge Orchards and then I am off with Elizabeth Ryan, a Cornell trained Pomologist and a champion of orchards and farms in the region along with being a cidermaker and so much more via her business Hudson Valley Farmhouse Cider. Ria in the Cider Mobile[/caption] Road Trip Day 2 On ward to Pennsylvania with a stop at Spacetime Mead and Cider Works located in Dunmore. I was so happy to finally have a chat, taste some cheese and tour his front storefront and the backroom cidery with Dan Schreffler That evening I camped in my Cider Mobile and was able to enjoy the fireflies that danced around the campground. Road Trip Day 3 It was a 2+ hour drive to Big Hill Ciderworks in Gardener's Pennsylvannia in Adams County the premier apple growing region for the state. I first met with Ben Kishbaugh who along with Troy Lehman fun Big Hill. Both own their own farms, with Ben's housing the production room for Big Hill and Troy having the new Tasting Room complete with outdoor and indoor seating. Ben took me for a ride around the two farm orchards and then I had a sit down recording with both he and Troy. Later that evening more cider friends showed up for a special event spearheaded by cider enthusiast Erica Jeter. She had set us all up, with a tasting for 5 UK ciders from 5 different producers all working with the same juice. It was magnificent. Road Trip Day 4 From Big Hill I woke up and took off for a 2+ hour drive to Tattiebolge CiderWorks in Acme to meet up with Curt Henry. Curt is cidermaker and works with his two brothers and the rest of his family at this spectacularly situated cidery overlooking the lower land region of Latrobe in the distance. Road Trip Day 5 From Tattiebolge I returned back to Adams County that night and camped at Pine Hill Grove Furnace State Park. On the morning of Day 5 I took the back roads through the state park to Ploughman Cider. Ben Wenk who along with cidermaker Edwin Winzeler are the backbone of Ploughman, but as Edwin was away and Ben was a bit late due to a farmer's market run, I was thrilled to have a sit down with Ben's father and get teh history of the Wenk's family farm. Notably, the Wenks have been in this area for over 100 years making the Three Spring Farms where Ploughman is located is a designated Centennial Farm of America. From Ploughman, I headed back to New York for my last stop on this trip to Westwind Orchard to meet cidermaker Fabio Chizzola. Before getting fully bit by the cidermaking bug, Fabio had turned the abandoned orchard into a U-Pick business and also a foodie destination complete with a full Italian menu and espresso bar. There is ample outdoor seating in a beautiful setting just waiting for you to stop by! Stay tuned for stand alone episodes with each of these makers that I met on this amazing cider road trip, my first since the world closed back in March 2020. I hope this snippet of my road trip, encourages you to take one too even if it is only around your own special spot of Ciderville. Thanks for Coming to arguably the best podcast about cricket from the best looking blokes at the best looking cricket club in the world. This week we have two new guests, the frightening talent and now established Ploughman that is Max Gumpert, and the excellent recent addition to our great club, Reez. We hear about how our league campaign is quickly showing title form in a dismantling of Surrey Warriors, as well as a statement of intent from a new bloke who showed some promising form, topped off by a show down against our friends and rivals that was (almost) as exciting as THAT World Cup final. In this episode, Alistair and George chat about George's new MG Maestro, Formula One, the return of the British Touring Car Championship and an 'eventful' trip to the pub. They also talk about driving the Zeno TSR-S hypercar from Denmark and Gordon Murray's electric car plans, and make a ham-fisted attempt at working on Alistair's MX-5.George also reveals how his life goals feature Ayrton Senna's brown loafers and, for some reason, a ploughman's lunch.
In this episode, I have a fascinating conversation with Dr. Michelle Ploughman. Michelle is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University. She is an expert in studying the effects of exercise on brain plasticity and her research focuses on the effects of exercise, rehabilitation and lifestyle habits on the brain challenged by injury, disease and aging. We talk about exercise prescription in multiple sclerosis (MS). We start discussing what we know about the risk factors of MS, and the gaps in knowledge in the prescription of exercise for these patients. We then talk about the importance of controlling body temperature during exercise and how essential it is to adapt training in periods where the symptoms of the disease are exacerbated. I found this episode extremely informative and educational. You can see what Michelle is working on on twitter @michploughman.

A nineteenth century English poet reflects on the changing seasons and the repeating patterns in life.
This episode features Ben Wenk of Ploughman Cider "Greetings From Adams County". Ben's family has been farming the land here since the 1820's. After selling produce at a farmers market in Philadelphia, Ben decided to try a Strongbow. It was different. Not sticky sweet like other ciders. He went home and tried making his first batch of cider. From there he was hooked. Adams County is considered Apple Capital USA. On this episode Ben and I discuss cider, apples and fruit tree farming. "Cider is not a value added product", Ben explains. We enjoyed this fascinating look into Ben's families heritage and his passion for cider making. 1606 Bendersville-Wenksville Road, Aspers, PA 17304 - www.ploughmancider.com - (717) 677-7186 - Facebook Highlights from our discussion: Strongbow Cider Luckyleaf Musselman's Dornick VinoShipper Three Springs Fruit Farm Ploughshares Cider Club John Bunker Big Hill Ciderworks Jack's Hard Cider Reid's Cider House Gettysburg Farmers Market Ploughman Cider Taproom Pour The Core Pennsylvania Cider Guild Philly Cider Week The Botany of Desire Farnum Hill Ciders

Recorded on location at Prohibition Tap Room in Philadelphia, PA, USA.Special thanks to Ben Wenk for arranging and also providing a delicious array of ciders to sample. More info on Ploughman here and more info on Three Springs Fruit Farm here.
A Burns Supper is a remarkable event, and one that I highly recommend you attend. The poetry of the Plowmen Bard is romantic, sentimental, lustful, honest, satirical, humorous and authentic for the 1780’s in which he wrote through now and forever. On the next January 25th, if you can find a Burns Supper being hosted near you: I highly recommend that attend. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the life of the Ploughman Bard.
In Episode 47 of the Weird Tales Radio Show we all chant “Rook di goo, There’s blood in the shoe” as we look at the horrid origins of another traditional pantomime – this time Cinderella. Got a woodburning stove? Have we got some log-burning folklore for you. We also go Urban Mythbusting - was the Ploughman’s Lunch really only invented in the 1950s by a cheese marketing committee? And in our Practical Magick slot, we have a hooddo spell for container work.
This month, Emma and Steve are joined by Dr Sarah Lonsdale, Author of The Journalist in British Fiction and Film. We talk about 1983's Ploughman's Lunch - a drama about journalists covering the 1982 Argentine War, the Tory Party conference and generally climbing the greasy pole of the establishment. Written by Ian McEwan and directed by Richard Eyre, this early Channel 4 film is as watchable as its characters are unlikeable.
Get the popcorn ready. This is one hell of a salty episode. Our inability to play into the Blacksmiths makes us sad about Anvil & Sledge and Ryan tilts hard about Alex's constant Navigator rerolls. We liked Ploughman though. So there's that.
Coin Wars We talk Coin Wars with local pundit and owner of The Wolves Glade, Mr Dave Millington, about his upcoming Coin Wars. Jason and I are both very excited by this project and we think all of you should be two.. all 8 or 9 of you. In either case we make sure there is as much info as we can cram in to the episode as possible. We also talk about tournaments, specifically about the Cardinal Cup and how Jason felt his tournament went. We also lament about the issues of running tournaments and how not getting pre-books can sometimes cause issues... yeah I'm speaking from experience. We also fit in all of the S4 updates so far, including Ploughman, whom by now you all should have seen. You get Jason and my take on all the models, and we even got Dave to talk about the Blacksmiths (considering he actually knows something about how to play them).
With Antonia Quirke. Sir Richard Eyre discusses his re-union with novelist Ian McEwan with the release of The Children Act, three decades after they collaborated on The Ploughman's Lunch. Marc Forster discusses Christopher Robin, his take on what happened to Winnie The Pooh's friend after he left Hundred Acre Wood and got a job in the city Larushka Ivan-Zadeh and Rosemary Fletcher discuss the cross-over between children's and grown-up's movies.
A Full Cast Adaptation of Gentleness and Nobility by John Heywood and John Rastell A Knight overhears a Merchant boasting of his nobleness, sparking an argument between the two as to what is a gentleman. They are further interupted by a Ploughman, whose debating style is a little more… violent. With Rob Myson as the Merchant, Heydn McCabe as the Knight and Robert Crighton as the Ploughman. The Epilogue is Geir Madland. So long 2017 In this episode I endeavour to wrap up the final morsels of information that have leaked out of Steamforged Games since SteamCon US, and do a pretty naff job of it. Its not like you are coming to this podcast for decent information right? Oh I also try out a new section in which I have a couple of games with a slightly maligned model and then express my own opinions on them. This week it is Ploughman, who frankly I wish I liked more, but sadly he just doesn't quite do enough for me. Those paying slightly more attention will realise this means I also plan on buying more Guild Ball teams... its a sad and shocking development Oh and news on potential BGG tournaments... watch (?) this space.
Date: Sun AM 15th October 2017 Preacher: Rev. David McLaughlin Bible Reference: Luke 9v62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
As Jesus gets ready for his final trip to Jerusalem, he refines the expectations of those who follow him. We see him telling those who would be his disciples, that they are to be prophets, proclaimers, and ploughmen.
Today, we are going to talk about the apple. Adams County, Pennsylvania is the fifth largest county for apple production in the United States. It is home to apple growers, processors, and cider makers of all sizes. Nobody's hand is more on the pulse of this community than Ben Wenk of Three Springs Fruit Farm. His family has been farming the land in Adams County since 1901 and has seen the apple industry grow from its nascent beginnings into a burgeoning industry.
In this episode of ORIGINS, we take a look at local orchards, orchardists and a cider distillery. Our first panelist is Ben Wenk , the seventh generation partner/manager at Three Springs Fruit Farm based in Aspers, Pennsylvania. Three Springs attends local farmers markets, sells wholesale, and makes Ploughman brand hard cider. The Wenk family's diversified farm grows a little bit of everything but specializes in apples and peaches. Our next panelist is Rob Miller, who together with his wife Patricia Power own Distillery Lane Ciderworks. They planted their first apple trees 16 years ago with a planting of 1000 trees. They've been adding trees ever since then and now have over 4000 trees of specialty American and European cider apples. They sell their hard ciders in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, D.C., and West Virginia. They operate a tasting room at their farm that is open every weekend. Our third panelist is Gwen Kokes, the Stewardship Coordinator at the BALTIMORE ORCHARD PROJECT which is a program of CIVIC WORKS. Gwen was the Project Specialist for the Baltimore Orchard Project where she conducted research, did some community organizing and volunteer management. Now, she organizes the Orchard Stewards Program, a network of trained orchardists, and makes Stewardship Year plans with participating Community Orchards. The Baltimore Orchard Project just planted its 1,000th tree! And….there are almost 100 orchards in Baltimore City alone.

Constable knew this scene well: the Stour Valley from just outside the grounds of Old Hall in East Bergholt, with the churches of Langham and Stratford St Mary villages in the distance. He depicted the ploughmen at work in a manner typical of Suffolk, using a swing plough, which was light and required only a single ploughman and two horses working side by side (rather than a team of four), considered to be an efficient, modern mode of ploughing, contributing to the productivity of the area (Rosenthal 1983, pp. 18–19). And he depicted a ‘summerland’, a field that was ploughed and harrowed in the spring, left fallow over the summer months as part of a two-year crop rotation system, ready for manuring in autumn and sowing in winter (ibid., p. 12). The contemporary farmer or countryman would have appreciated this image of agricultural life of Suffolk (Rosenthal, p. 21). Constable exhibited this first version of the subject at the Royal Academy in 1814 and at the British Institution in 1815, from where it was purchased by John Allnutt, a Clapham wine merchant and collector. As a result of this sale Constable was encouraged to pursue his career as a painter. Beckett has suggested that ‘in Constable’s memory such scenes were gilded with the light of eternal summer and the picture stood for a symbol’ (R.B. Beckett, ‘A Summerland by John Constable’, Art Quarterly, XXVII, summer 1964, p. 176). Constable certainly stressed the poetic aspect of the landscape, linking it to an established literary and pictorial tradition. In the 1814 Royal Academy catalogue, the entry for this work had an accompanying quotation from Robert Bloomfield’s The Farmer’s Boy – a long, 1500-line, four-part poem in heroic couplets composed between 1796–98 and published in 1800. This poem pointed to the solitary nature of the ploughman’s work: But, unassisted through each toilsome day, With smiling brow the Ploughman cleaves his way. In making this reference to poetry Constable implied that the image was not just of a particular place, but also expressed a more general mood and atmosphere, the ‘feel of nature’. Bloomfield was a ‘peasant poet’ of Suffolk, whose work appealed to Constable. He stressed the virtues of honest, hard farming life. Albert Boime has suggested that Bloomfield’s vision of farming life ‘appealed to the gentry, who identified themselves with his nostalgia for a bucolic past and his moralising posture on rural labour’ (A. Boime, Art in an Age of Bonapartism 1800–1815, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1990, p. 174). Commentators have questioned whether Constable was sympathetic to the ‘toilsome’ labour of the workers in the field, or whether he had a more conservative view and simply saw them as part of the scene. Certainly, he portrayed this scene from a high vantage point so that the ploughmen seem to merge into the natural elements, small figures within the landscape (Rosenthal 1983, pp. 71–82). In a letter to John Dunthorne senior of 22 February 1814, Constable wrote aboutthis painting: I have added some ploughmen to the landscape from the park pales which is a great help, but I must try and warm the picture a little more if I can. But it will be difficult as ’tis now all of a piece – it is bleak and looks as if there would be a shower of sleet, and that you know is too much the case with my things(Beckett I, p. 101). Constable based this view over the Stour Valley on drawings in his 1813 sketchbook. He also referred to his sketches of ploughmen in this sketchbook. With the inclusion of the figures of the ploughmen he not only added a point of interest but made the scene an agricultural landscape, celebrating country life. This version of A ploughing scene in Suffolk was used as the basis for the mezzotint A summerland engraved by David Lucas .Constable made a second painting of the subject, A ploughing scene in Suffolk (A summerland) c.1824.
Richard Eyre is equally at ease whether he is directing in the theatre, for television or on film. In conversation with Roy Plomley, he talks about some of his successes which have included Guys and Dolls at the National Theatre, the films Laughterhouse and The Ploughman's Lunch, and his period as producer of Play for Today with BBC television.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: El Cant Dels Ocells by Pablo Casals Book: Partridge's Dictionary of Slang Luxury: Saxophone
