Nashville-based singer-songwriters Carly Layne and Andrew Shaver join us for a special family-themed Thanksgiving episode to discuss the dark comedy, THE REF starring Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey. MNAM's holiday season kicks off with this Ted Demme-directed movie about a professional thief who gets more than he bargained for while holding a dysfunctional family hostage. THE REF was released to little fanfare in March of 1994, but has since gained a cult following as an unconventional Christmas classic thanks to its sharp performances and biting, profanity-laced dialogue. In a conversation slightly less raunchy, we'll pass final judgment on THE REF, and take some diversions into Bridget Jones's Diary, engagement stories, problematic artists, cousins, music royalties, Wrongfully Accused, blackmail, YouTube families, and much much more! THE REF is currently available to stream for free with subscription on Hoopla.

In 1991, Derrick was falsely accused of murder and imprisoned in 1992 for 23 years for a murder he didn't commit. A corrupt cop combined with a broken system changed Derricks life forever. He spent much of the next 23 years performing jailhouse legal work. He pored over trial transcripts, filing motions on behalf of other inmates and occasionally winning their appeals. Imagine sitting at work and learning the community you live in is calling you a cop killer. It would be cause for immediate distress. If you are a Black Man, it becomes a matter of life and death. These were the circumstance Darnell Hicks faced in 2020. Being an innocent man who had been convicted by the court of public opinion. Hicks is now suing those who accused him publicly as well as Facebook and Twitter. Winning that lawsuit won't change the impact being labeled a cop killer has on his life. However, Hicks is hoping it will prevent someone else from going through the same thing. On this episode of “The Word” Jackie Rae sits down with Darnell Hicks and learns what life is like after being wrongfully accused. https://youtu.be/v0TxV1_bjaY

Hello friends, in this episode of The Good, The Bad and The Pure Evil, I look at the story of the Kerry Babies Scandal. Happening in the 80s in Ireland, a baby boy was found dead on White Strand Beach, Co.Kerry, miles away a pregnant unwed mother's baby was born sleeping. Knowing her baby wasn't going to have a proper burial she buried the child in the family farm. The Guards had increase pressure to solve this unusual crime and solve it fast. They would try pin the murder of the little boy on the beach on the mother of the other baby who died. They would claim both babies were hers. Even after blood tests proving she wasn't the mother of the boy on the beach the Guards still argued she was. From the madness of accusations and the fact the case was thrown out the Kerry Babies Tribunal began investigating the guards involved.......

The '90s. America Online, Windows 95, "Friends". It was a hell of a decade. Death metal artist Pablo Vergara, whose stage name is Morbid, posted videos of himself during a stay at downtown Los Angeles's infamous Cecil Hotel. One year later, in 2013, a young woman was found dead on the roof of the building (there's a Netflix true crime special on the case). Some online 'sleuths' accused Morbid of committing the murder. Undeterred by the inconvenient fact that he wasn't even in the country at the time, the cancel mob went after Morbid and drove him to the brink of suicide. Vergara relives the painful experience to Rob and Desma and tells them what he's doing to help other victims of online cancel culture.
What’s concealed by the American narrative around Wuhan’s response to COVID-19? Can we attribute the speed at which the virus was contained to the repressive top down measures of an authoritarian government or were there decentralized human infrastructures built up to provide mutual aid and fact check news reports at the height of the pandemic. Digital ethnographer, Tricia Wang (pronounced Wong which we discuss) joins the WBI show to discuss the role of hyperlocal networks on WeChat, how SARS-COV-1 racialized mask wearing and the importance of regulatory frameworks for indoor ventilation to mitigate the occupational dynamics of transmission. This is the story of Elizabeth Leiba, who still lives with the shame of an arrest that wasn't her fault during her days as a student at the University of Florida. After a local drug store accused her of theft, (for a pack of batteries she had purchased) the store refused to admit wrongdoing and for years, she didn't talk about it, until the death of George Floyd and the outpouring of support for Kyle Rittenhouse, a teen charged with killing two men during the protests in Kenosha, triggered a need to respond, and wonder how so many can support a young who has admitted to taking two lives, yet try to ruin the life and reputation of a young girl all those years earlier over a pack of batteries. It's a powerful story. Follow Elizabeth on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabethleiba (https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabethleiba)

However, the evidence, in this case, is questionable at best and this man's life hangs in the balance. Last wee we introduced you to Rodney and Stacey and the details of their relationship. We also talked about Stacey's fiancee, Jimmy, a former Giddings police officer who did 10 years in prison for the rape and kidnapping of a woman. Tonight we get a little further into this case. We will be discussing the investigation and a lot about the corruption that is beyond blatant in this case. Jimmy and his fellow officers do a ton of questionable things that we know is going to leave you scratching your head.We had originally thought we'd be able to finish this off in 2 episodes however, we decided to split it up into 3 total and then also give you some bonus extras with interviews of people close to Rodney. In this episode I introduce discussions about a current case in the military trial system. The case revolves around an incident that took place in Iraq last year. In this short podcast, I explain the urgency for action to be taken to dispose of this case before it goes to trial. The two podcasts following this one go into more detail about the situation.
