In this episode: FAQ is: Boston or New York? Today's Destination is: Coronado island, California Today's Mistake-Underestimating time required for security. Travel Advice: How to swim without losing your valuables. FAQ: Boston or New York? If you have to choose, decide which is more relevant, the larger city with three airports or one large airport, Boston. If you plan to see a broadway play, that's easy, New York. If you want to ride the T, visit cemeteries from the Revolutionary War, then Boston. In New York, you may want to see some of Central Park. Think of rhe TV show, Friends, based in New York, or Seinfeld. Then think of the show Cheers and that is Boston. Both are good choices. Since I'm born and raised in New York, I will go there with my choice. I pick New York. What about you? Today's destination: Coronado, California It's not really a complete island, because it's connected by land. It's just south of San Diego and north of Mexico. Most people arrive from the scenic Coronado bridge, which is spectacular and free to cross in your vehicle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego%E2%80%93Coronado_Bridge Others arrive via a narrow piece of land called, Silver Strand. It's also a California state beach. The busiest time to visit is Christmas Time, so you can see the huge tree in the hotel Del lobby, the ice skaters, the seashore, and the beautiful hotel grounds, where the movie Some Like it Hot was filmed in the 1950's with Marilyn Monroe. I went there yesterday and caught up in the holiday spirit with the tree in the lobby, sandcastles built to welcome in the new year and igloos on the sand that could be rented by the hour. My favorite parts of the island are the public library and parks where the town congregages, the swimming pool, where I've attended many swim events, and great restaurants. I also took a lot of sailing and Coast Guard training in the nautical part of this island paradise. I learned how to tie knots among other things and got certified to rent a boat. In recent years, they have had some spillover of sewage from the Tijuana estuary. This has closed the beaches in some regions. This should be fixed soon, thanks to awareness and legislation of civic leaders. What to do? why not a beach walking tour, by yourself? Coronado is a Pet friendly town with very high real estate prices, in case you are thinking of moving here. https://coronadovisitorcenter.com/ https://coronadovisitorcenter.com/listings/coronado-beach-walking-tour-by-emerald-keepers/ Today's Mistake: Underestimating time required for airport security. I got to the airport at an early time, so I thought. then I looked at the line for the TSA. That had about 1000 people in it, so this would be a rough start. If the security line is long, go directly to the gate quickly. Don't delay. If you have TSA pre-check or CLEAR, you are in luck. Otherwise, you need to make sure you're in the right line so you don't waste valued time. Tell the people in front of you that you have a flight soon. I did not do that. I missed my flight, so I have learned my lesson. Get there early. Don't try to push the time it takes to get through security. Today's Travel Advice- How to swim without losing your valuables. For solo travelers who want to smim, while making sure their valuables are safe. Leave most valued things in your hotel or room. Here are four tips to keep the things you need safe while you swim. befriend a group or a couple on the beach or pool and ask them to watch your stuff bring a waterproof bag with you and swim or paddle with it. bury your valued items in ziplock bags under the sand or hide them. put the phone and keys in an empty soft drink container, like a McDonald's cup and maybe no one will suspect that diverstion.
Greetings Listeners! In January, the next cohort of the IT Leadership Academy, ITLA 29, gets underway! California state government has an IT Leadership Academy named ITLA. What Is ITLA? The Information Technology Leadership Academy (ITLA) is a 17-week program for public sector IT professionals with a focus on developing the critical leadership skills needed by the state's IT workforce. Participants in the academy are selected from state and other public agencies and departments that work in information technology programs. Individuals with a vision for enterprise-wide thinking, strong potential for career advancement into executive or senior management positions, and experience carrying out their organization's mission and vision are encouraged to apply. ITLA is the State of California IT community's equivalent of Top Gun flight school. I went through the program in 2015-2016, and it really jumpstarted my career. I've prepared a virtual speech for this year's upcoming cohort. I'm looking forward to them listening to it! A friend of mine, and one of our previous guests, Jeff Titus, from episode #024 contacted me today and told me that the farm where I learned to love cattle and agriculture had been put up for sale. The current owners purchased it from my step-father a few years back, and it has pretty much just been sitting. However, now they have made some significant changes to it and put it up for sale. If you are interested in purchasing it, please contact Jeff, and he would be happy to represent you. Here is his contact information: Jeff Titus (209) 988-3335 jtitus@c21mm.com Here is the link to the listing: 1342 Hickman Road, Hickman, California It's got a small, three bedroom, one bathroom house on it that is a legitimate farm house and several outbuildings. However, the current owners have torn out all of the livestock handling facilities and planted almonds. So, you would be buying into a turn key, 10 acre almond operation. Or, you could rip them out, put fences and corrals back in, replant pasture and start over, but.....that would be crazy. According to the listing, the house was built in 1935. According to my family my step-grandfather, Boyd Womack, and my step-grandmother, Vada Womack, immigrated to California from Oklahoma around 1941 and lived in Pixley for about a year before buying this place for $5,000 in 1942. Now it's listed for $795,000. That's a 15,800% increase in just under 80 years! Their trek to California was after the Dust Bowl and Depression had ended or were ending, but their journey was very much the same with everything loaded onto one truck and my step-father, Chuck, and his brother, Ray, riding the entire way on a mattress that sat on top of all of the family possessions. Boyd and Vada rode in the cab of the truck with the little girl, Tommie. When they first purchased the property and home there was 20 acres. At some point Boyd sold off the ten acres on the eastern side of the farm. When they first arrived, Chuck and Ray, slept in the well house because it was a one bedroom home. Later, Boyd converted added on a bedroom and kitchen on the north side of the home and converted the previous kitchen to a bedroom. The home became the three bedroom, one bath home that it is now and the boys were able to move in. Boyd and Vada lived the rest of their lives in this house, and then Chuck and Tommie inherited it, Ray had already passed. Chuck bought Tommie's half of the farm, and he lived almost the rest of his life there as well. However, when he wasn't able to keep up with the demands any longer, he sold to the current owners and moved into nearby Waterford. So, today's episode is about my memories from that place.
Photo: San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.@Batchelorshow#PacificWatch: Is California prepped for the next big earthquake, three decades later? @JCBliss Here's what would happen if a huge quake hit Los Angeles -- If a large earthquake ruptures the San Andreas fault, the death toll could approach 2,000, and the shaking could lead to damage in every city in Southern California — from Palm Springs to San Luis Obispo, seismologist Lucy Jones has said. Los Angeles Times These are some of the major earthquake risks facing California -- It's been three decades since two disastrous earthquakes shook California into looking more seriously at its seismic vulnerabilities. In 1989, Northern California was rocked by the Loma Prieta quake. Five years later, the Northridge quake hit Southern California. Los Angeles TimesJapan and Mexico have earthquake early-warning systems. How does California's compare? -- When it comes to building a state-of-the-art earthquake early warning system, California is behind. Los Angeles TimesEarthquake apps: Which ones are worth downloading? -- Apps cannot predict when and where an earthquake will strike, but there is a relatively new early warning system for the U.S. West Coast. Those warnings will come through an app called MyShake. Madalyn Amato in the Los Angeles TimesHow earthquakes happen: The science of a shake -- Californians have no doubt seen warnings about a major earthquake in headlines, science textbooks, Hollywood and more for years. And experts say we're overdue. But to prepare for the Big One, it will help to know what one is. Los Angeles TimesLucy Jones says this is the most important thing you can do to prepare for a quake -- People, not kits. If you really want to be ready for the next big earthquake, forget the earthquake kit and go talk to your neighbors. Los Angeles Times
West Virginia might be 2,500 miles from Silicon Valley, but that's not stopping tech entrepreneurs from finding ways to bring California IT jobs to the Mountain State. “We have so many talented people already here in West Virginia, we just need to get the word out that we're here and ready to get to work,” said Todd Cope, CEO of CentralApp, a Huntington-based talent exchange that connects tech companies with IT workers living in West Virginia and other Appalachian states. In recent months, Cope has traveled the country to sell tech executives on his company's services and to spread the word about West Virginia. *** Listen to the entire interview to hear all about Todd's cross country quest.
Surfing can teach you a lot about business. UGG founder Brian Smith learned that in both, you have to keep pushing towards the next opportunity — the next wave — or you’ll go under.Today, UGG is well-known around the world for its sheepskin boots and other products. But Brian weathered many storms to keep the company afloat. The first obstacle was his own education. After 10 years of studying to be a chartered accountant in Australia, on the day of his graduation, Brian quit. “I never liked accounting,” he says.Looking for a new direction, Brian set his sights on California. In his mind, it was the source of all things trendy. He took his surfboard to Malibu, hoping to find the next Levi’s.Instead, he found more surfers. And the product they were interested in wasn’t from California: It was Brian’s sheepskin boots, which kept him warm in the chilly Pacific wind.Sheepskin boots were already popular in Australia, but you couldn’t get them anywhere in the U.S. Brian started testing the waters, visiting surf shops to gauge interest. Based on the retailers’ enthusiasm, he ordered 500 pairs — only to get shot down when the product arrived.“Our total sales for that first season of UGG was 28 pairs,” Brian remembers.Down but not out, Brian loaded up his van and hit the beaches. The boots eventually became a hot ticket for surfers. But it wasn’t smooth sailing from there.Over the next few years, Brian lost ownership of the company and faced competitors who ripped off his brand and stole his manufacturer, leaving thousands of orders unfilled. He also became a confident salesman, making friends with retailers around the country. Their loyalty ultimately helped save the company.Next, Brian set his sights on the mainstream market. With a little help from Pamela Anderson and Oprah Winfrey, UGG went from surfer gear to essential winter wear worldwide.Brian eventually bought back the company he’d started. In 1995, having ridden through so many low points to reach the crest, he sold UGG to outdoor brand Deckers.“You have to pivot and keep moving forward because that's the only way that any entrepreneur’s going to get successful. Manage it through the crazy toddler stage, and then hang on for dear life when it hits the teenage phase,” he says. Featured Entrepreneur

Building a new house or an apartment in California can take years, even decades. So, why does it cost so much to build a home in California? It’s more than just the land, labor and materials. PolitiFact California found the lengthy development process itself, complete with delays, strict environmental reviews and expensive impact fees, can add tens of thousands of dollars to the overall cost of new homes in the state. Reporter Chris Nichols and the PolitiFact California team has looked closer at the fees, what those fees are and why they are so much higher than in many other states. Nichols talked with contractors, developers and an academic to get a full picture.

Here's the concept: we sit down with a creative personality, pour some wine and get to talking about the creative subjects that interest them, and what makes these creatives tick. This time is a bit of an international edition, as we interview two Europeans. So in case your summer doesn't include a wine-drenched European vacation, this is almost a substitute. How do male and female creatives differ? What shapes a person, and makes them choose a creative life? What makes a creative choose to live in a certain place? You're about to find out. Part 1: We pour a glass of Alexandre Cyrus Cabernet Sauvignon and chat with Max J. Van Praag. This dapper self-described Renaissance man is a polyglot who speaks five languages fluently, grew up in an artistic, international household, and practices several artistic media including music and the culinary arts. What made the peripatetic Van Praag choose to settle down in Marin County, California? It's a magical formula having to do with the light, the energy, and the creative possibilities. After all, Marin County, California's rare mix of natural beauty, climate, and proximity to San Francisco has attracted numerous artists, writers, musicians, and all other varieties of creative entrepreneur. You'll notice we keep Max's actual job a mystery. That's intentional. In an era where "what do you do?" seems to be acceptable cocktail party conversation, Max is adamant about not wishing to be defined by his job but rather by his numerous, constantly evolving passions. (35 minutes) Part 2: At the 35 minute mark, we pour glasses of Whispering Angel rose and meet Nathalie Guillerault, the architect and interior designer behind Dock One Studio, a Marin County based design firm that creatives artful, harmonious spaces by focusing on the experience of being in a space, and using that space. For Nathalie, it's not just about decorating, it's more fundamental than that. Nathalie discusses how her upbringing in Europe formed her artistic and creative philosophies, how her creativity was discouraged by her parents at first because architecture was considered a "male" or "masculine" career, what life as a female architect looks like, and how she fosters creativity in her own children. Nathalie also makes her home in Marin County, and takes the Creative Happy Hour team through her decision to leave France and settle down in Marin. (55 min)
A High School student in Stockton who is in the adult film industry, wants to publish an article in the high school newspaper about the adult film industry, however the school wants to review the article before it goes to print. Students are saying that the school is hindering their freedom of speech and press. Where would you be punished harsher for committing a hate crime? Texas or California? It is Texas. Texas just executed a man for killing a person for being Black.
The news was thick this week with many some can say, 'conspiracy theories' with some of your favorite, most popular talents. Prime example, R&B singer R. Kelly is once again in the news for troubling accusations, this time, running a 'sex cult' in his Chicago and Atlanta homes. whose name is once again attached to troubling accusations. The "Bump N' Grind" performer has faced numerous allegations of engaging in sex with underage girls, but the women said to be involved in this so-called "cult" are all above the legal age in the respective states - WOW...listen for more tea! Rapper DMX is in big trouble with the Internal Revenue Service for concealing his income for year, racking up a 1.7 million debt. He's facing possibly over 40 years in prison, he can't bark at that...find out more! R&B singer, Usher has paid out $1.1 million to settle a lawsuit with a stylist who claimed the pop star infected her with herpes. The law is clear in California: It is illegal to knowingly or recklessly transmit an STD. Usher allegedly did just that when he told the victim he had tested negative for the virus, despite a “greenish discharge” from his penis, the court papers say. This won't be going away anytime soon, unfortunately. Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian are both set to join the cast of, "Dancing with the Stars"...this is crazy! Chyna will reportedly be paid between $250,000 and $1 Million depending on how long she lasts. We’re also told that Rob Kardashian is CLOSE to signing. These two must really love/care for each other because there always in some shit. On a brighter note, we had in studio Glam Goddess, Bri Hall! Based on our recent global survey of more than 100 higher ed brand identity redesigns over the past 2 years, Ken Steele counts down the 10 best rebrandings – those that are professional, memorable, balanced and well-designed, AND that didn’t spark a backlash from faculty, students or alumni. #10: Saint Louis University, Missouri Design firm Olson of Minneapolis created a streamlined new logo using a vastly simplified coat of arms and an “ownable” fleur de lis. The branding system includes specs for consistent iconography, a variety of wallpapers, and a wide range of subbrands – including a new logo for Billken Athletics. This is SLU - https://youtu.be/CYMBLYkEsPQ About SLU’s New Logos - https://youtu.be/oc1tCyzm0_c What is a Billiken? - https://youtu.be/xmaxVk8lakY #9: Belmont Abbey College, North Carolina Another Catholic college redesigned their steeple-focused identity with the help of Rickabaugh Graphics in Ohio. The result is a dynamic shield emblem with fresher typography and a slightly brighter crimson, and a new mark for Crusaders Athletics. #8: Augusta University, Georgia In 2012, Augusta State University merged with Georgia Health Sciences to create Georgia Regents University – and then, apparently after a lawsuit from Regents University in Virginia, it changed its name again in 2015 to Augusta University. The new identity features a slick illustration of a colonial belltower (which doesn’t actually exist) that is simultaneously clearly a letter “A”. Augusta University Identity in Depth – https://youtu.be/CIBKWkF9DMY #7: Stanislaus State University, California It was known by far too many different names: CSU Stanislaus, CSUS, California State Stanislaus, Stanislaus State, Stan State, and even “Turkey Tech.” But with the help of the Jeffrey Scott Agency in Fresno, Stan State unveiled a snazzy new “split shield” logo system in 2015 that standardized its name. Departments and individuals can now choose from “CSU Stanislaus” or “Stanislaus State” logos, and even “Stan State” is officially endorsed for internal audiences. #6: Maricopa Community Colleges, Arizona The 10 colleges in Maricopa County had startlingly different brand identities, but in 2015 the Maricopa System unveiled “One Maricopa,” a new unifying logo system that would create consistent subbrands for each campus, while retaining their former colours and visuals. It was a masterful effort at compromise… but so far, there’s little sign that the colleges have actually adopted the new branding system. That’s the first half of our round-up of the world’s top ten recent rebrands. Next time, we’ll complete the countdown with the top five!
