After getting his start in the region's beat battle circuit, he built his early fan base with projects like the acclaimed instrumental album “The Voyage Home” and “The Freakstrumental Joint,” a multimedia experience that meshes music, poetry and photography. Work with frequent collaborators Chris Orrick of Ugly Heroes (“The Kick,” BLAT! Pack/Fat Beats 2013) and Doss The Artist (several projects, including the 2012 Christmas EP “Peace King”) have landed coverage on the likes of Huffington Post, MTV Rap Fix, COMPLEX, and more. In 2015 he release Emissary with Mellow Orange. After a multi-year hiatus, Hir-O is back on the scene with music partner Noveliss of Clear Soul Forces, looking to update his older catalogue to the streaming world! Your typical Chris Orrick interview will most likely talk about the subject matter in his music such as self-medicating and coping with life. For us however, we always like to start at square one and learn his baseline motivations to understand his entire 10,000 hour journey. You will listen to a man who is in a place where music isn't even at the forefront of his mind. Most people think of music as a chore because of how the grind is and if real life gets in the way, how do you choose? Well I sit down and we explore these themes. This week we delve into the legacy of Aceyalone's seminal album All Balls Don't Bounce on its 25th anniversary. After that we have dual interviews with the members of new group Small Bills. Producer The Lasso, whose work you may know from collaborations with Lando Chill, Chris Orrick and Psypiritual, is a multi-instrumentalist with restless creativity who has crafted a new sound for Elucid on this project. Elucid, one of the best MCs in the world right now, has an extensive solo catalog and is a member of groups Armand Hammer, Nostrum Grocers, and now Small Bills. This project finds Elucid exploring new sonic territory displaying the same high level lyricism we've come to expect from him. Small Bills' debut, Don't Play It Straight, will be released on Mello Music Group on Friday October 30th. DBRP is a proud member of the Stony Island Audio podcast network

Overjoyed to bring you my next guest this week, The Lasso! Of course we dive into his life, moving 1400 miles away from his hometown and starting fresh in a new area and how those events led to him working with Lando Chill. However, we also talk about the new album he has with Chris Orrick, “I Read That I Was Dead". You see, Cryptozoologist Chris Orrick died last March. The Detroit vocalist with the same name woke up and read the news of his namesake's death. This sparked a journey into a subculture of folklore and undiscovered cryptid species. That seed grew over the months into a dark, industrial, and abstract record. Turns out, The Lasso and Chris live only a few miles from each other and seemed like a unique pairing. The entire album was recorded entirely at The Lasso's MI studio. On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Detroit hip-hop artist Chris Orrick, who just released his newest album, Out To Sea, recently via Mello Music Group. Orrick already has a vast discography of music that touches on his own personal experiences and his views on the world going on these days. During our conversation, we talked about the new album, his creative freedom, making music while not expecting stardom, and much more. Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. Orrick chose the American folk punk band AJJ. It’s been a great ‘18 for HipHop thus far!! We have enjoyed what has been released. From albums to singles to what’s still to come, we see how HipHop remains mighty healthy. It is the perfect time to have a First Quarter Music Review! We have already been blessed to see end-of-year top ten candidates (Skyzoo, Evidence and Phonte), strong loosies (Pac Div, Chris Orrick, Slim Thug and Stro) to singles of albums yet to drop (MF DOOM and Czarface, Royce 5’9, and Lou Phelps).
