After getting his start in the region's beat battle circuit, he built his early fan base with projects like the acclaimed instrumental album “The Voyage Home” and “The Freakstrumental Joint,” a multimedia experience that meshes music, poetry and photography. Work with frequent collaborators Chris Orrick of Ugly Heroes (“The Kick,” BLAT! Pack/Fat Beats 2013) and Doss The Artist (several projects, including the 2012 Christmas EP “Peace King”) have landed coverage on the likes of Huffington Post, MTV Rap Fix, COMPLEX, and more. In 2015 he release Emissary with Mellow Orange. After a multi-year hiatus, Hir-O is back on the scene with music partner Noveliss of Clear Soul Forces, looking to update his older catalogue to the streaming world! On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I had the opportunity to chat it up with Baton Rouge/Tulsa best kept secret Marcel P. Black on his music, fatherhood, and etc. Baton Rouge veteran emcee Marcel P. Black has already received high praise from some of the most well respected names in Hip-Hop. Most recently Marcel was featured on XXL.com's list “12 Baton Rouge Rappers You Should Know,” also highlighted on HipHopDX.com's “Up Next By DX” feature. A true grassroots, DIY, indie/underground emcee, Marcel balances being a leader in the Baton Rouge scene as he facilitates monthly and quarterly events in his local Hip-Hop community, and a pioneer/ambassador with a serious touring schedule that's led him to stages in every region of the United States, including festivals such as A3C in Atlanta, Georgia, the 2X2 Fest in Columbus, Ohio, Secret Stages in Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson Indie Music Week in Jackson, Mississippi just to name a few. Next to Marcel's great music and work ethic, his claim to fame is his live show. A3C.com once describes Marcel's performance style as “Baptist Deacon meets Gangster Rapper meets Malcom X.” Marcel has shared stages with KRS-One, Common, Jay Electronica, Mobb Deep, Run The Jewelz, Kevin Gates, & Slum Village, Skyzoo, and Elzhi, as well as underground heavyweights like Supastition, Sean Price (R.I.P.), Clear Soul Forces, Blueprint, Locksmith, and MegaRan. Marcel has always used his platform as an emcee to bring light to social justice issues, from organizing benefits for National World Aids Day, organizing a benefit concert to raise money for the children of Alton Sterling, to speaking on panels and lecturing on the intersection between social justice and Hip-Hop in collegiate and high school classrooms. Marcel has worked in the field as a youth development worker for 18 years, most recently creating a curriculum and class called #FreeHipHop taught in middle and high schools in Baton Rouge. The husband/father/artist/activist/youth worker's goal is to use Hip-Hop culture as a conduit to freedom.

Real talk, in 2015 when vinyl was making a resurgence in the hip hop game I blind-bought a Clear Soul Forces record from Fat Beats and the production made my jaw drop. Turns out the whole record was crafted by producer NAMELESS who still vividly remembers his earliest days crafting instrumentals as a teenager growing up in Flint, Michigan during the late 1990s. What that means for me is I can now sit down half a decade later with him to reflect on Flint, making video-game beats while being compared to other producers, being the first act on Street Corner Music, and the rise and fall of Clear Soul Forces. He's come a long way from making beats with the trial version of Fruity Loops and we run the gamut on a myriad of topics that explain and document his 10,000 hours. BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep246: COVID-19 Edition 01! Well folks - what do you say? Nothing to say that hasn’t already been said other than we’re back at it - albeit a little differently. Don’t get it twisted - DOE & MEEKS will STILL be providing you that twice a week Smithsonian Grade while also doing what we can to protect our families & the community. The format remains the same - mix on Tuesday, interview session on Thursday - it just means Meeks will be dialing in to Dirty Blanket Studios live from the comfort of his own home until we get through this thing. Got it? Ok - back to our regularly scheduled program. If you haven’t noticed, there is a TON, and we mean a TON of great, new hip-hop out, so we’re gonna light up Ep246 with a bunch of new joints, as well as a mid-mix interview with ESTEE NACK! It’s been a few years since our interview session with Nack, so we got him on the horn to catch up on new projects with GRUBBY PAWZ & SUPERIOR as well as get the scoop on his near-death experience in the DR at the end of 2019 - right after the release of his jaw-dropping feature on WESTSIDE GUNN’s “Hitler Wears Hermes 7.” If that ain’t enough to get you riled up - our interview session this week is with none other than SABAC RED of NON-PHIXION! Vangardians - can you believe the timing of this? Sabac and crew have been warning ya’ll about the situation the world is in right now for 20+ years - and it’s THIS week that we have an in-depth interview with him!? We can’t make this shit up! Check the interview snippets at the end of the mix until we drop the full on Thursday, and while you’re listening - delete those other half-ass podcasts from your playlists that distract you from the real - they can’t deliver it like Doe & Meeks can!

We’re chatting with veteran hip-hop artist Leaf Erikson about his latest album, Canvas Of Hope. We cover a lot of ground, actually, going back to his formative years, as early as 4th grade, through the mid and late 90’s, as well as the influence that his time working as a Free Press reporter had on the way he crafts his lyrics. Erikson has been putting out music for well over a decade and has collaborated with several artists over that time. — Erikson belongs to the Butter Made Records label (Unapologetic, Progressive Music). He credits jazz as his favorite genre and has been curating the Jazzadelic music series at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe for almost 8 months now, featuring artists like Guilty Simpson, Boog Brown, Miz Korona, and Ilajide (of Clear Soul Forces—who, we should mention, comes up in our conversation). Erikson talks about what he’s working on next, but you should also know that, along with Canvas of Hope, he was also featured on the Apollo Brown album, ‘Sincerely Yours. https://leaferikson.bandcamp.com/ https://soundcloud.com/leaf-erikson

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Ty Farris interview session! Ya’ll know we’re big fans of Detroit hip-hop here at Southern Vangard Radio - when we kicked off this show in 2015, a new wave of sound was coming out of the D in the form of Nolan The Ninja, Clear Soul Forces, Ty and many others. Since then, he has continued to ride that wave - if not command it - and he’s mashing through 2018 like a Mack truck with no brakes. Ty is kicking off the 2nd half of the year with the release of “No Cosign, Just Cocaine 2”, so we did it up right! Ty dropped a video for “Tyrant Talk” on Monday, we had an album premiere on Episode 174 AND there’s this here interview session for one day before the album drops on Friday, August 10! We get the scoop on his approach with the 2nd installment of the series that he originally kicked off on Valentine’s Day this year, his incessant attention to detail when it comes to song creation and how important it is for him to have a cohesive sound across a project, even when several different producers are involved. We hop back to the past for a bit and talk about his coming up in the battle scene, how he ended up being tight with French Montana and how he and Proof completely flipped the Detroit battle scene upside down in the early to mid 2000’s. You know there’s a lot more, right? Right. We’re not going to tell you everything here, right? Right. Well go on then! Push play, soak in the real and cop “No Cosign, Just Cocaine 2” on Friday Aug 10…and surely….now SURELY…you MUST know by now it’s that #smithsoniangrade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live August 5, 2018 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #DJSoko interview session! This fine gentleman has taken the indy rap world by storm in 2015, so we had to have this Detroit native and now-Brooklyn resident on the show. We dig into Soko’s recently released LP “Domino Effect” on his new label/imprint Left of Center, how this record set the stage for something much bigger and what his plans are for the label are - including the heat he’s dropping in the form of Nolan the Ninja, Novellis of Clear Soul Forces and more. As we always do, we talk early days and influences, local DJ’s in Detroit that helped to shape his approach to hip-hop, being a part of the critically acclaimed group The Left with Apollo Brown & Journalist 103 and why he echo’s Apollo’s sentiments around a follow up to 2010’s “Gas Mask”.
