It's hard to overstate the role Bok Bok has had in shaping the sound of the UK underground over the last decade. Along with his Night Slugs label and the effervescing eco-system of artists around it, he has been a master mutator of everything from grime to bass, techno to r&b. Pairing thrilling futurism with innovative functionality has always been his MO, whether DJing, working on his own tunes, or producing for the likes of Warp's Kelela. In March he continued to push on with new label AP Life, which launched with a collection of UK drill and grime instrumentals from Nammy Wams. Bok Bok has always been about the club. Everything he touches is designed to make them as dynamic and interesting as possible. Although those spaces remain off-limits to us for another few weeks, this week's mix will transform any setting into a dance floor with its punchy rhythms and Day-Glo colours. Muscular drums remain a foundation throughout, whether getting funky, broken up or slammed down hard. On top of those, the sleek samples and synths bring a subtly euphoric mood - a perfect tease for the big return that is just around the corner.

Hey there friends! This is Michael Le. Thanks for tuning into another episode of Pass the Mike where I have the pleasure of sharing the narratives of imminent or current medical professionals. In short, my job is to build you a community of mentors from the folks that have come before you. I couldn't be more happy to kick this podcast off with my dear friend, Sophia Nguyen. That's S-O-P-H-I-A N-G-U-Y-E-N. Sophia graduated in 2019 from UCLA with a degree in the Physiological Sciences. Next year, us Californians are going to mourn her transition to Midwestern University in Arizona. As an important aside, Sophia has long renounced her birth certificate name for So Phi Phi and will respond to nothing else. If you can't find her on stage performing for the annual Vietnamese Culture Night, you may find her in a dashing Yellow Polo supporting UCLA Health patients or you might find So Phi Phi serving as a bouncer—letting patients 150 - 175 only into the health fair venue. If you've tried both of those, you might find her screaming volunteers' names asking them to sign a waiver or with her Theta sisters doing some hooligan shtuff or with her brothers and Bok Bok back at home. If all else fails, she is guaranteed to be snacking on popcorn in the corner of the room, dancing to herself. I'll make sure we get these stories out of So Phi Phi because I think she personally is the epitome of work-life balance. I can't think of a person better to exemplify to any and all premeds that you CAN get into medical school AND have a whole lot of fun doing it. You can have your cake AND eat it too, both of which Sophia is guilty of. You can find Sophia if you want to say hello, ask a question or need an organic egg him on sophianguyen97@gmail.com, that's S-O-P-H-I-A-N-G-U-Y-E-N-9-7-AT-G-M-A-I-L-DOT-C-O-M. She's very shy but I'm personally grateful to carve out some time to have a nice conversation with her because she's jam-packed with personality today. Sophia, welcome to the show.

It is a wonder it has taken us this long to get Tom Trago involved in our series. The Dutchman has been a pillar of the Amsterdam scene for years, either as a producer for Rush Hour and a veteran of no fewer than three artist albums, or as a resident at places like the sorely missed Trouw. He also runs his own Voyage Direct label, has worked with everyone form Aardvark to Bok Bok and, of course, played our festival once again this past weekend. Trago’s sound--in both the booth and the studio--is a colourfully eclectic mix of disco and afro, hip hop and jazz, as well as house, techno and electro, and it as charming as the man himself. His two hour session for us is a perfectly soothing selection to get you back into the groove after a full on weekend at the festival. From horizontal ambient and deeply seductive house, the mix stays pretty spaced out and lazy for the first hour, before more driving drums and pumping chords colour the second half. Always warm, human and inviting, it is a suitably personable mix from one of house music’s nice guys.

The 37th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Force Placement (real name Jason James) from the West side of Los Angeles in California, USA. Jason has been DJ'ing regularly around his massive metropolitan hometown since his late teens over a decade ago. He sent us this mix and we liked the selection and felt it added something unique to the series, a vinyl-only mix fusing House & Techno that is deep, rhythmic and strange with lots of spacey melodic tracks scattered throughout. We took out some time to have a brief Q & A with Jason about the mix, how's tricks and what's been happening in the music world over in Los Angeles! Q. Hi Jason! What is the music scene like in LA for Electronica/House/Techno at the moment? It's a massive city so you'd imagine there to be a lot going on? A. The scene is pretty vibrant right now, lots of great underground events and solid bookings every weekend. Recent events that come to mind have had Bok Bok, Jacques Renault, Untold, Max Graef, Gerry Read etc. For a while it was mostly illicit warehouse parties but the cops started busting them more so it's died down a bit in that respect, but still lots of great events at bars/clubs to check out. Q. I read that in LA, the clubs closed at 2am which gave rise to a culture of illegal warehouse parties. Is that what you are referring to that "died down"? A. Yea clubs close at 2. It's state law in California so people threw illegal parties but the LAPD started cracking down on them hard. Resident Advisor did an article about it (http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=25170). They talk about the Omar-S party that got busted, I was there! There were like 20 cop cars and helicopters flying around, shit was crazy! Q. So, have you played at any gigs that got busted? A. Never. But it would be seriously frustrating! I know that it can be pretty devastating for the promoters here too. However, we have a deal worked out with the venue for our Black Lodge parties so we can go past 2. Q. So does this early closure time encourage an after-party culture that spills out into house parties? Does this help relatively unknown DJ's get noticed at after-parties where DJ's/promoters end up after a 2am close? A. Yeah definitely, there is a massive after-hours culture! I suppose it can actually help DJ's to get that initial exposure, more visibility/recognition in the underground scene. Q. Could you say a couple of words about your Black Lodge party you mentioned and how it started? What's the format and music policy? A. Black Lodge was my buddy Vikas Malhotra's (aka Kosmik) concept and he asked me to help out. He's a good friend of mine from when I lived in Santa Barbara. The music format is primarily underground house/techno music. We try to emphasize playing vinyl there too. The venue is a very unique one-of-a-kind space, it looks like a haunted library or something! It can only fit like 50 people max, a very intimate space ideal for what we are trying to do. Q. To you personally, is the vinyl format important? Do you think that vinyl DJ'ing is getting more popular in LA like it certainly is over here in Europe, or is it in decline maybe? A. I enjoy the challenge of playing vinyl, but the format isn't important. The selection is more important than what you use in my view. There are some cool record stores here but I'm not sure if I'd say it's getting more popular. Sadly a few established stores have closed here in recent years but a few new ones have emerged too, however few of them specialize in dance music. Q. I noticed that you play regularly at that venue called Complex in LA and have a gig there tonight, right? A. Yea I've been getting some cool gigs there recently! I'm opening for Ital (Planet Mu) and Aurora Halal (Mutual Dreaming) tonight. I'm also playing a party at Complex on 30th April for an event called "That's Deck", opening for Stefan Ringer (NDATL, CGI Recordings), Cromie (Peach) and An Expresso (L2S Recordings) (info on that here: http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=28935). April's shaped up to be a busy month for sure! Q. Have you ventured into production works at all? A. Sure have, I have been experimenting with making music since I was 16 but only recently started taking it more seriously. I have just put a track out called Neopolitan on this LP that is available to download here: https://la909.bandcamp.com/album/l-a-909-friends-vol-1 Q. Thanks for the mix, the track (which is ace!) and the chat, hope tonight goes well bro! Any final words about the mix? A. Thanks! Right now I've got my decks set up in my kitchen and I recorded this mix while sipping tea and baking some tilapia. Vinyl-only. Please enjoy, thanks! Jason James, April 2015 @forceplacement ===== Full tracklist for this mix coming soon, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments in the meantime.

Shock World Service 045 We Are The Moment, Built To Last by Cian Ó Cíobháin 18/01/12 Galway, Ireland 1. Arthur Russell – A Little Lost Another paeon to absent love from the cherub-voiced cellist. 2. Destroyer – Chinatown Sounds like Paddy McAloon from Prefab Sprout duetting with Belle & Sebastian-era Isobel Campbell. 3. Ultra Vivid Scene feat Kim Deal – Special One A huge favourite from my teenage years, this one had all but disappeared from my life, only re-discovering it on YouTube last summer. 4. Burt Bacharach – Something Big One of the most joyous songs I had the fortune of hearing last year, it's from a 1973 LP called ‘Living Together' which is not too shabby at all. I only wish the song would to on for longer. 5. Family Of Eve – Please Be Truthful 1979 debut single from Pittsburg outifit that first came to prominence VIA Keb Darge's first ‘Legendary Deep Funk' compilation on BBE. 6. Laura Lee – Don't Leave Me Starving For Your Love A rarely heard, but utterly beguiling, Holland-Dozier-Holland composition from Chicago-born Laura Lee. 7. Mystery Jets – The Tale From an American-only release, the ‘Flotsam & Jetsam' EP from 2007, this sounds like three songs rolled into one. 8. Da Luniz – I Got Five On It Bit of a worldwide hit this one in 1995, a quick Google reveals this nugget of information: “ ‘I got 5 on it' is a phrase meaning to pay half for a dime bag (a 10 dollar bag of weed) with another person.” 9. Aaliyah – More Than A Woman I occasionally go through stages of suddenly loving genres that I may not have cared for too much in the recent past. It happened with country last summer with R'n'b. 10. Oneohtrix Point Never – Child Soldier Daniel Lopatin's new LP ‘Replica' as O.P.N. reveals an artist totally letting loose in his new studio. 11. Virginia Astley – A Father Kind of reminds me of Julee Cruise (especially her ‘Twin Peaks' songs) . . from Virgina's 1986 LP ‘Hope In A Darkened Heart'. 12. Scritti Politti – Absolute From 1985's ‘Cupid & Psyche 85' LP, Gart Greenside sounds utterly at one with dreamy post new wave synth-pop. 13. Belbury Poly – The Willows Jim Jupp, who runs the Ghost Box label, has released many records under the Belbury Poly moniker. 14. Disco Inferno – Love Stepping Out Disco Inferno were formed in Essex in the late 80s and though they released a few LPs & EPs in the early to mid-90s, they remained completely off my radar until One Little Indian compiled ‘The Five EPs' (which features this beauty) last year. 15. Kitchens Of Distinction - Drive That Fast Every podcast needs an anthem that makes you want to roll down the car windows & crank up the volume. 16. Sascha Funke – Now You Know From the ‘Funkt EP,' released on Bpitch Control in 2002, this manages to sound like Ricardo Villalobos reworking The Postal Service, while still finding a cameo for Fritz Kalbrenner on vox. 17. Joy O – Sicko Cell Slowly crept up to become an unlikely anthem in the clubs last year, with strong support from Pearson Sound, Jackman, Loefah & Bok Bok. 18. Westbam & Nena – Oldschool, Baby (Piano Mix) “We are the moment, built to last”. Breathless sun-kissed, Italo-influenced classic from 2002, featuring none other than the voice of yer wan who sang '99 Luftballons'.

Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe. Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth.

But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass. It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series. You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label.

Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes). As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards.

Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementJoe bought his first decks after moving to Manchester in the late 90s to pursue the acid house dream. With a schedule that involved clubbing three nights at week, he was soon running his own night, ‘Milk’ at the New Order owned Dry Bar, while DJing at other clubs around the city and purveying an ADD-ish eclecticism that had been born out of bleary nights watching the young Chemical Brothers at the Heavenly Social. Moving back to London, he started writing for DJ Mag, alongside a ‘proper’ job, was a founding member of a well-known music website, before the greedy machination of one of its members taught him the value of having a contract (though possibly not written on a napkin), and continued to put on parties in a variety of clubs and bars.Following a hugely successful warehouse party in East London to mark the momentous arrival of 07.07.07, he began running a new series of nights, under the name ‘No Way Back’, at a grimy all-night pub in Brixton, moving through a series of bigger venues, and playing guest slots at clubs like Trailer Trash and Neon Noise alongside Fischerspooner, until finding himself running the lounge for Chew the Fat! at The End (including, appropriately enough, on 08.08.08).With a hugely successful room, helped in a no small part by a large old school jungle collection, a job and residency swiftly followed, with gigs alongside Hervé, Tittsworth, Duke Dumont, Riton, Jack Beats, Trevor Loveys, Drums of Death, Raffertie, Reso, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990, and more, even standing in as a fake Fake Blood to a packed Corsica Studios when the real Fake Blood failed to show. And summer 2009 saw gigs at Glade and Notting Hill Carnival.Leaving Chew the Fat! to become an editor at DJ Mag, Joe now has a new party in the offing and is currently in the studio with Dan Cat, who reached the heights of Pete Tong Essential New tune under his previous guise of Cheshire Catz.www.myspace.com/joerobotssoundcloud.com/joe-roberts

Lower End Spasm fam (dot-alt.blogspot.com) presents Blogariddims 29: 69 Allstars - a mix of classic grime riddims. "Before the ego of MCs took over radio was all about rollage - a steady, nervous momentum. A momentum we've tried to respect by matching grime's frenetic energy - that's why you've got 69 tracks in 60 minutes. The mix is largely instrumental not because we want to devoice a voice-heavy genre, but because grime started as club."
