Today's episode features a Japanese Music Producer, Founder of Hydeout Productions, DJ, composer, arranger, crossing into different genres like jazz rap, down tempo, atmospheric instrumental. His collaboration with the highly regarded Samurai Champloo OST in 2004 pushed his name to the stratosphere. He was a quiet Hip Hop ambassador known to his close people as Seba Jun but known to the world as Nujabes. As an introvert, his life revolved around music. His ability to listen, reconstruct samples and direct musicians to make what most Nujabes stans would call "classic music" and I agree. He was a crate diggers owning record stores around Japan and into the musical influences of the 1980s and 1990s. He worked with incredible emcees like Funky DL, Sustantial, Shing02, Cise Star, Pase Rock, Fat Jon, and many more to include instrumentalist like Uyama Hiroto.Once you press play and let it ride with whatever your doing, you will feel it. His music was about feeling, and documenting what was going on in the world. And in most parts, his music was about releasing feelings as well. I discovered his music years ago and had the privilege to see his impact first had in the land of the rising sun Tokyo Japan. Born in Tokyo, raised in Tanzania, England, and Japan, Shing02 came up in the independent SF Bay Area hip hop scene in the mid-'90s. He has released numerous recordings showcasing his bilingual MC skills, most notably the Luv(sic) series with the late producer Nujabes. we talk about his family history going back hundreds of years and the experiences and encounters that have shaped him to be the amazing visual artist he is today. We bring it back to Telegraph Ave, his days at University and linking up with hip hop artists in the 90s via mentorship and his time working with Nujabes. Born in Tokyo, raised in Tanzania, England, and Japan, Shing02 came up in the independent SF Bay Area hip hop scene in the mid '90s. He has released numerous recordings showcasing his bilingual MC skills, most notably the Luv(sic) series with the late producer Nujabes. we talk about his family history going back hundreds of years and the experiences and encounters that have shaped him to be the amazing visual artist he is today. In this episode of the Japan Station podcast we're going deep into the world of J-pop with Dr. Capital. Dr. Jonathan Patterson is an Assistant Professor of Popular Music in the Division of Jazz Studies of the University of North Texas College of Music. Also known by the stage name Dr. Capital, he is a composer, singer, guitarist, and an all-around expert on Japanese popular music who has been performing music in Japan for around two decades. Over the course of his career he has worked with a long list of prominent figures in Japan's music industry, including Shing02, Ayaka, Miho Nakayama, Angela Aki, and many more. Dr. Capital also runs a popular YouTube channel. In his videos Dr. Capital performs acoustic guitar covers of well-known J-pop songs, as well as explains the many musical concepts within them--and he does this completely in Japanese. Kaigen and Meiso are hip-hop artists and long time collaborators. They released their first project nealy 10 years ago and have been working together every since. Kaigen is a Tokyo based emcee/producer and all around creative artist. Meiso is a Hawaii/Tokyo based MC and label owner. Later that night Shingo performed an incredible live-show with his band The Chee-Hoos as part of their Nujabes tribute concerts. Shing02, an integral piece to the seminal Bay Area underground hip-hop community of the late 90's, is both an accomplished visual artist as well as writer/producer. Robbie and Abby Martin host a special 90 minute edition of Media Roots Radio covering Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster with guests Shing02 and Anthony Bisset. Shing02 and Anthony cover the state of the reactors, the radiation levels, dangers and breakdown of compounds, government cover ups and media disinformation, the science of nuclear energy and how one can prepare for a nuclear fallout. Anthony Bisset is a composer and improviser working in all genres of electronic music who designs his own software and hardware for live performance. Since 2007 he has been a part time resident and regular performer in Tokyo and has played shows from Hokkaido to the Southern islands. Having his extended family and friends in Tokyo threatened by nuclear fallout, Anthony has been heavily researching Fukushima since the March 11th disaster. A consummate infophile this is not his first encounter with nuclear science. More about him at www.anthonybisset.com Shing02 is a rap activist, peace advocate, and inventor. Born in Tokyo 1975, Shing02 landed in the SF Bay Area at the age of 15. He became immersed in the local hip-hop scene that launched dozens of acts worldwide, and in '96, Shingo’s music made its way back to Japan. He gained a lot of support from his homeland and partnered with Mr. Higo of Mary Joy Recordings. He currently lives in LA and works with artists on both sides of the Pacific.
