Back in the springtime we came across Fr1th who's a London based producer and newly signed member of the acclaimed label Mello Music Group. We began digging into his back catalogue and were drawn to his melodic sound selection and incredible arrangements within his work. So after sending him an email on a whim we were very pleased to get to chat with him on the podcast this week for episode 228! Fr1th told us about his beginnings in production learning FL Studio in 2003 and how he eventually met a lot of awesome collaborators locally and beyond that helped shape and refine his style. He told us more about how he got connected with the team at Mello Music Group and what that opportunity has meant to his career as he recently re-released his 2020 project “Mind Blossom” with accompanying visuals and behind the scenes content all of which have gotten an incredible response from listeners. We also discussed what live shows have meant to him and how developing his stage presence for an in person atmosphere has really benefited him to showcase his works in a different way. We're very thrilled to have made this connection with Fr1th and are very excited to hear his next project when it releases as well as continuing to touch base with him moving forward!Tune into Anthony's Twitch stream every Tuesday at 6PM eastern time for in depth content ideas, strategies, music tips and more!

At this point, hip-hop artist Jabee is an Oklahoma City icon, but it's about time to take his profile to a more national level. Thankfully he is in good company to do just that. Earlier this year Jabee announced his signing to hip-hop's prestige indie music label, Mello Music Group. His first release with MMG, the eight-song mini-album The Spirit Is Willing But The Flesh Is Weak—featuring a guest verse by underground rap sensation Quelle Chris and production from the likes of Conductor Williams, Evidence, and Apollo Brown—debuted on streaming services this past Friday. Jabee, fresh off a West Coast flight following a marathon weekend at his Peace Needs OKC conference that included the legendary Chuck D as speaker, graced the Oklahoma Today Podcast with an interview previewing the new release.   Also on this week's episode, the editors get cute about their favorite at-home animals, and podvents shows us why Merle Haggard will now forever be an Okie in Muskogee. Send us a Text Message. "Everything I make, I try to make it my favorite album of all time."Simplicity is genius. Great artists can make the ostensibly impossible seem effortless. It's in this rarefied air where you'll find Detroit's Apollo Brown, constantly conjuring fresh innovations out of a tried-and-true formula. For the last decade, the Mello Music Group artist has singularly re-defined and expanded the foundation of what boom bap production can sound like in the 21st Century.Just consider the revered legends that have collaborated on full-length albums with him: Rass Kass (“Blasphemy”), Guilty Simpson (“Dice Game,”) Skyzoo (“Easy Truth Sessions”), Big Pooh (“Words Paint Pictures”) and O.C. (“Trophies.”) No less than DJ Premier declared the latter “hip-hop for the people,” naming “Trophies” the best album of 2012.This is the tradition that Apollo Brown triumphantly upholds: the head-nodding, screwface-inducing, soul-replenishing lineage of Primo and Pete Rock, J Dilla and Large Professor, Mobb Deep and DJ Muggs. He makes music for old and young heads—bone bruising beats that summon visceral images of back alley brawls in '81, pool hall melees, and metropolitan griminess. An East Coast sound with a midwestern mentality, channelling the marrow-freezing chill of the wind fleeing Lake Michigan.Everyone from Danny Brown to Chance The Rapper, Freddie Gibbs to Masta Ace, Black Milk to Oddisee have spit bars over his beats. Don't sleep on his projects with The Left, Ugly Heroes, and Hassaan Mackey, or his several acclaimed instrumental albums. Amounted together, it gives Apollo Brown a body of work that lives up to the legacy of the older gods. The explanation why is pretty simple. If you still have any doubts, all you need to do is press play.Buy Apollo Brown's Music HereFollow Apollo Brown on IG HereSupport the Show.WEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

This week we are going to the movies... actually we're discussing rap portrayals in the movies, a somewhat fraught subject. We were inspired to think about rap on the silver screen by our guest, Marv Won. Among other accolades, Marv was famously part of the movie 8 Mile. We enjoyed our conversation with this Detroit battle rap mainstay who recently signed with Mello Music Group and has a new album entitled "I'm Fine, Thanks For Asking. " One of the highlights of our chat was Mar's lightning-quick assembly of his all-time Detroit MC Mount Rushmore. In the intro segment, DBRP hosts David Ma, Demone Carter and Nate LeBlanc riff about rap movies, verisimilitude, decrepit warehouses, strange bedfellows, and much much more. Big thanks to our theme song composer Cutso. DBRP is mixed by Taylor Weng. Dad Bod Rap Pod is probably the 4th or 5th most popular podcast on the Stony Island Audio network.

Keepin It Real w/Caramel had a fun and entertaining conversation with SJ Hazim. SJ is a very outgoing and passionate person. He loves what he does for people, and he gives out great energy in the world. He shines with positivity on everyone he meets. SJ Hazim is the man behind the writing and production for the 70th Brown vs. Board compilation song “Levitate”, which includes over 20 talents from the Topeka, KS area. Picture the style of “We Are The World”. Topeka, KS played a crucial role as one of the key locations where the Brown vs. Board cases originated. African American families, such as Oliver Brown, had a daughter who was denied enrollment in a nearby white school. Over time, the Brown vs. Board decision became a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement, which helped lead to further legal and social changes for equality. In 1954, the case of Brown vs. Board of Education was a landmark in the Supreme Court ruling that declared the racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This was considered one of their most celebrated victories in a long time. To this day, it remains one of the most defining moments in US history. Brown vs. Board was a coordinated group of five lawsuits against school districts in Kansas, South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Some of those featured on the song are Brendon Elliott, a violinist and Julliard graduate who has earned distinction through his performances with the New York Philharmonic and as a guest soloist with the Virginia and Richmond Symphony Orchestras. -Bizzy gained recognition in the hip-hop community as he was featured on Tech N9ne's track “Erbody But Me” on the 2016 album. This was a pivotal moment for Bizzy and helped him become a figure in the midwest rap scene. - Stik Figa is a Topeka, KS based rapper who blends a southern style with a midwest influence. His notable accomplishments include collaborations with Mello Music Group and appearances on Shade 45. -Roger Ortega is a spotify-verified and Grammy Voting R&B/Pop Artist. Roger has had the opportunity to open for artists such as Jay Z, Color Me Badd, Aaron Carter, Otown and DJ Pauly D to name a few. His successes include his first album “RnBPoPWrtyr” reaching #62 on the itunes chart and his second album “The Lottery” reaching #8. - Lamont Jackson is a Topeka, KS police officer with a love for music. His singing and songwriting talents have given him the ability to showcase his talents through performances and karaoke nights. Most recently, his enthusiasm for music led to viral fame with a “police car karaoke video” that caught the attention of Kelly Clarkson, and he was invited as a guest on her show. This is just the start for SJ, in May 2024 he will be releasing his album “Syncronicty in Motion” as well as his Hip Hop Play “Rhythm of Insight: A Hip Hop Odyssey in Verse”, featuring 10 classic hip hop beats with his own lyrics as a 50 years of Hip Hip Salute which will have multiple volumes. SJ can also be heard on Roger Ortegas “Back To Kansas (Top City Remix)”. Known as a staple in Topeka, KS, he is ready to let the rest of the world know who he is. Billi Free & The Lasso - "Thrive, Despite" from the 2022 album Holy Body Roll on Mello Music Group. Holy Body Roll, released this March, is a collaborative record between New Mexico vocalist A. Billi Free and Michigan producer The Lasso that leans into the duo's love for funk, pop, hip hop, and R&B for a record that's free-flowing and boundaryless. Joined by The Lasso's studio team made up of saxophonist The Saxsquatch, cellist Jordan Hamilton, and pianist Grayson Nye, Holy Body Roll is meant to serve as a “groove-filled guidebook for healing, the soundtrack to help you move from tear-streaming breakdown to full-body boogie.” Our Song of the Day, “Thrive, Despite,” embodies this both in title and spirit. Led by a jazzy piano line from Nye, the song morphs into a downtempo R&B track that has incredible warmth as A. Billi Free croons, “I know you carrying this weight /This thang so deep can't touch the base /After you take a little break, get up and face another day.” “We've been building this project since late 2020,” explained Free in an interview. “We used this record to process difficult personal/collective feelings and embody the celebration of little victories with honest lyrics, layered vocals and a unique sonic homage to R&B, funk, rock and pop using our shared love of hip-hop as a foundation.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome or welcome back! On this episode, I sat down with Prolific Queens rapper Homeboy Sandman. Boy Sand was born and raised in Queens, citing his parents as incredibly helpful and determined to make ends meet. He traveled all throughout the Northeast attending schools, including UPENN, before officially entering the rap game. His 2007 EP, Nourishment, would operate as a jumping off point for his career. As he describes, from 2007 to 2009, he “couldn't lose”. From acknowledgments by mainstream radio and news publications to a plethora of co-signs, it's easy to see why he says as much. In 2011, Sandman signed a deal with Stones Throw records. Around this same time, he speaks about his ego prevented him from meeting Stones Throw royalty MF DOOM. Sandman also speaks candidly about discovering the kind of rapper and person that he wanted to be. He continued pumping out releases in the early 2010's including “First of a Living Breed”, “The Good Sun” and “ Hallways”. In 2014, Sandman shot a video for his song “Call to Arms”, which is how our paths first crossed. He shelved the video for 5 whole years as he contemplated what he was really doing for the kids invovled. Sandman has always been entertained by the questions of human nature, especially how they pertain to black livelihood. In the same year, he published “Black People Are Cowards”, an op-Ed for Gawker in the wake of the Donald Sterling case. The piece generated lots of buzz on the internet, but no action which was a loss in Sandman's mind. We also cross referenced the aftermath of that case with the NBA players' recent actions of social justice and how they affect us. Sandman truly truly loved music, which he writes to feel alive and releases because he wants to. His most recent two projects “Don't Feed the Monster” and “Dusty” are incredible installments to an already loaded discography. Sandman and Stones Throw amicably split and he has since struck a partnership with Mello Music Group. His recent single “Go Hard” is the lead track off of his upcoming project “ Anjelitu”, releasing August 6th. Recorded: 6. 27. 21

The Lasso - "No Illusions (feat. Ill Camille & A. Billi Free)" from the 2021 album 2121 on Mello Music Group. Detroit-based producer Andy Catlin records under the name The Lasso, an apt title as he's able to round up a dozen guest rappers and vocalists for his latest album 2121. (Today's Song of the Day brings in the vocal talents of New Mexico-based vocalist A. Billi Free and Los Angeles-based rapper Ill Camille.) These collaborators received instrumental demos created throughout 2019 and early 2020, and, as The Lasso toldBandcamp, “the finished product wasn’t something I would have ever thought of or composed.” “Some of the harmonies, nobody thought of them [first],” he continued, “because I sent the track out to three people at the same time, and they didn’t hear each other. They sent their work back to me, and I used one of each of their notes.”  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
