This is always a good time to reflect and get excited about a new calendar year. To help put the industry into perspective and to think about how to strengthen beer in the year to come, I've asked three smart and plugged in folks to share their insights, knowledge, and even offer some homework. If you're a small brewer navigating these tough craft beer waters, there's a lot you can learn and hopefully take to heart. Guests:Steve Parkes. On this episode of Wild & Uncut, we join you from SCI's 51st convention in Nashville, TN! Kristy Titus sits down with Dan Brooks, Rachel Ahtila & Madie Demaske. Dan joined Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) in 2015 and has over thirty years' experience in wildlife conservation and education. He was initially hired by SCIF as a Program Specialist for the Humanitarian Service programs. Dan was promoted in 2016 to the Business Operations Manager to administer the International Wildlife Museum in Tucson, Arizona and continued to manage the Humanitarian Service Programs for SCIF. He was appointed to the Director of Education for SCIF in 2017. Born and raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, Rachel Ahtila was a “horse-crazy bush kid,” who forged a winding path to becoming one of the most well-known women in hunting. Although she wasn't raised in a hunting community, her parents gave her a loose rein at the wise old age of 11. She then began traveling north for the summers to chase horses at a remote hunting lodge in the mountain valleys of the Muskwa-Kechika. A full-time guide, Rachel is also a public speaker and published writer. In 2013, she was a Prois Award Recipient, and was nominated as the youngest woman to be on the Board of Directors for the Wild Sheep Society of British Columbia in 2014. Madeline was born and raised in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Her passion for hunting and the outdoors developed at a young age and has become a driving factor in her legal career. Madeline's love for the mountains took her to Montana State University where she received undergraduate honors degrees in Agriculture Business and Applied Economics. Madeline continued her education at the University of Kansas where she graduated with a Juris Doctor in May 2021 and became a licensed attorney in the state of Colorado soon after. Since, she has been dedicating her time to the mass denial of Tajikistan Marco Polo Argali import permits, as she has a ram stuck overseas herself. As an avid hunter and conservationist, Madeline offers a unique perspective to wildlife and hunting-related legal issues. She is currently part of SCI's team of staff attorneys as Litigation Associate. We hope you enjoy this episode, as much as we appreciate your support! It's been awhile. Glad to see you back here. Today is a new day. A fresh start to a new you. A great time to ask the question, “Am I awake to this moment? To the here and now? To this moment?” Henry David Thoreau reminds us that the vast majority of civilization leads quiet lives of desperation. Or maybe if he were around today, he would say “noisy lives of desperation” Lives spent trying to be anywhere but here, now. Today I would like to invite you to remember that all we have is this moment. Yesterday is gone, a thing of the past, and tomorrow is no guarantee, a thing of the future. Everything that has ever happened has occurred in this moment. This moment is where the adventure begins, so why try to live anywhere else? Here at Mountain Zen Den we are all about connecting with Nature for Mindfulness and Personal Growth. By letting go of stress and finding joy in the moment. And happiness in the simple gifts of Nature. And the way we do that is by waking up and becoming Aware. By getting out of our insulated, isolated shells, and immersing ourselves in Nature. We begin by asking ourselves, “Am I connected and aware of this time and place in the natural world?” Here is one way you can tell how aware and connected you really are. Answer these simple questions. “What is currently happening in the natural world around me?” “What is the Season?” “What is the weather doing? How about the temperature? Are there clouds? What kind of clouds? Is there a breeze? What about the moon? What phase is it in? Is it waxing or waning? Where are Venus, Jupiter and Mars? And the stars… Could I point to Polaris, the North Star in the night sky and identify and name 5 other constellations from where I am standing?” These are simple and telling questions to help get us started to get an idea of how awake and connected we really are. To creation. Here are a few more. “How about the plants and wildlife around me? What is in bloom right now? What birds are currently ‘in season'”? How often do we take the time to notice the natural world all around us? The “Real World” as I like to remind myself. We are probably very aware of the current state of the political world in society and culture – the latest news, politics, economic financial markets of growth and recession, of gas and grocery prices, and even sports and celebrity status. But how awake and are we to the physical planet we live on? How about our internal world? Our personal state of being? Our self-awareness and consciousness of our connection not only to ourselves and our immediate family and relationships, but to every other thing in the Universe… the stars, rocks, plants, trees, and wildlife, down to even the unseen – molecules, atoms and subatomic particles? Why is all this important? Because disconnection with the world leads to disconnection with ourselves. And disconnection from self leads to depression, mental illness, and a host of diseases… The Native Americans had a word for this connection — “Hunkapi”. Meaning, “I am one with everything”. I was so inspired by this concept that I named our mustang Hunkapi. (Or “Huni for short). It is humbling, and alternatively comforting and reassuring to step back and become aware of the fact that we are truly one with everything. Buddhism teaches “non-duality” — that flowers and garbage are both organic in nature. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, “Looking deeply into the nature of a flower, you can see the presence of the compost and the garbage; but don't be afraid! You are a gardener, and you have in your hands the power to transform garbage into flowers, into fruit, into vegetables.” But you can only do this if you are awake. Christianity teaches that God the Creator spoke the Universe into existence, and by doing so created everything — EVERYTHING — and then called us into co-creation with Him to “be fruitful and multiply”, and to “have dominion over the Earth”. Not in a self-serving sense, exploiting Nature as a resource for personal gain, but as benevolent care-takers, lovingly, and wisely nurturing and caring for each and every one of its members. But none of this matters or means anything if we are not awake to “The Call”, and mindful of our place in the Universe. M.H. Clark says it well in the priceless little book, “Outside/In: Questions, Quotes, and Activities to Connect You to Nature” – “You know the feeling. You get it when you are standing on the shore, or staring at the sky, or when the storm is passing over, or the season is changing, or the flower you have been watching is finally bursting into bloom. It's the feeling of touching something that is huge and real and true. It's the feeling of experiencing the wildest, most beautiful parts of the world, and at the same time, experiencing the wildest, most beautiful parts of you. Because to connect to nature is to connect to yourself. And every time you do, you connect to your mind, your creativity, your senses, your well-being, your health. …open the door, in all kinds of ways, and let the outside in.” [“Awake” by Peter Mayer] If you were with us back in the fall of 2022, this isn't the first time you've heard this song. We had singer songwriter Peter Mayer with us in Episode 127 talking about living an awakened life on planet Earth. As we were bouncing ideas around Peter and I discussed the possibility of holding a Mindfulness in Nature Retreat for the purpose of going deeper within to connect with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us. Well my friends, I am pleased to tell you that this idea has come to fruition. We are scheduled to do this very thing this October 13 through 15 here in Estes Park, Colorado. You are invited to pend 3 days in the Rocky Mountains with special guest Peter Mayer exploring his songs as vehicles for discussion and contemplation, and celebrating our kinship with Nature. Presented by Mountain Zen Den, this retreat is all about exploring the art of being fully present and connecting with Nature. The goal is to introduce and facilitate a Return to Mindfulness in Nature Awareness whereby, when we return home, we do so more deeply connected to our truest selves, more richly satisfied with our lives, more energized, confident and purposeful in our living, more creative and productive, and happier human beings (the by-product). We want to do this by placing ourselves in an environment that lends itself to our ability to slow down, get silent, be fully present, and Listen. We'll be sharing more on this in the next couple of weeks, but if this sounds like something you would be interested in please reach out and let me know, and we will send you more information as it becomes available. It would be so good to see you there, and connect with each other for a whole weekend in the beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains! Stay tuned for more info! As we wrap up today's show I'd like to share a thought from the late writer and poet, Max Ehrmann. He beautifully reminds us, “You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars.” Thanks so much for being here today! I look forward to seeing you again next time and invite you to remember, Life is a gift. Nature's a gift. And you are a gift back to the world! Go live a beautiful life my friend…

Dreama Walton is an experienced mountain athlete with hundreds of miles spent in the Alps, multiple ultra-marathons in the desert landscapes of the Canary Islands, and day to day training in the upper altitudes of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, she is well aware of the kind of innate desire and commitment it takes to be an endurance athlete. She knows what an important role diet before, during, and after training and competition play in overall wellbeing. She has experienced firsthand the limitations placed on her with poor hydration, using ill designed equipment, and a lack of a level head when things don't go as planned. She has accepted that running during bad weather is her way of paying dues for running during the good days. Running on no sleep rewards her by letting her see pieces of this planet that most people will only have the opportunity to see on the discovery channel. Pushing her body and mind allows her to see what the human animal is capable of when she reaches the end of a challenging race. The elation she feels when the race is done is the reward for hours, days, and weeks of training. This is why she loves ultra-running so much. It allows you to see that the only limits we have as humans we place on ourselves. Dreama is also a mother to an amazing little girl and loves showing her that we can do difficult things and that if she wants something bad enough, she too can put in the work to achieve it. On this podcast Dreama talks about some of the struggles she has faced in her life and how they shaped her strong work ethic as a runner and in life. We also discuss balancing being a single parent and chasing big goals. Dreama is a very strong mountain climber so of course we had to talk nutrition. We felt so inspired after talking to Dreama. She has found a nice balance and figured out how to keep the focus on happiness and love. We are excited to follow along with her summer adventures! IG- @dreamawalton

With roots embedded in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and a sound unhinged in the capital of Texas, Shovelin Stone is a music almost as unique as the friendship it stems from. A shared passion for old-timey bluegrass is what brought Makenzie and Zak together, but it's the unknowing joy for the moment and the obsession with the complications that life brings that continues to push the duo forward. Within heartfelt lyrics and a unique musical composition the indie folk sound that projects from these two is not only going to get the audience thinking but on their feet. With the addition of multi-talented bassist, cellist and mandolin player Russick Smith, and rock drummer Brett Throgmorton, Shovelin Stone is gearing up to release their sophomore album recorded deep in the Appalachian Mountains with Grammy winning producer Chance McCoy of the Old Crow Medicine Show. With songs about longing, love, and the hunger to be heard in this big world, it is hard not to relate to these four on their quest for success. The road is winding but one thing is for sure that with Shovelin Stone at the wheel it's going to be a wild ride. Having just released their first album recorded by Grammy-winning producer P.J. Olsson of the Alan Parsons Live Project, Shovelin Stone's music is a blend of Americana and roots story-telling, with melodic pop-sensibility. Music fans can either dive deep into each story, sing along or dance to no end. Erik and Ben have known each other since the late 90's while attending High School in Heidelberg, Germany. Their lives have had similar trajectories such as serving in the US military, working in the Oil and Gas industries overseas, and now both active in local politics. This interview was intended to talk with Erik about his upbringing and bring more nuance to some of the positions he is running on. We had an hour with Erik and intend to get him back on the show to discuss other matters. By Mary Lindow Last year on December 21st 2020 (which was the 1st Day of Winter) Steve and I drove to pick up salads for our dinner. It had been a challenging month having just had his Mother pass into heaven while in WuhanCovid-19 lockdowns in a nursing facility. To be honest, we were a little weary and tender in heart, and still had preparations to do for our Family Christmas Day dinner and celebration with our Son Joel and his wife Angela and our 4 Grandchildren. Our youngest son Tim and his wife Liz were in Texas with her family. This had also been during the most severe time of lockdowns and restrictions in our State. Everything felt hard, and dark, and mean. As we were driving away after picking up salads, my sister texted and asked if we were going to look for the “Christmas Star”, Or, the two planet convergence taking place that evening at dusk. I had wanted to see this and had forgotten! So we aimed the car West and watched the sky! We live at an altitude of 5290 feet above sea level and have a glorious view of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. At this specific time of year the sun sits at a very low angle in the western sky and when it dips behind the mountains, there is an almost greenish-aqua reflective light, and at 5:15 MDST we saw the "Christmas Star" or two planets very closely spaced together (to human eyes) start to take shape in the Western sky. We quickly drove to a favorite hilltop location, not too far from our home where we often go to walk and enjoy a complete 360-degree view of our surrounding area and state. We thought that at night and away from city lights we'd have a great place to see this phenomenon and view it away from too many people. This event marked the first time since 1623 that the two planets Saturn and Jupiter have passed this close to one another and also marked the nearly 800 years since the planets aligned at night. As a result, some have referred to the planetary alignment as forming a "Christmas star," in reference to the Star of Bethlehem, since the event falls only a few days before Christmas. As we drove in thinking we'd take the dirt road up to the hill where there was a parking area, all around us there were HUNDREDS of people parked on the dirt driveway up the hill and on the side streets of the neighborhood surrounding it! HUNDREDS of people were standing on the hill, looking Westward and upward, looking for the "Christmas Star". The most unusual thing was taking place though. There was a hushed "awe" in this big crowd. People were either talking low or they were whispering, as if this was a sacred moment not to be disrespected by loud noises. No one was talking on his or her cell phones! WOW! You could feel the questions and the cries and thoughts of those standing there watching and looking up into the sky. You could sense the desperation of many wanting to know what to do in such and strange and dark time on planet earth and wondering why this event was taking place at this time! We drove around the entirety of the hill's lower neighborhood road, looking in amazement at all of the people, and a sudden wave of what I would call "travail" moved me to tears and prayer. Steve and I began to cry out the Father to touch the souls of those looking up into the sky, knowing that all of them are fully aware of the troubled days that they were living in. We prayed that they would risk and speak from their weary hearts to the God who hung those radiant planets that were glowing in the sky, just for them, just at this very moment in time. God SO Loves the World! He sent his Son... …So the world might know His full expression of deep commitment to the people He created with the tips of His fingers and the breath of His being. We saw more than just the "Star" that night! We saw people, engaging in wonder! Of course we know it wasn't "THE" Christmas Star shining so very brightly in the sky, on the longest and darkest day/night of the year! (The Winter Solstice), but doesn't the Lord create things that would show signs and wonders in the heavenlies? WHY DID GOD ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN THAT NIGHT, DURING THE CUSTOMARY SEASON ON EARTH WHERE PEOPLE CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST, WHEN THE EARTH WAS IN SUCH TURMOIL? (And still is!) Because He knows that if He can use something to draw people to himself, He will do it! Psalm 57:10-11 says, “Your love is so extravagant it reaches to the heavens; your faithfulness so astonishing it stretches to the sky! Lord God, be exalted as you soar throughout the heavens. May your shining glory be shown in the skies! Let it be seen high above all the earth!” Of course it's was not the actual date of the birth of Jesus Christ in December, nor was this the actual star that was seen by the shepherds and Wise men. But God knows mankind knows the stories and that there was a Star to guide them, so, He wastes nothing in order to draw all men to himself. "This is what I will do in the last days— I will pour out MY Spirit on everybody and cause your sons and daughters to prophesy, and your young men will see visions and your old men will experience dreams from God. The Holy Spirit will come upon all my servants, men and women alike, and they will prophesy. I will reveal startling signs and wonders in the sky above, and mighty miracles on the earth below. - Acts 2:17 -19 These planets would be closest to each other in the sky on Dec. 21, appearing only a tenth of a degree apart but they would remain in close alignment for a few days and would be easily visible to the naked eye when looking toward the slight southwest west just after sunset on first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. NOW! THIS IS THE PART WHERE THE KINDNESS AND SUPERNATURAL TOUCH OF GOD, TOOK PLACE FOR STEVE AND I! We had had a very intense and sad family upset with some stressed out relatives the night before and had done a bit of damage control and counseling of everyone, but our hearts were hurting over words that had been spoken and the pain that they had caused for many. (Holidays can often bring out the dysfunctions and anger in some people who tend to not address personal issues.) We gently but firmly coached a few involved to see things more accurately and to go and correct there bad choice of words and apologize. They did, but the upset left everyone feeling grieved and raw. On Christmas Eve we like to take a tray of home baked treats to a few of our neighbors and wish them a Joyful Christmas. I had asked Steve to run a final tray across the street to some neighbors who hadn't been home earlier. As I was standing at the kitchen sink rinsing out a bowl that had held cookie dough, I was talking to the Lord and sharing my heart and sadness with Him about missing my precious Mother in Law, the strangeness of the dark world of a bio-terror weapon that was causing such fear and sickness, and the grief I felt after the tense family situation. I asked Him to pour over Steve and I, his holiness and peace and I asked him to receive an offering of praise out of this sorrow, thanking him for coming to earth as a Savior in such a dark and wicked world. I then had a thought that reminded me, that the “Christmas Star was still visible in the sky on that night and I realized the timing right then would be perfect to view from our front porch. We have this unusual glow in the West in the winter months when the sun is setting and I could see the hue as I walked toward our front door, which has glass in it. As I stepped out onto the porch I could see the two stars, which were a bit more separated at this point, but absolutely clear. What took place next was something I have no explanation as to where it came from, but the timing of it was so precise and overwhelming that I just stood there in awe, and wept. A CHORUS OF VOICES BEGAN SINGING SILENT NIGHT, Holy Night, Son of God, Loves Pure Light, Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of Redeeming Grace, Jesus Lord at thy birth, Jesus Lord at Thy Birth. There were no instruments accompanying the voices and it wasn't coming from a house or car nearby. It was out in the open air and reverberating over our street, softly and simply. Steve was coming back across the street about the time the voices began to sing and we stood there on our lawn looking at the stars growing brighter as the sky grew darker, and marveled at this singing. It was just one song. Then no more. (We wondered if there was an outdoor service somewhere and maybe the sound was travelling, but the words were very clear and understandable.) THE MOMENT WAS AS IF WE WERE SUSPENDED IN TIME, and the Presence of God softly fell on us and around us, and soothed our weary souls. We felt His Rest come upon us, and understood the awe that the shepherds must have experienced on that first real nativity night when, “Suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!” -Luke 2:13-14 ALL I CAN TAKE AWAY FROM THESE EVENTS IS THAT GOD ALMIGHTY SEES AND KNOWS EVERY MINUTE DETAIL OF OUR EVERY DAY. He sees our struggles and our sorrows and our love for Him as well! WE ARE IN A TIME LIKE NO OTHER TIME BEFORE ON EARTH, and yet the history of evil men and women attempting to stop the power of the Savior and the King of Heaven moving on earth among His people, has been a non-stop war since time began. We are to be expecting HIS evidence in the earth with great exploits and moves of His Dynamic Force. He is not unaware of our great need for His Help and Protection from filthy and evil men and women who are given over to demonic possession. We live in day and age where it will take Divine Intervention to shake the lukewarm believer out of passivity, and for the world to know that God is Sovereign. BE READY AND EXPECT SIGNS AND WONDERS. Test them. Be alert. Be Ready to tell of the Wonders of His Love. LET EVERY HEART PREPARE HIM ROOM! AND LET HEAVEN AND NATURE SING OF THE WONDERS OF HIS LOVE! Our guests this week are the founders of Talnua Distillery in Arvada Colorado. Patrick and Meagan Miller fell in love with the traditionally Irish, Single Pot Still Whiskey on a honeymoon trip to Ireland. They aimed to recreate the style of whiskey featuring malted and unmalted barley, but with an American twist. Talnua created the first Single Pot Still distillery outside of Ireland. They wanted to bring this style of whiskey to America and imbue it with the nation's terroir while honoring Gaelic distilling traditions, the immigrant soul, and the pioneering spirit of the American people. Enjoy this week's episode and check out this newer style of American Whiskey. We are thankful for everyone who has supported us. A huge shoutout to our growing Patreon Community as well! Cheers,Scott & JakeBourbon Lens About the Talnua Brand: In 2017, we embarked on a mission to define a new chapter of American whiskey with the introduction of our American Single Pot Still Whiskey. True to gaelic-style distilling practices, and unique to the new world, our spirits are produced using a mashbill of raw and malted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills. Located on the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the altitude, changing seasons, crystal clear mountain water, and local barley all lend a uniquely American terroir to our spirits. About the Founders: Patrick Miller Founder, President & Head Distiller: Denver, CO. Patrick began his distilling career at Breckenridge Distillery's Distillation and Production School in June of 2015. In August of 2015, he started working as a Distiller at Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey. After spending nearly three years on recipe development, brewing, and distilling for Talnua, Patrick distilled the first batch of Single Pot Still whiskey in the US in 2018. Prior work includes: Chemist, Fluids Engineer, and Database Systems Manager for oil and gas companies. {Brewing, Distilling, Barreling, Bottling, Sales} Meagan Miller Founder, Vice President & Sales: Denver, CO. Meagan (“the Nose”) has worked with Patrick every step of the way on brewing, distilling, and recipe development. Meagan's background is regulatory compliance, rule making, and policy development. This government affairs experience provides a key asset in working with Federal, State, and Local agencies on permitting, licensing, and reporting. Meagan also provides front of house experience in the service industry and manages day to day distillery business functions. On October 18, 2019, she was elected to serve as the next President of the Colorado Distiller's Guild. Where it all began: In a Galway pub on their honeymoon, Patrick and Meagan sat watching the 2011 Ireland vs. USA Rugby World Cup Match. An eager bartender was thrilled to share with them the first Single Pot Still Whiskey to be released in decades. He regaled them with the history of this nearly extinct style of whiskey and with the passion that one day, Single Pot Still would regain its rightful place on the world stage. The love affair was instant, and the couples' passion was forever ingrained in the story of Single Pot Still Whiskey. With family history rooted in Irish ancestry, the couple returned to Ireland every year and knew that single pot still whiskey would forever be a part of their story. Knowing that Single Pot Still Whiskey was not yet available in the US they set out to create the first Single Pot Still distillery outside of Ireland. They wanted to bring this style of whiskey to America and imbue it with the nation's terroir while honoring Gaelic distilling traditions, the immigrant soul, and the pioneering spirit of the American people. Our Name: Talnua. Our name is born of the Irish-Gaelic words ‘Talamh', meaning ‘Land', and ‘Nua', meaning ‘New'. In a word, it's our story, and tells of our passion for bringing an old-world style of distilling to the new land that is America. Our sigil shows our native Big Horn Ram on the Flatirons of Colorado's Front Range. It is looking back on a triskele moon, which represents the Irish-Gaelic old world, home to the distilling traditions we honor. Faugh a Ballagh. Our motto means ‘Clear the Way' for the new American Single Pot Still and explore a whole new world of character and flavor. Jeff welcomes to the podcast Dr. Paul DeChant, an experienced physician executive, leadership coach, and an expert on physician burnout. We spend a lot of time on the personal aspects of burnout, but not nearly enough time discussing the organizational drivers of burnout. Most people understand the manifestations of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, cynicism, etc.), but not as many people are aware of the drivers that actually lead to burnout. The problem with burnout is not the physician. It’s the workplace. The system blames the physician for burning out when it’s the workplace that is creating the burn out.Paul reminds us that there are six primary drivers that lead to burnout:Driver 1 - Work OverloadDriver 2 - Loss of ControlDriver 3 - Insufficient RewardDriver 4 - Breakdown of CommunityDriver 5 - Absence of FairnessDriver 6 - Conflicting ValuesThe more we understand these drivers, the better we’re able to have a direct impact on our workplace and our overall well-being.Most importantly, learn the drivers of burnout so you can take steps to reduce its manifestations! Paul DeChant, MD, MBA, FAAFPDr. Paul DeChant is an internationally recognized expert on clinician burnout. He speaks from the unique combined experience as a family physician, medical group CEO, and consultant to C-level leaders on engaging physicians to reduce burnout while building the bottom line.In addition to 25 years of practicing family medicine, he has served as:President and Medical Director for High Country Health Care (a group he developed in the Colorado Rocky Mountains),Department director and compensation committee chair for Geisinger Health, Medical director, divisional president, and board member for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation,CEO for the Sutter Gould Medical Foundation,Executive advisor to Simpler Healthcare, andDeputy Chief Health Officer for IBM Watson Health. While he was CEO, the Sutter Gould Medical Foundation achieved the highest overall rating of 170 medical groups in California two years in a row from Consumer Reports and the California Healthcare Performance Information System, and improved provider satisfaction from p45 to p87 in the AMGA Provider Satisfaction Survey. He co-authored, “Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine”, and blogs regularly at www.pauldechantmd.com. In 2016, I found myself in the hospital fighting a life-threatening infection as a result of taking a spill while running in the snow on my favorite trail in the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The doctors were stumped as to what I had gotten myself into and wrote it off as just a fluke. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was it? Was the infection just the result of bad luck or was there more to the story? Links: Core Health Labs Blog Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter
Waffle House is the place to find truckers, late-night drunks, and angels wearing aprons who are just trying to make it in this tough world. Sean tells the story about one such angelic being. Music by Thunder and Rain. Thunder and Rain is a five-piece acoustic Americana band from the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Consisting of acoustic guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle and upright bass, Thunder and Rain seamlessly blends their favorite elements of bluegrass, country, pop and alt-rock to cultivate their own take on the American roots music traditions. Driven by the catchy choruses and dreamy melodies sung by Erinn Peet-Lukes, the band perfectly supports her heartfelt songwriting with strong country grooves, lush harmonies and rich instrumental decoration.

In this weeks episode of THE LIKES OF US podcast, dedicated to Working-Class Life, Art, Politics and Culture, your host, Neil Bradley takes a couple of nice walks with Child-Palmer, visiting the Southbank and Bankside, taking a bitter-sweet trip down memory lane. He also attends a dinner party ('ark at him) where he discusses Brexit and Poor Doors with his fellow guests. And there's also Part 6 of the Great Western Adventure, travelling from Denver, the Mile-High city, to Boulder, where he searches in vain for Mork and Mindy. He takes a trip into the Colorado Rocky Mountains, but gets caught in a snow blizzard, and then travels on to Cheyenne, Wyoming, the Cowboy Capital of America, where he discovers it's all methamphetamine recovery clinics, biker bars, halfway houses and Chatham-like misery. Oh, and he also visits a greasy spoon, where he mistakenly orders a whole cow!

Gerry Spehar's story is unlike many others'. The first part is pretty standard for a young, aspiring musician; he started out on a Stella guitar given to him by a kindly uncle, honed his chops and hit the road. There was some success - he bummed around Europe, playing anywhere that would have him, and he then returned home and formed The Spehar Brothers with his brother George. They worked hard, earned fans and opened for artists like Boz Scaggs and Townes Van Zandt - but Spehar hadn't built the kind of career that prevented him from leaving the popular duo not long after he and his wife Sue learned that they had a second child on the way. Spehar's selfless, courageous choice brought him another kind of success, this time in the banking world, thus providing a stable, financially secure life for his family and affording him the ability to buy a home as well as a nice guitar. He never stopped tinkering with songs, however, and when their kids were grown, Spehar and Sue began to write songs together, filling their compositions with imagery, characters, and real world experiences derived from their formative years growing up in the wilds of the Colorado Rocky Mountains as well as their own adventures traveling in the American West. But even after returning to music in earnest after a three-decade detour and tapping Los Angeles' legendary band I See Hawks in L.A. to flesh out his songs in the studio, Spehar learned that life has a way of changing your tune. Sue passed away from cancer during the final stages of producing his long-awaited comeback album, I Hold Gravity. Her shadow and her spirit loom large over that now-completed album, and Spehar has dedicated his reinvigorated music career to the memory of Sue - his life partner and creative muse. I Hold Gravity is beautiful and fearless and it presents the kind of wisdom and perspective that can only come from someone who has the benefit of experience, and who knows that tragedy is part of life.
