“Princeton” and “music” are often spoken in the same sentence when talking about our guest in today's episode: Sam Spector! If you haven't heard her music before, check her out using the links below and wait until the end of the episode to hear a spinnet of one of her songs! Jani, our in-house musician, also joins, and she, Ava, and Susan draft with Sam their favorite female artists of 2021. The group also discusses Sam's recent musical successes. Speaking of which, GO SEE HER PERFORM LIVE AT TERRACE ON THE 16TH! The categories of this draft include 3 different genres, 1 wildcard, and 1 “underrated” category. It's clear that all four women have different music tastes (though there is some overlap) so we'll be interested to see which dinner table y'all vote as the most interesting. This episode contains stories that allude to sexual violence against children. If you have children in the area or are strongly affected by this content you may want to listen to this episode when you are away from small children or not at all if it will affect you negatively. Trauma and childhood sexual abuse are an all-too-common occurrence for kids in foster care. This episode is no different. Janielle is a 14 year old girl with a story that she wanted to share. We were amazed at her willingness and ability to share such a personal story in the hope of helping others to find their strength to speak up. Her harrowing story and impressive resilience is a testament to the strength of the human soul.
Two solid weeks have passed so you know we have a lot to unpack! 2 week catch up (4:40). We share our thoughts on "Double Standards when it comes to men living at home " (26:30). Also.. we dive into the subtle art of "Ghosting" (52.20) and Janielle obviously shares a very intimate yet embarrassing story on why she ghosted a dude in her late 20's. Let's just say a forest and a tow truck was involved lol. Lastly in our pop culture segment, we're dry cleaning the stains out on the hit netflix show "Love Is Blind" and discuss when should someone disclose important information to their potential love interest (1:10:02). Should they just be tight lipped until they really get to know them? Sooo much tea to spill in this episode so press play and enjoy!

There comes a moment when you realize you’ll never be the same. How do we consider a character’s nuances, contradictions and dimensions? Janielle and Carson set out to reckon with her Dad/Rick Character, but a disorienting interruption changes everything. With help from her Mom, her Dad’s sailing friend Charley, and the box of things he left behind, Janielle begins to piece together a vision of the “Rick” as well as the “Dad” - and maybe even discover a little love for a complicated character. Follow along at @untitleddadproject! Tell us about your experience with Character Development at untitleddadproject@spokemedia.io! Untitled Dad Project is a Spoke Media original.
Another very special departure from the narrative Chapters! At some point, Carson and Janielle wanted to nail down the character archetype of an “Objectively Good Dad”. Luckily, Carson’s got one of those. Janielle came to Jeff McCain with questions about being a Good Dad, and instead of answers got a bunch of love and encouragement and support (apparently that’s kind of the gig when you’re loved by a Good Dad). If you’re also in need of some Good Dad energy - enjoy! Next week we’re back with a heap of empathy and nuance in CHAPTER 6: Character Development! Follow along at @untitleddadproject! Can you escape your own foreshadowing? Janielle confronts the theme that’s been chasing her from the beginning: “Daddy Issues”. With help from therapist Shea Theillman, father-loss expert Dr. Don Hebbard, and a slew of pop-culture references, Carson and Janielle figure out how to stop running and reckon with Oedipus (...not in the way that you think). EPI 52: ARE YOU GOOD? ft @janiellemckoy and @stacyannbuchanan ...the episode we have been wanting to do, we finally did and it is finally here! On this episode we talk to mental health advocate Stacy-Ann Buchanan and dyslexia advocate Janielle McKoy. Both are women that wear many hats but share the commonality of being advocates for things they have personally struggled with. Throughout the conversation, they share their personal stories and experiences. Specifically, we discuss exactly what dyslexia is (what we thought we knew it to be is not it), and what it isn’t. We also discuss mental illnesses and mental health and what exactly that can look like, as well as the difference between depression and feeling depressed. We are truly honoured to have both of these women on the pod. They give us insight on how to help people around us who may be struggling with a learning difference or a mental health issue. And we’re especially excited because both are of West Indian background so their stories are from people in our community, which is extremely important to us. In the West Indian or Black community, mental illnesses and learning differences can sometimes be viewed as stigmas and these two ladies have been working hard to change that. The more we talk about it, the less of a stigma it will become. We hope you gain some insight and feel just as inspired as we do. Press play, and we hope you enjoy! Fashion saved my life! It allowed me to express myself when I had trouble expressing myself verbally” Janielle Mckoy is an eclectic wardrobe stylist, visual display artist and now advocate for youth and adults living with Dyslexia. She is known for her effortless take on style and let’s her clothes tell a story. Having immersed herself in fashion styling for 15 years, Janielle is known as one of the most influential forces working in fashion today. Born of Jamaican descent in Toronto, Canada, Janielle was exposed at a very young age to the worlds of art and fashion. With her mother's influence and innovative style, she developed a very strong passion for vintage and all things eclectic. While attending George Brown College and studying Fashion Management, Janielle was diagnosed with Dyslexia at age 23. Once she received the tools to help her overcome her disability, Janielle completed the fashion management program and was nominated for valedictorian based on her hard work overcoming this learning obstacle and pursuing her career as a stylist while attending college. Janielle then moved to New York City to take on the fashion capital of the world. She started her New York experience by interning as a wardrobe stylist at BET Television Network, where she styled the hit countdown show 106 & Park. Seeking to diversify her experience, she began to work directly with pop stars and actresses to create their images on and off camera. Being a proud Toronto native, Janielle decided to undertake a new challenge and move back to her city and put her New York hustler mentality to use. Immediately, Janielle made a name for herself amongst artist and brands in Toronto, New York, and Atlanta by singlehandedly bringing her classy yet funky eclectic vintage style movement into fruition with her devotion to the style eras of the 1970’s and 1980’s. Her love and knowledge of fashion coupled with her desire to create the unexpected moments by adding prints, color and avant-garde trends made her the go-to stylist. Janielle got into the film and television industry in Toronto, where she was assigned working on movies such as Robo Cop and television shows like Suits and Defiance. Determined to brand herself on a more corporate level, Janielle decided to try something new and work as a visual display artist at Canada’s Top Menswear Company. While working here, Janielle was able to express her knowledge and love for menswear where it can be seen to the masses. She has received great reviews from top menswear brand representative from Giorgio Armani and Canali. In 2011, Janielle decided to launch a workshop titled “Selling You” which targets youth and adults teaching them how to dress for success, how to go for the position that they want and branding themselves for success. Also, she has a workshop geared to youth and adults who have learning disabilities and how to overcome this obstacle and make it in society. Janielle was able to make it in the fashion industry not based on what she knew, but based on her determination, her eagerness, and love for all things fashion. She made her clothes speak for her when she was scared to do so verbally. Through this journey, she has been recognized by George Brown College as a successful Alumni and has partnered with the Learning Disabilities Association and Youth Employment Services to spread the word on Living with LD. Janielle is far from the cookie cutter image. She is unique and believes her passion for fashion and advocacy for learning disabilities can mesh together. The goal is to empower youth and adults so they can pave their own path to accomplishment while overcoming obstacles. Janielle resides in Toronto. She has two parents from Jamaican descent, three sisters and a brother.
