Synopsis: This episode was inspired by a Rumi poem I've been thinking about lately. After reading and analyzing the poem, we compare and contrast it with two similar examples: a decision made by Claire Wineland, as a child, to decorate her hospital room, and a halachic institution which I won't spoil by naming it in the synopsis.Sources:- Epictetus, Enchiridion (The Handbook) Chapter 3- Rumi, A Given (translated by Coleman Barks)- Claire Wineland at Zappos All Hands Meeting- Sukkah 2:9----------The Torah content for the remainder of Adar II has been sponsored by David Campbell, and is dedicated "in honor of Rabbi Schneeweiss and all those who work to produce a grounded and thoughtful Judaism."----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! In this episode, we interview Claire Wineland. Claire has a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Claire shares her struggles and how she's overcoming those struggles. Claire is determined that she will not be defined by this illness.
Searching for something is different from finding it. This is true for logical problems, math problems, relationships, the search for happiness, or even the search for God.Here we talk about what may be tripping you up when you are looking for something, desiring something, but not getting it. This technique also works for interactions with others. In fact, we mention Chris Voss, a hostage negotiator, who teaches this technique to negotiators. And we see how it is also part of Marshall Rosenberg´s Non-violent Communication. We discuss how to use it on yourself and know if you are on the right path.We talk about one of the happiest persons sharing their insights into what made her enjoy every second of life, Claire Wineland. You can see a short and very inspirational documentary on Claire here:https://youtu.be/kD_Fr3VAsYMAnd we end by talking about the search for God and how it is different, and yet similar to other searches and how it, as if magically, brings solutions to many other problems. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions you can contact me on Instagram @BasiasThoughts. And, of course, if you would like to see more content from me do sponsor me on https://www.patreon.com/basia because that will allow me to focus more on content creation.
Claire Wineland became a popular YouTube influencer talking about the thing that ultimately killed her, cystic fibrosis. But she also became popular because she talked about so much more than just CF, living a remarkable life and teaching us repeatedly that we need to pursue something bigger than ourselves, no matter the challenges life dumps in our lap. I talked with Nicholas Reed about Claire Wineland and "Claire," the YouTube Original documentary he co-directed (You can read my Tubefilter column about "Claire" here, and watch the doc for free on YouTube here). "Claire" has already received nearly 1.4 million views since its Sept. 2 release, and it's worth the watch. In the meantime, Nick and I talk about the lessons we all need to learn from Claire's example. Give a listen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/support
More than 70,000 people worldwide are living with Cystic Fibrosis. Around three years ago I educated myself on what living with Cystic Fibrosis entails through the late Claire Wineland. Claire sadly passed away in 2018, since I have had the privilege of sitting down with the talented Grace Charles Cox to discuss her life with CF. Hopefully this educates you on the highs and lows of the disorder. Please share to bring some awareness! Eric is originally from Philadelphia, PA, and was born with cystic fibrosis. Diagnosed at the age of 1, his original life expectancy was between 10-14 years. As advances in medical treatment have moved forward, so has his life expectancy…so much so that Eric has now, at 41, surpassed his doctors’ hopes. He moved to Southern California as an adult to take advantage of the statewide Genetically Handicapped Persons Program, which enables him to get his treatments and medications fully covered by insurance. Rather appropriately, he has channeled his passion for environmentalism – and the idea of creating pathways to combat climate change – into a career as a solar engineer. You may hear him cough periodically in this interview, which is one of the symptoms of living with CF – as mucus builds up in the lungs, he has to cough it loose. In this episode, we dive into.... - what cystic fibrosis is and how it affects the body - that when Eric was born, the life expectancy for patients was 10-14 years; that advances in treatment have increased his life expectancy greatly – and he has now surpassed doctors’ expectations - how he was initially diagnosed at the age of 1 - that CF affects the exocrine glands, which can include the digestion – as well as the pancreas and lungs - that he takes 80+ pills a day to survive - the Genetically Handicapped Persons Program, and how he moved to CA to take part in this program and get his treatments and medications fully covered by insurance - that his parents were not only active fundraisers for CF awareness, research, and treatment; but that his mom ended up going to nursing school and becoming a CF clinic nurse - where we can find out more about CF: through the archived video blogs of the late Claire Wineland - that it takes him at least 2 hours/day to complete his treatments, and he has to adjust his lifestyle around it - that he has worked part-time for most of the last decade in order to effectively manage his health – to manage his stress - that there are varying levels of CF severity – some patients only have GI problems, and no lung issues; others aren’t diagnosed until they are in their 40s or 50s - that he had part of his lung removed at the age of 11 because it was a source of repeated infection; after this surgery, he went several years without being admitted to the hospital with an infection - that he developed a community during his hospital stays, and he looked forward to seeing his friends during his visits - “the world kind of absolves you of responsibility when you go to the hospital” - that to his knowledge, he is the only one of his peers from growing up who has survived CF - the emotional toll of losing friends so young - that he learned to be his own health advocate at an early age - that CF doesn’t define who he is – it’s an aspect of his lifestyle - that his work is a source of inspiration, and an area in which he’s willing to spend his limited time

One of the biggest questions we get in “how do I handle my relationships while living with a chronic illness or disability?” And there are all types of relationships—romantic, familial, parents, siblings, caregivers, friends, doctors—that we experience every day. There’s so many complexities in how our relationships can thrive, so throughout Season Two, our podcast will bring you guest experts that exemplify the best of these relationship…starting with the first relationship we experience: parental dynamic. We’ve enlisted a mother-daughter duo from Canada, and one of our Global Brand Leader-All Stars, 17-year-old Madi Vanstone and her mom Beth. Not only does Madi use her large social media platform as a teen with cystic fibrosis to empower others to live beautiful well-rounded lives, but her and Beth also fights to improve medical necessities for other CF fighters, like going to Canadian Parliament to gain expensive medications like Kalydeco to have government coverage. Now they are powerhouses in the CF activism realm, having raised funds for CF Canada and InvisiYouth, along with being featured activists in CF books and movie reviews like the recent FIVE FEET APART. In this episode, Dominique, Beth and Madi discuss the best ways parents and their young adult kin can interact both within the medical questions and in our non-medical lives, the top ways to talk to your parents when you’re feeling every sort of emotion about your health, give advice on how to boost your self-esteem in advocating with your doctors, family or public activism, tells us stories about why the entire Vanstone family has matching tattoos and their love of ice hockey, chats up pop culture headlines on our love fest for Justin Baldoni and his directorial debut of FIVE FEET APART and while chronic illness representation in cinema is not only vital to make our stories more visible, but they need to be told with as much passion as Baldoni brought to the film in tribute of the wonderful Claire Wineland’s legacy, talk about the ways we can grow from a shy activist to a public speaker like Madi as she’s grown up with CF, divulge the best tips when you and your parents may disagree, laugh endlessly on how being an advocate IS COOL even as a teen—especially when you’ve got your family supporting you, and the best advice on how to maintain the ‘normal non-medical’ side of your family dynamic like setting aside specific time to NOT talk about your chronic illness/disability journey. And...introduce a new segment about a teeniatrics® way of life! This is the first of many episodes reflecting on the relationships that take up our lives, and the dynamic duo of Beth and Madi showcase the full-range of how to thrive in a relationship with our parents in our full lives, both medically and personally. Take notes people, this episode is filled with lots of nuggets of knowledge! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The movie Five Feet Apart was inspired by Claire Wineland. The movie’s main character, Stella, showcases Claire’s charismatic and fighting personality. In this honest, raw, and often emotional conversation, Laura talks to her mom, Melissa Nordquist Yeager, about Claire, Five Feet Apart, and life without her daughter. Claire Wineland lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis in September of 2018, before the release of Five Feet Apart. It's a frank, touching and inspirational conversation. How does it feel to live with life-limiting illness from your first day? How does it influence the way you look at the world and what you believe. And what is the impact of living with an illness that so many people die of, to be close, from an early age, to people you outlive? Nineteen year old Claire Wineland has lived with Cystic Fibrosis since early in her childhood and it has led her to a life of service and connection. She has written a book, delivered a TED talk and started a foundation. And she has profound messages to share about what we all can do to face the fact of death and infuse our lives with purpose and meaning. We'll be talking about the amazing things she's learned, the amazing work she has already done, and the struggles it took for her and her family to find their way.

"One September 2nd 2018, the world experienced the great loss of one of its most brilliant, generous and loving voices, Cystic Fibrosis activist, YouTuber, motivational speaker and founder of Claire’s Place Foundation, Claire Wineland. Over the years I launched InvisiYouth Charity, Claire and I got to know one another and begin building a friendship while working together. Claire even became one of InvisiYouth’s first Global Brand Leaders! We talked so much about what our charities could do together, what we could forge together that would empower young adults with all chronic illnesses and, as Claire would say, “thrive in life.” One of our first plans we worked on was to have Claire be a special guest on the first season of InvisiYouth Chat Sessions. But we didn’t get that chance. Losing Claire brought so many emotions to those around the world that adored her on all scales. It was an absolute fact that all of InvisiYouth and myself especially wanted to still have Claire be part of our series. I made a promise to Claire earlier this year that no matter where life took us, our friendship would continue and we’d still work together. So this episode is how we get creative to keep working with Claire. We’re going to go through some of what Claire and I were planning to discuss, and some of the topics that Claire brought the most passion to in her mission. This is a showcase of Claire’s wondrous legacy. AND I have the blessing and fortune to interview a woman who’s not only one of the people closest to Claire, but also now forever part of the InvisiYouth family and my own, the Executive Director of Claire’s Place Foundation and her greatest role of being a mom of two, Claire’s mom, Melissa Yeager. I am forever changed by having Claire in my life these past three years, and while I will forever miss her laughter, humor, warmth and empowerment. Claire’s impact will remain for hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Thank you, Claire, for truly motivating a generation to live a life they’re proud, to thrive with chronic illness/disability, and to always lead a life of love, humor and giving. This is the first of many creative collaborations in our future, Claire, and this episode is for you." ~Dominique Viel, founder of InvisiYouth Charity See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Dave Aarons is the CEO of Unbundled Attorney, which uses a network of lawyers to provide legal services to families who otherwise would not be able to afford them. A veteran of the legal industry since 2004, Dave aims to establish the first donation-based unbundled legal clinic in the United States. Dave does not think that prohibitive costs should come between the average family and solid legal representation, and that unbundled legal services are beneficial to the legal industry even if they seem new and scary. In this episode, Dave discusses how his low-income upbringing fostered his self-reliant attitude, breaks down how unbundled legal services work, and asks you to reconsider how you engage with the social media you find comforting and secure. Show Notes: How did Dave’s formative years shape his beliefs toward money? Raised by single mother who had to rely on thrift and coupon shopping. Due to these circumstances he learned to appreciate everything he owned and every opportunity that came his way. Realized the need to be independent and self-reliant, especially after his bike was stolen and he had to earn the money to buy a new one. Did his circumstances lead him to become an entrepreneur? Not really, because entrepreneurship is not especially stable or secure. Became an entrepreneur more out of stubbornness and wanting to have job and personal freedom. Realized residual payment through entrepreneurship would allow him to finance his hobbies and side-ventures. What are unbundled legal services and why are they so important? Normally to retain legal services, you need to pay a high fee up front, which bars a lot of lower-income individuals from obtaining representation. Unbundled legal services allow you to retain an attorney for specific aspects of your case rather than for the entire case up front. Allows you to pay for the case each step at a time, accommodating for limited finances. Unbundled Attorney matches these clients to lawyers who provide these specific legal services. How have traditional law firms responded to this service? Old school law firms are generally resistant to change, but the marketplace is forced to adapt due to the very high percentage (70-80%) of people who can’t afford traditional legal fees. It’s a matter of finding of more open-minded attorneys. How was Unbundled Attorney born? Used to work for a provider that offered a variety of legal services under a single fee, but said fee was prohibitively high for the average family, even with discounts. Tried increasing discount percentages, but it was still too much for many people, so gradually started tailoring options service by service for flat fees. Who has been the most impactful person in Dave’s journey to do well and achieve financial success? His mentor, Steve Douglas Who has been the most impactful person in Dave’s drive to do good? His mother. When Dave is having a bad day, what does he do to get himself out of his funk? Plays golf, writes in his journal, What book does Dave recommend to those seeking a more successful path in life? http://slightedge.org/ (The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines Into Massive Success & Happiness by Jeff Olson) What is the best piece of advice related to success Dave has for our listeners? Take a good, hard look at what you actually get out of the casual media you consume and whether or not it’s worth the free time you have. Places to find Dave: https://www.unbundledattorney.com/ (Unbundled Attorney) Do Well & Do Good Challenge Nomination: “Claire’s Place Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization providing support to children and families affected by cystic fibrosis (CF). We all have scripts we have accepted for our lives, but often we are trying so hard to act out those scripts that we don't ever get around to living the life we are actually in. It is often hard to accept the life we are in and to realize that God is with us in it all. (Video link below) Claire Wineland video link

Jan 23, 2018 - Real talk about living and dying with Claire Wineland, activist and founder of Claire's Place Foundation, an organization that provides emotional and financial support to families living with cystic fibrosis.
Claire Wineland has defied the odds. At 20, she’s lived more than twice as long as doctors told her parents she would. Born with cystic fibrosis, Wineland has spent about a quarter of her life in hospitals, and her daily health regimen is a demanding routine of treatments, medications, and oxygen. Despite her health problems, though, she has learned to find purpose by helping others. At the age of 13 she founded Claire’s Place Foundation to provide support to CF patients and their families. She’s also touched many others with her YouTube videos and public talks where she speaks about her illness and dying, with charm, humor, and a life-affirming wisdom. We spoke to Wineland, a 2017 Global Genes’ Champion of Hope awardee, about her life with cystic fibrosis, what its taught her about living, and how finding a greater purpose than treating her own illness transformed her life.
Claire Wineland, 20 with cystic fibrosis from California, joins the podcast to talk about her life with CF, her charity, Claire's Place, and all over her advocacy work within the CF community. Most recently Claire has been a featured motivational speaker and tremendous role model for people with, or without, CF. She mentions that she started her charity when she was 13 after dealing with some significant health issues. Claire also touches on some of the things that motivate her as well as her decision not to go onto the Lung Transplant list. Ultimately Claire is your typical, extrodinary 20 year old - bubbly, fun and living life to the fullest!

Claire Wineland was born with cystic fibrosis or "CF", a genetic disease that causes excessive mucus secretions and collection, especially in the lungs. In her short life, Claire has undergone dozens of surgeries and has spent weeks at a time in the hospital. This is not, however, what characterizes her. Claire is a singer, an artist, a composer, and a natural-born comedian and speaker. She radiates with a warmth and wisdom beyond her years. She has been called a "little Buddha" a "bridge among people", and a "true old soul." She is precious to anyone who has met her, especially to her mother, Melissa, and her father, John. On April 13, 2010 after a relatively routine surgery, Claire became septic and within 24 hours, was in complete lung failure. Her parents were given the option of watching Claire die or putting her on a dangerous oscillator vent, which no child with CF has ever come off of. Her parents opted to put her on the high powered vent and into a drug induced coma so the doctors could try everything possible to reverse the damage to her lungs and her body. What followed was a remarkable two-week journey of prayer, love and healing. So many people were inspired by Claire's journey that a public Facebook page, "Claire Wineland Love, Songs and Updates", was created to disseminate the seemingly ever changing information. Within two weeks, the fans on the page grew to over 900. Out of this grew the desire and need for a foundation. Claire constantly strives to give back and make meaning of what she has had to go through; the message she shares is her way to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
