Sometimes you just gotta get away, and that's what Kris and Tara did during their unannounced break (sorry about that). But they're back now, and ready to report on where they've been, what they've done and, perhaps most importantly, what they recommend. Also, Tara cheats this week. Instead of one official recommendation (which is the entire point of this podcast) Tara comes back from vacation with two. Buckle up, folks. Chaos reigns! Official Recommendations From Kris: The Four Seasons (Netflix) Kris's official recommendation this week is the Netflix series The Four Seasons. The show revolves around three couples who vacation together four times a year (each season) and what happens when one of the couples breaks up. Kris says this has it all, the funny moments and the sad, and once she started, she couldn't put it down. From Tara: The Princess Match by Clare Lydon Tara's first recommendation this week is The Princess Match by Clare Lydon. It's a slow burn(ish), high romantic tension story between an out-and-proud athlete and an in-the-closet princess who wants to risk it all for her first chance at true happiness. Tara loved this so much she read it twice and she says it's her favourite of Lydon's books. From Tara: Discovering Nicola by Clare Ashton Tara's second recommendation this week is Discovering Nicola by Clare Ashton, an enemies-to-lovers, ice queen romance, with two women in their 50s embracing a same-sex relationship for the first time. Tara said the chemistry between the leads is incredible and this book ruined her in the best way. Go get it! Tara and Kris discuss the important matters of the moment: Christmas trees! Are you a white light or coloured light kind of house? Listen to find out Kris's stance and then stay to catch up on horrible HR managers, Orange Kitty and Black Kitty updates, as well as all the delicious food that Tara "bricked" herself with on a recent work trip to Toronto. And, as always, they have recommendations Official Recommendations From Kris: Bad Sisters (Apple TV+) This week, Kris recommends Bad Sisters, an Irish black comedy series. It revolves around a group of sisters and what happens when one sister's controlling husband suddenly dies, putting them at the center of a life insurance investigation. Kris loved everything about this series, and if that's not enough for you, it has Fiona Shaw. What more can you ask for? From Tara: Don't Marry Me at Christmas by Clare Lydon This week's recommendation is the latest Christmas romance from British romcom queen, Clare Lydon. Tara was a little sad not to see a Lydon Christmas romance last year, but the wait was worth it. Don't Marry Me at Christmas is a frenemies-to-lovers (we love this description) situation that will give you all the good feelings and leave you hungry for cupcakes. Dig in! Starring Jodie Foster and Annette Benning, Nyad follows Diana Nyad's multiple attempts to swim the straits of Florida in the 2010s. Sports movies get us where we live and when they have excellent performances? They get recommended. In this last episode of the year (also the 50th regular episode — can you even?), Tara and Kris deep dive into the importance of We're Here (HBO Max), the different ways gingerbread houses can work into a romance, and their recent awesome bonus pod with chefs Catie Randazzo and J Chong from The Big Brunch. Happy Holidays, y'all! Official Recommendations From Kris: Under the Christmas Tree (2021) This week, Kris checks out Under the Christmas Tree,  Lifetime's first movie centering a lesbian couple. It's sweet. It's gentle. It's the story of one woman looking for a tree for her boss and finding it in another woman's yard. Of course, that's not all she finds. It's love. They find love in the yard. Both of them. The tree was a distraction. From Tara: The Christmas Catch by Clare Lydon Tara describes this book as Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets two lesbians who grew up around each other, one of whom had a massive childhood crush on the other. TB and Miranda are working on Devil's Advocate, their next cowrite, but the heat and humidity are killing TB, making her sluggish and cranky. TB survived the IHS Christmas in July sale, which was the best yet. Sadly, Amazon is struggling with rankings yet again, so it was hard to tell by the charts. TB is currently in Maine on a writing retreat. Go TB, go! Clare got the Christmas book from the editor in 5 days! Word is, it's the funniest Clare Lydon book yet. The Brazilian translation of You're My Kind has been released. Unfortunately, it too is getting snagged in the Amazon ranking debacle. Clare went on a rant on Twitter about book returns and many authors cheered her on. Book pirates suck! They move on to the topic: conferences. Clare and TB have both been to conferences recently, so this chat is timely. One of the most popular questions the duo receives is whether conferences are worth the investment (travel, accommodations). It's a difficult question to answer since it's hard to see the return on the investment, but both Clare and TB believe the networking with other authors in real life cements deeper connections. Also, you learn loads of things. Have a listen and find out how they get distracted by a trash truck. Exciting times! What do you think of conferences? Love them? Hate them? Do you go? Head over to lesbianswhowrite.com, and leave a comment on the episode. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. Happy listening! Show notes episode 3 – Common fears and frustrations In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—discuss some of the fears and frustrations that might come up when writing diverse characters. More specifically, we talk about the following fears:  Representing someone in the wrong way… …and why that shouldn't keep us from trying Taking someone else's voice away by trying to speak for them… …and where we stand in the Own Voices vs. Allies debate Misrepresenting your own community… and why this calls for a multiplicity of voices from each and every community Some quotes from this week's episode: “Not all differences are considered equal. Depending on where we are as a society, and which society you're writing about, some identity markers might carry more charge than others. Which is why some misrepresentations cause more outrage than others, and why we might be more scared of representing this character the wrong way than that character.”   “What we would love to see happen all around us is that people, instead of stepping away from the challenge because something is at stake, lean into the challenge and start taking those steps.”   “There are loads of things that are hard to get right as an author. The feel of a place, of an era, dialogue, how characters interact, character and story arcs that come full circle. Writing diverse characters is just one of those aspects. You don't stop describing a place or cut out all your dialogue because it's hard getting it right or needs more research.”   “Why put all of that labour on those diverse authors when we can actively contribute to creating a more diverse reading experience? Why can we not both create space for diverse authors and their voices WHILE we ourselves are working as hard to turn this world into a better place?”   And here are the (re)sources we mentioned on the show: Nicola Upson's The Death of Lucy Kyte: https://www.faber.co.uk/9780571366415-the-death-of-lucy-kyte.html  Sally Andrew's Recipes for Love and Murder: https://www.sallyandrew.com/recipes-for-love-and-murder  You can find the “Yes, you should be afraid to write ‘diverse' characters” article by Mo Black here:  https://curiosityneverkilledthewriter.com/yes-you-should-be-afraid-to-write-diverse-characters-4a6c482a7379  Joanna Penn's interview with Clare Lydon can be found here: https://www.thecreativepenn.com/2016/06/13/writing-lesbian-fiction The “Writing fictional characters who aren't like you” article by Randy Ingerman can be found here: https://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/blog/2010/10/11/writing-fictional-characters-who-arent-like-you  Mariëlle's My Voice, My Story anthologies: https://mswordsmith.nl/anthologies Claribel A. We also enjoyed the second season of Craith, which has an unusual villain.   Harper is one of the lesfic authors featured in Clare Lydon’s Lesbian Book Club Festive Special.    Tune in again next week for a new episode of Harper Bliss & Her Mrs.  Get in touch with us with your questions, comments, or suggested topics at harperblissandhermrs@gmail.com.  Get some free books by subscribing to the Harper Bliss mailing list. Haley’s debut novel “Those Who Wait” took the lesfic world by storm this year, along with its follow-up “Forever And A Day.” Her new book, “When You Least Expect It” is currently thrilling readers around the world, too. Is it possible the duo are becoming morning peeps? TB announces some changes to I Heart Lesfic to help lighten her workload. She’s on the second draft of her London novella, and she’s also making progress on season three of Girl Love Happens. TB makes an ice cream announcement that may result with a lot of hate mail. Clare had peeps over for a BBQ. TB didn’t know they (BBQs and people) still existed. In big news, Clare’s lockdown novella is with the editor and will be released in mid-July. She’s giving it away free to her newsletter subscribers, so sign up, folks! In even bigger news, Clare has made great progress on her London 7 romance and has figured out story aspects of London 8 and 9. Wowzers! They move on to pen name chat, and TB starts off by saying “what does TB stand for?” is one of the most popular questions she gets. So, why did TB pick TB? She’s insanely private and about one step away from being a recluse. Clare Lydon is Clare’s actual name! She always wanted to see her name on a book cover, but if she could go back in time, she’d probably go the pen name route. They list reasons to choose a pen name and what you should consider when making your selection. Clare cautions authors to put a lot of thought into their pen name (don’t be a TB), since it’ll be part of your author brand. Do you have a pen name? Why or why not? Head over to www.lesbianswhowrite.com, and leave a comment on the episode. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. I don’t write sanitized fiction. If you want books that are light, cute and nobody swears, that’s great. But I’m not that writer.” Clare also does a run-down of the Amazon Lesbian Fiction charts in the US & UK. Her new book, One Golden Summer, a co-write with TB Markinson, is out now! TB messes up numbers. Again. TB is scrambling to get caught up with work before her trip to London to visit the one and only Clare Lydon. TB had two triumphs this week, including sending two episodes of Girl Love Happens to the editor and cranking through the first draft of the cowrite with Miranda MacLeod. The fear of a deadline is urging TB on. Clare is back from her holiday, feeling refresh. A good thing, because she’s prepping Before You Say I Do for a March 10th release. The first ARC members have given the book an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Clare is being very calm about the launch and keeps saying, “What will be will be.” TB should learn from this. Clare has also made progress on her Christmas romance, and her editing deadline isn’t until October. She’s totally got this one. The duo moves on to the topic: can you make a full-time living from writing lesbian fiction? They break down the stages of their careers, and surprisingly, almost the same amount of time elapsed from the start to when they realized they could support themselves by writing full-time. Both of them have had ups and downs, and neither started out of the gate knowing everything, which is nearly impossible when founding a new business. Over the years they’ve been in the lesbian fiction business, they’ve learned what it takes to make a living, which includes being consistent, adding to your backlist, locating different income funnels (audiobooks, paperbacks, ebooks, translations, merchandize, Patreon, etc.) learning advertising, connecting with readers, and being nice just to name some of the keys to success. Also, it’s important to keep learning, and when you hit a rough patch, just keep going. TB prepared for the festive chat by rocking her Grumpy Cat T-shirt, staying true to her grinchyness. In shocking news, she’s not freaking out about Lizzie at the moment because she took Clare’s advice to pull back and not rush to the finish line. Once again, Clare has TB’s back. Also, the IHL mega sale page is almost ready for the December 26th start date. Across the pond, Clare finished the first draft of her new novel. Woo-hoo! She discovered she’d written 1K of an epilogue but has no memory of doing so. To celebrate completing the first draft, Clare gave herself an afternoon off to do her taxes, and TB questions Clare’s idea of fun. However, Clare and the wife are spending a Christmassy day together, including going to a gingerbread architectural exhibit. The duo moves on to their favorite festive books and films. TB, who writes more angsty books, prefers reading holiday rom-coms, two of her favorites being one by some chick named Clare Lydon, the other by Miranda MacLeod. TB realizes her friendship with Clare started after reading Clare’s All I Want for Christmas. If TB hadn’t read it, would this podcast even exist? Also, TB just released a holiday cowrite with Miranda. It seems Christmas stories have greatly impacted TB’s life, and her grinchy mind is blown. In a surprising turn, Clare, the rom-com writer, favors angst-filled holiday stories. Is this the only example of Clare being the darkness and TB being the light? Stay tuned! Clare also takes a moment to dive into the recent Hallmark Channel controversy, where she quickly goes back to being the more hopeful of the two, wishing the company would become more inclusive after their social media dustup. Both of them agree Elf is one of, if not the best, Christmas films, but they can’t agree on the finest A Christmas Carol adaptation. It would be surreal if they agreed on too much even while recording a festive episode. They’d love to hear about your favorite festive books and films. This week’s question is somewhat sidetracked when the duo talks about Christmas books they’ve written. TB has only started writing them in the past two years. Clare hasn’t written one since her successful 2015 novel, All I Want For Christmas and has no idea why that’s the case. She loves Christmas. Readers love her festive books. Clare Lydon's finest hour It's July, it's hot, it's humid, it's another episode of Lesbians Who Write! This week, TB is relieved she's not an elephant but disappointed by BookBub's lesfic representation during Pride month. Meanwhile, Clare has been bra shopping and reveals that she's been putting her bra on incorrectly her whole life. It's all about centering your nipple, so say the fitting professionals. Clare and TB always said this podcast would be educational. You're welcome. In other news, Clare reveals another ice cream flavor from her new book. TB in nonplussed. These two should never go for ice cream together. Onto the main topic, and both Clare and TB reveal how they work with designers and also that they've worked with a variety during their careers. The key is to be clear about your brand, what your cover needs to say, and also to make sure your cover is reflective of the lesbian fiction genre you're in. They discuss the state of lesbian book covers as a whole (not brill) and hope to persuade more people to invest in their product by giving it a pretty jacket. Because readers really do judge a book by its cover. Stop back next week for another lively conversation about choosing an editor. Probably with less nipple chat, alas. If you’d like to leave a comment on the episode, head over to www.lesbianswhowrite.com. They’d love to hear from you. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. Happy listening! In this sixth episode of Harper Bliss & Her Mrs, Harper discusses the benefits of keeping a personal diary. It was, again, an exciting week for both of us. Harper was nominated for a Goldie, Caroline won her golf match on Saturday and her team went on to become the second best team in Belgium, we were interviewed for another podcast and the cover for the upcoming co-written book with Clare Lydon was finalised. We didn't watch that much television this week, but we have a new favourite podcast: Where Should We Begin with Esther Perel. And it's not just because she's Belgian like us. For our topic of the week Harper talks about the habit she created of keeping a personal diary. It was inspired by an episode of The Creative Penn which featured Orna Ross of the Alliance of Independent Authors. Harper worked on the second draft of the book she's co-writing with Clare Lydon and accidentally reveals too much about it, which had to be beeped out.  We watched a lot of television last week, starting with the whole fourth season of Bosch. We also watched the first two episodes of Killing Eve, with a fabulous Sandra Oh, and we started on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which we predict we'll finish by the end of the week.   For our topic of the week Harper talks about her decision to be off social media for the past week, and how it gave her so much time to do other things. Next we discuss the second part of Money Heist, which was as great as the first part and which we can't recommend enough. Finally, the London Book Fair. Or maybe it should be called the London Beer Fair. We hung out and had loads of fun with fellow lesfic authors Clare Lydon and T.B. Markinson. We had too much to drink at the Self Publishing Formula meet-up, but had a great chat with Mark Dawson and James Blatch (listen to their great podcast!)  We also had too much to drink at the Alliance of Independent Authors reception (it was sponsored by Amazon, so why not?)   Tune in again next week for a new episode of Harper Bliss & Her Mrs.   Get in touch with us with your questions, comments or suggested topics at harperblissandhermrs@gmail.com  For more on Harper Bliss visit www.harperbliss.com To get a weekly newsletter with discounted lesbian books sign up HERE.

No television topic this week, but rather a lesbian movie: Below Her Mouth. Harper has a lot (A LOT) to say about the movie and its abundance of scissoring scenes. In the weekly topic part of the episode we talk about the fact that we have been doing this writing and publishing thing for more than six years now, growing it from a hobby to a business that sustains both of us. When the two are forced to work side-by-side, sparks begin to fly onstage and off.  Why it made this list  It is a charming story of two women who are really different and yet they are drawn to one another with a power that can’t be denied even when tragedy occurs.  Plus they live literally across the hall from one another.    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca      Check out Tara’s full review here    2 Hidden Truths by Jae  Published by Ylva Publishing  This book is a: story about coming to terms with who you are because the girl who moved in next door is irresistible.  What it’s about  Hendrika has nothing left after her best friend Johanna dies, she loses her job, and is kicked out of the boarding house she’s been living in. Nothing left, that is, but the ticket from Boston to Oregon that Jo was sent by a man expecting his mail-order bride. With nothing but her meager belongings in a carpet bag and trepidation for taking a dead woman’s place at a stranger’s side, she hops on the train to begin her journey.  When she arrives at the ranch she discovers that her husband to be has left the ranch for a journey to deliver some horses. But she is welcomed in by the resident ranch owners, the Hamiltons and she meets Amy, their oldest daughter and a force of nature in her own right. Amy is hiding the fact that she is drawn to women in a way that she thinks in unnatural and when Hendrika arrives on the scene she is left reeling.   The more time these Hendrika and Amy spend together the stronger their attraction becomes.  Why it made this list  Hendrika and Amy essentially live next door to each other.     Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca      Check out Tara’s review here    3 The Roundabout by Gerri Hill  Published by Bella Books  This book is a: sweet enemies to lovers romance.  What it’s about  Megan Phenix - bar and grill owner in gay-friendly Eureka Springs - is labeled as "playing hard to get" and finds herself the object of much unwanted attention. When Leah catches the attention of the multitude of single lesbians in town, she searches for a way out. Could the grumpy grill owner next door be the answer to her problems?  Megan and Leah strike an unlikely alliance and conspire to rid themselves of the unwanted attention by fake dating. She’s the heart of Wells, a beautiful village in mid-Wales, leaving light and laughter in her wake. She has a doting family, an errant dog and a little sister with a nose for mischief. But she’s the only gay in the village and it’s a long time since she kissed a girl: the chance of romance in sleepy Wells is rarer than a barking sheep.  If she doesn’t think too hard, life is cosy, until a smart sports car barrels into town with the last woman Poppy wants to see behind the wheel. Beautiful Rosalyn Thorn was once Poppy’s high school BFF even though she was trouble. Then one day she abandoned Wells and Poppy without explanation. Now the highflier is back and bound to cause fresh havoc in the village and with Poppy’s heart; folk are not happy.  Wells needs to wake up to the 21st century and Rosalyn can help, but old prejudices die hard. If they can be friends it could be the chance to make everyone’s happy ever after. Couldn’t it?  Why I love it  It is brilliant.  Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca      Check out my full review here   Melissa Brayden’s Top picks  6 Without Warning KG MacGregor  Published by Bella Books  What it’s about  On a day that begins like any other, a violent earthquake strikes Los Angeles, plunging the region into chaos. Two strangers, trapped in a collapsed shopping mall, find each other amid the rubble and join forces to escape. Hampered by injury and darkness, they dig and claw their way through one crumbled store after another, emerging long after most have given up hope for survivors.  The ordeal leaves both women shaken, but their shared triumph sets them on a life-changing course together, igniting a connection like neither has ever known.  Anna Kaklis--whose perfectly planned life never included falling in love with another woman--is thrown for a loop, but she doesn't doubt her heart.  Lily Stewart--abandoned too many times by people she trusted--won't let herself believe that Anna's love will endure.   Without Warning is the story of their courageous journey through adversity, and their promise of steadfast love.   Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca    7 All That Matters by Susan X Meagher  Published by Brisk Press  What it’s about  Life is going damned well for Blair Spencer. She’s a very successful real estate agent, happily married to a man who encourages her to live the independent life she loves—and they’re actively working to have a baby.  The wrench in the works is that Blair favors adoption, while her husband David desperately wants to have a biological child. The fates are against them, and they finally seek the help of a group of reproductive specialists. One of the doctors, a surgeon named Kylie Mackenzie, eventually becomes a good friend to Blair. And she needs all of the friends she can get when things start to go horribly wrong at home. As her marriage teeters on the brink of collapse, she relies more and more on Kylie’s friendship.  Kylie’s happily gay; Blair’s happily straight. But the way they structure their relationship leads friends and family to privately question whether the pair is setting themselves up for heartache. They eventually come to a crossroads, which could either destroy their friendship or turn it into what each of them has been seeking. The question is whether each woman can change her view of herself and her needs. The answer is all that matters.    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca      Read Our Review Here   8 Too Close To Touch by Georgia Beers  Published by Bold Strokes Books  What it’s about  Life gets complicated when love turns out to be nothing like you expected - and the woman you want is too close to touch. Gretchen Kaiser is a workaholic corporate honcho with issues – she’s got daddy issues, she’s got female-executive-in-a-man’s-world issues, and she’s got one night stand issues. What she doesn’t have are love issues. She isn’t looking for it, she doesn’t feel she needs it, and she doesn’t expect to find it…certainly not right under her nose. Kylie O’Brien is the kind of girl who believes in true love and is willing to wait until it shows up at her door. Her best friend Mick would sweep her off her feet given the chance, but Mick doesn’t make Kylie feel the way true love should. And now Kylie has to worry about her new boss – Gretchen Kaiser’s icy reserve makes life as her administrative assistant a challenge. It doesn’t matter one damn bit that Gretchen is extremely attractive with a voice as rich and smooth as melted chocolate. It absolutely doesn’t…    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca      9 Wasted Heart Lynn Galli  Published by Penikila Press  What it’s about Austy Nunziata has spent two years pining for her married best friend and about the same amount of time berating herself for it. In fact, she’s so adept at trying to stamp out her feelings that she could probably write a How-To guide on the subject. One, move 3,000 miles away from your best friend. Two, get a time-consuming job so you don’t have time to think about your best friend. Three, hang out with new friends who aren’t anywhere as enchanting as your best friend. Four, get involved with a striking woman who is smart, sexy, caring and, most importantly, available, unlike your best friend. Five, hope the new love interest doesn’t find out about your pathetic best friend obsession before you have time to replace it with actual life-altering love.  Even following her own step-by-step process, Austy may not be able to redirect all of her misguided feelings. Becoming involved with Elise Bridie helps her realize how pointless her pining has been. But when Elise suspects that she harbors feelings for someone else, will their new found love survive the unrequited infatuation of Austy’s fantasies?    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca    10 Just Jorie by Robin Alexander  Published by Intaglio Publications  What it’s about  Some believe that special someone is out there just waiting to be found. Jorie Andolini is one of those people and has spent a lot of time envisioning that moment. She bumps into a woman at a grocery store, the woman drops a can of peas, Jorie picks it up, their eyes meet, and two souls connect. But it’s actually a wasted trip to New York, a snowstorm, and a canceled flight home that puts her in the path of Lena Vaughn.  Lena has found fault in every man she’s ever dated. Her dream of finding a husband is dwindling with every year that passes. Despite what her friends say, Lena doesn’t believe she has a fear of commitment, she simply hasn’t found a man she wanted to commit to. It comes as a surprise that in fact it is a woman who stirs those desires. For Lena, it’s not really a matter of sexuality, it’s just Jorie.  Travel the road to happiness with Jorie and Lena. Two crazy old women, meddling friends, and cattitude are just some sights you’ll see along the way.    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca   Check out my full review here    Amy's Bonus Book Totally Worth it by Maggie Cummings  Published by Bold Strokes Books  This book is a: girl next door, age gap melting the ice queen  What it’s about  Welcome to the world of Bay West Social.  Twenty-something Meg is all about her career when her house hunt unexpectedly lands her at Bay West—a lesbian mecca tucked away in the suburbs of NYC—and her social life is given a turbo boost. Years later, she is forced to return home with at least one granted wish—her daughter, Sydney.  Alex Soileau stood at Dana’s side for years tossing her coins into the well, making the same wish each time, a secret plea that she refused to reveal even to her best friend. Time and maturity insisted that she give up on her one fervent desire, but her heart never would.  Reunited as adults, both women realize that maybe there was magic in the well after all.    Get it on Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca   Melissa Brayden’s Bonus Books    Safe Harbor by Radclyffe  Published by Bold Strokes Books   What it’s about  A mysterious newcomer, a reclusive doctor, and a troubled gay teenager learn about love, friendship, and trust during one tumultuous summer in Provincetown.
