Today is a day to honor the incredible women in our lives, especially our mothers, who have not only given us physical life but have also often been the ones to share the life-changing truth of a relationship with Jesus. Their faithfulness and resilience have left a legacy that continues to shape us and our church. As we celebrate them, we also reflect on what it means to be resilient people—those who, when knocked down by life, don't stay down but bounce back, not in our own strength, but because of the treasure God has placed within us.Resilience is not just about enduring hardship; it's about the art of bouncing back. Using the imagery of a tennis ball and an egg, we see that while everyone gets knocked down, not everyone gets back up. The difference is not in the strength of the container, but in the value and power of what's inside. Paul, writing to the Corinthians, reminds us that we are like fragile clay jars, but within us is the greatest treasure—the gospel, the very presence of Jesus Christ. This treasure gives us forgiveness for our past, security for our future, and power for today.Paul's life was a testimony to resilience. He endured beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, and emotional burdens, yet he never gave up. Why? Because he understood the value of the treasure within him and the ripple effect his faithfulness would have on others. Ministry is not just for pastors or missionaries; every believer is called to pour into others—at home, at work, and in every sphere of life. The pain and setbacks we experience are not pointless; when surrendered to Christ, they become platforms for His glory and opportunities for others to see what true faithfulness looks like. The key to resilience is not focusing on our own fragility, but on the surpassing power of God at work in us. Our present troubles, though real and painful, are small compared to the eternal glory that awaits. We are called to fix our eyes not on what is seen and temporary, but on what is unseen and eternal. In our weakness, God's strength is made perfect, and our faithfulness leaves a legacy that outlasts our lives.[00:00] - Welcome[01:00] - Honoring Mothers and Their Spiritual Legacy[03:19] - The Art of Bouncing Back: Tennis Ball vs. Egg[06:30] - Paul and the Church at Corinth: Context and Struggles[08:53] - Hard Conversations and the Risk of Truth[10:32] - Religion vs. Relationship with Jesus[12:27] - God's Mercy and the Call to Never Give Up[14:48] - Pressed but Not Crushed: Paul's Couplets[17:19] - Ministry as Every Believer's Calling[19:37] - Disappointments and Setbacks in Ministry[22:35] - Paul's Resume of Resilience[28:26] - The Treasure in Fragile Clay Jars[32:36] - The Gospel: Forgiveness, Security, and Power[38:48] - Athletic Imagery: Wrestling and Boxing in Faith[40:22] - Nikki's Story: Real-Life Resilience[50:30] - The Ripple Effect of Faithfulness[52:29] - Shifting Perspective to the Eternal[54:00] - Invitation to Receive the Treasure and Prayer
Vergessen Sie das, was draußen passiert! Plor, du hast die Show gerade erst gesehen, was hat dich denn besonders überzeugt?

A poem in Old English that is wildly ambivalent but brutally clever coupled with a vegetation-rich perversion of an English classic.

On the web you'll find a lot of talk about spirituality, yet so few rise above body-consciousness and get to experience that Sacred Inner Space for themselves. Reliable information is quite rare. There's so much discussion about "gnostics", "mystics", "sages of philosophy", "masters of the east", or "ancient scriptures" but almost nothing is ever said about the spiritual practices of these gnostics and mystics of the ages. Only with a Living Mystic Path, a Living School of Spirituality is one close to the Inner Circle of Masters and Students where this sort of Divine Path can be made knowable to the genuine spiritual seeker by way of Initiation into the Mysteries. Today, an introduction to meditation for beginners that also provides a glimpse into the world of advanced practice, inner Light and Sound, the path of the masters, East and West, in the various schools of spirituality. "Darkness is no longer dark to me." "There is a Sound emanating from beyond the silence." (Spiritual masters allude to transcendental heavenly senses, eyes and ears of the soul able to see and hear spiritually.) "Light is always within us. When the mind is settled, we see that Light." (Sant Kirpal Singh, unpublished book on Sant Mat meditation) “It is impossible to confine love to the temporal and transient levels of life, and it is impossible to confine the grandeur and majesty of God to the dimensions of the mind... I had no fixed starting place in time and space, for I dwelt in a multi-verse that was co-extensive with all the ages. But my inner world was still limited by the boundaries of creation; I needed the guidance of a spiritual adept, within the physical world itself, to give me new birth into the freedom of eternity.” (George Arnsby Jones, disciple of Master Kirpal, author of, An Odyssey of Inner Space) References, Subjects, and Sources Include: passages about solitude, silence, and meditation from: 1) Thomas Merton, 2) Caroline Stephen, The Lord of Silence (a Quaker publication), 3) Thomas Kelly; 4) Saint Thomas - the Apostle to India; 5) The Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library: Apocryphon of John, Book of Allogenes, Trimorphic Protennoia, and Thunder: Perfect Mind; 6) The Book of Enoch, 7) Hebrew Bible: Psalm 46: 10 ("Be still and know that I Am God."); 8) The Acts of Peter; 9) The Jesus Sutras of China; 10) The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu; 11) Swamiji Maharaj from the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry - also shared here: "Meditate: Sit still and you will reach your destination. Four Faber poets will join us to read from their recent collections.Describing Declan Ryan's long-awaited debut, Crisis Actor, Liz Berry called it ‘elegant and heartaching'. Maggie Millner‘s Couplets, also a debut, is a novel in verse, a unique repurposing of the 18th century rhyming couplet into a thrilling story of queer desire. Hannah Sullivan's follow-up to her T.S. Eliot Prize-winning Three Poems, Was it For This, also consists of three long poems, on subjects ranging from London and the Grenfell fire to new motherhood. The title poem of Nick Laird's new collection, Up Late, won the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. Terrance Hayes has characterised his work as containing 'a truth-telling that's political, existential, and above all, emotional'.Find more events at the Bookshop: lrb.me/eventspod Hosted on Acast. Newfoundland has vanished, Tokyo is the new Venice and people are living in hive-like housing due to rising tides. Jason joins guest host Talia Schlanger to discuss the book's central themes and why he decided to write it in rhyming couplets.

Medaya Ocher and Kate Wolf speak with the celebrated translator Ann Goldstein, whose most recent translated work is a novel called Forbidden Notebook by Alba de Céspedes. Ann Goldstein is a former editor at the New Yorker, where she worked from 1974 to 2017. She began translating Italian literature in the '90s and in 2005 she translated Elena Ferrante's Days of Abandonment. She went on to translate Ferrante's entire Neapolitan trilogy, starting with My Brilliant Friend. Goldstein's latest translation, Forbidden Notebook, is a novel written by the Cuban-Italian writer Alba de Céspedes. First published in Italy in the 1950s, the novel centers around a woman who buys a notebook on a whim, and begins to furtively write in it, hiding it and herself from her husband and her children. Through the notebook, she begins to learn more about her desire, her guilt, and the sacrifices she has made for her family, her past, and her future. Also, Maggie Millner, author of Couplets, returns to recommend The Call-Out: A Novel in Rhyme by Cat Fitzpatrick.

Cadenas musculares: Si quieres trabajar piernas o brazos o core, etc.
Maggie Millner joins Medaya Ocher and Kate Wolf to discuss her debut book, Couplets, a love story in verse, written in alternating chapters of couplets and prose poems. It's about a woman whose life is good: she has a loving partner, caring friends, organic vegetables, plenty of tote bags. Everything changes when she meets a woman at a bar and falls deeply in love, beginning an intense, consuming affair. What follows is an exploration of selfhood — a body and heart turned inside out. Millner writes about the ways in which we discover ourselves, the power other people have over us, about being both subject and object. Couplets is about relationships, queerness, sex and desire, as well as the very act of writing all of that down and turning it into poetry. Also, De'Shawn Charles Winslow, author of Decent People, returns to recommend What Napolean Could Not Do by DK Nnuro.

Oh so wütend. In this episode, our guest Laura Van Prooyen reads "Elegy for My Mother's Mind," a poem that navigates the complexities of memory, loss, and familial relationships. Laura's poem gives us an opportunity to think about the deep sources of poetic inspiration, the revision process, and the power of metaphor. To learn more about Laura's work, check her website (https://lauravanprooyen.com/). I'm having a few weeks off to re-boot before a very busy 2022. Amy Horton is one of the co-ordinators of the St Louis chapter of the American Pilgrims on the Camino - we met in Nevada in March 2020 - days before Covid hit. Amy and her husband Ben are the quintessential thinkers. They felt the lure of the Camino and it now plays a big part in their lives....and the lives of their chickens.
In this episode, Kenyatta Rogers discusses the puzzle of poetry, doing the work, finding inspiration, seeking out places to send work, the difference between poetry and narrative, playing with constraints, reading work out loud, patience, starting with couplets, and writing at the supermarket. This is it, Couplets. The final episode of I Swear We're Not A Couple. This is a bittersweet episode where The Couple recap people's reactions to finding out that this is the end. Also, Rogelio and Adam recap their London trip. The episode (series) concludes with a playlist of good-bye songs, listening to every sound bite from the show, and The Couple talking about what they'll miss most. Thank you to everyone who listened and help make this show what it was. Did you miss them? After a hiatus, Eric and Zeff are back with a show where all the stories are in couplets including a fishmonger civil war in South London. In sport, Ryan Reynold and Rob McElhenney visit Wrexham, and there's a study of bias in performance analysis. In travel news, a plane drops its load, literally, and does insurance cover your activities while inside a car, ahem. Finally, actor Dean Stockwell passes, and there's more to the obituary business than you think.

With all the new homes under construction in my development, it's hard not to look back through my poetry books and pluck out this little gem to share with you all this week. It's a silly little ode written when I moved into a house I'd bought many years ago, full of optimism as a homeowner after years of renting a place. Hey everyone, this is where I remind you that this podcast can't continue forever without your support! Pick up one of my poetry books, tell a friend about the podcast, the usual rate and review stuff. Links to purchase all my books (poetry and otherwise, if you're so inclined) can be found at my site: https://LefthandRob.net There's also a link there to some Social Justice causes that could use your money to keep doing their good work. To my long-time listeners, thanks for sticking around! For all the new folks, welcome!

Mirza Ghalib’s original Takhallus (pen-name) was Asad, taken from his given name, Asadullah Khan. At some point early in his poetic career he decided to adopt the pen-name of Ghalib (meaning all conquering, superior, most excellent). Ghalib wrote on Love, Philosophy and God. His work is profound. In this episode I have narrated the best couplets of Ghalib on various topics like, “Who is Ghalib”, “Ghalib on Philosophy & Religion”, “Ghalib on Love, Longing and Heartbreak”If you like our podcast please share it with your friends. Donald Macleod on Jacques Offenbach - maestro of the Cancan and much more besides. Today’s episode we meet Offenbach on the brink of defeat – when he decides to launch his own theatre company, ‘Les Bouffes-Parisiens’ in a tiny wooden shack on the Champs-Elysées. It was an instant and enduring success; over the next quarter-century, more than 50 of Offenbach’s musical comedies were to début there. We get an insight into the character of this driven creative artist – the man who “cannot stop working”. He even had his carriage kitted out with a writing desk, so that he could continue composing, scoring or revising as he travelled between venues. Next, we hear about his A-team librettists, Meilhac and Halévy, and a mysterious stranger makes him an offer he can’t refuse. Offenbach is whisked to the United States on a concert tour, where he is particularly fascinated by the women. Finally, Donald looks at Offenbach’s gout-ridden final years, and the opera he left unfinished on his death (The Tales of Hoffmann). Part memoir, part history, part investigation, in Chinese Couplets, filmmaker Felicia Lowe searches for answers about her mothers emigration to America during the Chinese Exclusion era. Lowes documentary reveals the often painful price paid by immigrants who abandoned their personal identity, the burden of silence they passed on to their offspring, and the intergenerational strife between immigrants and their American born children.
Good to see you hear us again, boo. This week we quibble about cover letters and interview the wise and generous Nabila Lovelace as we sip on Cold Clove Couplets. NABILA LOVELACE is a born and raised Queens native, as well as a first generation American. In her debut collection, Sons of Achilles, Nabila attempts to examine the liminal space between violence and intimacy. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Narrative Northeast, Washington Square Review, Day One, ESPNW, & Vinyl. She is co-founder of The Conversation Literary Festival. COLD CLOVE COUPLET is a cold take on a hot toddy. Like a heroic couplet, this cocktail marches on sure feet, giving the bite of ginger, the brightness of bubbles, and the warmth of bourbon and spice. Think Moscow Mule meets the Deep South over the holidays. Perfect for when you feel the sniffles coming on, but you still want to have a cute boozy brunch with your people. Pairs splendidly with apple pastries, rambunctious readings of the Iliad, and our episode with Nabila. INGREDIENTS: Rachel's ginger beer; 2 oz bourbon; squeeze of fresh lemon; ice; two whole cloves
