Essän sändes ursprungligen i maj 2018. Livet verkar lätt i Arkadien. Vergilius egen samtid blandar sig in i versens skogar. Auch ich in Arkadien! utropade Goethe i sin italienska resedagbok. SynopsisOn today's date in 1923, the belated premiere of a new ballet score by French composer Gabriel Pierné took place at the Palais Garnier, the home of the Paris Opera Ballet. The ballet was finished in 1915, but due to the turmoil of World War I had to wait seven years to be staged.  Also, its lighthearted, even frivolous subject matter would hardly have seemed appropriate during the trauma of wartime, but it perfectly suited the giddy post-war Paris of the 1920s. The ballet was titled Cydalise et le Chèvre-Pied (literally "Cydalise and the Goat-Foot" or "Cydalise and the Satyr") and, like Ravel's ballet Daphnis et Chloe, featured a cast of nymphs, satyrs and the god Pan. One excerpt of the ballet, known as "The Entry of the Little Fauns," became a popular concert selection on its own, although the complete score, like most of the other music by Pierné, is rarely performed in concert these days. Of late, however, more of Pierné's melodious, well-crafted and oh-so-French scores have found their way to recordings. So anyone curious can sample more of his operas, his choral and symphonic works, and his solo piano and chamber music.Music Played in Today's ProgramGabriel Pierné (1863-1937) – The Entry of the Little Fauns, from Cydalise et le Chèvre-Pied (Orchestre National de Lille; Darrell Ang, cond.)

Synopsis On today's date in 1912 Maurice Ravel's ballet Daphnis et Chloé received its first performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, staged by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and choreographed by Michel Fokine. Some three years earlier, Diaghilev had approached Ravel about composing a ballet, and Ravel started working with Fokine on a scenario based on an old Greek pastoral romance about two lovers separated by pirates and reunited by the intervention of the god Pan. Ravel was a meticulous and slow worker, and his score for Daphnis et Chloé ended up taking three years to complete. By the time of its 1912 premiere, internal squabbles in the Diaghilev company and conceptual differences between composer and choreographer had dampened everyone's enthusiasm for the project. Even Diaghilev seemed to lose interest. In his memoirs, Pierre Monteux, the conductor of the first performance, recalled, "At first Diaghilev had been very enthusiastic with Ravel's magnificent score, but for some reason, which I have always thought was due to the weakness of the choreography, his fervor for Ravel and his music diminished to such a low pitch that it became difficult to work as we should have on the premiere." Monteux continued, "But all the musicians in the orchestra, and I might say all the musicians in Paris, knew that this was Maurice Ravel's greatest work." "It's really easy for a teacher to work 80, 90, 100 hours a week. What does that do to a person? When I'm exhausted, I'm a less effective communicator. I am less prepared to deal with the emotional challenges of the classroom. I am less likely to give grace when I'm tired. Giving 100% of yourself is not an effective educational strategy. You can't give everything."Benjamin Hawkinson is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Millikin University. Here is the bitly link to the guide & recipes - https://bit.ly/mixandmatchbowls Kim Murphy is a certified Plant Based Health Coach and the founder of Simply Plant Based Kitchen, as well as her program, Plant Powered Life. Kim is a former teacher, having taught high school band and colorguard for 17 years, but now she teaches about her other passion, whole food plant based eating. She started Simply Plant Based Kitchen because she wanted to help busy & overwhelmed people learn how to make whole food plant based eating simple, easy, and delicious so they can feel amazing and have their best health. Her first attempts at whole food plant based eating 10 years ago were not successful and only lasted a few months. Even though she lost weight and felt great, she didn't have enough simple & easy recipes that tasted good to make it last. As a busy mom, working 60+ hours a week, she was discouraged when so many recipes would take hours, have ingredients she'd never heard of, and would end up tasting terrible. Not a recipe for success. Slowly the vegan processed foods crept back in, as well as dairy, and then the wheels fell off and she was back to eating the Standard American Diet. And all the weight came back and more. The turning point was when her father passed away from Alzheimer's. He also had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, & heart disease requiring quadruple bypass. Kim decided she didn't want this to be her future or the future of her kids' and husband. She was already experiencing brain fog, was overweight, had joint pain, and was tired all the time. She went back to all the research that said a whole food plant based diet was the best way to improve health, prevent and even reverse chronic disease, and to lose weight. But even so, she was still hesitant to go back to whole food plant based eating because of her failed attempt several years prior. She knew she would have to do things differently this time and not treat it like a diet, but a lifestyle. She took a “Progress Not Perfection” approach and learned to make simple & fast recipes that tasted great with normal ingredients. It was a lot of trial and error, but she knew she couldn't give up because her life was at stake. After just 3 months, she lost 17 pounds & 20 inches, had more energy, the brain fog lifted, her joints stopped hurting, her mood improved and she felt 10 years younger! This inspired her to share it with everyone she could! So she quit her teaching job and started her business to help people skip the struggle she went through and get right to loving a whole food plant based lifestyle to improve their health, lose weight, and feel AMAZING! She's coached thousands in her program Plant Powered Life and will be coming out with a book in 2023 to inspire even more people to take control of their health with the power of plants! Kim has received her Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate through eCornell and the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, as well as her Health Coaching Certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. She continues to research and study all the fabulous doctors who are spreading the truth about health and diet like, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Neil Barnard, Dr. Dean Ornish, and so many others. Kim lives in Cedar Park, TX near Austin with her husband Shawn and 2 boys Mason & Hayden. Donald Macleod explores Ravel's meteoric rise to fame and early chamber music - including a long-lost violin sonata, and a unique arrangement for four ondes martenots. The music of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is much loved for its remarkable orchestral colours and brilliant virtuosity, heard vividly in works like Bolero, Daphnis and Chloe and Gaspard de la Nuit. But his chamber music, intimate, crystalline, and beautiful, is often overlooked. This week Donald Macleod puts that right, as he introduces every one of Ravel's works for small instrumental ensemble; an array of work that spans the composer's colourful life and career. Hear how Greek and Roman mythology have captivated composers with tales of betrayal, love and heroism. In Daphnis and Chloe, Ravel uses ravishing orchestral colors and a wordless chorus to depict this pastoral romance. Salonen finds inspiration in the epic struggles of the twin half-brothers Castor and Pollux, depicted in his two-piece orchestral composition, Gemini. Opening the program is Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte, a refreshing blend of traditional harmony and contrasting dissonance inspired by Haydn's String Quartet Op. 77, No. 2. Ticket holders are invited to a free preconcert conversation featuring Derek Matson in Orchestra Hall 75 minutes before the performance. The conversation will last approximately 30 minutes. No additional tickets required. Learn more: cso.org/performances/21-22/cso-classical/salonen-conducts-daphnis-chloe

Hi there Classical Gabfest Listeners, this is Will, and I'm afraid we don't have a regular episode for you this week. Longtime listeners to the show will know that Tiffany and Kensho and I all met at the Pierre Monteux School, which is a summer music institute focused on orchestral conducting and playing. Unfortunately, earlier this week, the school's director, Michael Jinbo, died suddenly, and as Michael was a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend to all three of us, we decided not to produce an episode this week.As a brief tribute, I wanted to say a few words about our teacher:Maestro Jinbo was only the third-ever music director of the Monteux School in its 79-year history, succeeding his own teacher, Charles Bruck, and before him, Pierre Monteux himself, whom some of you may know was the conductor of the world premieres of The Rite of Spring and Daphnis and Chloé, and who performed Brahms' string quartets for Brahms himself, among many other accomplishments.Maestro Jinbo was proud of the school's tradition, but he was very much his own musician and a great musician at that. Maestro Jinbo was not a famous conductor, but he was famous among conductors. We marveled at his crystal-clear technique and his deeply felt, uncomplicated musicality, and I know for a fact that videos of his conducting (which he would never allow to be released) circulated privately among his admirers. In rehearsal, he was totally unfussy and to-the-point. He always preferred to show and rather than to tell, but whenever he did say something about the music, it was invariably insightful, witty, and inspiring.Of course, my co-hosts and I, and many, many others of his students will remember Michael for his abilities as a teacher. He combined uncompromising honesty with a deep care for each of his students as a human being, and he taught to each student individually. He didn't waste time and he went immediately for your weaknesses, not to demean you, but to strengthen you.Above all, Michael Jinbo taught us to be our true selves, both on and off the podium. He never tried to mold us in his own image, rather he helped us to strip away our excess baggage and taught us to honor the essential core that remained. And that's just about the greatest gift that any teacher can give you. It's hard to find recordings of Michael's work, but I did find a beautiful one on YouTube, in which Michael is leading the Nittany Valley Symphony of Pennsylvania, of which he was also music director for several decades. This is a recording of the “Meditation” from Jules Massenet's opera Thaïs, featuring violinist Max Zorin, which I offer as this week's mixtape suggestion. Rest in Peace, Michael.CLASSICAL MIXTAPEMassenet, Thaïs: “Meditation”Nittany Valley Symphony OrchestraMax Zorin, violinMichael Jinbo, conductor

Composer/flutist/pianist Louis Moyse's Pastorale was written in 1925 when he was just 14 years old.  Louis was the son of the great French flutist Marcel Moyse, and he grew up steeped in Parisian culture and with the sound of the flute in his ears and his heart. That influence shows in this evocative, oh-so-French piece that sounds like a marriage between Impressionism and springtime in the French countryside.   Georg Philip Telemann, Fantaisie No. 12, performed by Karen Kevra  Louis Moyse, Pastorale, performed by Karen Kevra  John Lunn, Downton Abbey Theme, The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra  J.S. Building a Library: Jeremy Sams recommends his favourite recording of Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe (complete ballet). Maurice Ravel described his ballet, Daphnis and Chloe as a choreographic symphony. The story concerns the love between the goatherd Daphnis and the shepherdess Chloé. Ravel began work in 1909 after a commission from Sergei Diaghilev and it was premiered in Paris by his Ballets Russes in 1912. The orchestra was conducted by Pierre Monteux, the choreography was by Michel Fokine, and Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina danced the parts of Daphnis and Chloé. With rich harmonies and lush orchestrations it is one of Ravel's most popular works.
