The holidays are upon us - a time for reflection, gratitude, and connection. Unfortunately for some, the season isn't all about joy as uncertainty around resources increases anxiety and stress. The need in our community is great, so we encourage you to consider taking action on Tuesday, November 30th, for #GivingTuesday. Martha Méndez Bolaños is a true HSD success story. After emigrating to the U.S. with her family when she was just four years old, Martha began attending school in the Hillsboro School District and ultimately graduated from Hilhi. She then got hired by the District in 2012, and for the next seven years held positions at both the school and central office level while taking classes at PCC. After earning her Associate's Degree in 2019, she made the difficult decision to leave her job and pursue a Bachelor's degree at Pacific University full-time. Upon earning her degree in May of this year with a 4.0 GPA, Martha was hired by her alma mater as an English Language Development teacher. She is thrilled to be doing what she loves and giving back to her community. Read more about Martha's amazing journey in the fall 2021 edition of Pacific University's Pacific magazine. hsd.k12.or.us

--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidar-sadeghzadeh/support
‘Prudentius', Aurelius Prudentius Clemens. (348-405?) Originally written in Latin, this poem was part of a contemporary theological argument. This sounds dour, but it rocks along in Martha M. Malamud's translation. The section I've read here is about free will. Prudentius argues that when God gave man power over the beasts, he also gave him power over himself. The first five or so lines I've read here present the point of view that Prudentius is arguing against. Therefore good and evil are choices we make. A man with no choice, who is forced to do good, cannot be good. The first five or so lines I've read here present the point of view that Prudentius is arguing against. Strikingly, for all the misogyny of the poem, when Prudentius comes to relate the genesis story of Adam and Eve, although he doesn't name Eve, he doesn't blame her either. Adam had a choice, and he made it. He choose to do what he knew was wrong. Therefore he, and no one else, was to blame for his actions. Given the medieval habit of blaming Eve for ‘The Fall' it's a striking departure from the normal way the story is presented. Malamud claims that Milton would have known this poem, and and she points out, it's fascinating to read the whole poem with Paradise Lost in mind. This reading is taken from ‘The Origin of Sin, An English Translation of the Hamartigenia', by Martha. A Malamud. (2011) lines 879-957.

“We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.” Somerset Maugham This quote is packed with emotion as soon as we stop and consider how this phenomenon has played out in our own lives. I don’t agree that “It is a happy chance...to continue to love a changed person.” I think it’s a freaking miracle if we are able to continue loving while both parties are in constant transition. Somerset Maugham has managed to describe that feeling of, “I don’t know, things just feel different.” He has defined why we might wake up next to a partner of several years and feel as though we have been sleeping next to a complete stranger. Now that Maugham has identified this dynamic, we have a better chance at “choosing love.” Choosing love is one of those simple concepts which is almost impossible to execute on a consistent basis. Choosing love is not a choice, it is an extremely difficult ability to develop. It takes years of self-awareness to develop it to the point where we can do it every now and then. The bible says, “Perfect Love casteth out all fear.” While I believe that to be true, in my opinion, that concept is being stated in the reverse order of development. By removing fear, perfect love is possible. Fear is a primary function of our existence while perfect love or unconditional love is an advanced function which maybe nine people have ever been able to pull off. You might feel as though I’m being awfully negative here but our real situation is usually one of conditional love fueled by fears of loss and disappointment. Until we remove our fears, perfect love will evade us, in my opinion. Yes, we do love and maybe even love often but for the most part, it is inconsistent, partly because of what Maugham is describing. Armed with this perspective we can turn inward and try to observe how and where we are changing. Are we removing fears or adding fears? Hopefully we can use that information to choose to love another who is also changing. The piece of music I’ve chosen for this quote is the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. If you want to go “full send” and listen to the entire opera I recommend the recording with Ramon Vinay and Martha Mödl. I find Mödl’s singing to be particularly super-human. The doomed characters of Tristan and Isolde are unable to align their love during the entire drama and it is only at the end that they are united—in death. My hope is to attain perfect love without having to die first. Yet, if we were to take it one step further, in order to love perfectly it might require a sort of dying . The Hellenic concept of Agape Love comes to us through Christianity in 1st Corinthians Chapter 13. Make no mistake though, this is a Greek ideal that was drafted into Christianity. If you don’t want to take my word for it, you are welcome to read F.E. Peters’s excellent history, The Harvest of Hellenism. Part of the love chapter says, “When I became an adult, I put childish things behind me.” What does that mean in the context of love? I think it means childish and fearful emotions such as jealousy, envy, and insecurity need to be put behind us in order for us to have a chance at perfect love. The child must die so the adult can live. By performing some philosophical gymnastics we can now look to the Liebestod as the death of the child and the unification of Tristan and Isolde as a union of fully integrated adult individuals. Yes? No? The piece of art is Tristan and Isolde by Rogelio de Egusquiza. Rogelio collaborated with Wagner and dedicated the majority of his career to painting subjects from Wagner’s operas. That’s it for today. I’m sending you all love, albeit love which is conditioned by whether or not you subscribe, but still love to you all and I’ll see you tomorrow with another Infusion of High Culture.

On this week’s journal club, David Rosenthal, Audrey Provenzano, and Thomas Kim discuss Less AND More are Needed to Assess Primary Care, which was recently published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine by Rebecca Etz, PhD, Martha M. Gonzalez, BS, E. Marshall Brooks, PhD, and Kurt C. Stange, MD PhD. The study utilized surveys to assess the lacuna between current quality measures and attributes of high quality primary care, and make the case that as policymakers and payers work to reduce the administrative burden of quality measurement more attention should be paid to measuring domains of high quality primary care. What do you think? How do you know good primary care when you see it? How should the quality of primary care be assessed? Please tweet us your thoughts @RoSpodcast, or drop us a line at contact@rospod.org. And, let us know what manuscripts you think we should look at in journal clubs and who we should have on to talk about their work. We look forward to hearing from you, and thanks for listening!

The #MeToo movement has transformed American political debate, having a huge influence on prominent figures in a number of arenas. Many believe it could play a role in voter turnout during the midterm campaigns and even carry weight with the 2020 presidential election. Regardless of its specific effects, one thing is certain: America is experiencing a stunning period in the history of gender politics. Award-winning actress Amber Tamblyn, author of a new book, “Any Man,” joins this episode with Julian Zelizer to discuss this period in American history. Released this week by Harper Collins, the fictional book sheds light on the nightmare of sexual assault. Tamblyn first came to national attention in her role on the soap opera “General Hospital” as Emily Quartermaine, followed by a starring role on the prime-time series “Joan of Arcadia,” portraying the title character, Joan Girardi for which she received Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Tamblyn’s feature film work includes roles in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” (2005), “The Grudge 2” (2006), “The Ring” (2002), and “127 Hours” (2010); she had an extended arc as Martha M. Masters in the medical drama series House. She also had a starring role as Jenny on season eleven of the CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”
