Ross teases the deep dive on Kobe Bryant but asks J.A. about being honored as the winner of the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame and what it was like to be considered an all-time great in basketball journalism. 9:12 ... World B asks J.A. about those who influenced him the most as a writer.  J.A. mentioned Jim Murray, David Aldridge, Mike Wilbon, and many others. 11:17 ... J.A. puts into perspective why Los Angeles loved Kobe the man as much as they loved him as an athlete.  The way he embraced LA and knew all the different neighborhoods were huge reasons. 27:03 ... Kobe was known to do research on people he would meet for the first time in order to put them at ease.  But while J.A. never witnessed that, he praised Kobe for the way he handled his relationships with members of the local media.  J.A. said that in the age of social media, modern athletes put less emphasis on those relationships. 29:19 ... Kobe and Michael Jordan were similar in many ways and J.A. explains that it was both a conscious effort on Kobe's part and simply a matter of MJ and Kobe being cut from the same cloth.  J.A. feels that eventually Kobe came to regret those comparisons. 32:16 ... Was there one moment from Kobe's career that stood out to J.A.?  Well ... there were a few!  The game 7 comeback vs Portland in 2000 was memorable because of Kobe's giddiness. 35:24 ... Bruce's favorite Kobe/J.A. moment was from an NBA Coast to Coast show in Kobe's final season and J.A. describes what happened that night.  J.A. uses that incident in his current job as a journalism professor at Northwestern as a teachable moment for his students. 38:49 ... Bruce asks about LeBron James and whether he has begun to mentally check out now that he has played an NBA game with his son Bronny.  J.A. thinks it is possible because there is really nothing left to achieve. 40:30 ... J.A. makes his predictions for the rest of the season .. OKC wins the west, Boston wins the east, and Boston wins the championship. 42:19 ... Bruce asks J.A. if he is getting the "1995 Rockets vibe" about the Celtics where a defending champion looks less than dominant in the regular season but ends up repeating due to their "heart of a champion?" 43:43 ... Ross wonders if J.A. has any feeling on who the next "American face" of the league might be ... or even if there will be one? 47:58 ... If J.A. were starting his career over again, which player would he want to cover the most?  LeBron James might be the guy.  Michael Jordan too. 50:33 ... Ross thanks J.A. ... who thanks Bruce for helping him make some money working in TV!  And we'll see you next week!   TRT 51:17

0:00 ... Ross introduction for episode #90, dedicated to Drew Gooden. 0:33 ... Ross live Bet Online commercial read 1:10 ... Bruce's opening comment is on his friend JA Adande, who was named the winner of the 2024 Curt Gowdy Media Award by the Basketball Hall of Fame over the weekend at the All Star Game.  He tells a story of JA's interview with Kobe Bryant on ESPN's NBA Coast to Coast during Kobe's final season that featured a very special moment. 3:01 ... World B's opening comment is on a touching moment involving LeBron James and NBA journalist Jeff Zilgitt at All Star Weekend. 4:27 ... Ross's opening comment is on Damian Lillard's successful weekend in Indianapolis which will hopefully jump start Milwaukee's season as we hit the stretch run starting on February 22nd. 6:14 ... The Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Jacque Vaughn but Bruce feels that general manager Sean Marks is the one who should have been fired.  World B understands that the Nets have been in a tailspin but many of their losses came against top shelf teams, so management's expectations might have been really unfair.  Ross pointed out that the front office might have thought Ben Simmons was more capable than he appears to be and that Vaughn may have been unfairly blamed for his struggles. 11:12 ... Ross feels that Cam Thomas was an outspoken critic of Vaughn and World B feels like Thomas is a remorseless gunner who should not have as much influence as he may have. 12:25 ... Ross begins the discussion of All Star Weekend with a recap of the Rising Stars Game and the Skills Challenge. 13:23 ... The Dunk Contest was next and Mac McClung impressed everyone with his athleticism and creativity.  Bruce was underwhelmed by the rest of the Slam Dunk Contest and would like to see it become a smaller player's (6'5" and under) competition since seeing smaller guys dunk would be more fun.  However, everyone agrees that Victor Wembanyama should be allowed to compete as the lone exception if the 6'5" rule is ever implemented.  World B points out that the Dunk contest needs bigger names competing.  Jaylen Brown was the biggest name this year and everyone was impressed that he chose to compete. 18:54 ... As for the 3 Point Shootout, Damian Lillard won it but it was overshadowed by the "Steph Curry vs Sabrina Ionescu" 3 Point challenge.  The guys want Sabrina and Caitlin Clark to be in the Men's 3 point Shootout next year. 21:31 ... Sabrina vs Steph was the highlight of the weekend and the respect between the two was really impressive. 23:33 ... The All Star game itself was a total joke.  Since the NBA scrapped Elam Ending this year, they lost the chance for some real excitement as the game devolved into a glorified layup line.  Bruce then tells a story he heard from ESPN's Tim Legler about a former teammate who never played much, but kept track of his points in the pregame layup line.  Ross and World B agreed the Elam Ending should return.  World B was irate about the fact that the players didn't care about the game, so why should the fans? 26:52 ... Damian Lillard was named MVP of the game but everyone agreed that it should have been Tyrese Haliburton. 29:11 ... The guys liked the LED floor and hope to see it again, but not for regular season games.  maybe just for All Star weekend and possibly for the in-season tournament games. 29:56 ... Ross and World B discuss whether LeBron James will really want a farewell tour after James was asked about it over the weekend. 31:13 ... Ross and Bruce discuss Jayson Tatum meeting Larry Bird for the first time even though Tatum is in his 7th NBA season with the Celtics. 32:59 ... Ross begins the second half with a discussion of teams the guys expect to peak at the right time.  Bruce likes Phoenix.  World B wants to see if the Clippers and Timberwolves can do it.  Ross feels the Warriors are capable of peaking at the right time.  Bruce also feels like Sacramento could very well have a strong "closing kick." 36:33 ... Players to watch?  Bruce wants to see Khris Middleton get healthy because Milwaukee become a threat to win the east if he does.  World B hopes Julius Randle and OG Anunoby can regain their health so the Knicks can put their best team on the floor and see what happens.  World B wants to see Damian Lillard step up too. 39:07 ... Ross wants to see if LeBron James has a burst left as the Lakers struggle to make the postseason field. 41:30 ... Bruce's final thought is on Scot Pollard, the 6'11" former player who needed and received a heart transplant on Friday. 43:06 ... World B's final thought is on the Golden State Warriors and how they're much improved as we approach the stretch run. 45:25 ... Ross teed up a brief discussion on Draymond Green joining TNT's alternate broadcast over the weekend in the wake of his "issues" this season.  That discussion segued into some thoughts on how Adam Silver's postgame comments on the court certainly made it appear that he was not happy with how the All Star Game looked to the public. 48:29 ... Ross's final thought is on the "48 Minutes Live" Playback.TV game on Thursday night at 9:00pm ET between the Hornets and the Jazz. 51:00 ... Ross says goodbye ... TRT 51:16

Take a trip around the world with Alexander Wolff, one of the most lyrical writers of his era. He shares some gems from chronicling basketball's international growth during his 36 years at Sports Illustrated. We're in a car with him, Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra at 3 a.m. We tag along to remote Asia where royalty wasn't keen on man-to-man D. We hear about Jerry Tarkanian making an offer that Alex refused. Go to Tobacco Road and learn the differences between Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski. Alex recounts the college version of Michael Jordan, and how MJ helped spread hoops around the planet. We also talk a little football as Alex explains the backstory of his open letter to The U and its blowback from outraged Miami fans.   The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame recognized Wolff with its 2011 Curt Gowdy Media Award for lifetime contributions to the game as a print journalist. Alex joined Sports Illustrated as a researcher in September 1980 after earning a bachelor's degree in history with honors from Princeton, where he had served as a freelance writer for the Trenton Times. Wolff became a writer at SI in 1982, at age 25, and the magazine named him a senior writer in 1985.   Besides basketball, Wolff also covered the Olympics, the World Cup, the World Series, every Grand Slam tennis event, and the Tour de France before leaving Sports Illustrated and SI.com in 2016 as the longest-tenured writer on staff. He reported from China, Cuba, Russia and Iran, and often wrote about issues where and sports and society intersect.   Wolff's work has been anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing, Best Sports Stories, Sports Illustrated's Fifty Years of Great Writing, and The Princeton Anthology of Writing. In 1996, Alex collaborated with Hoop Dreams filmmakers Peter Gilbert and Steve James to make Team of Broken Dreams, which detailed the impact of the Yugoslav crisis on basketball players from the Balkans. The documentary, based on one of Wolff's Sports Illustrated articles and broadcast on NBC, was nominated for an Emmy and won the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Media Award. When he served as president of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Wolff helped found the USBWA's Full Court Press journalism scholarship and seminar program. He is the former owner of the now defunct Vermont Frost Heaves, which won American Basketball Association championships in 2007 and 2008.   Wolff is the author or co-author of seven books about basketball: Wolf also edited and introduced a collection of basketball writing for the Library of America in 2018 called “Basketball: Great Writing about America's Game.”   “Endpaper: A Family Story of Books, War, Escape, and Home” is Wolff's latest book, published in 2021. He explores the lives of his grandfather and father, who were both born in Germany and later became American citizens.   Check out Alex's website: https://alexanderwolff.com/   Read articles that Alex wrote for Sports Illustrated: https://alexanderwolff.com/stories-for-sports-illustrated/   Follow him on Twitter: @alexander_wolff Learn more about your ad choices. Harvey Araton is one of New York’s—and the nation’s—best-known sports journalists, having covered thousands of Knicks games over the course of a long and distinguished career. But the person at the heart of OUR LAST SEASON: A Writer, a Fan, a Friendship , is Michelle Musler, a fan who was largely anonymous—except, that is, to the players, coaches, and writers who passed through Madison Square Garden. Musler held season tickets behind the Knicks bench and missed only a few games over the course of 45 years, becoming as big a staple at the Garden as Spike Lee. She and Araton formed an extraordinary friendship during hours spent at the arena—Araton reporting on the latest matchup and Musler cheering on the team, always in her seat and never late. Basketball is the foundation for Araton and Musler's story, but OUR LAST SEASON is a universal narrative of the bittersweet moments of transition we all experience and the special people we entrust to help us get through them. About the Author Harvey Araton is a longtime New York City sports journalist who worked for 25 years at The New York Times , to which he still contributes. He is the author or co-author of seven books, most recently Driving Mr. Yogi , which was a New York Times bestseller. His book When the Garden Was Eden was made into an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, which Araton co-produced. In 2017, he received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He lives in Montclair, New Jersey. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support
