Philadelphia's dean of baseball writers Rich Westcott ("The Mogul: Eddie Gottlieb, Philadelphia Sports Legend and Pro Basketball Pioneer") steps outside the batter's box this week to help us go deep into the story of one of pro basketball's most foundational figures, Eddie Gottlieb. Armed with a great smile and a razor-sharp memory, the Ukranian-born and South Philly-raised Gottlieb was a multi-faceted hoops pioneer - rules innovator, successful coach, masterful promoter, and logistics wizard - whose tactical talents and business acumen gave rise to what would ultimately evolve into today's NBA. In 1918, Gottlieb organized and coached a social club-sponsored amateur team for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (SPHA) that he grew into a regionally dominant and ultimately professional powerhouse; from the late 1920s to early 1940s, the SPHAs dominated the original Eastern and American Basketball Leagues, winning multiple championships and regularly beating prominent touring clubs like the Original Celtics and the New York Renaissance Five (Rens). In 1946, Gottlieb helped establish a new professional league - the Basketball Association of America. As owner, general manager, coach, and "promoter-in-chief" of the league's Philadelphia Warriors, he won the BAA’s first championship in 1946-47. Three seasons later, Gottlieb played a pivotal role in the merger of the BAA with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association, where his Warriors would win a second league crown in 1956, and to which he would later add the groundbreaking talents of one Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. After selling the team in 1962, Gottleib became the NBA's "Mr. Basketball" - the definitive and authoritative resource spanning league rules, history, scheduling, and operations - until his death in 1979. He is immortalized not only as a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, but also as the name on the trophy given annually to the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

John opens up this version of the program by simplifying the difference between a good team and a bad team, a good coach and a bad coach, a great star player and a very good star player. It is whether their team wins or loses- whether their team scores in some cases one more run, one more point, or one more goal than their opponent. Seems cavalier to say that, maybe even patronizing, but we tend to judge coaches (managers) and star players by their ability to win. Most of the time, they have less to do with the winning or losing. John cited the careers of Andy Reid, Doug Pederson, Casey Stengel, Bruce Bochy, Joe Torre, Mike Brown, LeBron James, and others to prove that the best do not win all the time. But most importantly, John shows that the win or the loss is the determining factor for how good a team is, not how good the coach/ manager or star player is. John spends a little time talking about baseball and its non- tender deadline and why fans/ media need to just allow each MLB team to determine whether their players are warranted a contract for the next season. John compares the great careers of Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle and declares Mickey would win in a poll because there are less people responding to the poll that saw Joe D play. John chooses Mickey, but by the slightest of margins and explains why. Finally, why is Drazen Petrovic in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and not Reggie Lewis?

The 34th edition of Whe're They At features Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer as a player AND coach, Lenny Wilkens. He was one of the greatest players to come out of the New York City area, graduating Boys High School in Brooklyn. He starred at Providence College, later being inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was a 9-time NBA All-Star as a player AND 4 times, he coached in the All-Star Game. Coach Wilkens led the Seattle Supersonics to their ONLY NBA championship in 1979. He was part of the coaching staff for the legendary 1992 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team, aka the Dream Team and won another Gold medal leading the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team. He is one of four individuals to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a player AND coach. Last but not least, he is part of the NBA 50th Anniversary team and was recognized as one of Top-10 coaches in NBA history. We all know his impressive basketball resume: National Championship as a player at Archbishop Carroll High School; NBA Championship as a member of the Boston Celtics; National Championship at Georgetown University; and enshrinement into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.Those accomplishments will always be remembered along with the impact he had on the countless number of people he met in his lifetime. Coach Boeheim has been associated with Syracuse since 1962 as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. He has coached the Syracuse Orange to Final Fours in 4 different decades. He won the NCAA Championship in 2003 & made 2 other championship games in 1987 and 1996. His team has participated in 5 Final Fours, 19 Sweet 16s and 33 tournaments overall in his 44 years as head coach at Syracuse. He has led the Orange to the postseason, either the NCAA or NIT tournaments in EVERY season they were eligible. Coach Boeheim was inducted Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. Alexander Wolff spent thirty-six years writing for Sports Illustrated and is the author or co-author of seven books on basketball, including The Audacity of Hoop: Basketball and the Age of Obama; the New York Times best seller Raw Recruits; and Big Game, Small World: A Basketball Adventure, a 2002 New York Times Notable Book. In 2011 he received the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy Media Award for lifetime coverage of the game. His "Big Game, Small World: A Basketball Odyssey," an account of a year spent chasing basketball around the world, was published in 2002., with 27 chapters on 27 stops.He also served as editor for the brilliant Basketball :Great Writing About America's Game, an anthology which includes some the best collection of basketball writing ever assembled,Wolff joins host Pat Price to talk about his love for the sport, memories from his journey around the globe writing Big Game, Small World and other pieces, his current projects, and the future of sports writing. The 25th edition of Whe're They At features Atlanta Hawks head coach and community activist, Lloyd Pierce. Lloyd starred at Santa Clara University as a guard alongside Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Steve Nash. After playing professionally overseas, he paid his dues in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in player development and assistant coaching for over a decade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers. He finally received the opportunity to become a head coach, with the Atlanta Hawks in 2018. In Atlanta, Coach Pierce is developing one of the most promising young teams in the NBA. He's become a powerful presence as an activist against systemic racism and police brutality. He also spearheaded the start of a committee by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) on Racial Injustice and Reform. Negro League ace historian/author Jim Overmyer (Queen of the Negro Leagues: Effa Manley and the Newark Eagles; Black Ball and the Boardwalk: The Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City) returns for a deep dive into the extraordinary dual-sport career of Negro League baseball AND Black Fives-era basketball legend Cumberland Posey – including the two dominating teams he founded, owned, managed, and played for – baseball’s Homestead Grays and basketball’s Loendi Big Five. Considered the best African-American hoops player of his time (although not inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame until 2016), Posey was a standout collegiate player at Pitt, Penn State and Duquense before launching his semi-pro Loendi club in 1915 – which he built and led to four consecutive Colored Basketball World's Championships from 1919-1923. Posey was already moonlighting as a player with Negro League baseball’s Grays starting in 1911, becoming the team’s manager in 1916, and finally its owner by the early 1920s – ultimately building one of the powerhouses of black baseball. Posey’s Homestead franchise won eleven pennants across three leagues – including nine consecutive Negro National League titles from 1937-45 – and three Negro World Series Championships (against counterparts from the Negro American League) in ’43, ’44 & ’48. Overmyer discusses his new book (Cum Posey of the Homestead Grays: A Biography of the Negro Leagues Owner and Hall of Famer), Posey’s prodigious talents both as a player and owner (which garnered him posthumous induction in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006), and the Grays’ twin homes of both suburban Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. Episode 46: “Boiler UP” feat Purdue Assistant Coach Brandon Brantley @coachbbrantley on Twitter Brandon Brantley enters his eighth year as an assistant coach at Purdue. Brantley spends the majority of his on-court duties coaching Purdue’s big men. Three years ago, Brantley helped Purdue to a school-record 30 wins and its second straight Sweet 16 appearance. Purdue is the only school in America to have three different players in the last three years be named finalist for a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame position award (Abdul-Jabbar Award, Malone Award). Brantley was a key figure in Purdue’s run of success in the Big Ten Conference in the mid-90s. He helped the Boilermakers to three Big Ten Championships, serving as the team captain of the 1995-96 squad that posted a 26-6 overall record, a 15-3 Big Ten mark and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament’s West Region. The 18th edition of Whe're They At features 3-time ABA All-Star guard, NCAA and NBA champion as a head coach & Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, Larry Brown. He is the ONLY coach in basketball history to win a NCAA (1987-88 w/Kansas University) and NBA championship (2003-04 w/Detroit Pistons). The 14th edition of Whe're They At features Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and one of the most prolific basketball players (male or female) ever, Nancy Lieberman. Nancy is still the youngest American basketball player in Olympic history, playing on the 1976 USA Olympic team at 18 years old. She went on to augment the Old Dominion Univ. women's basketball program and become one of the greatest players in the history of the WBL (Women's Professional Basketball League), while competing against men in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Summer Leagues, USBL (United States Basketball League) and on the Washington Generals (regular opponent to the Harlem Globetrotters). Remembering Morgan Wootten, Jim Lehrer, Mr. PeanutMorgan Wootten was the basketball coach at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland for 46 years. He won five national championships and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the first high school coach to earn that honor. Jim Lehrer was the outstanding journalist and news anchor for the PBS NewsHour (1983-2011). His work with Robert MacNeil became a standard for television journalism. He was also a respected novelist and playwright. With his familiar monocle and top hat, Mr. Peanut was the familiar mascot for Planters for over a century.

Author Abe Aamidor joins Tim to talk about those iconic Chuck Taylor Converse All Star shoes. The Chuck Taylor story, how he was the first to have an athletic shoe named after him, and how a classic basketball shoe came to stand for rock and roll, the counter culture, and today a major fashion statement. They are canvas on top, usually white or black. The soles are white rubber around the toe and then around the sides to the back. The bottoms have a trademark dark rubber waffle pattern. The people who wear them have an emotional connection to the shoes. They like the way they look, the way they feel. If you wear the high-top version, on the inside of your ankle, there is that trademark blue star set in a white circle, flanked by that name in script. Chuck Taylor. By now, you know we’re talking about Converse Chuck Taylor All Star athletic shoes. He didn’t own the company. He didn’t invent the shoe. He wasn’t a millionaire professional basketball player. Yet he was the first one to have his name put on an athletic shoe, and what a shoe it is. About Chuck Taylor Chuck Taylor was born in Indiana in 1901. Right after high school, he played professional basketball. Teams were the Columbus Commercials and the Akron Firestone (Non-skids). Converse first produced its All Star athletic shoe in 1917. By 1921 or 22, Chuck Taylor joined the Converse Rubber Shoe Co., and that’s when he became a shoe salesman. That became his profession and would lead to his legacy. For perspective, the NBA won’t be founded for another 28 years. Chuck Taylor first joined Converse in Chicago. Chuck Taylor would help redesign the shoes and become and a champion for the game of basketball in America. He was a player and coach for a team called the Converse All Stars, which was an industrial league basketball team. He created the Converse Basketball Yearbook, where players, teams and big moments were highlighted. And he conducted basketball clinics all across the country. He promoted the shoes at the grassroots level, and non-stop. In 1932, Converse put his name on the ankle patch. He didn’t get any special payment for this. He was paid an employee’s salary, and he was on a salesman’s expense account. Those shoes are the best-selling basketball shoe in history. In 1969, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He died the same year at the age of 67 from a heart attack. After Chuck Taylor Adidas had made inroads with new styles of shoes on the basketball court. Then Nike entered the picture in the 1970s. But then you started to see rock bands wearing the shoes in concerts, and a whole new Chuck Taylor fan base emerged. Chuck Taylor shoes became a statement for counter culture, for rock and roll, for new counter culture sports like skateboarding. And today, they are now a fashion statement that cuts across all generations and are worn around the world. In 2003, Nike bought the Converse Chuck Taylor shoe brand. Converse sells roughly 270,000 pairs of Chuck Taylors every day of the year. The Buffalo Braves were one of three NBA expansion franchises (along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers) that began play in the 1970–71 season. Originally owned by a wobbly investment firm with few ties to Buffalo, the Braves eventually found a local backer in Freezer Queen founder Paul Snyder – who, by the end of the first season, had inherited a team that was neither good (penultimate league records of 22-60 in each of its first two seasons), nor easy to schedule (third-choice dates for Buffalo’s venerable Memorial Auditorium behind the also-new NHL hockey Buffalo Sabres, and Canisius Golden Griffins college basketball). Snyder addressed the Braves’ on-court issues by luring head coach Dr. Jack Ramsey from the Philadelphia 76ers, while drafting key players like high-scoring (and later Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Famer) Bob McAdoo, eventual NBA Rookie of the Year Ernie DiGregorio, and local (via Buffalo State) crowd favorite Randy Smith – yielding three consecutive playoff appearances from 1973-74 to 1975-76. Off the court, Snyder looked to regionalize the team’s appeal beyond “The Aud” by scheduling select home games in places like Rochester, Syracuse and even Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens – and team attendance, TV ratings and revenues achieved league-average levels. By the summer of 1976, however, Snyder was facing severe pressure to sell the team and get it out of “The City of Good Neighbors.” Of particular consternation was Canisius president Fr. James Demske, who publicly thwarted the Braves’ attempts at decent home dates – which angered the NBA enough to force the issue with Snyder. Snyder, who said he was losing money anyway, threatened to move the Braves to suburban Miami’s Hollywood Sportatorium, a deal that collapsed after the city of Buffalo sued and secured a new 15-year Aud lease – with a provision it could be broken if the team didn’t sell 5,000 season tickets in any future season. Author and Western New York native Tim Wendel (Buffalo, Home of the Braves) joins the pod to discuss the convoluted story of what happened next, including: Snyder’s ownership sales to former ABA owner (and eventual Kentucky governor) John Y. Brown and businessman Harry Mangurian; The subsequent dismantling of the team and overt attempts to drive down attendance to break the Aud lease; The two-season coaching and player carousel that followed – including the curious six-minute career of Moses Malone; AND How the Braves’ eventual move in 1978 to become the San Diego Clippers wouldn’t have happened without the Boston Celtics. Jason Kidd embodied the qualities of a Hall of Fame player throughout the course of his NBA career. He was fiercely competitive; he was devoted to playing perfect team basketball; he was a tireless worker and student of the game, meticulously professional in everything he did on the court. Every team he ever played for was dramatically more successful after his arrival, and dramatically less so after his departure. Kidd was a ten-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA First Team member, and a nine-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He won an NBA Championship in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, and was a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner during his pro career, as part of Team USA in 2000 and 2008. Most recently, Kidd was inducted to the 2018 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. In this episode, Kidd discusses his journey to the NBA and biggest career accomplishments, his experience coaching the next generation of players, as well as what's next for him. Veteran sportswriter Mark Montieth (Reborn: The Pacers and the Return of Pro Basketball to Indianapolis) returns to the podcast (Episode #41) to help complete the story of the Indiana Pacers’ nine-year sojourn through the American Basketball Association – including its shaky transition into a merger-expanded NBA in 1976. Arguably the most stable and successful franchise in the ABA’s short but colorful history, the franchise nearly collapsed under its own weight after its inaugural National Basketball Association campaign – if not for a hastily arranged 1977 Independence Day weekend telethon fundraiser devised by head coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard and his wife Nancy, that miraculously saved the team and cemented its place in the Indianapolis cultural landscape. Along the way, however, the ABA Pacers made indelible marks on both the city and the basketball establishment, including: barn-burning rivalries (especially with the Kentucky Colonels and Utah Stars); stellar local collegiate talent signings (including Purdue All-American and Sports Illustrated high school cover boy Rick Mount, and Indiana University standout and eventual Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer George McGinnis); a downtown-revitalizing, franchise-stabilizing, state-of-the-art Market Square Arena; and the acrobatic, yet distinctively ‘fro’ed Darnell “Dr. Dunk” Hillman, who just may have been able to leap high enough to nab quarters off the top of backboards, according to sportswriter legend. This weekend the halls of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame will be opened to one of the legends of women's basketball. Rebecca Lobo is a woman whose success off the court as well as on has earned her a spot in the Hall, just down the road from where she grew up in Massachusetts, and about an hour from the University of Connecticut where she introduced women's basketball to so many now rabid Husky fans. There are articles all over talking about Lobo's career as a player, her influence on the women's basketball community and more. We will let those show that side of Lobo. We will show you a little bit of a different side we hope. Today we are celebrating Lobo with two people that know her as well as anyone, her ESPN broadcast partners Ryan Ruocco and Holly Rowe. As individuals, Ruocco and Rowe are two of the very best at what they do, covering everything from baseball and softball, football, and men's and women's basketball. It is a pleasure to welcome both back to Dishin & Swishin to talk about the Lobo we see and don't see; the person that greets the fans, tweets about her family and airports, but also the friend and confidant that puts in the work and prep with her colleagues to help make the broadcasts sound so good.
