Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson & Darius Miles

We got Cynthia “Raise the Roof” Cooper in the building ladies and gents! Question: Who was the first person to bust her ass in the WNBA? Answer: NOBODY. Coop takes us back to her childhood, and how Lynette Woodard – the first female Harlem Globetrotter – was the female basketball player she looked up to. She talks about the dynamic duo she and Cheryl Miller formed at USC, the decade she spent dominating the basketball scene in Italy, and how she spoiled herself with some fine Italian leather goods while she was there. Luckily, she came back to represent the USA and win some gold, and then stuck around to play in the first ever WNBA season. She speaks about her elite Houston Comets team — you know, that one with Coop, Tina Thompson AND Sheryl Swoopes. Yeesh. How they won four — that’s back to back to backto back! — championships. Coop breaks down why she is absolutely made to be a coach in the NBA, and there’s just no disagreeing. Straight facts. Settle in and get ready for this episode. The first woman to be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame, Cynthia Cooper is a legend of the game. Period. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sidney Moncrief was an NBA superstar with the Milwaukee Bucks, earning countless awards and accomplishments, including the ultimate honor of being selected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Sidney's successes are not limited to the court, as he's also emerged as a leader in business, coaching, writing, and consulting. In our conversation in the SGG podcast, we discussed: 1. What he learned from his high school coach, the legendary Oliver Elders: “He placed a very high emphasis on being a quality person. That superseded anything you did on the court… He made us realize that life was much more than just basketball.” 2. “We knew he cared about us as people.” 3. “Your impact lasts beyond those three or four years that you have with those players. It's going to stay with them for a lifetime. If you instill just selfishness and you caring about being a winning coach without caring about them academically or as people, that's what they're going to spill out for the rest of their life. If you show them love, you show them compassion, you show them that accountability matters, that being a good teammate matters, being a good person matters, character matters, that's what they're going to show for the rest of their lives.” 4. The critical time that Coach Eddie Sutton offered compliments to Sidney and his teammates – an occasion that built their confidence and spurred them on to the Final Four the next season. 5. The importance of Coach Sutton's assistant coaches giving him advice to instill confidence in his players… and Coach Sutton's willingness to listen to them. 6. What it felt like to get “called to the coach's office.” 7. “Greatness was not even part of our mindset. He interjected that greatness theory.” 8. The importance of timing in coaches' conversations with their teams. 9. His wake-up call to the physicality of the NBA – and how Coach Don Nelson guided him to playing defense at the highest level. 10. The thing that really makes you a great coach: Maintaining high expectations of players. 11. “Players today need to know why they're doing certain things.” 12. The influence of his upbringing on his development as a tenacious competitor. 13. The importance of having experienced players as models for younger ones to learn from. 14. Discipline as an everyday part of life. 15. His new book. 16. Exercise, rest, rejuvenation, and personal care: “There's only so much film you should be watching…The players don't get the best you when you're constantly watching film and are constantly stressed out.” 17. Knowing and respecting the different motivations that players bring to the table. 18. What he means by “tenacity” in his new book. “Pace, aggressiveness, focus, determination…” 19. “Love what you do and do what you love…and change the world!”

Good Seats Still Available

Pittsburgh-based The Athletic sportswriter Stephen J. Nesbitt (“How the Pipers, Condors and Pro Basketball in Pittsburgh Went Extinct”) joins to help us dig into the surprisingly rich (though mostly woeful) history of professional hoops in the Steel City. Though the game has long thrived at the collegiate level (Pitt’s Panthers began playing in 1905; the Duquesne Dukes in 1914), the city’s record of success at the pro level has been distinctly more fleeting.  In fact, some would argue it was never better than the pre-integration Black Fives era of the 1910s/20s, when eventual Naismith Hall of Famer Cumberland Posey led his Monticello (1912) and Loendi Big Five (1919-23) clubs to five “Colored” Basketball World Championships. As professional (and eventually integrated) leagues took root in the decades that followed, Pittsburgh’s attractive demographic profile made it a natural choice for inaugural – yet ultimately short-lived – franchises in virtually every major hardwood circuit that came calling, including: The never-playoff-qualifying Pirates (1937-39) and re-born Raiders (1944-45) of the NBA-precedent National Basketball League; The lamentable Ironmen (1947-48) of the NBA tributary Basketball Association of America; The Connie Hawkins-led Renaissance (“Rens”) of the one-and-a-half-season (1961-62) American Basketball League; and especially; The head-scratching Pipers of the legendary American Basketball Association – who, despite winning the league’s first championship behind regular-season and playoff MVP Hawkins in 1968 – relocated to Minneapolis, moved back to Pittsburgh, and finally re-branded as the “Condors” for two forgettable last seasons (1970-72). With a checkered pro history like that, it’s little wonder that the basketball team most memorably associated with the City of Bridges wasn’t even a real club – the Pittsburgh Pisces (née Pythons) of the 1979 sports/disco fantasy cult film classic The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.

Professional athletes can have fame, often good fortune and the great ones take being a role model seriously. Three time Olympian, Women’s Basketball and Naismith Hall of Famer and WNBA superstar, Katie Smith, is that and more. She has always been an authentic spark of positive energy on and off the court. Katie dominated women’s basketball in high school and college as well as the ABL & WNBA professional leagues. In addition, she's also embraced being a leader and is highly decorated with awards and championships. On top of it all, she’s been a true team player at every level and an advocate to inspire girls to be positive, motivated and strong. Today on Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast, we talk about resilience...especially during job transitions. Katie Smith, shares her story going from a player to coach in the WNBA. I smiled throughout the interview knowing that so many of her comments were incredibly relatable. We often have to pivot our lives, when something bad happens. When we lose a job, lose a loved one or just lose direction on what we want in life...having some advice on how to handle those hard times can make putting one foot in front of the other easier. Katie Smith has wise words on how she did it in the WNBA...and how we can all do it, as well. Miller’s eight-year career as head coach at Trine University has included eight consecutive top-four MIAA finishes which culminated in the 2019 MIAA Regular-Season Championship. The 2019 MIAA Title was the first MIAA Championship in Trine history and marked the first outright MIAA Championship by a school other than Hope (Mich.) College or Calvin (Mich.) College since 2005. The team was led by senior Pete Smith who was named the MIAA’s "Most Valuable Player" as well as Marcus Winters who would earn the MIAA’s "Defensive Player of the Year" award. The 2018-19 team also set Trine’s D-III record for wins in a season with 19 victories The Thunder have posted an overall record of 124-86 under Miller’s guidance including a 68-44 mark against MIAA foes. In 2016, Trine advanced to the MIAA Tournament Championship game for the first time in school history after defeating No. 5 Hope on its home floor in the semifinal round. Miller also led Trine to its first-ever home game in the MIAA Semifinals in 2014-15 as the Thunder placed second in the conference. Miller's basketball career started when he was a player at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio and at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. At Hillsdale in 2003, Miller was selected team captain, Academic All-Conference, and team "Defensive Player of the Year." Hillsdale reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time in school history during Miller’s sophomore and junior season’s in 2001 and 2002. Miller worked as an assistant men's basketball coach for three Hall of Fame coaches that amassed seven National Championships throughout their careers. Miller began his collegiate coaching career working for BCAM Hall of Fame Coach Ed Douma (one National Championship) whom he previously played for at Hillsdale. In 2007, his career took him to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where he served as a graduate assistant coach to Naismith Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight (three National Championships) and was involved with on-campus recruiting and player development. In 2009, he became the Head Assistant Men’s Basketball coach and National Recruiting Coordinator at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas for Junior College Hall of Fame Coach Steve Green (three National Championships). While at South Plains, Coach Miller coached and or recruited nine players that would transfer on to NCAA Division I Universities. Sob a sua gerência, a franquia de Louisiana só chegou três vezes à pós-temporada e avançou para as semifinais da Conferência Oeste apenas uma vez. Tom McMillen on his former University of Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell ~ ". . .Lefty, I still keep in touch with him. He's indomitable. He's really a special person. He should be in the Naismith Hall of Fame. It's such an injustice. I mean when he retired as an active coach, there were only three other coaches who had more wins than he did. I think it was Dean Smith. . ." Tom McMillen, Retired Basketball Pro, Rhodes Scholar, Public Servant, Businessman, and Philanthropist in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. We have such a special man to talk to today. He's done so much in his lifetime, it's tough for me to keep up with him. But not only is he six feet 11, but he's got a track record that's unbelievable what he's done in the community. From playing professional basketball in the NBA to serving as US Congressman from the fourth congressional district of Maryland. He was a Rhodes Scholar. He's written a book about ethics and sports. He's been on a board of directors for the President's Foundation on sports, physical education, and nutrition. And these are only a few of his accomplishments, in addition to the unique distinction of being the tallest member of Congress. I got to know Tom McMillen with my involvement many, many years ago with Lefty Driesell and the University of Maryland. Tom McMillen, welcome to Our Town. Tom McMillen Loses U.S. Congressional Seat to Gerrymandering Tom McMillen: Well, it's great to be here Andy. Andy Ockershausen: Our Town is so big now, McMillen. Everywhere you went except Pennsylvania was Our Town. Certainly when you were in Congress in the fourth district was part, it's still part of Our Town. But they changed the voting district and they voted you out. Tom McMillen: It's the whole thing about gerrymandering they talk about today. Well, my district was basically split up into six different congressional districts. It's not new. It happens all over. The real question for me was ... It would have been nice to stay in Congress maybe 10, 12 years. There's really a choice you make whether you want to be there 30 years. I don't think I ever wanted to be kind of ... Andy Ockershausen: It wasn't a lifetime for you. Tom McMillen: ... a lifetime thing. It was more an opportunity to serve and make a difference. I had that experience and it was fantastic. Andy Ockershausen: Great. They were great years. Everything changed during your period in Congress. The whole delegation changed. And Virginia changed and Maryland changed. That's all part of our life has changed. I want to talk to the Tom McMillen I first heard about as a high school athlete. We had a relationship with the University of Maryland for WMAL and Lefty Driesell was one of our contacts. Lefty was trying to recruit a kid in Pennsylvania to come to the University of Maryland. The Road to University of Maryland Basketball and Coach Lefty Driesell Tom McMillen: Well, if you recall the history of that. My brother had played at Maryland- Andy Ockershausen: That's correct. Tom McMillen: -with Gary Williams, Coach Williams. Andy Ockershausen: They were players? Tom McMillen: They were teammates. My brother had played there. My brother was heading into medical school. He wanted me to go to Maryland. My other brother was at Carolina. He wanted me to go to Carolina. My other sister was at University of Pennsylvania. She wanted me to go there. The coach at University of Virginia used to coach in my hometown. He wanted me to go there. Andy Ockershausen: You had a lot of people pulling on you. Tom McMillen: Yeah. It was very difficult. It was compounded because I was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I was the second high school player on the cover of Sports Illustrated in February of my senior year.

The elite coaches, the very best in their field, become synonymous with their programs. Pat Summitt and Tennessee, for example, or Geno Auriemma and UConn. The newest member of the Naismith Hall of Fame, Muffet McGraw and Notre Dame fit the bill. If you look at McGraw's bio on Notre Dame's website, the very top line is a quote from former Notre Dame athletic director Gene Corrigan when McGraw was hired in 1987: ""If we searched for an entire year. I don't think we would find anyone better suited for our program." He could have said 30 years and he would have been right! Over 750+ wins and 30 years later McGraw is still a dynamo; the type of coach that demands excellence on and off the court, and pushes her student-athletes to be strong, diversified and dynamic women. It is a pleasure to salute McGraw on her induction into the Hall of Fame with two of her very best players. Both have had tremendous success on and off the court, and personify the coaching career and achievements with student athletes achieved by McGraw.. First, we chat with San Antonio Stars General Manager Ruth Riley, the Most Outstanding Player when Notre Dame won McGraw's 2001 national championship. Then, after a recent game in Connecticut, we talked with Dallas Wings guard Skylar Diggins, who helped trigger the resurgence of Notre Dame to the Final Four caliber team every season that it is now. Congratulations on induction into Springfield Coach McGraw.  It seems like another perfect fit. Enjoy the podcast!

This weekend the halls of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame will be opened to one of the legends of women's basketball. Rebecca Lobo is a woman whose success off the court as well as on has earned her a spot in the Hall, just down the road from where she grew up in Massachusetts, and about an hour from the University of Connecticut where she introduced women's basketball to so many now rabid Husky fans. There are articles all over talking about Lobo's career as a player, her influence on the women's basketball community and more.  We will let those show that side of Lobo. We will show you a little bit of a different side we hope.   Today we are celebrating Lobo with two people that know her as well as anyone, her ESPN broadcast partners Ryan Ruocco and Holly Rowe. As individuals, Ruocco and Rowe are two of the very best at what they do, covering everything from baseball and softball, football, and men's and women's basketball. It is a pleasure to welcome both back to Dishin & Swishin to talk about the Lobo we see and don't see; the person that greets the fans, tweets about her family and airports, but also the friend and confidant that puts in the work and prep with her colleagues to help make the broadcasts sound so good. Congratulations Rebecca on induction into the Naismith Hall of Fame!  Well deserved, and it is a pleasure to know you, and call you a friend. Enjoy the podcast!

Besides being an American retired Hall of Fame basketball player, Dave Bing has many other major accomplishments. He's run a steel company where he became the top minority supplier to the the auto industry and later was elected Mayor of the City of Detroit.  But after all that, this show discusses the thing he is most proud of  - and the reason why he leaps out of bed in the morning excited about life and the impact he can make in the lives of young men.  BINGO!  This show will give a picture of what the young Dave Bing was all about and what makes him the leader he is today. (This is just part 1) Dave Bing has uniquely claimed success in three distinct arenas; professional sports, business and politics. Dave Bing was elected the 62nd Mayor of the City of Detroit in May 2009. A native of Washington, D.C., Bing is a graduate of Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics, and was later bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Laws in 2006. He was also a standout basketball player in both high school and college.    Dave Bing came to Detroit in 1966 when he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as their #1 pick. Voted one of the top 50 basketball players of all time, Bing was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame in 1984, and into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1990. Bing turned his winning strategies from the basketball court to the boardroom as the founder of an automotive supply corporation, The Bing Group in 1980, where he served as President and Chairman until April 2009.  Within a decade, The Bing Group was recognized as one of the nation’s top Minority-Owned Companies by Black Enterprise.  Answering yet another call to serve, Bing decided to run for Mayor to help rebuild a city that he has loved and been a part of for more than 40 years. Proving that the basics of good performance, integrity and business can be applied to any area or industry, Bing has brought a renewed sense of trust and hope to the City of Detroit.   Bing’s latest challenge is the establishing the Bing Youth Institute whose mission is to create a meaningful mentoring experience to help unleash the unlimited potential in young men of color.   www.BingYouthInstitute.org See show notes at www.DrGenevaSpeaks.com  Follow our hashtag #ignite2impact  Please share this podcast, subscribe in iTunes and leave a review

Chris has two hot takes involving Trevor Simien not being a starting QB after this season, and Tony Romo playing for the Brown next year (27:33). We jump into week 2 picks as Chris tries to sucker me into a stupid bet on a pick-six (35:56), keep disagreeing on Kelvin Benjamin (42:42). If you couldn't tell, we fight... a lot.
